Well, in terms of shelter, I’ve already said real estate is a special case.

The televisions of the 1950s ranged in price from $129 to $1,295.. That’s practically the price range today WITHOUT taking inflation into account, and the technology you’d get for that money is worlds better. This one, for instance, is full color with a built-in dvd player.

Radios aren’t expensive. That’s two hours of work at minimum wage.

Food isn’t that expensive if you make everything from scratch, as most people did in the 50s.

You get the point. Just about everything on that list is cheaper, and better too. It’s as much a factor of our tastes having grown with our productivity as anything.
