What I am thinking of are standalone units that move a lot more air than what would out of one air duct.

This is what I like to use. It’s simple, and moves a lot of air. Or is very quiet when I want it to be while still moving a decent amount of air. The HEPA filter combined with the carbon filter does an amazing job and keeping dust and odd smells to a minimum.

I don’t know much about air purifiers and room size, so I can’t help you much there, but I use this air purifier, which is good for between 460 and 1000 square feet. It’s pretty cheap too and completely controls the dander from my African and Aussie parrots

Preferably one with a HEPA filter; Honeywell makes some good ones (like the Honeywell HPA 300. The size you get will depend on how big your room is, but the specs should tell you how many square feet the unit will cover

honeywell filtration unit

This got us through the last 2 crazy fire seasons! Just make sure you get it before fire season or they are hard to come by.

I have this Honeywell and love it for dust removal. It also has a cleanable filter. You do need to replace the filter eventually but you can clean it quite a few times before.

Get an air purifier. A big one that sits on the floor and place it in the kitchen.

Edit: Here’s the one I use

I bought this one last year and it works wonders. The large one is $170 but they have smaller ones as well. My sister has a smaller one and it works just as well. (But for a smaller area).

My boyfriend is also allergic to cats, but we decided to try fostering two kittens to see how it goes because like your girlfriend I begged him to see if we could find a solution because I love cats. We’ve had our kittens now for a month and he’s been taking a Zyrtec every morning, we vacuum and dust much more frequently, and most importantly we bought a HEPA filter which has made a huge difference. (Link here if interested – https://www.amazon.com/Honeywell-True-Allergen-Remover-HPA300/dp/B00BWYO53G/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1498754741&sr=8-4-fkmr0&keywords=honeywell+allergen+plus+air+filter+20x25x1 ) It’s a little pricey but it has essentially eliminated any discomfort for him. Before when he was around cats he would get scratchy eyes, wheezy, and tight chest. We live in about a 800 sqft apartment and keep it in the living room and it is super effective. We also never let them in our bedroom so he isn’t sleeping near the dander. If you don’t want to commit to adopting a cat in case your allergies are problematic, I definitely recommend fostering from a local shelter! We’ve really enjoyed it and it’s much less of a commitment in case those solutions don’t work out for you. Best of luck, & hope it works out!

Thanks for your detailed response. Im aware today was green, just getting ready for the coming days/weeks the rest of this winter will produce with heavy smog.

I read up about the CADR ratings and other info like that. I’m thinking about this model

What model do you use? and yea definitely going with one that has a HEPA filter and not the ozone producing ones.

I feel the need to mention hepa filters since no one has brought it up.

The Honeywell 300 is quiet and it should be running in your bedroom all the time. I keep mine on turbo during the day and knock it down to medium at night. It’s much quieter than the old cylindrical version and is probably why I was surprised cedar went defcon 1 today. Good luck to all. I hope we make it through this one.

Thanks. I’m from Chicago, so the weather should start turning better in March and I can go outside again.

I’m using the Honeywell HPA 300

“Really Good” and “Under $300” don’t mix. Really Good are units like the IQ Air Healthpro.
Best for cheap, that is still reasonably effective?

I heard they’re not that good, but there are other air purifiers out there too that are better for example https://www.amazon.com/Honeywell-True-Allergen-Remover-HPA300/dp/B00BWYO53G

This is what I use, it does a good job in my basement for a couple of guys. I think in a 200 sq ft shop it will be even better.

I have this one in the US, at my mothers house. Its perfect. Room size is ~200 sq. ft. This one is noisy on full blast, but the fine carbon pre-filter does great with smells. I can sleep with it on lowest fan setting and it produces good white noise. There is a large surface area for the filters. Con: plastic build quality.

https://www.amazon.com/Honeywell-True-Allergen-Remover-HPA300/dp/B00BWYO53G/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=honeywell+air+purifier+400&qid=1609415621&sr=8-3

I have this one in Austria. Its better. Its round which may have an engineering advantage, but I have no idea. CADR of 400 m3/hr. Allegedly it is good for 95m2. My bedroom is ~30m2 with very high ceilings, and its perfect. Freshens the room in 15-30mins on full blast. Nice white noise on lowest setting. Well made. Essential during pollen season. Not as fast at eliminating odors as the honeywell. The carbon filter is well built; a honeycomb frame filled with carbon pellets, so possibly lower surface area. I occasionally move it to the livingroom and run it full blast overnight to remove cooking smells from the nearby kitchen, or from dinner parties. I wake up to a fresh livingroom. I vacuum the pre-filter once a month. Cons: cost, and the filter surface area is not that big for the cost. However, my apartment does not get very dusty, and it handles my allergies/pollen just fine.

So, I posted based on other similar threads. This is the same model as mine, given the pics and price:

https://www.reddit.com/r/appliancerepair/comments/k9gca8/a_button_stopped_working_on_my_air_filter_the/

And similar device:

https://www.reddit.com/r/appliancerepair/comments/iu0ac3/help_honeywell_hfd123_quiet_clean_electronic_air/

It’s not HVAC, they’re stand alone consumer units:

Is there a better place to post home appliance repair requests?

Amazon link to the one we bought,
I run it on allergen mode sometimes but usually just the second highest speed is good enough. Clean the filter regularly if you have pets.

For my main area (apartment living room/dining room/kitchen), I bought this Honeywell HPA300 . Keep and eye out for price drops on this as it will go back on sale eventually.

And I also have a Germ Guardian AC4825 for a small bedroom where the litter boxes are. This is an older model that goes out of stock periodically.

I haven’t had issues with either of them, I try to clean the charcoal filters out every 3-4 weeks, and also clean the apartment regularly with sweeping and vacuuming. The HPA300 is rated for my main area square footage, but because it’s so open and there’s a hallway, I think there would be even more of an impact with a second one, but it does a really good job considering. Don’t buy into the bad review bots talking about burning plastic smells etc. Dumb Dumbs don’t know how to remove plastic from the hepa filters before turning it on. There is a sort of warehouse-y type smell for the first day of running, but it goes away.

I use HPA300 and 200 models for each room depending on room size. It clears the smoke and pm2.5. Keeps AQI below 20. Definitely get them. Caveat: my house is 950sqtft and we have 5 air purifiers running.

HPA300 https://www.amazon.com/Honeywell-True-Allergen-Remover-HPA300/dp/B00BWYO53G/

Hand held air monitor https://www.amazon.com/Temtop-LKC-1000E-Professional-Formaldehyde-Particles/dp/B073VHHNGT

You can watch the air quality improve rapidly, and also compare it to outdoors.

Replace filters every fire season.

Something like this might be able to help you out. A little pricey, but I can’t imagine a private test being any cheaper.

I also love my air purifier and after using it daily for going on five years now, couldn’t imagine not having it around. Definitely worth it as an investment in your health.

Find someone who uses the Rotobrush or similar equipment on the air ducts, there is huge difference between that and just the typical “super” vacuum trucks. http://imgur.com/a/ebR1Z

These are great air purifiers: http://www.amazon.com/Honeywell-True-Allergen-Remover-HPA300/dp/B00BWYO53G/

Also change the HVAC filter, buy the good ones, change it before and after the duct cleaning.

We also installed this, it works really well and was super simple to install.. (Bought from AirstarSupply, they support the warranty and its not a knock-off) http://www.amazon.com/REME-RGF-Air-Purification-System/dp/B00WSUK12M

Change the filters in your vacuum cleaner. If you have the funds I highly suggest a Neato (not a Roomba, do your research) that will run every day.
