The FIIO K5 Pro would be an awesome choice for a DAC/AMP combo. It has 2 of the very nice AKM 4493 DAC chips in it as well. This unit is about the best you can get for 200 or less. It has a neutral sound signature, which will pair perfectly with the K712 Pro.

Just buy a FiiO K5 Pro DAC/AMP combo. You can get it for about 150 US. This will get you where you want to be. I assume you are currently using the onboard audio trash on your motherboard.

Generally speaking, a separate headphone amplifier and USB DAC, those are often combined.

A very good entry level-ish (at around 150 bucks) would be the FiiO K5 Pro.

https://www.amazon.com/FiiO-K5-AK4493EQ-Amplifier-Headphone/dp/B07WT7TYWY

It’s basically an external sound card, with an amplifier built in to specifically drive headphones well. It connects via a normal USB connection.

There are obviously many others like it, but I’m personally of the opinion that you can’t do better than the K5 Pro at that price level.

ZeosPantera (whether he is loved or hated here) did some quick tests (because i begged him lul) and he said it’s really close to Atom. The DAC is technically very similiar to Khadas Tone V1, it has the same USB interface and DAC chipset of comparable tier.

Btw, you can already order it on amazon US for price that puts Atom+Khadas to shame.

Oh yeah definitely doable. Get this; you’ll thank me later. Occasionally, they get listed for $100-120 used but in good condition in r/AVexchange or eBay too.

Thank you all for the replies. After doing a little more research I found this: https://www.amazon.com/FiiO-K5-AK4493EQ-Amplifier-Headphone/dp/B07WT7TYWY/ref=sr_1_11?dchild=1&keywords=Fiio+A5+Portable+Headphone+Amp&qid=1622090494&sr=8-11

I think this may be perfect for what I’m looking for. I see that this has a line-in option. Does this mean that I can plug my GSX 1000 into this with a 3.5mm to RCA and use the Fiio as an amp for the GSX?

If you want that low end rumble of the sub-bass that you only really get from planars. Paired with some DAC/AMP like the FiiO K5 Pro maybe. The Aeon Open X are often on sale for -$100 less, like right now its at $400. Although I’ve heard its more dark, than it is bright.

There’s not a lot of open-backs that have the same sound signature as the DT 770. You could check out the Audeze LCD’s (above budget) and Hifiman HE4XX (within budget). Overall, it’ll be a big difference as you will lose some bass coming from closed back, in exchange for that wider soundstage.

Maybe hold your wallet for Black Friday/Cyber Monday in a week?

I’d like to be able to hear my PC and PS5 audio at the same time using my FiiO K5 Pro amp. To get PS5 audio into my headphones I have PS5 HDMI>TV>TV Optical out to Amp. I can use USB to amp to get PC audio, but I can’t listen to both sources at the same time.

Is there some kind of hub that mixes audio, that I could hook the optical from the TV and USB or 3.5mm from the PC to, and has a USB/Optical/RCA output that would go to the amp?

My amp: https://www.amazon.com/FiiO-K5-AK4493EQ-Amplifier-Headphone/dp/B07WT7TYWY

Could I use a USB to Optical converter like this: https://www.amazon.com/Signstek-Coaxial-Converter-Convert-Analogue/dp/B00FEDHHKE and go PC USB> USB to Optical converter> Optical hub or splitter with TV optical connected also> Amp?

If you are looking to spend around $300 The HD6XX from Drop ($220 USD) get basically near-universal praise at that price point for open backs and most people agree they sound better through an amp like the Schiit Magni or something like the dac/amp Fiio K5.

For closed backs, I own and like the DT 770 Pro ($160 USD) and they don’t generally need an amp. The only issue with them (and the HD 6XX) is they aren’t super portable. The DT 770 has a super long non-detachable cable.

For travel, Id recommend getting a nicer pair of IEM’s. The $50-$100 dollar range is full of nice offerings like the Tin Audio T2 ($50 USD) or the Moondrop Arias ($90 USD) and they don’t need an amp.

I found what seems to be an acceptable 2 in 1 to make it simpler, is this good? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07WT7TYWY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_9YSGS3S1FGFN6YN6G516

>150 ohm

I’m pretty sure they’re 250 ohms, and there are other reasons that make headphones harder to drive. The dt990 (I assume Pro variant) is hard to drive, but don’t worry about it too much, it isn’t that big of a deal.

Dirty explanation

Dac: turns 1s and 0s into the analog audio signal

Amp: makes it loud enough to hear

Hear’s a good amp/dac for the dt990 pro: https://www.amazon.com/FiiO-K5-AK4493EQ-Amplifier-Headphone/dp/B07WT7TYWY/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=k5+pro&qid=1615789269&sr=8-1

It’s right at the edge of diminishing returns and should have more than enough power for any headphones you get in the future.

Some headphones require more power to run (mainly for usable volume.) The amp on motherboards usually isn’t that powerful. Since you’re new to this I recommend an amp/dac combo. Dirty explanation, the dac takes the 1s and 0s and turns it into sound, and the amp gives the juice to the headphone or speaker. A dac/amp combo puts it all into one box instead of two.

Here are great affordable beginner headphone amp/dacs:

I use this with my X3’s and it sounds great with lots of power – https://www.fiio.com/k5pro

https://www.amazon.co.uk/K5-PRO-Desktop-Headphone-Amplifier/dp/B07WT7TYWY

Have a think about how portable you would like a dac/amp to be because this is a small desktop unit, and requires mains power.

I may sell my K5 Pro at some point and go for one of these for portability – https://www.amazon.co.uk/Chord-Mojo-DAC-Amplifier-Headphone/dp/B0171LBE78

These are also well reviewed – https://www.amazon.co.uk/iFi-hip-dac-Headphone-Amplifier-Unbalanced/dp/B0842W67F1/ref=psdc_1591692031_t2_B0171LBE78

Look for the Fiio K5 Pro. It’s a very good unit that will easily drive the K712

I have the Beyerdynamic 990 Pros @ 250ohm and am using the FiiO K5Pro DAC & AMP combo. I’m not an audiophile and new to the scene as well, but it’s an affordable solution to get started and figure out what and where I really want to invest into for the future. For $150 it’s really hard to beat unless you start getting into the $500 range.

Amazon: FiiO K5Pro DAC & AMP

You can purchase the DAC and AMP separately, which from u/Watercooledsocks recommendation, a JDS Labs Atom Stack would be a great starter choice as well.
