People who are into coffee often buy more expensive kettles so they can control the temperature of the water. They also like the type with the long spout as they’re better for pouring, like this.

I’ve got quite into proper coffee but I haven’t felt the need to get one just yet.

Very cool! I also ordered this to help with precision:

Fellow Stagg EKG, Electric Pour-over Kettle For Coffee And Tea, Matte Black, Variable Temperature Control, 1200 Watt Quick Heating, Built-in Brew Stopwatch https://www.amazon.com/dp/B077JBQZPX/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_SSC.FbQQD74HT?psc=1

Now what about the auto timer? I’ve heard that it stops whenever you pause, for example two stir the grounds or allow it to bloom. What has your experience been with that particular function?

Stainless steel looks good and utilitarian imo; however I have seen some matte black kitchenware that looks classy as heck. Case in point: Fellow Stagg EKG.

So for matcha, you don’t use a teapot – it’s a powder, so you need a bowl called a chawan. You do need a good kettle for heating up water to a precise temperature. I have the Bonavita one but I think it’s been discontinued, but this one is very popular among tea people. For chawans, you can look at a variety of places – Kettl and Thés du Japon come to mind, but it’s really up to you, they’re all very unique! You also need a good whisk, called a chasen. This is a bamboo whisk made especially for matcha, and you can usually get these at the same place you might get a chawan. Kettl might restock theirs sometime, and I think Hugo Tea will have some nice ones in sometime in the next few months. A little sieve is essential for sifting the powder, otherwise you’ll get lumps which are bitter. Some people use a sifter tin like this, but I prefer ones which go right into the chawan, like this. Then you need matcha of course- avoid Amazon!!!!!! Try Kettl or Ippodo first. They both have “beginner” matcha offerings which are less expensive than the super high quality stuff which will be very complex, but still extremely good for starting off.

If this fits your budget (including kettle, all instruments, and some tea, this could range from $140 USD to god knows how high: chawans can get expensive), start there! If that’s too much, use a bowl you already have and focus on the kettle and the tea instruments and tea. You really can’t make matcha without a proper whisk and sifter, trust me I’ve tried. If you have a larger budget, maybe get a gaiwan for your oolong interest! These are easy to find, this one is really cute but you can get a cheaper one like this or anything else from Yunnan Sourcing. If you’re working in a budget, spend less on teaware and more on tea at first. I don’t know what kind of oolongs you like, if you like Taiwanese oolongs, try Floating Leaves. If you like dancong, try White2Tea or One River Tea. There are maaaaany other types, explore the Oolong tab on White2Tea to get an idea of the extent. Enjoy!

I personally use a Fellow Stagg EKG Electric Gooseneck Kettle. It’s a bit pricey. I got it for coffee making mainly, but I use it for my tea as well.

This one doesn’t make a noise and you can set it to a temperature just below boiling. It’s not as great as everyone says it is. There’s a little steel band on the handle that gets boiling lava hot every time you use it. The lid also shoot out really hot steam.

This one is good but has fewer features. It shuts off when it boils and as I recall, it doesn’t make any noise or at least very little.
