Starting this off with a disclaimer I don’t have an EDS diagnosis but a doctor suspects it. However, the chair thing… I totally relate. This information applies to sitting at a desk all day for work.

I worked in an office that had ergonomic consultations and bought whatever equipment we needed. For the first time in my life, I could actually sit correctly in a chair and be comfortable. It actually got rid of a lot of my upper back pain as well.

I work from home now and had to buy everything myself. One thing for me is I absolutely can’t sit in a chair if the seat slopes forward. I need a chair where that angle is adjustable, non-negotiable. I found that a chair that has an adjustable seat angle, adjustable height, adjustable arm rest height, and adjustable backrest angle is most helpful. Additionally, having a foot rest helped me so much. I still sit cross legged in my chair sometimes, but I feel comfortable with my feet on a foot rest.

The icing on the cake was finally investing in a sit/stand desk. I bought mine from Autonomous, but there are plenty or companies out there. I can sit in my chair, stand up, or have my recumbent bicycle under my desk and gently cycle while I work. Last thing is make sure your monitors are at eye height and you aren’t looking down at them all day. Prop them up on books, a shelf, or get monitor stands.

I know every body is different, but learning about ergonomics really helped me to not have pain when I sit. I think a lot of people can get away with sitting in uncomfortable chairs and be fine, but not me.

Here are some links to the products I have. I bought these over the last four years, so it has stretched out the cost of everything over time.

Office chair: my exact chair isn’t available, but I look for chairs with multiple adjustment levers versus just one for height. My chair was about $150, so I was able to get a good chair without springing for an expensive “ergonomic” chair

The ultrawide in the middle is a MSI MPG341CQR and to the left is a DELL S2716DGR. The footrest helps me stretch my legs and calfs when I’m in long work sessions and I forget to standup and take a break to walk around.
