What kind of music do you listen to primarily? I’m not going to lie I have the R1700BT and was highly highly disappointed in the bass even with the control knob all the way up. I ended up buying a separate subwoofer but not all people desire any where near as much bass as I do.
With the subwoofer they sound great for the price. FYI use this link to get the refurbished 1700 pair for $120. Mine actually arrived new not even refurbished, brand new in box I couldn’t believe it. I think I got lucky but definitely still a better bang for the buck than $100 for the 1080T. They periodically aren’t available (sold out) but the they reactivate the link I sent you whenever they get product returns they can resell.
If you listen to enough music where you may desire a sub in the future there is a new option of the R1700BT*S* that has a sub out. I’d recommend that if you can find it for the right price for you. Keep an eye on craigslist and ebay, there’s someone local to me selling the 1700s for $70 NIB.
As for passive/active, I think it also depends on how you intend to use them. I wanted these speakers to attach to my desktop PC and desk, I already have a receiver and speaker setup for my TV/entertainment system so having two receivers and setups wasn’t appealing to me. I decided on active speakers for the computer and a sub that can be plugged into both systems. If you plan to use these on a TV entertainment system throw out everything I said (sorry), I think a receiver and passive speakers would almost always be the way to go due to the efficiency of future upgrading.
