My husband is allergic to dogs and has asthma as well. We have a non-shedding dog to cut down on his allergies, but her dander still bothers his asthma and her saliva causes him to break out in hives. None of these are perfect, but used together they do cut back on his allergies:

  • We have a standing air filter and it helps. It is this one from Honeywell: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00BWYO3X8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_uzGFFbTFEPS4A (it is pretty loud when on the higher settings necessary for allergen relief, so it will take getting used to)

  • Daily allergy meds for husband. He cycles through different ones every few months. He also uses an inhaler when necessary.

  • Brush the dog daily outside to remove loose hairs. I would be wary of bathing too frequently, as it may damage the hair and cause more to come loose even if it gets rid of collected dander. That might be something to discuss with a groomer.

  • Feed dog olive oil over food once a day to help her coat stay healthy.

  • Strong vacuum with a rotating brush to thoroughly clean hair and dander from furniture and floors.

  • Don’t let dog on furniture.

  • Laundry often. Keep the lint collectors in both washer and dryer clean.

  • Keep dog out of bedroom. Door closed.

If it still really affects your asthma after all of those measures are taken, there is not much more you can do other than finding another living situation.
