Gonna echo /u/thats-awesomesauce here with their recommendations.
I have this guy from Huion(no longer sold since it’s an older model) that I use at home and it’s great, the only difference I notice from a Wacom product is the build quality of the pen, it just feels a little on the light side for me personally but otherwise I love it.
I had an iPad Pro and Pencil for a time as well and it was awesome, I did more illustrative style work in Procreate and the drawing experience was just delightful, and I believe they have full Photoshop on iPad now as well.
Bottom line though, Huion has lots of affordable options so if budget is critical I would go with one of their tablets. It may not look as flashy as drawing right on an iPad screen but it will give you the same results in the end.

I’ve had this in my Amazon cart for a while now but haven’t bought it yet so take this with a grain of salt. I’ve read a ton of reviews and watched some on YouTube, it seems like a solid tablet for beginners. I don’t hand draw a lot of stuff but the rare occasion I’d want to it seems like a good enough tablet.

It’s not as bad as all that.
Huion makes a perfectly decent tablet for under $75. It’s not as intuitive as working on a screen tablet like the Cintiq but it’s not as hard as learning to draw all over again.
There’s lots of free software but if you decide to go with Photoshop it’s only $10 a month and you’ll have the latest version of it.

Hasn’t broken or had any major problems yet and it’s an incredible bargain for its size and sensitivity. I’d recommend getting their battery-powered stylus, as I’ve had problems in the past with the rechargeable ones breaking.

It has significantly better specs I’ve seen from most wacoms that arent over 200 dollars, good surface area and from what I understand very much desired LPI and pressure sensitivity. And also a lot of amazon reviews that used wacoms recommend this, what do you think?

Draw tablets easily exceed that price. That being said, I paid $75 for my Huion, which is the spitting image of this one.
I feel like they are inflating the level of sensitivity and that it’s the same model. At this price point, you can expect the draw pad to stop tracking mid-stroke, and for the pressure to scale dramatically as it guesses the appropriate level of pressure.
With drawing tablets, you very much get what you pay for.

Huion 610 pro been using it for almost 2 years now never had a problem. Has charging pen and a pretty good hover distance. Check out the Huion H610. Bamboo tablets are great, but you are paying a bit of a premium just for the brand. I got the Huion for my wife and she’s been very happy with it.

I just got the Huion H160PRO yesterday, and I absolutely love it! I’ve been a Wacom user for years, and had the privilege of using Intuos 5 tablets in high school, but this tablet really met my expectations. It’s about the same size as the Intous line, and it was delivered in 3 days with free shipping through amazon.

I am just starting out. I had an old Genius tablet that I bought a long time ago but never really used. On trying it, I discoved it was broken. So I shopped around and eventually settled on the Huion H610 pro.
I have never had any experience with a Wacom to judge against, but the Huion has been great. I work in Linux, so I had to use a third party driver. Got all 8 side buttons working + 2048 levels of pen pressure. For $72 you get a 2048 levels + 6″ x 10″ working space. Seems like a good deal. I have an Intuos 4 at work and just bought a Huion H610 Pro at home. Can’t tell a huge difference but I don’t use it every day. I’m very happy with my purchase and saved a bundle.

I recently got this and think its great. If you install the drivers for him, its pretty much plug in and go.
Its larger than a medium wacom intuios, performs the same functions and is 1/10th of the price.

I’m no expert, but I just got my first drawing tablet, so I’ll recommend the one I have. I’ve got a Huion h610 Pro. Personally, I like it. Works well with Photoshop Elements 10. The pressure sensitivity works pretty well. It works better with my desktop than laptop, though I think that’s just me installing the driver wrong. It’s normally a $150 tablet, but it’s on sale on amazon right now. I’d check compatible programs before committing, though, to see if it’ll be good enough for you.

Tablet’s are actually pretty affordable if you don’t get a Cintiq or a Wacom. I’ve got this one. I’ve only used it a few times so far but it’s pretty nice. Can’t beat that price for that size either.
Have you considered picking up a second hand monitor? The extra real estate might be handy to have.

After a bit of research I got this one the other day from Amazon, the Huion H610Pro.
Kinda love it, but I’m comparing it against a bamboo I played with years ago when I was like 14.
My bf has a cintiq with a display driver (screen) too that seems neat but I don’t think I need to shell out that much.
I’d say I got off pretty damn well for less than $100.

That’s the one you’re looking for, I think. I’m picking up one for myself closer to Christmas. Wacom did some really shady rebranding last year when I was looking at tablets, and I don’t want to support them if I can help it.

I got the Huion H610PRO it was $77, and so far I love it. Does most stuff a wacom will do except cheaper. It doesn’t have hand touch sensitivity if that’s something you want, but personally I like it more without because I’m one to rest my hand on the paper while drawing. I have the Huion H610 Pro, and I’ve compared it side by side with the WACOM equivelant and it is nearly identical hardware wise. I believe the specs aren’t quite as good, but as a student that is just learning it’s great for the price.

You need more experience. I was the same when I started my indie development “career”; can code in my sleep, but can’t draw for shit.
Keep at it and you’ll get better if you really want to. Also, get a drawing tablet. You can’t “draw” anything other than pixel art with a mouse.
…and unfortunately I’m busy with my own projects at the moment so I can’t help out. Wish you luck though! It’s always refreshing to see that there are other game developers at FIU!

Gimp has a handy I-warp filter feature that can shrink and grow parts of an image. It’s handy for quick morphs.

Hey guys. I’m taking classes for art now, but there’s one holdback: Drawing tablets. What’s odd is I found what appears to be the same model, specs, and everything, one from Monoprice and the other from Huion, and the Monoprice is on sale for $30, and the Huion for $75. Even the molding looks the same, with the same button shapes, dimensions, the only differences I can find are the printed logos, and the Monoprice has a nicer stylus.
What’s the difference between them? Is one better than the other?
I know Monoprice makes solid stuff but it seems kinda janky if it’s half as much as the Huion. And what’s the texture of the drawing surface like? The closer to paper the better, the friction helps me draw better, it’s impossible for me to draw on a glass screen.

As for ‘track pad’ (IDK what that is) but if you meant ‘tablet’ go for Wacom Intuos (formerly Wacom Bamboo), great starter tablets. There’s also Huion if you want something much cheaper than that, and they work just as fine.

I would recommend getting a drawing tablet (no display) unless you’re a super professional and wealthy. The good ones cost around $1000! So, if you’re gonna go the tablet route, the big thing to now is to make sure it’s big. If you go with tablet that has, for example, a 3inch x 4inch drawing zone, it’s going to have to scale so much to show the display on your computer. This means that when you’re drawing, you’ll only be able to move your hand a tiny, tiny bit before it makes a stroke across the whole screen.

I’ve been using it now for 2 and a half years and am so happy with it. It’s as big as my laptop so there isn’t much scaling that has to occur. Plus, its pen is rechargeable and doesn’t run on AAA batteries like a lot of the pen tablets at this price. It has amazing levels of sensitivity and a quick response time. Seriously get it.

I didn’t buy this version but would definitely recommend it as long as it is the same price. Honestly, it’s really not necessary as I never use my tablet when I’m not at home so I don’t need the case. And the glove isn’t necessary because I’m always able to slide my had around the tablet just fine when drawing. But, if it’s free, then get it. Just make sure to read the descriptions on both and make sure you know what you’re getting. When in doubt, just buy the thing in the first link I sent you.

Look into getting a Huion H610, they use UC Logic digitizers, and play nicely with Macs. Ray Frenden is a big fan.
If he/she really gets into it they can look into a Wacom themselves, but it’s not necessary starting out… or arguably at all if they like the Huion.

I like this thread because I’ve been wanting to talk about this for a while. It’s 2014, you no longer need a bedroom sized studio to do digital photography editing. Of course, if you love equipment, you still can.
I edit 90% of my photos on my Lenovo Yoga i7 8 gigs….if I’m not printing things, it starts and ends there.
If I’m printing I use my Dell U2711, and an Intel Nuc rocking an i3 and 8 gigs of ram. yes i3 and 8 gigs.
I work with 24mp files, and suffer no lag in lightroom and/or potoshop on either machine.
I also use a tablet, made in China, because honestly Wacoms are WAY over priced. Huion H610, works perfectly

All my stuff is saved on a Western Digital 1 TB “my cloud”.
I have the big monitor on a rollaway end table, and have no desk per’se.
And that’s about it, in 2014 you can do this stuff from your couch.
