Hey guys! I’m looking for a good desktop speaker setup!
Preferably around/under $100, I don’t want anything super fancy. As of right now, I have a solid headphone collection (M50x, HD8 DJ, and HyperX Clouds for gaming). With that, I have a Fiio Olympus 2 DAC, which I presume would power my speakers as well as headphones when they’re plugged in.
Now I will be mounting these to shelves above me (the speakers will be around 55 inches from my head, pointed at a slight 20 degree angle down).
Here are my few requests:
The speakers can’t be too big. Since these will be mounted to shelves above me, they have should have a clearance height of around 9 inches. Additionally, if they’re too fat, they’ll be obtrusive and won’t fit well with my setup.
I would prefer to get a speaker+sub combo, with the sub under my desk. A sub isn’t necessary at the moment, I can buy one down the line.
Although my price is around a 100 bucks and I am flexible, I’d only want to pay more if there’s that much of a difference. Else, I’d prefer something cheaper.
This one is minor, but I’d prefer wooden/brown speakers, as they’d look better with my shelves.
Here is the best thing I could find, but I’m naive in the speaker world (more of a headphone junkie myself)
Can anyone attest to how good these would be, at least from 55 inches (~4 1/2 feet, 1.2 meters) away? If so, any sub suggestions?
Finally, I have a DAC but I’m wondering if there’s anything I need to know about hooking speakers up to a DAC? If so, let me know! Thanks!

I got them because they match the Fluance XL set I have down there, but I can not recommended them… They sound a bit weak with no sub. I use my Hyper X headphones most of the time.

I did a quick search, these ones looked interesting to me.

I’m guessing you have the Logitech S120 or S150s. Normally, I’d recommend Logitech – I have a few sets that I’ve used; but currently use the Z-5500s (THX certified).
- Ultra-cheap route These are some pretty decent Cyber acoustic speakers. Not grand, but they’ll use a USB port for power (no additional power plug) and throw out some decent sound. Gave ’em to my buddy’s girlfriend and she used ’em for shower music for a few years before the damp got to ’em. $12.54 @ Newegg.
- Genius 3-way 2.0 speakers. An off-brand (not well-known in the US) – but I’ve purchased two pairs of these and was pleasantly surprised. Their reproduction is both clean and fairly loud. Gave one set to a coworker, she loves them. They’re also fairly compact. They require an additional power plug (like most speakers). $49.99 @ Amazon.
- Creative Inspire T10 Creative Labs has been in the sound business for a while; and they’re proud of it. This base-level set is twice what the Logitechs cost you, but Creative is usually reliable. $34.99 @ Amazon.
Now, if you’re wanting to bypass the on-board audio altogether, you can get a set of USB-based speakers, also. Logitech, JBL and a few other companies manufacture those. Know that if you go THAT route – switching to headphones is a bit more problematic.
