if you have the high impedance dt-990s you’ll need a DAC/amp to get the signal loud enough to hear.
here’s a cheap dac/amp combo. This takes over as your audio device on your PC, you plug your speakers into this too
·
As far as using the optical out, just run it to a DAC/AMP combo.
This is a cheap one that I can vouch for, though you will get better quality the higher up you go in budget

Meze 99 have very low impedance. So almost any amp/dac would work well. If you want to save a buck, DAC-X6 are completely adequate enough to drive them. If you’re taking these around with you, there are more portable options from FiiO and ifi.
·
I had the fiio e10k for 3-4 years before it died. It worked really well, but I found out after getting my new dac that it wasn’t actually powerful enough for my low-professional grade cans (akg k712pro) so I was missing a few quieter portions of audio.
All of fiios products are pretty well respected, but it may be out of the price range.
The FX AUDIO DAC-X6 seems like a good option at about 60 usd on Amazon.
There are plenty of options out there.
imo the best way to find a product you want search something like “best dac/amp under X dollars” use search tool to filter results within a year then go through old audio forum posts and read what knowledgeable people have to say.

I don’t have personal experience with that one.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07TW2JQNN/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glc_fabc_EKXVF05KET1ZNVFPEWHD
I have something similar to this and has been working well for about 2 years now.
But that sound blaster looks pretty good for bang for the buck.

That should work. USB input for your MacBook Air, Optical input for your PC, rear RCA outs for your monitors, headphone output for your headphones.
This isn’t called an interface BTW. Interfaces are for recording audio with a computer. This is a combination DAC and headphone amp.

Can I power the HD600’s or Sundaras off of a $60 dac?
Here’s what I have to go with my HD600:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07TW2JQNN/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_ZK1EMM66445TG5N7Q16T
I find this gets them loud enough & I’m not willing to spend $400 for a amp that’s just snake oil or diminishing return at that point.
Smsl with thx 888 in it seems interesting. Or the more expensive thx aaa 789 but that’s way to much.
·
Honestly this is one of the reasons I went with an external DAC/AMP with an easily accessible on/off switch as well as speakers also with an on/off switch. I just have my signal split between the two and turn on whichever I need. My setup is more expensive than this card, but there are quality units like the FX-Audio DAC-X6 that are in this price range and very well regarded.
There are definitely lots of upsides to this soundcard though, especially if your onboard audio isn’t high quality, or if you want to keep your desk space clean.
·
They should work, but will probably sound terrible due to being under powered.
They are very good headphones, but as I said, to do them justice, get a dac/amp. Even a cheaper one.
Heres the first one I ever got: https://www.amazon.com/FX-Audio-Digital-Decoder-Headphone-Amplifier/dp/B07TW2JQNN/ref=zg_bs_13880161_12?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=5CMGBQYEXEHNERJFKV5F

While I have a better set up at home, I used this at my office.

Honestly? So long as you can control some EQ, even just a basic 5-band, check out the Sennheiser HD280 Pros. I’ve been using mine for… Shit, at least the last 10 years. They’re fantastic cans for the price (~$100 for the “updated model” on Amazon in the US). Solid response curve, doesn’t need an amp to power them (though they do not mind being run through an amp at all), decently well-built, comfortable. Typically recommended among the sub-$150 headphones.
And with the money you’re saving, you could pick up an inexpensive amp. I’ve had this DAC/amp for a few years now, and it’s been very good to me, for $60. Sounds fantastic with those cans, and Peace EQ on my Windows machine.
Edit: I mention the EQ because, while these headphones can pump out some serious bass, it has to be fed to them. They have a pretty flat frequency response curve to them, so they’re fairly neutral, no real emphasis on any particular part of the spectrum. But if you feed them plenty o’ bass from whatever your audio source is, you’ll go deaf before you start clipping their lower limits.
·
So i dont really know that much about amps, so would this amp work out for a pair of Beyerdynamic Dt 990’s?
·
I bought this amp for my 80 ohm 770s. I didn’t have a huge budget to dip my toes in to this hobby, so the 770s (from the Amazon warehouse) and this one for $58 bucks kept my right around $200.
I don’t know that I 100% needed it, but I like it better than straight from the PC.
PC and 1/2 and this at 1/2 is perfect. Having the volume knob on the front allows for easy one handed volume changes for fine tuning.
It also keeps the full cord length available vs having is go all the way down to the back of my desktop.
·
get an mini amplifier like this https://www.amazon.com/FX-Audio-Digital-Decoder-Headphone-Amplifier/dp/B07TW2JQNN/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=headphone+amp&qid=1603993392&sr=8-5
it’s a bit pricey but it’s the only way you’ll be able to change the volume and it’ll sound great
edit: i realized that you could just use the rca to aux thing for your tv’s audio out. depending how close you want to be to the tv i guess that’s an option too.
·
Id either get the custom studios or the 32 ohm version. The custom studios are a strictly superior version of the dt770 in almost every metric. And the 32 ohm version can get by with slightly less power than the higher ohm versions. Either way. this should be more than plenty. For the 32ohms you could probably even get away with a good dongle dac
·
I’m looking at getting this FX-Audio DAC/amp to use with my PC, Nintendo Switch, and PS4/PS5.
I understand that I can have sound from my PC going through USB and the PS4/PS5 through optical, but can I connect the Switch to the coaxial input through a 3.5mm to coaxial cable?
Alternatively, I sometimes like to have sound coming from my Switch and PC at the same time. Currently I do this by connecting the Switch to my motherboard’s line in jack, and enabling playback through the motherboard’s audio console. If I hook the PC up to the DAC through USB, would I still be able to hear that line in audio?
·
Thanks for the reply!
I’m pretty unfamiliar with DACs and how they work. For the DAC/AMP option, would I connect the DAC to my speakers using RCA Cables? Then I can just plug my headphones into the DAC when I want to use them for my computer?
Something like this would work?
·
Who knows? It depends both on the motherboard, and your particular PC build as to whether or not you would benefit from a DAC/headphone amp. The best thing to do is try them and see how they sound. If they barely get loud enough for you, then you need a headphone amp.
you decide you want a headphone amp/DAC, here’s an inexpensive one that will drive the headphones very loud https://www.amazon.com/FX-Audio-Digital-Decoder-Headphone-Amplifier/dp/B07TW2JQNN/ref=asc_df_B07TW2JQNN/

It is debatable whether the 58X actually needs an amp to shine. And outside of the rich-guys audiophile world, you only really need an external DAC if your current source isn’t clean (i.e. plagued by noise and interference). Coincidentally I’m researching a similar purchase, so here is my summary:
- You can’t go wrong with the “Schiit stack” i.e. Magni and Modi. Each will set you back $99. To stay within budget you could start with the amp (Magni) and later add the DAC (Modi). If needed.
- The JDS Atom is a killer amp for $99. Its measurements are off the charts, easily bettering the Schiit Magni. The question is whether you will hear an audible improvement over the Magni… But yeah, it should provide more than enough power to drive the 58X (and future headphones). The downside is that the device is housed in a cheap-looking and feeling plastic chassis. Some folks replace the volume knob with something more substantial, if that matters to you.
- You could pair the Atom with JDS’ OL DAC or the Topping D30.
- Alternatively you could opt for a combined amp/DAC. Something like the FX-Audio DAC-X6 ($85) should be more than sufficient (see measurements).

They certainly have better bass/sub-bass extension, compared to other open-backs. I liked mine, before I gave it to a friend. Was able to be driven with a DAC-X6

32 to about 100 ohm tends to run fine enough out desktops. But if it’s still too quiet for you, you won’t need too powerful of an amp. Might as well get a dac/amp combined, so that all the audio processing can be done externally without distortion or cross-talk.

The FX-Audio DAC-X6 is a good starter amp-dac.$64. Hard to beat these for the price, you’ll probably need a 3.5mm to 1/4″ adapter.

The FX Audio DAC-X6 is what I paired the SHP9500 when I first started my audio hobby.
Great starter DAC AMP for $65.Mine has lasted 3 years. It is now hooked up to my TV.
While I really like the SHP9500 two other inexpensive headphones to consider if you enjoy more bass
are : Koss KPH30i $30
And HiFiman HE-35X on Drop $75
·
OK, that’s good news.
FX-Audio DAC-X6 ($59) seems to tick all the boxes. You can plug it into the wall next to your listening position, connect it to your TV with a 15 ft toslink cable ($9) that can be tucked into a corner or in a cable channel. No delay, flexibility, just like mine but less expensive.
Add on your favorite wired headphones, you’re within budget and on task! This isn’t the best stuff out there, but it works and the convenience of having a latency-free headphone feed that you can afford is totally worth concessions in the performance department.

Some AliExpress audio equipment is good. Some is crap.

I’d just get it off Amazon for the free return option and fast shipping: https://www.amazon.com/FX-Audio-Digital-Decoder-Headphone-Amplifier/dp/B07TW2JQNN/

You can also get a usb dac and connect the RCA outputs to your receiver. Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07TW2JQNN/
