Rear porting is an issue with any speakers placed in close proximity to the wall. While it isn’t solved by moving to a sealed speaker or front ported one, some of the problems are reduced by doing so.

My suggestion, if it HAS to sit in a bookshelf, is the Elac Debut 2.0 B6.2. Make sure you scoot it as far forward on the shelf as is practical/possible to reduce reflection issues.

Also, your shelves will have to be rather tall, haha – but such is life.

ELAC B6 are good but not a steal for $150. $125 is a good price for them new in box. $50 would be a steal.

The newer version ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2 currently $259 were on sale for $149 during the 2019 holidays.

I’m not a fan of vintage speakers like that. If going vintage to mid to high end like some Klipsch Heresy. If you want big bass get a pair of better modern speakers and a big 15″ subwoofer or two. The powered subwoofer and separate speakers gives you better control of the sound.

I’ll second the recommendation on the Sony STR-DH190 receiver. I have one. It’s very good and can be fully controlled from the remote. I’ve also been very happy with my Elac Debut 2.0 B6.2’s. Very good bookshelf speakers that will fill the room if you need them to. Together they come to about $420 before sales tax. If you know how to evaluate speakers you can find very good deals on vintage stuff, but if you need the bookshelf size I think the modern stuff will have the best performance.

Two questions. Can the A1’s mount directly on top of the t-zero+‘s as upfiring speakers? Also, in regards to the E2+, I’m not sure I want to wall mount the surround speakers and would probably prefer bookshelf speakers instead. Should I go with the B1+’s? They do seem to be unavailable so do you have any recommendations for good bookshelf speakers to use as surround sound speakers? I found these on Amazon and they seem to be nice:

I bought the ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2 and they work great! Love the sound and have a good amount of bass that I won’t be needing a subwoofer.

These are connected to a vintage Kenwood receiver that I got out of craigslist for $50. While vintage receivers from the 70s and 80s can be expensive, newer receivers should do the job too!

Just make sure your receiver can power your speakers of choice

I’m thinking more like this, I’m not sure if studio monitors would be best for a home theater? I feel like it would already be lacking with just bookshelf speakers and no sub but I live in a townhouse so just doing what I can to stay friendly with neighbors

ELAC Debur 2.0 in the 6.2 size are a super solid choice. Theyre fantastic bedroom setup but definitely able to do living room parties, esp if you plan on adding a sub. Big towers typically don’t sound good in small rooms, so if that’s the majority of listening, I’d size the speakers to the bedroom. Amazon gave me 90 day trial on them too, so I really put them through the paces. Theyre pretty affordable but sound much much better than their price point would lead you to believe

Elac B6.2 are a good bass forward speaker but you’re always best to add a subwoofer at some point of you can. They are $250 new on Amazon and $220 open box. I paid like $320 for my debut B6 (the predecessor to the B6.2) and I still feel like I got a good deal with how good they sound and the B6.2 is supposed to be even better (and front ported so can be placed closer to the wall if necessary) so I think it would be a really good choice.

Also, for a bit more money, these speakers are quite a bit better than the ones you linked to: https://www.amazon.com/ELAC-Debut-Bookshelf-Speakers-Black/dp/B07B4Q5587. They’re currently on sale as well. They are a bit bigger, and if size is a problem, there is a smaller 5.2 version.

>Please, I’m begging you, somebody tell me what to buy. I just can’t decide.

Wow…

> I’m not against buying and returning from Amazon to try out a few different options.

So… do that? Problem solved. Choose your top favorites six options, write their names down and number them. Roll a dice if you’re that indecisive. You just look ridiculous coming here and begging for someone, anyone to tell you what to do.

You don’t know who that person is or if they know what they’re talking about – they’re just strangers on the internet. You’re likely to get several responses to your inquiry – what do you do then?

Your approach is unnecessarily needy. But fine… here, buy these.

I haven’t heard those but they are supposed to be excellent little speakers. Klipsch usually has a pretty good Black Friday/Cyber Monday sale. I’ve seen some really good reviews on the Elac also, but they are not powered.

Consider these if the kefs end up being more than $300.

Wharfedale, KEF, Elac, Jamo and the RP series from klipsch should all have strong bookshelf speakers that are on amazon

I’d recommend at least looking at the Elac Debut 2.0 B6.2s. They’re on sale right now. I got them for $150 Black Friday a year and a half ago but haven’t seen them that cheap since. The UniB5s are on sale also because their 2.0 models are out now and pretty spectacular for $300. They’re rear ported, so keep that in mind if you’ll be putting them against the wall. As for an amp, have you considered the small amps, like the SMSL Ad18? For the same price though, you can get the Yamaha or Sony 2 channel receivers.

I second the RB42’s. But if you can add a sub, (Dayton’s line is cheap and great, I just got a Sub – 1200 for a small room and it’s more than I needed), then the RB42’s gimmick of amazing bass isn’t needed.

Around that price I would also check out the renound Elac 2.0 B6.2 for $225

And maybe the Emotiva B1 for $230

I know said sub $100 but I’m going to show you these anyways. They’re $300 speakers on sale for $150, so you’re spending a bit more than $100 but getting $300 of sound from them. They’re really good, and chances are you won’t need a sub.

I pulled the trigger on the Music Hall – MMF-2.2.

225 with free shipping. Seemed like the best deal that I could find. Hopefully Music Direct ships quick. I need it by Friday, or I have to reassess.

Also picked up some ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2 Bookshelf Speakers for 149.

What else am I missing? Any other tips / advice on setup?

Thank you to all who responded. Huge help!

Hey guys total newbie here with some questions.

For great sound in a small room for home theater audio/digital music but that’s also simple would 2 bookshelf speakers do well or will I need a sub woofer? 2 free standing speakers would do? I would hate to buy stands for the bookshelf speakers when the freestanding ones would take up the same room.

What do you guys think of ELAC? They’re currently half price off on amazon.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07B4Q5587/ref=s9_acsd_hps_bw_c_x_1_w

I don’t mind spending under 1 grand on a pair or for the speakers themselves but what else would I need?

Edit: This is essentially an upgrade from the sound coming directly from my TV and my current best music experience is listening in my car.

My first choice between the 2 brands would be the 6.5″ mid bass driver ELAC B6.2 on sale.

Fluance seems to only make 5.25″ bookshelf speakers. The newest Fluance signature series may compare well to the ELAC B5. I would try the 5.25″ Fluance signature series over the smaller ELAC B4.

Alright cool.

> decent bass

Alright yeah floorstanders can do that.

> $150 per speaker

Oh yeah we can’t do that.

You want bookshelf speakers.

Ascend Acoustic CBM-170

HSU HB1-MK2

Those would be your best options.

Studio Monitors: 8″ on sale JBL 308P MkII $250 a pair, or a different coupon code JBL 308P MKII if the first one doesn’t work.

Passive speakers: Speaker recommendations from AverageJoe’s Bookshelf and r/HTBuyingGuide Speakers.

Popular ELAC sale ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2 $150 or ELAC Uni-Fi $350. Or KEF Q150 sale $300.

Internet Manufacturer Direct can be a good bang for the buck with 30 day in home trials so you can demo 2 or 3.

 • Philharmonic AAPM $290 + shipping. (14 day in home trial.) They are recently upgraded with great Morel tweeters and have one of the best low ends of 6.5″ speakers in the under $500 bookshelf price range so they don’t necessarily need a subwoofer.

>The new Plus AA monitor retains the excellent Parts Express 6.5″ woofer. We are not aware of any woofer near its price that can provide such deep bass response. Although we have specified the bass reach very conservatively at a -3 dB point of 48 Hz, the monitors will in fact produce very audible output at 34 Hz.

 • Ascend CBM-170 or the compact HTM-200, either pair is $300 + $30 shipping. Factory direct from California. Neutral sound with a flat frequency response. Best budget audiophile and home theater speakers I have found and own for under $500. SEAS of Norway tweeters, custom mid-bass drivers, double layer crossover network. Great highs, mids and lows. Nothing missing, nothing overly accentuated. Best with a subwoofer.
 • Chane A Series, $290 + shipping. Flat planar tweeters and split-gap mid-bass.

DIY: Kits include pre-cut cabinets. Glue, solder, paint, assemble. Compare built speakers costing 2 to 3 times as much.

Speaker wire and stands:

Speaker stands at Audio Advisor and most are also available at Amazon. Or Monolith by Monoprice heavy duty, half price of name brand equivalent.

Amps/Receivers

AV receiver: If ever using with a 4K TV, Denon AVR-S540BT $150 refurbished 5.2 with optical input DAC and HDCP 2.2 and HDMI 2.0B for 4K video switching.

Stereo receiver: Onkyo TX-8220 $200. Optical input DAC and subwoofer out RCA jack.

Mini amps: SMSL SA50 $65, Dayton Audio DTA-120BT $75, Micca OriGain $80 or $100 with USB input DAC.

Power amps: Small footprint power block Franklin Audio IA150 $130, Dayton Audio rebrand, try the $10 off coupon. Audio Source AMP100VS $120.

Subwoofer: Low budget basic entry level minimum Dayton Sub1200 $138 and try the $10 off coupon.

> For example, is a $200 DAC and $300 speakers a good combination, or should it be $100 DAC and $400 speakers etc?

If you’re only spending $500, I think a $20 DAC would be your best bet.

I think a good 2.0 system can be had for this price range.

A Denon receiver will give you plenty of power and has every option you need.

Now we get to speakers. For Symphony and Orchestra music, I usually like bigger speakers. They have a much easier time reproducing something large, like an organ or a tuba or whatever.

HSU horn bookshelf speakers are a fantastic bet. They have the dynamics because of the horn, but the 6.5″ woofer adds a decent amount of low end extension.

Ascend Acoustic CBM 170 are another great bet. They’ll be a bit less fun than the HSUs, but they’ll still sound great.

My favorite of the bunch for this kind of music would be Elac Debut B6.2. They’re very well designed, and do a lot great. I use mine whenever I listen to piano or jazz music, as I feel they get the dynamics and detail just right. They’ve got a ton of low end extension, and a front facing port so placement isn’t as big of an issue. They’re a really fun speaker.

If you have some specific music in mind, I’ll listen to it on the HSUs and the Elacs and let you know what I think. I don’t have access to the Ascends right now though. Sorry.

The surrounds being in the ceiling is mildly problematic, as they should also be ear level. You might be able to reuse those spots for Atmos, depending on the locations. I would recommend doing the wiring for 5.1.4 or 7.1.4, so that future expansion is easy.

https://www.dolby.com/about/support/guide/speaker-setup-guides/5.1.2-overhead-speaker-setup-guide/

https://www.dolby.com/about/support/guide/speaker-setup-guides/7.1.4-overhead-speaker-setup-guide/

Your priorities should be good subwoofers, good centre channel, and basic acoustic treatment. Good quality bass and dialogue is what you need for movies. The multiple subwoofers is particularly important. Another factor is proper speaker distance from the walls.

That leaves you $500 for the acoustic treatment. The best economical route is building yourself with mineral wool panels (commonly called Roxul or Rockwool). Companies like GIK Acoustics sell similar products, but at a greater cost.

For placing absorption panels, start with late reflections like ceiling and rear wall, followed by the strong side wall reflections. You can also use panels to reduce problems like SBIR, but you need a lot of them for that.

Maybe not a signification difference in sound between the RT82 and EVO. Maybe a bit of a difference in the cartridges.

Turntable > external or built in phono stage preamp > stereo or AV receiver or integrated amp > passive speakers.

I have a Cambridge Audio AXR85 ~~$399~~ $269 with built in phono preamp and Ascend CBM-170SE, on sale B-Stock $288.

The Elac B6.2’s are on sale on amazon right now for $250 and will, in my subjective opinion, bury those Polks. The debut 2.0 series is also very fleshed out for home theatre so upgrades will be easy and they go on sale on amazon all the time.

That said, speaker recommendations are tough, because what sounds good to some might not sound great to you. I believe bestbuy carries Elac so maybe go have a listen and then order them from amazon to save the cash.

Okay cool! I think a pair of neutral to warm speakers combined with a nice sub and receiver would be a great way to go.

I’ve got three speakers that I think would work well for you.

The first is a pair of HSU Bookshelf speakers. Unlike some other horn speakers, these are very neutral sounding. They do have a bit of fun dynamics as well, making them easy yet fun to listen to.

Next would be a pair of Ascend Acoustics CBM-170. These are neutral, but just a tad on the bright side in my opinion. However, they have a silk dome tweeter, so while they may be bright, they aren’t fatiguing at all. Great all-around speaker.

Finally, the Elac Debut B6.2. These are super easy to listen to. They are just a tad laid back, but have tons of clarity somehow. They are really an impressive speaker. Everyone has done a review on them, so feel free to look around for more info. The HSUs and Ascends are harder to find a ton of info on since they’re internet direct rather than just something you can get on amazon, but they’re still great.

I said ‘finally’ with the Elacs, but I’ll throw one more in just for good measure. Wharfedale Diamond 225. They retailed originally at $450 and now are $350, which is awesome. They’re a very warm speaker, so I don’t think they’ll be what you’re looking for since you said ‘warm to neutral’, but I just thought I’d throw them out there. They have an extremely sweet midrange though.

Anyways, you’ll want to add a sub to those.

Disclaimer, I haven’t heard this sub, but it gets rave reviews. The HSU subwoofers are supposed to be absolutely fantastic subwoofers. Clean tight bass that digs deep.

I really like Rythmik subs. The servo technology is really awesome. They can get low and sound great while doing it as well.

In addition, you’ll need a way to power everything. Depending on what you spent on those, you’ll have like $200-$300 left.

You don’t want a chip amp. Something like a SMSL AD18 will work, but it won’t sound the best. Chip amps distort a lot when you start to turn them up a little, which isn’t what you want. They also struggle with dynamics and slam.

Something like a home receiver would be the best option for under $200. That range is kind of no-mans-land. Chip amps go up to about $150, and integrated amps don’t start until $350. (Integrated amps are just amps made specifically for 2 channel music basically, rather than a receiver that does everything).

This Yamaha is the cheapest integrated amp you can get, and it will be better than a receiver or a chip amp.

And if you need speaker cable, just buy some in bulk, but I think you’ve already got some.

If you don’t think you’ll want a sub (which is very possible, especially with these options) you will have a few more options.

You can get that integrated amp and a pair of Ascend Acoustic Sierras which are absolutely phenomenal speakers. They’re just a tad on the warm side of neutral. They might even be just neutral. It’s close, but they’re good. All around just a fantastic speaker. They get down to 44hz, which is pretty low, so you’d probably be fine without a sub. I really like these speakers.

A pair of Wharfedale Dentons if you like the retro look. I haven’t heard these, but they’re supposed to have a very nice smooth presentation, a bit on the warm side. I’m not sure though.

Monitor Audio Bronze bookshelves. Again, I haven’t heard these, but they’re supposed to be pretty neutral. If you go up to the Silver series they apparently get better. Makes sense to me haha.

I’m a huge fan of these Wharfedale Reva towers. That being said, I haven’t heard the bookshelf version of them, but I imagine they are fantastic. And, in my opinion, they’re some of the prettiest speakers out there. Absolutely beautiful finishing on that wood. The towers are very neutral sounding. The bass is clean and tight. Vocals sound very natural.

I threw a lot at you. Now, what would I get, personally.

I would go with a 2.0 setup for now, and save for a pair of subs in the future (yes, I said pair).

However, seeing as you currently already have a receiver, I might spend my whole budget on a pair of speakers and plan to buy a receiver in the near future when budget allows. If I did this, I would go with one of two things:

The Wharfedale Reva Towers would probably be my first choice.

Close to that would be a pair of Quad S-2 bookshelf speakers. Very close. The ribbon tweeter there is a lot of fun. It has the detail that a metal tweeter would have, but without the sharpness.

Alright, let’s say you want the whole system now. I would get the Yamaha Integrated, the HSU subwoofer, and a pair of HSU bookshelf speakers. They’re just a lot of fun to listen to.

If you wanted to go without the sub for now, it would be one of two options again.

The Yamaha integrated, of course with both.

For speakers, I would pick either the Ascend Sierras or the Wharfedale Reva 2 bookshelves. Like I said, I’ve only heard the tower Revas, but I can’t imagine that the bookshelves would be bad after hearing the towers.

Sorry for the wall of text.

How does this all look? Any questions?

Buy both, just the bookshelf pairs or even just a center of each for a bit smaller return box and shipping cost. Then return what you don’t like and buy the rest of what you do like.

Good sale on the ELAC Debut B6.2 $230, and matching C5.2 center $190 = $420 shipped

Also similar to the Emotivas:

Larger 6.5″ HTD Level 3 $320 (For black color, Pre-order. Ships late November, 2018.) and center $210 = around $550 shipped (Free returns within 30 day in home trial)

Chane 1.4 $340 and Chane 2.4 center $280 = around $670 shipped

Or similar to the ELACs:

Ascend CBM-170 $300 and CMT-340 center $300 = around $650 shipped

Budget option, smaller 5.25″, 3x Wavecrest Audio HVL-1, order here on sale $80 each at the Ascend website. 2 + 1 for the center horizontally = $275 shipped

Does the Woburn have better volume control with other audio sources? Is the Woburn louder with other audio sources, how much?

2 speakers will give you stereo separation, imaging and soundstage.

Since you already have a class D digitally controlled amp in the Woburn consider passing on another one with the Fosi since it is also class D solid state, the tubes are a buffer and mostly for show and upgrading to a fully analog class A/B amp in a stereo receiver.

For the best value what is a nearby town or zip to search for used options?

New analog stereo receiver: Yamaha R-S202 ~~$149~~ $99.

If there is also a TV in the room an AV Receiver with 4K HDMI switching: Denon on sale starting at $229. Then you can later optionally add more speakers for movie, TV, and DVD audio surround sound.

Keep using the phono stage preamp in the turntable. You can try a better external one later. Put your budget into the best speakers then the best amp you can get now.

Amazon does have the 2.0 / 5.25″ version supposedly – but about the same price $249 (1 left).

The weird part is Amazon’s listing for the 6" has an incorrect graphic, explaining it has a 5-1/4" driver.

KEF Q100 are sold out from the KEFdirect.com closeout sale at $250 a pair and Amazon raised the prices back up to $550.

Check out Why You Shouldn’t Buy a Soundbar by htmod.

The speakers and woofer boxes in HTiB packages are not very good and not worth spending any money on. Go with better separate components. Starting with a decent 2.0 will be better than a cheapo 5.1 and you can add on to a decent 2.0 to make a great 5.1 over time.

Receiver: Denon AVR-S540BT $150 refurbished 5.2 with optical input DAC and HDCP 2.2 and HDMI 2.0B for 4K video switching.

Speakers: ELAC half price sale Debut 2.0 B6.2 $150 with Debut 2.0 C6.2 Center $140. Or for a lower budget, Sony Core $73 and Center $73.

Then save up for a subwoofer to add later: Low budget Dayton Sub1200 $138, or the Dayton Audio SUB-1500 $188 and try the $10 off coupon for either.

Low budget side surrounds: Dayton Audio B452 $28. If you can’t run speaker wire for the side surrounds you don’t have to add them.

For $500, I think you could do much better with passive than powered. That receiver that you mentioned on craiglist would be perfect. For speakers, you’ve got quite a few options.

Elac Debut B6.2. These are quite netural with a good amount of bass. Definitely just a “safe bet” I’d say.

Wharfedale Diamond 225. First of all, they’re gorgeous. Second, they sound great. They’re very warm sounding, so the bass and midrange is very sweet, and the top end is rolled off a bit, to make them easier to listen to for extended periods of time. They come in a bunch of different colors too.

HSU HB-1 MK2. Personally, these would be my choice. They’re very neutral, have great vocal presentation, and a good amount of bass. They’re a bit more ‘fun’ than the Elacs in my opinion. I have them in black but I bet that red is great in person.

Ascend CBM-170. These are just a tad on the bright side in my opinion. They have a very clean and quick midrange, which I love, but they sacrifice bass for that. If you’re not going with a sub, these might not be the best if you still want some lower frequencies.

That should be a good place to start. Let me know if you’ve got any other questions!

Don’t buy the JBL 305 unless you’re mixing. There’s a host of issues and challenges that come with them (lack of upgradability/flexibility, limiting subwoofer choice, need for an interface using balanced outputs, audible hiss). It’s not that they’re bad speakers… just for an ordinary consumer, no compelling reason to put up with problems if all you’re doing is listening to music.

I suggest the following:

ELAC Debut 2.0 b6.2

SMSL AD18

And save $10 for the required cables/wires.

Edit: As a bonus, you can ditch getting a DAC or interface later… the SMSL has an optical input. You can even sell your current interface if so inclined.

> placed against the wall

> The foot print can be no larger than 12″x12″ but I would prefer smaller if possible

> walnut or close to it

> under $500 for a pair

Alright, let’s see what we can do!

First off, I want to say this. I usually don’t recommend towers, since they’re just a more expensive version of bookshelf speakers with very little benefit. Just for fun, I’ll throw an example at you. Elac is one of the most popular brands. This is their bookshelf speaker, at $350. And this is the tower counterpart for $350 each. So twice the price. According to the website, the towers get down to 42Hz and the bookshelves get down to 44Hz, so you’re barely getting anything out of the towers. The only actually difference is how loud they’ll get. Really though, any bookshelf speakers with a 6.5″ driver (like those elac bookshelves) are going to get plenty loud if you’re 10 feet away from them. Even 5.25″ drivers would be fine honestly.

With that out of the way, let’s get started.

I can actually only think two things that fit what you want. Jamo S-805 are the first. They’ve gotten some good and some bad reviews though, so I’m not sure how they are. Also, the walnut is $100 more than black or white, which is pretty interesting. I guess you’re paying for the look (which, I’ve got to say, they definitely look great). For not much more money, you could complete the set. The second thing I know of would be these by Fluance. I only know one person that has heard them and he said they were very bad. I trust him so I personally would count those out, which really just leaves you with the Jamos.

I’d like to talk about the options if you extend your budget a bit. At $325 a piece (so 650 total) you could get a pair of Klipsch towers in Walnut of course. For the same price, you could get some PSB Alpha T20 towers, which, if they’re anything like the bookshelf version, I absolutely love. For $600 you could get the Wharfedale Diamond 240. I’m currently listening to the Diamond 225s at my desk while listening to this, and I like them quite a bit. I imagine the towers are great as well. Anyways, I know your budget is $500, but spending a bit more will get you something actually worth having. As it is, I wouldn’t want any tower speakers under $500. Putting size and color restrictions on it just makes it that much harder.

I would like to talk about bookshelf speakers as well. First things first, speaker stands. About $100 for a pair. That still leaves you with $400 for bookshelf speakers. Some options would include those elacs in walnut, the Wharfedales that I’m listening to now, and Klipsch RP-600M in walnut. This gives you the same sound quality as the towers that we just talked about, but meets your budget, size, and look requirements.

One more thing before you go, because I’m sure you probably didn’t think of it. You could build your own speakers. Before you get worried about it, don’t. It’s quite easy, and you can finish them to look however you want. Also, anything that you build will sound better than what you can buy at the same price. There are plenty of options, but this pair of towers is probably what I’d go with. Another very popular pair would be good, but the design of them requires some distance from the wall, and that’s not going to work for you. That Amiga kit comes with pretty much everything you’d need. When you go to make it a surround system, this for the center and these for the sides would match. They’re designed by Paul Carmody and should all have the same sound signature.

Anyways, I threw a lot at you. Please let me know if you’ve got any more questions!

If you go with RP-160M get the Klipsch RP-250C. The RP-450C may be overkill for bookshelf speakers and is probably best with the towers.

Same for the ELACs on sale. ELAC Debut B6.2 $230, and matching C5.2 center $190 = $420. I think the larger C6.2 is best with the towers. The ELAC may be enough of an improvement over the Pioneers, especially with the C5.2 center that is larger than your current center. The SP-C22 is under-matched to the SP-FS52 and is best paired with the SP-BS22 bookshelf speakers.

If you go with a 10″ subwoofer, HSU Research VTF-1 MK3 on sale for $425 shipped. Or save up a bit while waiting for the 12″ Rythmik LV12F for $550 shipped to be available soon. Currently shown is the rear ported version. Contact Rythmik for details and estimated ship dates. The 12″ HSU VTF-2 MK5 is $610 shipped.

Around $400 for me would be these:

Under budget bookshelves – Elac B6.2 for $299

Under budget floorstanders (they’re ugly but they sound great) – Pioneer SP-FS52 for $260

Little over budget, low on bass but lovely sounding if it’s not a huge room – Martin Logan LX16 for $470

Quite a bit over budget bookshelves – Wharfedale Denton for $499

The Fluance RT82 is a good value. By the time you get to the RT85 the Pro-ject Debut Carbon EVO is worth it for $100 more. You can change the stylus or cartridge on the EVO, you can’t later upgrade the tonearm on the RT85 that is the same one as on the $300 RT82.

Start with an integrated amp or stereo or AV receiver and many have a built in phono stage preamp to start with. Don’t bother starting with an external phono stage preamp if there is one built into your speaker amplification. Put that external phono stage preamp budget towards the best speakers you can get and you can upgrade to an external phono stage preamp later.

Speaker amplification:

 • Yamaha A Series $299+.
 • NAD C316BEE V2 $449, or $383 open box, or $359 factory refurbished.
 • Cambridge Audio AXR85 $399.
 • Or if there is also a TV in the room an AV receiver with 4K HDMI starting at $329 with a built in phono stage preamp. Then you can optionally later add more speakers for movie and TV surround sound.

If the LP60 is having speed inconsistencies it may need a new belt. Though yeah even with a new belt on the LP60 the RT82 will have better speed consistency, lower wow and flutter, better tracking and a better cartridge and stylus.

15×15 is a medium size room. Better and usually larger speakers are not all about more volume and power trying to be heard throughout your entire home into other rooms. Better and usually larger speakers are about a better frequency response, more detailed highs from a better tweeter and better mid range and bass response with a larger better mid bass driver and a better crossover. Ideally spend just as much on the speakers as on the turntable, or buy used for half the cost, to try to get the most sound quality that you can out of the turntable.

Popular on sale speakers:

It could be the settings in the receiver, not a setup issue with the speakers.

The 5.25″ Sonys are $169 MSRP and are a good value on sale for $88. They should sound better than the 2.5″ Klipsch however the Klipsch will have lower bass because they have a subwoofer.

If you want lower bass with the Sonys or with most any speakers then add a powered subwoofer to the setup.

ELAC Debut B6.2 $289.

Some other options:

 • 6″ Canton GLE 420.2 ~~$599~~ $249.
 • 6.5″ Infinity Reference R162 ~~$449~~ $249. Large cabinets. However the Infinity towers are only $50 more. Dual 5.25″ Infinity Reference 253 ~~$449~~ $149 each, by 2 for a pair.
 • 6.5″ Ascend CBM-170 SE $349 so B-stock on sale $288 pair and you may not even be able to find a cosmetic blemish. Neutral sound with a linear frequency response and a great mid range that many speakers in the price range lack. Manufacturer direct value, compare to retail speakers costing $500.

I was kinda joking with the soundbar comment. 🙂 Good way to get the crowd going here.

Room is 13ft deep (not including nook) away from TV and 22ft wide. Viewing area is more like 13ft by 18ft.

Can’t do in wall outside nook on right – HVAC unit in the wall.

I’ll say $2k budget total for AVR and speakers, but I’m not overly concerned about it. Don’t want to spend more than necessary, but I’m not exactly limited at $2k. Just a number that sounds nice.

Here’s what I’m thinking so far:

Denon AVR-S750H

https://www.costco.com/.product.1360461.html

ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2 Bookshelf

https://www.amazon.com/ELAC-Debut-Bookshelf-Speakers-Black/dp/B07B4Q5587/

ELAC Debut 2.0 C5.2 Center

https://www.amazon.com/ELAC-Debut-Center-Speaker-Black/dp/B07B4Q5LW2/

Haven’t decided on sub yet. Currently well under budget, which is fine with me. I like what I’ve read on the ELAC Debut, and they are front ported. But the Level THREE you linked looks nice as well. I’m pretty new to all of this, so researching quality speakers atm. Thanks for recommendations.

I agree with all of this! u/radimus1 and u/sharkamino know their shiz.

If auto-stop is a must, then it seems like a choice between vintage or the RT82/85. If you run into trouble with a vintage full-auto who knows what that could cost you (perhaps very little).

The Sony STR-DH190 is an easy, solid choice in this budget range. I suggest at least a cursory review of a couple of integrated amps but the speakers you choose MAY affect this choice. With all of these, you can skip the Mani for now and upgrade later IF you feel the need for a possible incremental improvement.

Yamaha A-301 Integrated Amp $350 You may be unlikely to use the subwoofer output but the digital input may prove useful.

Cambridge AXA35 $350 Straight up, Solid amp that isn’t distracted by bells, whistles or frills.

Marantz – PM5005 **FACTORY REFURBISHED** $379 I would stick with one of the above new, unless you have a lifelong dream to own a Marantz amp, in which case, I’d personally save until the budget can include it.

RT82 + Sony Rec. leaves you around $530 for speakers

RT82 + Int Amp leaves you with around $350 for speakers

(upgrade to Ortofon 2M Blue or better down the road)

Speakers to also consider:

Wharfedale Diamond 225 Bookshelf 6.5" $300 (black or walnut)

ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2 Bookshelf 6.5" New $251 in the last 11 days these went from $320 to $400 at Crutchfield so if these look like your choice you MAY want to act soon.

Dali Spektor 2 Bookshelf 5.25" New $349 (may take 4 to 6 weeks to ship)

Wharfedale Diamond 240 Towers 2x 6.5" woofer 5.1" mid New $599 / Scratch and Dent $425

Infinity R253 Towers 2 X 5.25" woofer 5.25" mid New $400 (for 2)

JBL Stage A180 2x 6.5" New $480 (for 2)

These are just my thoughts… I hope you find some beautiful sounding/looking gear to bring sweet rich music to work with you.

Avoid the R-51M. Basically a lesson in how to design bad speakers. Excessive treble and inconsistent off-axis response. Elac Debut 2.0 B6.2 are much better at the same price, especially if used without a subwoofer.

https://www.amazon.com.au/ELAC-Debut-Bookshelf-Speakers-Black/dp/B07B4Q5587/

You can get a TPA3255 amp for about $120. It has enough power to drive your speakers to the point you can’t tolerate more. No point blowing your budget on a better amp, it won’t improve the sound. Save up for a subwoofer instead.

Both the soundbar and the small inexpensive and plastic home theater in a box Onkyo speakers are a sound quality bottleneck for the LP60.

If you want better sound quality upgrade to at least a better pair of speakers with the Onkyo receiver, or just the 3 front speakers for movies and TV and 2 for the turntable or all 5 speakers and then from the passive Onkyo subwoofer to a powered subwoofer.

Pass on the older RT81 that is not worth buying since the newer improved Fluance RT82 adds the new optical sensor speed controlled servo motor for much lower wow and flutter and the speed won’t drift since the speed is being monitored 400 times a second. Pass on the RT83 since the cartridge is not any better.

Yep, the Sony STRDH190 $149 is good to start with and has a built in phono stage preamp for the RT82 as well as Bluetooth built in.

Keep in mind that the first 2 things that have to go to get closer to decent sound are bluetooth and integrated preamps.

Assuming you’re American (and arranged in order of importance):

 1. $299 – Elac Debut 2.0 B6.2 speakers – if you have money to spare, spend it on better speakers than these
 2. $249 – Fluance RT81 turntable
 3. ~$150-$200 – Sony STRDH190 stereo receiver

Total: ~$750. If you find things on sale, or have money to spare, spend it first on better speakers, then on a better turntable, then on a better receiver/preamp.

The other thing to keep in mind that everything is relative. A $10 set of samsung earbuds will sound great. Right up until you hear a good pair of $50 iems. Which sound great until you’ve heard a great pair of $100 iems. And on and on.

Even a toy setup with an LP60 can sound great, until you’ve heard something slightly better. You don’t know what you’re missing until you’ve heard it.

What is your room size LxWxH?

New:

 • 6.5″ ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2 are pricey at $470.
 • 6.5″ Axiom M3 $508 are made in Canada and may be better for $40 more.
 • 5.25″ ELAC Debut Prima $199 are less than half the price of the B6.2.
 • 5.25″ Wharfedale Diamond 220 $385 are good however they may not necessarily be worth $185 more than the Prima. Also consider the larger 6.5″ 225 model if you can find a good price.
 • 5.25″ KEF Q150 $399 are popular and cost less then the B6.2.

I kinda follow your logic on this. What’s the point of a really nice system if you can’t ever turn it on. However, if you have the budget you can certainly step up in your quality. If you can afford larger speakers they might be worth it to get that extra low end without getting sub. However, keep in mind that bass is bass no matter the source. You just need to ask yourself do I want a sub at this point? If you’re in an apartment then I would think you could skip it for you. Just get some books that will go lower. Considering your budget I would look at some larger books, if you don’t want towers, that will give you a more full range sound. That way you’re not having to buy better speakers down the road. Just get a good 2.0/3.0 setup now.

Here are some I would consider. They all have centers available in the series so you’re covered there.

The TV seems to have Bluetooth, BUT you won’t get a 3D sound from portable speakers, unless you set them up every time. So you would first have to open up the JBL Connect app (downloadable from the Play store or App store, but has lots of glitches), and then make sure both speakers are connected, and then put them into stereo mode, and then make sure the host speaker (and not the slave) is connected to the TV as well as your phone. The slave speaker has to strictly be connected via Connect+, and not to your phone or to your TV. It’ll probably take around 1-2 minutes every time to just connect the speakers in stereo and everything, and you will have to do that every time. Your TV seems to have Bluetooth, so it would probably work if you don’t mind going through the hassle.

2*CHARGE4 is a great choice IMO if you’re dead-set on the “portable speaker at home” route, but TBH the sound will be at least 2x better and more “3D” if you just get stereo speakers, you don’t have to get a home theatre.

Something like this will sound much better than the CHARGE.

Bookshelf speakers are better in most price ranges.

With tower speakers, you’re paying for more volume, and that’s pretty much it. You get a bit more bass, but not enough to make it worth it.

The RP-600M are much better than the R-610F.

So basically, tower speakers sound the same as their bookshelf counterpart, but just get louder. You’re paying a lot for more volume, that usually you don’t even need.

Let’s look at Klipsch. The R-51M are the bookshelves and the R-610F are the floorstanding version. The bookshelves are $290 and the towers are $480. You’re paying almost $200 and getting no benefits. For that extra $200, you could get a much better pair of speakers.

Elac is the same way. I’ll go with the non-sale pricing here. The Debut B6.2 are normally $350. The floorstanding version, the Debut F6.2 are $450 for a pair. You’re paying an extra $550 and getting almost no benefit. You’re getting a bit more bass (not much – the bookshelves get to 44hz and the towers get to 39hz), but not enough to say that $550 is worth it in my opinion. For the price of the towers, you could get much better speakers. SVS, Salk, Ascend, etc are all on the table at that price point.

When I built my budget setup I went Elac Debut 2.0. They have a very neutral sound and I’m really happy with them.

You could go with:

Two pairs of ELAC B6.2 for $560.00 total.

The C6.2 for $329.

That would take care of your main five speakers.

For Atmos: Four Micca R8C for $240 total.

The most reccomened subs are from SVS or Hsu. Spend a significant amount here.

If you are going with a subwoofer and your room i only 20×20 there really isn’t any reason, besides aesthitics, to go with floor standing speakers.

Edit: hold off buying any speakers until black Friday. These will usually go on sale. You could also same a bit of money buying used on Amazon.

The Pioneer setup has been on sale for less and the small center is only best paired with the bookshelf speakers, not the larger towers.

Internet direct can be a good bang for the buck. Most with 30 day trial periods. See HTD.com Level 3 or Chane A Series

Only the 3 front speakers need to match. The surrounds and subwoofer can be from any brand.

Great subwoofers start at around $500 from SVS, HSU or Rythmik. Or look for a used one. If you have to go budget, Franklin Audio FPS10 closeout for $120. It is a rebranded Dayton Sub-1200 for $30 less. Or a Dayton 1500 or BIC.

Use the rest for some amazon basics speaker wire and banana plugs and stuff. Save up to get a matching center channel and a subwoofer. If you want some speaker stands, consider these.

Or you could sacrifice a lot of quality that you can carry forward and get cheaper stuff that you’ll later want to replace. Your choice, but this is the route I’d recommend. I absolutely love these speakers and they are really cheap for the quality. During the holidays you could find them cheaper, but they’re still well below the regular price of $300.

Some considerations: motherboard audio is notoriously bad. You should consider (now or in the future) a USB DAC (digital-to-analog converter) to pull better sound quality from your motherboard. I don’t know about Europe’s prices, but here in the US there are several good options in the $100 range.

You mentioned not caring about powered vs passive, but given the rest of your needs I think you are definitely in need of a passive speaker setup.

Which leads to speakers: are the Elac Debut 2.0 B6.2 speakers on sale in Europe as well? They’re currently $279.98 here: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07B4Q5587/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_EYSlFb23EE5RM

Add the ELAC Debut 2.0 C5.2 Center Speaker for $199.98: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07B4Q5LW2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_z0SlFbXTDTQEG

Then add some cheap rear speakers (they generally only carry sound effects that don’t require the same quality as the front speakers) and you’ll have a very good setup for around $500. That leaves $300 for a sub and receiver. Is the Monoprice Premium Select 8-inch 200-Watt Subwoofer available there?: https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B019PZ936W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_U4SlFbQDKMD1J

That leaves $150 for a receiver and cables, which you’ll probably have to find used. Just look for something with hdmi or 5.1 analog input, which should be easy to find. I think you will be able to plug your hdmi into the receiver from your video card and switch your computer audio out to the hdmi, even though there won’t be any video coming out. Then you should just need some half decent speaker cable and any modern hdmi cable to get started.

This is just my first intuition. You might look at some Q Acoustic and Wharfdale options, too.

I’d recomend the Fluance RT82 – $300 ,83,84, or 85 ($500) are all the same turntable except for the cartridges and platters. They all have a sensor that measures and adjusts the speed 500 time per second resulting in a very stable and accurate speed. (one of the most important jobs of a turntable). This makes the WOW & Flutter lower (better) than most other modern turntables, including the Debut Carbon. They also come with a very handy auto stop feature.

You’ll need a phono preamp with these so I’d get the Schiit Mani – $129. It’s the best for the price. The Pro-ject Phono Box MM ($79) is good, as is the U-Turn Pluto ($99).

For speakers passive speakers and an amp would be best and provide for a more flexible upgrade path. Maybe the ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2 – $280 with the SMSL SA300 – $140 (also has bluetooth).

Fluance RT82 – $300 + Schiit Mani – $130 + ELAC B6.2 – $280 + SMSL SA300 – $140 = $850

Save $50 bucks by opting for the Pro-Ject Phono Box instead of the Mani and stay within your budget.

If you wanted to stick with powered speakers I hear really great thing about the Vanatoo Transparent Zero Powered Speakers – $360. These also have BT and a really good DAC in case you wanted to hookup a computer or TV.

RT82 + Schiit Mani + Vanatoo’s = $800

I bought my Elac Debut 6.2 bookshelf speakers at a true 1/2 off Black Friday sale three years ago from Crutchfield. I also got the center speaker and the SUB3010 subwoofer at 1/2 off that same day.

What I don’t really understand is where they get the 6″ dimension from on these speaker cones. They are tiny, and nowhere near 6″ that they advertise. I’m kicking myself for not getting the floor standing 6.2 Debut speakers at 1/2 off as well.

To be clear, the prices at Amazon were the exact same as Crutchfield at that time, and they truly were 50% off on that Black Friday sale.

I am using Allison Threes and Allison Eights, with an Allison Four for my center with all upgraded drivers from Kentucky back when Allison upgraded their entire speaker line in my living room. Oh, with the Klipsch R110 SW subwoofer. These Elacs are in the bedroom.

This little cord translate your digital to analog that your sound system puts out then you need a long extension cord of 3,5 to RCA, a 5m long cord costs maybe 10-20$ cheaper if shorter.

Total cost of around 600£ from amazon.uk Probably should have made the link to the american version of amazon but wasnt paying attention just copy paste the names to the american version if need. This is a system you can keep for 10+years and sounds good.

ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2 and if you act quick, Amazon has them listed for less than the B5.2 model at $280. The B5.2s are $10 more. You can get them in either black or walnut. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07B4Q5587

Since you still have $100 get a pair of speakers stands. Buy the ones that put the tweeters at ear level.

For speakers, you can get these for $279 which have rave reviews:

https://www.amazon.com/ELAC-Debut-Bookshelf-Speakers-Black/dp/B07B4Q5587/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=andrew+jones+bookshelf+speakers&qid=1579302470&sr=8-5

Or you can get some Wharfedale:

https://www.amazon.com/Wharfedale-5025941156901-Diamond-220-Walnut/dp/B00TYN3EUC/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=wharfedale+bookshelf+speakers&qid=1579302925&sr=8-5

These are just your options on Amazon, but both have rave reviews and I’m a HUGE fan of Wharfedale stuff.

If you can find some Wharfedale Diamond 7 series on the used market, those are great speakers too. A buddy of mine has them and they’re incredible.

I’d like to point out that magnepans absolutely can not be mounted to the wall.

Anyways, you’ll want something front ported.

If you want ELAC, they were half price $150 last holiday season and may be again. There are better alternatives at full price $300.

Link without all the tracker junk is https://www.amazon.com/ELAC-Debut-Bookshelf-Speakers-Black/dp/B07B4Q5587. All you need is the ASIN# at the end.

You’ve got a variety of music there.

I think that HSU HB-1 speakers are really fun and exciting. They have a horn to give them dynamics, a 6.5″ driver that gives them a good amount of bass, and they’re just clear and clean throughout. I think they’d be good for this vast amount of music.

I think another good option would be a pair of Elacs. Again, decent sized driver for good bass, but they are a bit more reserved. Soft tweeter instead of metal one, so they’ll be a bit more relaxed. The HSUs aren’t forward or bright, but the nature of a metal tweeter is just that it’ll be a bit sharper.

A Denon receiver like this one would be good to power either of these.

If you want a sub, HSU has 2.1 packages where you get a discount on the sub and speakers. See if you can do that. That would be my choice for what you want.

Elac has stuff at that price range. The B6.2 is on sale for a bit more than that and would be really good.

What amp are you planning on using?

A decent amount of this is incorrect.

> typical bookshelf or “smaller” speakers will be unable to produce anything lower than 40hz, because their woofer is generally only 5″ at most in diameter.

Elac with 6.5" woofer

Wharfedale with 6.5" woofer

Daytons with a 6.5" woofer

Gershman Acoustics with an 8" woofer

There are plenty of bookshelf speakers with a woofer of greater than 5″. That’s actually close to the smallest ones.

> floor speakers can go as low as 30hz because their cabinet can hold up to 8″ woofers.

Well, kinda. It’s because they have more space inside of them so they can move more air. The more air they can move, the lower they can usually go. However, a majority of towers actually aren’t designed like this. Most are tuned to similar frequency ranges as their bookshelf counterparts. I did a writeup about this yesterday here.

> dedicated subwoofers are needed to get down to the lowest end of what is possible to hear, and even then it can take goofy sized subs to get down to the bottom of the 20hz scale; 15″ or 18″ subs.

Again, kinda. I’ve heard plenty of towers that get down into the teens. Humans can only hear down to 20hz. Anything lower is just vibrations that we can feel but not hear. Towers can do that. Even those bookshelves I listed with the 8″ driver can get pretty close.

Also, it doesn’t take a 15″ or 18″ sub to get low. This Sunfire subwoofer is a 10″ driver inside of an 11.5″ cube, and it hits 20hz. It probably sounds better than a 15″ or 18″ while doing it. The bigger the driver is, the more weight it has and the harder it is to control.

> it seems like most recommendations on this sub and at budgetaudiophile are geared towards home theaters rather than music listeners

I don’t think so. r/hometheater is usually for that. We pretty much just talk about 2 channel audio here.

For $250, these Elacs will be your best bet. They’re phenomenal speakers, and the sale puts them in your price range.

Wharfedales would work as well, but I think the Elacs would be what you’re looking for since you want more bass.

1) ELAC Debut B6.2

2) You don’t need a DAC for that purpose. A simple 3.5mm to RCA cord would be fine.

The Elac Debut 2.0 B6.2 speakers are great speakers for $200 right now on Amazon. Normally they are $300.

https://www.amazon.com/ELAC-Debut-Bookshelf-Speakers-Black/dp/B07B4Q5587

If you can go up to $300, you won’t get a whole lot better than the Klipsch RP-150M’s on Amazon. These are my choice and my next possible upgrade.
https://www.amazon.com/Klipsch-RP-150M-Bookshelf-Speaker-Ebony/dp/B00RXHEIHE

These Polk S15’s are also great for $178 on Amazon. They are what I own now and love them.

https://www.amazon.com/Polk-Audio-Signature-S15-Bookshelf/dp/B01LVWWZS0

EDIT: These refurbished Infinity R152 speakers I hear are also very good at $140. New they were over $300.

I don’t actually have personal experience with these, but my research has led to these being on my wish list.

31st Jan 2019

In my experience, there are a couple different types of speakers. All speakers are different, but they can fall into a few categories.

The first category is speakers that sound smooth and relaxed, and you just want to turn them up loud. They have detail, but they aren’t throwing it in your face, so you can turn them up super loud and be pleased with the results. These elacs fall into that category.

Another type of speaker is one that has gobs of detail, and you can listen to it at whatever volume you want, and you’ll be happy. Even at quiet volumes, you are getting every little aspect of the song.

That being said, you should definitely get a good setup at work. Since you don’t have optical out, a USB out would be your next best bet. You’d lose a lot of sound quality by using the integrated dac (in case you’re new here, I’ll dive into that a bit. A dac is a digital to analog converter. It takes the 1s and 0s from your computer and turns them into waves that the speakers need. The ones built into computers usually are terrible, and have tons of electrical interference. It is better to get an external one).

Alright, so the speaker that has a lot of detail at low ends, what kind of speaker does that? Well, in my experience, it is a speaker with a metal tweeter. Even at low volumes, a metal tweeter can give you plenty of good sound. A silk dome tweeter may feel lacking, and like you just need to keep turning it up.

Let’s hop into components.

First things first, a dac. You’re at work, so you want it to look nice and be small. I’d get this schiit modi. I have it and absolutely love it. Great for the money. It comes with the usb cable that you need as well (I’m pretty sure. I have the modi 2, the one that came before this).

Alright, now you’ve got a way to make your 1s and 0s into nice squiggly bits. Next in line is an amp.

You don’t need a lot of power if you’re going to be listening up close, so don’t worry about that.

This psa sprout 100 has everything you could possibly want in am amp. First of all, it’s small, desktop friendly, and it looks nice. But past that, it has a lot of good stuff. Remote, headphone out, Bluetooth, you name it. You could use the dac inside of it, but seperates is usually better for a couple reasons. First, if you need to upgrade/change it later, you won’t have to worry about having to find an amp with a dac. Second, having a dac alone will help avoid electrical interference, which can be pretty significant while inside of an amp (where there is lots of power going through there).

Okay, so I’m trying to think of more small amps, and only one more is coming to mind. Most amps are large (like the size of a receiver) and you probably don’t want that on your desk.

The only other one I can think of is the Schiit Vidar. It’s a good amp, but you need a preamp with it, and I know what to do. This guy is the same size as the Schiit dac and can be used as a pre amp. Put them on top of each other and go from the dac into the pre amp into the amp and then out to the speakers. That would be a good setup. However, it’ll be more expensive than the sprout, and the sprout is little and cute. Anyways, if you look at the last picture in the Vali pictures, that’s what your “schiit stack” will look like (schiit stacks are very common/popular around here. They make good stuff).

Moving on. You’ve got all of that and you’re wondering what speakers to get. Kef ls50, without a doubt. If you’ve been around here long (or if you’ve researched speakers at all) you’ll know that these things are basically famous. Absolutely fantastic speakers. Amazing clarity, stunning detail, great vocals, clean tight bass (not very low, but that’s probably okay since you’re in an office). I mean, these things really are special. Also, they’re normally $1300 but they’re on sale for $1000 (the sale ends in a few days I’m pretty sure). Read any review of these things and proper absolutely love them. Also, if you’re worried about the bass output, it might be worth adding an equalizer to your stack so you can lower it if you need. But that can be added later. I’d go without it for now and see what you think.

Those speakers are so good that I actually won’t recommend any others. There’s no need. For close up and quiet listening, those are the ones to get.

Alright, let’s discuss. What do you think of this setup? Too confusing, too expensive, too big? Let me know and I’ll make sure we get you exactly what you’re looking for.

Oh, and get those things off of your desk. I use the little wedge without the lip on it and center them so it looks like the speaker is floating in the middle. But regardless, don’t put them directly on the desk.

Cool, what do you think?

I use the compact and shallow Ascend HTM-200s on my desk. Great speakers with a flat frequency response and neutral sound.

If not using a subwoofer, if you can fit them for their excellent low end as well as great highs and mids, Philharmonic AAPM $290 + shipping. (14 day in home trial.) They are recently upgraded with great Morel tweeters and have one of the best low ends of 6.5″ speakers in the under $500 bookshelf price range so they don’t necessarily need a subwoofer.

Chane A Series, $290 + shipping. Flat planar tweeters and split-gap mid-bass.

Wavecrest Audio HVL-1, order on sale here at Ascend $80 each + shipping. “Budget Ascends” To me, competitive with and less cost than the popular KEF Q100.

They have to be towers instead of bookshelf/monitors on stands? Bookshelf can be a better bang for the buck, especially with a subwoofer if you want deeper lows than a tower may be able to provide.

ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2 are on sale again for half price, $150. Or also on sale, KEF Q150 $300

Speaker stands at Audio Advisor and most are also available at Amazon. Or Monolith by Monoprice heavy duty, half price of name brand equivalent.

Speaker recommendations from AverageJoe’s Bookshelf and r/HTBuyingGuide Speakers

Better bookshelf speakers:

Internet Manufacturer Direct can be a good bang for the buck with 30 day in home trials so you can demo 2 or 3.

 • Philharmonic AAPM$290 + shipping.

 • Ascend CBM-170 $300 + $30 shipping.

Probably ok for $260 a pair.

Will you be adding a subwoofer and a matching center?

I demoed the much smaller JBL Arena B15 which were just ok, nothing special but fine for surrounds.

If going JBL, I would only consider the better Studio series when they are on sale. However, the Studio 280 are twice the price at $500 a pair refurbished right now. The 270s may have been and maybe again go on sale for less. Or Infinity Reference when on sale, the R253 were $400 a pair a month ago.

If you can go to $400, ELAC Debut 2.0 F6.2 half price sale originally $800, should be better.

For the price, bookshelf speakers may give you more quality bang for the buck, especially if you are getting a subwoofer anyway, though there is the cost of stands. ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2 $150 half price sale. Jamo Studio Series S 803 $200. KEF Q150 $300.

I need to build a 2.1 system for around, $400-500. I’ve determined I’m going to get the Dayton 1500 15″ Sub ($188) and this Denon receiver. Now I’m looking for the important part, the speakers. I’m okay with spending $150 for two speakers, would have a really tough time spending more. My primary use for these is to set up next to my TV and watch movies, TV, and YouTube videos.

I found these ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2 speakers on sale for $150, and it seems like as of right now, it’s the best bookshelf speaker from this Black Friday around that price point. That said, I’m seeing these speakers are more for a musical use, anybody know if I should stop myself from getting these because of that? I won’t be able to listen in person.

So I’m by no means a hobbyist. In fact, as of today I just purchased my first pair of ELAC bookshelf speakers. Over at r/buildapcsales, people were raving over these speakers for the price. So I bit! The problem is I know next to nothing about how to set these things up.

I know I need Banna plugs, speaker wire and an amp (and a sub ^(ill probably buy a) ^(Polk) ^(later)). I will be using these with my new PC I’m building currently. I’d also like to be able to run my echo do (mainly for Alexa functions and streaming music) through this system.

I have a few amps in my cart atm via Amazon.

 • Dayton Audio DTA-2.1BT 100W Class D 2.1 Amplifier with Bluetooth and Power Supply $88.75
 • SMSL SA50 50Wx2 TDA7492 Class D Amplifier + Power Adapter $66
 • BT20A Bluetooth 4.2 Stereo Audio 2 Channel Amplifier Receiver Mini Hi-Fi Class D $76.98
 • Lepy LP-2020A Hi-Fi Digital Amplifier $24.39
 • SMSL AD18HiFi Audio Stereo Amplifier with Bluetooth 4.2 Supports Apt-X, USB DSP Full Digital Power Amplifier 2.1 $130.49

So if I’m planning on sync devices via the echo I don’t technically need Bluetooth receiver in my amp, right? What about if I have a Bluetooth in my motherboard? I’m not sure if there’s a difference between devices like keyboards and audio devices with Bluetooth.

Also, while I was looking around for that, I noticed these guys. They actually have a coaxial up top and a woofer on the bottom. If for home theater, also consider if a matching center speaker is available.

The Def Techs D7s are on sale for $400 at Crutchfield.com, though they are a smaller 4.5″ mid bass speakers so you would be planning on getting a subwoofer with them?

Then Philharmonic AAPM for $290 + shipping, which have a great low end and don’t necessarily need a subwoofer for music or right away for home theater. Then a third one later for a center horizontally for vertically, not the smaller older AAC they are selling that only matched the older smaller previous generation AAM.

Or on sale ELAC Debut B6.2 $240

Then be on the lookout for a used SVS or HSU subwoofer or save up for a new one for $500 to $600.

Other speakers, that are best with a subwoofer.

3x Wavecrest Audio HVL-1 and order here on sale $80 each at the Ascend website. 2 + 1 for the center, $240 + $36 shipping

Budget 3 speakers: Polk Audio T15 on sale $60 with the T30 Center for $80 = $140

Those look like surround satellite stands, you would want bookshelf speaker stands, Sanus 31″ or 24″ depending on ear level while seated.

I prefer 6.5″ speakers over 4″ Miccas or 5.25″ Sony for better bass and SPL if not getting a subwoofer at all or right away. Bic Venturi $120 or budget Dayton Airs $50.

If you can stretch your budget or save up, check out the 6.5″ Philharmonic AAM $200 +shipping, 2 week trial period. They have a great low end that don’t necessarily need a subwoofer for music, or right away for home theater. Or Elac B6.2 6.5″ speakers are now on sale for $250. I have Ascend CBM-170 for $300 and am interested in demoing the Chane 1.4 for $340.

Receiver: $150 refurbished Denon AVR-S530BT AV receiver 4k HDMI or the $320 Denon AVR1400 7.2 with Audessy is popular here.

Speakers: I prefer 6.5″ mid-bass drivers over 4″ or 5.25″.

Budget: Bic Venturi $240 for all 3 front speakers.

Better: Philharmonic AAM $300 +shipping. One pair plus a third one as a center horizontally. (Not the smaller older mismatched AAC for the center.) The AAMs have a great low end and may not necessarily need a subwoofer for music or not right away for home theater.

On sale ELAC Debut B6.2 and C5.2 Center, $400

Or other internet direct speakers for a great bang for the buck. Most have 30 day in home trial periods and some have free shipping baked in and a few with free return shipping. A bit dated list but still a good resource. I have Ascend CBM-170s and I may demo the Chane A1.4s.

Surrounds: Micca Covo-S, Polk OWM3, Dayton 4.5″, or Fluance Bipole speakers.

So you’re looking for a 2.0 system primarily for use with music, although also for use with games and movies – that you can upgrade incrementally into a 5.1 surround system at some point in the future.

Generally you won’t find anyone recommending soundbars outside the soundbar subreddit, just a footnote, same with home-theatre-in-a-box type packages. Separate speakers/subs, etc. always perform better for the money, and are far easier to upgrade.

As for realism, I’d say a subwoofer is out of the question at your budget, which is unfortuate if you like a lot of bass heavy music. If you are upgrading in the future, a sub may be the first thing on your list. When that time comes, look into SVS, Rythmic, and HSU Research. Although there are cheaper options out there, cheaping out on a sub is almost never a good idea.

__

As for what you should buy, that depends on the timescale you intend on upgrading things.

If you want this initial 2.0 system to last at least a few years before touching it again, the majority of your money should go on passive speakers, with a smaller amount spent on an integrated amplifier/DAC that can drive your speakers.

I’d recommend the ELAC Debut B6.2 bookshelf speakers along with an SMSL AD18 amplifier.

The advantages of this: It’s a good little starter system that will perform exceptionally (especially for the price) for however long you need it to. Best sound for the money up front/least dependant on upgrades of the suggestions I’ll make.

The downsides of this is: you have no surround sound receiver, so when it comes to upgrading to surround sound – that has to be the first thing you buy. Also, the SMSL AD18 has no way of integrating a sub-woofer, so again, a receiver/amp with a sub-out/preouts would be top of your shopping list no matter what you do.

__

If this system is gonna be a little pet project and you plan on spending more in a few months or the next couple years, then it might make more sense to buy an AV receiver earlier. If you aren’t upgrading for a while, there’s no point buying one early, because they come out annually and add new features all the time, so having a surround sound receiver sat running a 2.0 system for three years isn’t really doing it’s job, and getting more and more outdated the longer it’s sits, you get me?

But, like I say, if you are upgrading soon, then getting an amplifier like the SMSL would be a waste, because you wouldn’t get a lot of use out of it before replacing it.

So, if you are looking to upgrade soon you’d get a receiver first and foremost.

Denon is generally the trusted brand at this pricepoint, just overall better price/performance than the competition. Marantz isn’t far behind as a slightly more expensive option (looking at price performance). Yamaha, Pioneer, and Onkyo aren’t bad either, really you can’t go wrong picking a big brand and reading at least some reviews.

As for what exactly to get, that depends on the features you need. All of them do very similar things, it’s up to you to decide if you need 5.2 or 7.2 channels (How big is your room? Do you have enough places to realistically put speakers?). There a lot of options, and getting a good open-box/certified refurbished unit isn’t a terrible idea if you need to save the pennies.

Of course, spending more on the receiver means less budget for the speakers and so a weaker system when starting out. Overall, it all depends on what you want to prioritise. If you need some more help, let me know what your future timescale is for the system and I can give you some more specific recommendations.

I guess, then that I was trying to find the most similar speaker, I really want to revive this thing, it had crisp drums and nice overall sound. To replace them I bought 2 – Elac debut 2.0 and they are not as nice sounding.

Passive speakers and an amp is definitely the way to go.

You could get these elac bookshelf speakers along with this SMSL amplifier and be good to go.

Those speakers are phenomenal speakers. Very well designed by a well known designer, Andrew Jones. They have a 6.5″ woofer that has plenty of bass, and a nice soft tweeter that sounds great but isn’t fatigueing. They also have a front port, so if you put them near a wall they won’t be affected much by it.

The amplifier is great as well. It has tons of features, and as much power as you could possibly want for a pair of speakers. It has a subwoofer out, in case you want to add one in the future, and it has Bluetooth, in case you want to listen to something from your phone.

This setup is good because if you want to upgrade later on, you’ll have an easy way to do it. You can upgrade the speakers without having to find a powered pair or having to buy an amp as well.

Hope this helps!
