If you’d like a good digital program, use Autodesk Sketchbook. It’s free and a great resource.

I also got a marvelous tablet (non-digital) for under $100 that I love. It’s a Huion Inspiroy H950P that’s being listed on Amazon for $70 right now. You don’t need a glove and the pen doesn’t require charging but it still has great sensitivity. https://www.amazon.com/Inspiroy-Battery-Free-Sensitivity-User-Defined-Shortcuts/dp/B079HHZ63W

The only really big cost is a computer, but most drawing software’s don’t require anything astronomical.

Hope this helps someone!

It’s not fancy but it works well, takes a bit of getting used to though!

I’d say, H320M because it’s a new model, the V1 of Q11K uses a charged pen, right? Which I don’t really recommend in the long run.

But if you’re not keen on the dual-screen chalkboard half of the H320M, I also can recommend these models, you pretty much pick which one based on the design since they’re almost the same specs and can’t go wrong with either.

  • H950P (Very simple design perfect for beginners, and also the cheapest)
  • HS610 (More advanced in design, but still good for beginners)
  • HS611 Grey/Blue/Red (Have three different colors)
  • H1161 (Same size as the Q11K you listed, 11X6″)

If you want wireless, the closest one to your budget right now is the Q620M, which is the one I use right now. You could get it discounted to 90$~80$ during sales if you’re willing to wait.

And hope that helps! I think the H950P would be perfect if you want something for beginners, though since you’re gifting it to a teen, maybe they’ll appreciate the colors of the HS611 or the chalkboard on the H320M, but hey, feel free to research around to what you think fits!

And to answer your questions:

  • a larger work surface? Yes, at least 9×6″ to 11×6″ tablets are more than enough as they’re the more medium-sized ones. Your wrists will appreciate it in the long run, trust me.
  • tilt support for the stylus? Not really, unless the person you’re giving the tablet to uses this technique a lot when drawing traditionally and want to transfer it to digital.
  • less wires to fidget around with? Depends. If their workplace is really cluttered/already have many wires or the person you’re gifting to travel a lot then yes, but not necessarily needed for beginners.
