Planning to build first board, gk64. What switches should I get for this first board? I don’t want something too expensive but not something too cheap. I’ve only had experience with Outemu browns and I like that certain feeling.

Ok I’ll link the one that I found thank you for helping me! https://www.amazon.ca/GK64S-Plastic-Aluminum-Keyboard-Bluetooth/dp/B07XBR9RPT/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=gk64&qid=1609388888&sr=8-1 I think this is a standard keyboard, only problem is I now have to find some cheap key caps because this keyboard doesn’t come with any…

The GK64 is hotswap and has options for a split spacebar if you get the base kit

but its a 60%. That’s the closest that I know of though.

(Sorry, this is my second question here today but I need help again!)

I’m looking into getting a GK64 after having read some good things about them on this subreddit. I would like to use Kailh Box Reds in it and the description says it supports Kailh switches (at least I think it does – it uses broken English).

So does this mean any non-optical, 3 or 5 pin switch would work on the board? And just to be clear so I don’t buy the wrong thing, this will support Kailh Box switches?

Thanks for all the help and for being an awesome community! Everyone has been really nice and helpful so far.

Here is a 65% Geek GK64x on amazon. Make sure to order and have it fulfilled by Amazon to get fast shipping. It supports 3 and 5 pin switches. It’s not purple but I’m sure you could paint it for pretty cheap. It also comes with rgb presoldered onto the board. If you want the RGB to shine through nicely you’ll need to get switches with clear/transparent tops.

I would also recommend getting some sorbothane, a sound dampening material off of amazon as well. You can cut it up with a sharp box cutter and fit a layer onto the bottom of the case since the case is very hollow, should get rid of a lot of the hollow pingy noise.

Additionally, if you are using linear switches and you’d like to lube them, I recommend either Krytox 205g0, Tribosys 3204, or if you’re experimental/want to save money like me, a mix of Superlube grease and oil, specifically 21030 for the grease and 51010 for the oil. I used a 3/4 grease 1/4 oil mix.

Hope that helps 🙂

So I just received my new keyboard the GK64(XS) DIY kit from Amazon without the bluetooth capability https://www.amazon.com/GK64S-Plastic-Aluminum-Keyboard-Bluetooth/dp/B07XBR9RPT/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=gk64&qid=1611283942&sr=8-2 and my question is that I want to change the crappy plastic case that it came with to this https://kbdfans.com/collections/60-layout-case/products/customized-gh60-aluminum-case?variant=34410535059595

I went on other forums and read other peoples comments on the matter and according to them the PCB will fit just fine but the plate is the issue on most cases. I was wondering if that is still the problem with theses cases and if so where I could go to purchase a different plate (preferably brass) or if I can just buy it and everything will fit.

I am a complete novice to the mechanical keyboard world but I am really interested in learning all there is about them.

Yh I don’t like the numpad I have at the moment on my full size so was looking tkl or 60% so would only want the arrow keys which the gk64 has and volume controls which I could buy separate I will probably go for:
*Gk64 case,pcb and plate
*these keys
*or these
*or these
*I can’t find the Etsy listing for the macro pad as Etsy is down and the shop is taking a break but a bit like this

Or the kemove snowfox with the volume thing and arrow keys

🙂

There is a lot of confusion caused by dishonest sellers (inc. Amazon).

There are different variants of this keyboard, only buy one clearly advertised as hot-swap and either go for bare bone (without switches or keycaps) or one clearly advertised as compatible with Cherry MX. Anything with “optical switches” is ONLY compatible with Gateron optical switches (no silent variant of those found) and it is properly called SK64, but dogy sellers list them as GK64 optical. Obviously real GK64 is more expensive.

Personally I would rather go for Varmilo Miya 68 with more comfortable layout and huge choice of switches (including MX Silent Red), but do not listen to me…. because I am selling one myself with Zilents 😉
