I’m like 90% sure that they’re the Samsung HW-D450s. You should definitely go for these Edifier ones though. I don’t think they even sell the ones I have anymore

if your TV has a headphone out 3.5mm jack, or (less likely) RCA, you can use any set of powered speakers, and they’ll do exactly what you’re describing.

you can get some cheap edifiers and have a huge improvement over your TV speakers for ~$100 https://www.amazon.com/Edifier-R1280T-Powered-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B016P9HJIA/

At this $100 mark for a compact Bluetooth speaker, I’d suggest the UE Megablast (no aux port :'( ) or the Soundcore Motion+

How these will compare to those T100’s, I’ve never heard them so I can’t say, but I can say neither sound nearly as good as the Edifier 1280. These portable speakers aren’t going to compete well with a wired speaker in terms of sound quality.

If your speakers have an AUX input, then I would think they’re powered. ~~You have to plug those speakers into the wall for power, right?~~ Nm, just saw that you’re using a bluetooth speaker. (which is definitely powered) So you just need to grab an RCA<->3.5mm adapter for like $5 or $6.

But I’d really recommend buying some real speakers. At the cheapest, look at some Edifiers for $100. From there, you could also look at Kanto, Micca, Klipsch, Polk, Audioengine, Dayton, Mackie, etc. Just search Amazon for “powered bookshelf speakers”.

Here’s the speakers I use with my CCA in my living room.
https://www.amazon.com/Edifier-R1280T-Powered-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B016P9HJIA

They sound really good, and I can control the volume with my Harmony remote. It comes with a tiny remote, but I already had the Harmony hub so it was just easier that way, plus now I can control the volume with Alexa. These particular speakers have two aux-in ports, though I’m only using one with my CCA at the moment. Read the reviews on Amazon.

Edifier R1280T they are pretty clean, they look and sound very good for $99 dollar speakers. keep in mind I had them on an amp and boosted the bass and it broke one, but I emailed edifier and they replaced it with ZERO hassle, literally said “hey my speaker is broke” they said “send me your amazon order number” hour later “we’ve issued you a new pair, discard others. so I have another set with 1 speaker, that i turned in to a portable Bluetooth speaker.

You’d normally connect those to an amplifier (or preamp and amp, depending whether or not your turntable has a preamp built-in), and then wire the speakers to the amp. For a simpler setup, you can just go with powered speakers, that have the amp built-in. Something like these. I could probably make a better recommendation if I knew whether or not you have a preamp.

Do you want powered speakers as in plug in play. Powered bookshelf speakers don’t need a receiver or pre amp with that turntable. Many recommend these powered speakers for good to start with.

I just upgraded my computer audio to these powered speakers recently:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B016P9HJIA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_E7MCZSG2TT1E7EGFAEHC?_encoding=UTF8&amp;psc=1

They sound amazing compared to my old “pc speakers”. Decent bass if you want it too!

They use regular speaker wire and wire clips so you can place them far apart if needed. The wire they included was pretty short though, so you might need to get some speaker wire.

Good luck!

This one is a great entry turntable. Decent cartridge and had the built in pre-amp. $50 extra bucks won’t make you much of an upgrade so if this is your budget I say pull the trigger. As far as entry level stuff, my $300 U-Turn is considered entry lol.
Use the extra cash to go toward a good set of powered speakers. I suggest the following which are a solid set up for getting into it without dumping tons of cash.

I’m not sure about the components for the integrated speakers as my brother built the record stand himself, but the bookshelf speakers on the shelf are Edifier R1280T Powered Bookshelf Speakers which actually have a pretty nice sound- very balanced; the bass is clear and not muddy and the treble is bright and sparkly without being tin-y. I studied music in college focusing on jazz, so my opinion is based on that background. I can’t speak to how the speakers would behave with heavier music.

I got these. I really like the sound. Bass is quite good. I keep bass at mid level because it gets too bassy for my taste. I linked the canadian listing on amazon, but I’m pretty sure they sell it most countries.

The only thing I could find were these speakers (which probably don’t appeal to everyone): https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B016P9HJIA?aaxitk=jqs15plwFH6hK1R1ooIyzA&amp;pd_rd_i=B016P9HJIA&amp;pf_rd_m=A3DWYIK6Y9EEQB&amp;pf_rd_p=3863651456206764718&amp;pf_rd_s=desktop-sx-top-slot&amp;pf_rd_t=301&amp;pf_rd_i=edifier&amp;hsa_cr_id=2991035080501

Aside from that I got some phone chargers and a lot of error screens while amazon crashed haha.

They are an improvement on what you have. I prefer two full range speakers on the desk, but these will be fine.

If you are in the US, look on Amazon for powered speakers like this set

I recently got a pair of these. They’re awesome and really put out some sound waves. They will need to be equalized as out of the box they can sound tinny. They are only 21W/speaker but they can shake my room when gaming or watching an action movie.

Edit: there is also a bluetooth model available if you wanted that option too. I think they’re like $20 more.

That turntable and a pair of powered speakers is fine. You don’t need to invest in other components. At the absolute worst, you could use a pair of PC speakers. I wouldn’t, but you could. I bought the LP-60X and these Edifier speakers and it works well.

The needle that comes with it is fine if you’re buying it new.

Check out the Cyber Acoustics speakers on Amazon that have a sub. I’ve used a set in the past on a computer and they sounded great.

Honestly, I’m pretty underwhelmed by the BT speaker offerings in 2022. They haven’t really improved much in a long time and sound quality is pretty bad compared to Sonos or similar. I’m a big fan of anything that has a built in Chromecast, if you are set on BT I honestly ended up just getting an Echo. A Google Nest Audio would be good too.

As an alternative, you could consider getting a pair of powered bookshelf speakers and just add a BT adapter. You will get a lot more bang for your buck than with an all in one Bluetooth product

You bet man. The Crosley I am assuming had a built in speaker?

My advice on about the cheaper/easier end of things would be that Audio Technica LP60x like someone recommended ($140), plus some $100 powered speakers from Amazon. That way you don’t have to mess with external preamps or receivers or anything. Others might say it’s not the best set up in the world, but for $240, you’d be hearing a world of difference from a Crosley with built in speaker.

Some speakers are passive which means you need an amp of some type. Some are powered which means you don’t need an amp. Look for powered speakers if you don’t want to buy an amp. People like edifer for what you are looking for.

It will effect sound, placing any sound producing device in a box will alter the sound, create reflections.

But it’s kinda like saying “I’m getting McDonald’s, should I spring the extra money for some high quality ketchup?” Just buy some decent speakers. I recommend edifiers, they’re as easy to set up as a soundbar, have much better sound and they’re cheap.

Powered speakers will usually either have rca jacks on one speaker and a wire connecting the speakers, or will have a 3.5mm (headphone) cable that plugs straight into the turntable.

Any pair of cheap computer speakers would work, but obviously won’t sound as good as higher quality speakers.

Here’s an example of powered speakers. Note the photo of the back connections.

You would want 2 Echos to get stereo separation, and you would have to split the 3.5mm into left and right mono.

Two Echos at the current sale price will set you back $120. It feels a little steep for computer speakers.

A pair of $100 edifiers seems like it would make a better set of speakers.

They definitely don’t fit my definiton of ‘good, and are way overpriced. If you want decent desktop speakers, look into Edifier speakers. They’re small, powered bookshelf-sized speakers that sound much better than newer Logitech junk.

These Edifier speakers are $25 more, but are much more worth the money than anything Logitech.

Not sure if I’m 100% following.

So if I went this route, could I instead use powered speakers such as these, and then wouldn’t need the Pyle mini amp, but would still need the preamp, yes? But because the ones you listed are passive I’d need the Pyle mini amp (Still along with the preamp)?

The RT-81 has a built in pre amp so you can go straight to pair of powered bookshelf speakers, or into a receiver then on to a set of passive speakers.

A good set of, budget friendly powered speakers are these:

Alas no, I ended up sticking with these on the budget I had. They’re good for general use, watching movies and casual music listening. I have a few pairs of good headphones if I’m looking for a more refined auditory experience (Senheisser HD58X, NAD VISO HP50).

There are some options from Edifier that look intriguing though. Here’s their entry level option. Less bass than the Klipsch but probably fuller sound.

I am going to go against any of the input on these. I bought a set because I could modify them to mount them to my 80/20 sim rig.

Turns out their response to high frequency mids is terrible. Engine noises turn to nothing but static.

Might be build quality as well. I have been using some Edifier 1280Ts and they are drastically better speakers for $20 more than this set. https://www.amazon.com/Edifier-R1280T-Powered-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B016P9HJIA

The sub on this set is weaker than the bookshelf Edifiers. You can barely hear it functioning.

Yeah, this is a good value setup. I love t-amps.

The only thing comparable I can think of would be Edifiers, which come with all the necessary cables so the price difference isn’t that big. The Edifiers are newer and look nicer imo, but I can’t comment on a direct comparison of sound quality.

Thanks, I actually already have a converter as part of my set up since my TV output is optical. The reason why I’m using home audio is cost…I was basically using my Edifier speakers I have for my computer and moving them to the TV and plugging the whole set up in:

That’s low, your best bet is going to be getting lucky on Craigslist or at yard sales, thrifts stores, etc., or saving up to grow that budget. If that’s a hard limit though, you’ve still got choices.

The 80 does have a preamp though, which can make things easier in some ways, since now you only need an amp and speakers. Going new, I hear good things about these powered speakers, which you can plug your table directly into and you’re done. There are cheaper options on Amazon if you search “powered speakers” but I recognize this brand. Walmart or Best Buy probably has some, too.

Browse /u/sharkamino ‘s posts for more options, he writes up a lot of recommendations.

I’ve heard a lot of really amazing things about these Edifier R1280T from the budget audiophile community.

Pretty solid sounding speaker that punches above its price class and is powered (meaning you don’t need an external amp to run them).

But also you should check out the sidebar link on r/BudgetAudiophile

The Rumbles get a lot of love and hate. I used the 25 for several years and considered it “good enough” before buying the 40; the difference is night and day, and I can’t really recommend the 25 any more. Try not to judge the entire Rumble line by the 25 (or heaven forbid, the 15).

If it’s just me in the house and I don’t want to shake anything up, I play through my PreSonus Audiobox 96 interface into some Edifier R1280t bookshelf speakers that I use for my desktop. I like those enough that I’m thinking about getting another set for the living room.

Looking at your suggested system, there’s no mention of a subwoofer which is included with this. Is the subwoofer just not that important for general use? Is it more important for more serious or professional setups? Similarly, how important is the amp? Considering buying the speakers and then the amp later when I’ve got more money.

And, off-topic, how do the Micca compare with Edifier R1280T? Both are around the same price point on Amazon right now.

Looks like the 1280t are going for $104 on Amazon (Prime only I think). Are these worth the extra $40?

Alright, a lot to unpack here:

In terms of pure sound quality the hk is much better than the Sony.

The hk has a battery, will last ~4-6 hours of continuous play before needing to recharge.

Bookshelf speaker: check these out. They dont have a battery, but will otherwise do all the same as the sony or HK units.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B016P9HJIA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabt1_KGFVFb4MARSN1

With regard to JBL: I would usually say their products are overpiced, but the XTREME 2 is currently on sale for $150 (as well as some others). I own this one and am pretty happy with it. Will sound good, but not as good as the HK. I’ve never drained it dry, but i get at least 10 hours of battery life out of it.

Edifier speakers, I got them on sale. They’re okay. They have built in eq and volume knobs and get loud enough for my purposes but you’ll want something beefier if you aren’t sitting at the desk in front of them. It did take a bit of tweaking the eq to make it sound right and I have the treble just about maxed out. You’ll probably want a subwoofer if you’re into bass. The model up from it hss a line out from the R speaker for a subwoofer

I posted a few days ago because I had just gotten an audio technica lp120 and I need speakers. After doing some research I think I’m looking for a powered set of speakers and skipping the amp for now. Any suggestions on good powered speakers (preferably that I can get with amazon prime) for around $100 or less? Thanks.

New case? But something tells me you just took the bezel off to mess with us… or if you dont care how it looks, its whatever, but the rest of your setup makes me think thats not the case.

Other than that, a speaker upgrade or headphones would be a solid investment.

EDIT Adding a couple specific recommendations.

The Edifier R1280T is a great budget monitor – and a pair comes in at exactly $100 on Amazon.
https://www.amazon.com/Edifier-R1280T-Powered-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B016P9HJIA

Headphone wise, I highly recommend the ATH-M50’s for a budget headphone, the sound quality is much better than the pricepoint, you can pick them up around $100 on ebay/refurb, but new youre looking at closer to $150. I only make recommendations on products Ive used firsthand and these are one of the first “real” pairs of headphones I bought and still use them occasionally even with the other cans I have around.

Other folks recommending a cooler upgrade, I’d only do that if youre currently running into temp issues. If temps are staying low enough, no sense in spending the $$ unless you just really want to go with something else or have plans to upgrade CPU.

Here are the Edifers Poly is referring to. They have 2 inputs and a remote. You will need a phono pre-amp for the turntable.

Instead of the tuner, consider adding an easy to use with voice commands Amazon Alexa Echo Dot or Input for things like Amazon Music if you have Prime, or Pandora etc, as well as any radio stations, local, or anywhere else.

I mostly use a cheapo bluetooth speaker, an “Oontz”, with an 1/8th jack to play my Circuit around the house and that has worked out really well to stay portable, because really anything is better than the internal speaker.

For the desk, I’ve been using a decent set of Edifiers I picked up for a $100 on Amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B016P9HJIA/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&amp;psc=1

And I mounted a plank across the top for an extra shelf– If you were looking at larger speakers, you could always consider something like that to get the space back from their footprint.

They are standalone speakers. Powered means, well what it sounds like, they’re self powered. Passive means you need a power source, like an amplifier or receiver.

I have these and they sound great once you get the EQ dialed in (about $100). They have on board Amp and don’t need a sub. There are also Bluetooth versions of this as well as other higher end models from the manufacturer.

They’re pretty loud too and the lows are great for gaming to really feel the impact of your actions and actions from others.

I am looking to build my first set up so I can play this stack of records I have accumulated. I was about to pull the trigger on the $100 audio technica player with these speakers but after browsing this sub I am having second thoughts. I like the idea of having that setup for $200 but would be willing to drop a little more if it is absolutely worthwhile. Craigslist around me is kinda dead but there were a few recievers that looks decent at a good price. Can probably find a player at a thrift store but im worried about quality and would prefer to not have to fix it up. Any tips would be greatly appreciated

These guys provide some pretty good sound, but at $100 you can get some better equipment than small satellite speakers. When it comes to sound technology there is no replacement for displacement, so small form factors like these really struggle to produce great sound.

The satellite speakers on the Edifier look like the same R19U that you can normally get for $30 at Amazon, so I guess they’re selling the subwoofer with those for $100+ more? But yeah if you’re spending that kind of money you probably want the Edifier over the Logitech.

Do you have to have a subwoofer, or would the R1280T for $100 do?

I have these plugged into a dot and they are great.

Best part is they have dual active input so my dot goes into one input and my TV into the other and since their both active you don’t have to select input/don’t have to change inputs

I put a headphone splitter on the echo dot and it runs to the speakers and the other to a subwoofer which has a low pass filter (filters out the highs) instead of the Echo sub which is severely limited eg: you can’t use sub with bluetooth if you bluetooth a lot.

The Polk PSW10 is a cheap sub available on Amazon and has a low pass filter, went a different way myself.

Edifier R1280T

Multiple inputs, remote control, easily accessible volume and tone control knobs on the side of the right speaker.

Some folks will suggest Micca PB42X, I’m sure… they aren’t bad, but I don’t advise them… volume knob on the back is a deal killer for me, personally. But, so looking as you’re good with using only digital volume control and only need one set of inputs, they are also a good option.

If you want good stereo sound from Amazon products but don’t want the footprint of a large stereo I’d recommend just getting a Dot 3rd Gen and a set of powered studio monitors instead of a second Amazon device for stereo pair.

Edifier has some decent monitors at a fair price point on Amazon, I’d recommend the 42w version with side controls.

The advantage of doing it this way is that generally there is a better frequency range for sounds, clarity etc are much better, another thing is the Echo seems to listen better at high volumes with an external speaker, it should also add a bit of bass as well, maybe make up for the losses you are having.

Edit* These are the speakers I was referring to. https://www.amazon.com/Edifier-R1280T-Powered-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B016P9HJIA/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

I have a set of powered speakers connected to the dot in my living room, with this companies speakers both inputs are active so I have one from the dot and the other I ran a aux to RCA from my TVs headphone jack to the speakers as well and don’t have to switch inputs when I want to change.

Just going off prices here in Australia. The Logitech’s are $129 for the set while those Edifiers are also exactly $129AUD for the set so I think it’s a fair comparison.

The Edifers will get down to 75hz while that big clunkly logitech sub will only get a bit further down to 55hz. It also doesn’t say where it starts rolling off, pretty sure the Edifiers are -3db at 75hz while the logitechs could be -6db or -10db and still claim it as part of their FR, and given how up front they are about the fake tweeter i’m almost certain that it’s not flat down to 55.
I also guarantee you that the bass from that sub will sound like ass, it will be super muddy and boomy because the sub will be filling in for a large section of low end for those satellites. The sub only has an RMS of 24 watts or something so it’s going to be distorting like crazy at any loud listening levels.

Your choice is then some nicely designed wooden Edifiers with wireless remote, an additional aux input and a silk dome tweeter that will actually sound good, or an ugly set of black plastic Logitech’s with a corded volume knob and big space sucking sub that might make your desk vibrate a bit but will sound awful. For an extra $20 you can get the Edifiers with bluetooth as well.

You don’t even need the airport expresses:

Yamaha WX-010 MusicCast Wireless Speakers have Airplay built in. $70 each sold in white pairs. Black may be more elsewhere. Or $100 Dayton with Wifi/Airplay.

If you want to use the Expresses:

Edifier R1280 $100, or Edifier-R980T for $70. Or Miccas or 4″ or 5″ Swans or Dayton.

Mini amp with bookshelf speakers (Or in-wall or in-ceiling speakers):

You could buy 4x of up to $150 per pair bookshelf speakers and use each one connected to an amp running one channel mono.

Leipei amp $25. If this sounds good, there are many options for 4″, 5.25″ or even a few with 6.5″ mid-bass drivers for more bass, all from $50 to $150.

Will you have remote smart home power control to turn them all on and off?

Airplay alternatives: Sonos One B-Stock $130 due 9/30. Or Alexa Echos for $70 including a smart plug and with play on demand by voice control.

> what are these good for?

A computer where sound quality isn’t a concern – gaming, binging on TV shows, or listening to music as background noise.

> should i get these instead of a soundbar?(probably an intro one as a first-timer getting into audio)

I’m not an audiophile, but have gone through many sets of speakers looking for something I loved to listen to over the years. If any of my friends, who I know aren’t crazy about DIY, were to ask this question, I’d just recommend the Edifier R1280T active/powered speakers ($99 Amazon) for either their computer or TV as a 2.0 setup rather than buying a 2.1 system with huge compromises on both the LR & sub. I can only imagine recommending a soundbar when there are issues aside from sound quality to consider – space constraints or WAF.

My experience with Logitech speakers is you’re going to get very muddy sound (low definition in the high-range) with their full-range 2-3″ speakers. I have some Logitech z-5300Es in my garage that I don’t use for anything because I can’t stand how terrible they sound to me in comparison to the aforementioned Edifiers and even ~$30 Dayton Audio B652s powered by a DTA-1. Obviously a 2.0 setup is going to lack the bass you get from a 2.1, but the improvement in general sound quality is worth it IMO. You can always add a sub to a 2.0 system later (in my case, probably a DIY Voxel sub), but you can’t fix the compromises made in a 2.1 system at the same price point.

The DIY world is where high quality audio lives. Look up some Paul Carmody designs, many available as kits @ Parts Express or Matt Grant’s designs, frequently sold as kits @ DIY Sound Group.

If you want to get into audio, there are GREAT options at the $100-$200 price range for your speakers + an AVR or even a smaller 2- or 2.1-channel amp.

Sorry; got a little carried away considering the OP is a $100 speaker set on sale for $50. I feel like many many people would be just fine with this at $50, but for people like you, looking for higher quality sound, something like this will be $50 wasted searching for something it won’t provide.

I will ALWAYS tell everyone that asks to never ever buy a single thing from Turntable Labs.

I have never before seen a more customer un-friendly business model. You better be very happy with what you buy, because if you don’t like it. They’ll make you pay return shipping. Guess how much that was for a package the size of a turntable? $60-80.

Fuck them, I love supporting small businesses, but they were super unhelpful and you can tell by the tone of their email, that as soon as they said “You will have to pay for return shipping” that they know most people won’t bother. I was able to offload the item locally, but it was a lesson well learned.

Like u/the_rev_j said, powered speakers will get you there. Look into the edifier brand R1208t. They have a pair for around $100 on amazon that are great entry level speakers. Good sound, nice look.

Then if you get into the hobby enough to want to upgrade you can upgrade your table and the speakers will still be able to show the improvement ant you can upgrade speakers later.

Amps are pretty small if you don’t get a surround sound or large complicated one with tons of unnecessary options. Then you can go with passive speakers.

These match together well:

I’m sensitive to highs, and very sibilant sensitive (most people are, just to varying degrees). I’m also into the entry level hi-fi hobby and I’ve spent a lot of time looking at options (I own a lot of headphones and IEMs, but only two sets of speakers due to space).

My recommendation, what I use, is the Edifier R1280T. They’re powered speakers, so no external amp needed (although I do run them through my desk dac/amp stack). They also have their own bass and treble adjustments, so you can easily tweak them as needed for sensitivity. These speakers are very popular and well known for being solid entry level speakers.

You can also get a Bluetooth variant, same speaker, just with Bluetooth. Edifier R1280DB (comes in wood and black finish).

I do catch some sibilance from them occasionally, but it’s almost always from YouTube videos where the person hasn’t done a good job of recording their voice.

Here’s the speaker stands I use with them (I have them on my desk (now sim rig) up over my monitors).

The only dumb question is the one not asked. A 2 channel stereo just has right and left speaker output and only plays stereo. So mostly used for music. Can still be used for TV output, but not the best choice for that. Surround sound stereos offer 5.1 channels (and up 7.1 to 9.2). Meaning a right and left speaker output, a center channel speaker and two rear surround sound speakers and the .1 is for a subwoffer. Most over the air broadcasts, streaming services as well as blueray and dvd players output at least 5.1 dolby now. The reciever decodes this and sends the correct sound to the correct speakers. Watching a movie the left and right play music, the center plays the talking, the surround sound speakers play sounds the characters hear off in the distance and the subwoofer plays the deepest bass sounds like the space ship flying through space.

So if you don’t care about trying to recreate a theater in your living room and just want to play music and maybe listen to your TV with your stereo rather than your built in speakers then get a 2 channel reciever (I’m guessing you also have a headphone jack on your TV somewhere or bluetooth output).

You want all that stuff then look for a surround sound receiver, but it sounds like it will need an HDMI input.

Now if you just want a turntable and some speakers you could also get a turntable with a preamp and a set of these

Once you have figured out what you want be sure to also check out shopgoodwill.com. In the past year I have purchased 5 receivers from them and a subwoofer. Just make sure you double check shipping before you bid on anything.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Us old guys grew up with this stuff. There is at least an entire generation that only listened to music from a phone to earbuds or a bluetooth speaker. It is complicated, but a lot of fun.

My record player is a Crosley, this one to be exact

It says it’s been discontinued, so I’m not sure where to buy one just like it. There’s plenty of other decent options I’m sure, but I’m no expert. It also really depends on how much you’re willing to spend, and if you already have speakers that would be compatible with it. One of heard good things about is the Audio Technica AT-LP60, but it doesn’t come with speakers.

The speakers I use are Edifier R1280Ts and they’re pretty nice

Instead of looking for “Bluetooth speaker” look for a stereo and double check that it has bluetooth (they pretty much all do) or look for a multiroom speaker.

The Edifier R1280Ts get a lot of love around here – $99 on Amazon

There’s also the R1700BTs (bluetooth capable) – $150

I’ve also heard good things about the Micca PB42X – $120 on sale on Amazon

If you have a bit of wiggle room on the high end, the Audioengine 2+ are really nice at $250 and are probably what I’d look at in that range if I was after a pair of powered bookshelves for myself

Just a note, if you get bookshelf speakers, do not place them on the same surface as your tunrtable (either get a pair of stands or place on separate shelving/surface)

He’s saying not to necessarily buy in the next couple of days because proper research and understanding what you are buying will delineate between you regretfully spending $50 on garbage or being happy with your purchase. Regarding your amplifier question, every speaker needs an amplifier, bar none. However, some speakers are powered and have the amplifier built-in (see the Edifier RT1280), while some speakers are passive and need an external amplifier (See the Dayton B452). For that budget, I think the best you could do new is this, however, buying used is also an effective route. If you could up your budget a tad or save a little longer, this is a decent powered option that is a bit more simple to setup.

I have a friend in high school with a minimal budget, I have an old Sony that just need a new needle, but it doesn’t have a built in preamp. As far as I can tell all they need is speakers like these speakers and a preamp like this preamp

Is there anything I’m obviously missing? I understand that this is about as cheap as you can get new, but I don’t wanna hunt used for them and they don’t wanna do the research to shop used themselves so here we are. Thanks for any advice!

Hello, just hijacking this comment to state that I used a pair of Edifers with my Schiit stack (Modi/Magni/Loki) for a bit until I switched the speakers over to my turntable. They worked wonderfully, and I felt they were quite good for the price.

These are what I have:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B016P9HJIA?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

I went back to my Bose speakers I got from Best Buy even those they can’t be hooked up my stack because the Edifers sound so good I wanted them dedicated for my turntable, since I primarily listen to music through headphones when I am using my computer.

However, I put this set on my list to replace the Bose speakers:

You will need speakers or headphones and amplification. The AT-LP120X has a built in “phono pre-amp” that gets connected to a stereo system or powered speakers.

Lowest budget decent speaker options are 6-1/2&quot; 2-Way Bookshelf Speaker Pair and Hi-Fi Mini Amplifier Bundle $50 or Edifier R1280T powered speakers $100. Edifier R1280DB $130 adds bluetooth and digital optical input. The Edifiers also have a 2nd analog input for a TV, computer, or Alexa Echo Dot or Input.

Other options:

Stereo receiver ONKYOTX-8220 or a AV receiver if also using with a TV DENONAVR-S540BT.

Low budget speakers, besides many other options:

Home Audio Guides: Intro to home stereo systemsZeos Tutorials, Diagrams and VideosGuide to Home AudioAverageJoeAudiophile’s Guides

Also check out r/BudgetAudiophile.

If you can have a larger turntable budget, check out Fluance RT82 Reference Turntable with the new optical sensor speed controlled motor (Skip the RT80 and RT81 without the optical speed controlled motors, I would take the AT-LP120X over those). However you will need an external phono pre-amp if not getting a receiver with phono in. Cheap ones are $20 to $50, a good starter worth buying and keeping is $100.

And of course used turntables can be a great value, vintage 70s direct drive for example.

100 bucks for really quite nice sounding powered speakers. You can go for the dac/BT version if you want, but that’s another 50, which you don’t need to spend really. I added an external DAC (coz most PC DACs are pants) but you don’t need to

The Echo Dot has a 3.5mm output, not input. The tiny speaker would be a bit sound quality bottleneck for the turntable anyways.

Connect both the turntable and the Echo Dot to a pair of powered speakers or an amp or receiver with passive speakers.

Compact 4″ mid bass driver speakers for a smallish size room or desktop setup:

  • 4″ Edifier R1280T $99 has RCA inputs for both the turntable and Echo Dot.

Larger 6.5″ passive speakers and a mini amp:

  • Dayton Audio B652 $45 passive speakers powered by a Pyle PDA20BT $45 mini amp with Bluetooth. Connect the turntable to the RCA input and connect the Echo Dot over Bluetooth.

Or for the best value what is a Craigslist or nearby zip code to search for used options?

There are TWO Versions of the Edifier R1280. One simply has Two PAIR of analog RCA imputs. The other version has Bluetooth Receiver Capability and has the same two pair of Analog In, plus Optical and Coaxial Inputs.

The basic version is the Edifier R1280T – $99/pr

https://www.amazon.com/Edifier-R1280T-Powered-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B016P9HJIA/

The Digital Version is the Edifier R1280DB – $149/pr

https://www.amazon.com/Edifier-R1280DBs-Bluetooth-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B08865JM4N/

If that is the limit of your money, it should be fine.

You connect both Left and Right from the Scarlett interface to the left/right on the main speaker. Then you connect the Second Speaker to the Main Speaker using common Speaker Wire of whatever length you need.

Both the “T” and “DB” version also come with a remote control.

With the Bluetooth Version, you can be sitting away from the Speaker and Stream Music or general Audio from your Smart Phone or Tablet to the speakers. That might be of value to some people.

If you have no need for the extra features of the 1280DB, the basic R1280T will do just fine.

Yeah tbh if you can afford it i would look for a used cheap reciever or TT on offer up. Than just buy new speakers. Figure out if you want powered speakers or Passive that will determine if you even need a receiver. The used speaker market was overwhelming to me.

This my setup

Vintage Dual 506 ( 150-200$)
Jamo passive bookshelf speakers 4X {s 803} ($200)
Used Dennon reciever (Avr 3805) ($100)

Honestly u could skip the work/ learning process about gear just get these things new as well

Flunace 82 Turntable with eliptical stylus ready to go (no phono stage)
https://www.fluance.com/rt81-high-fidelity-vinyl-turntable-record-player-with-premium-cartridge-diamond-needle

Instead of a reciever buy a DAC (amplifier)

Decent Powered bookshelf speaker

Or you could get a Fluance 81 with a (conical stylus not as good as eliptical) that has a phono preamp built in and you dont need a dac just powered speakers

First off, thank you for putting in the time & effort to not just find the hardware but type all this up! I appreciate it.

> Edifier S350DB 2.1 Speaker System Bluetooth v4.1 aptX Wireless Sound – $350/set

That is a big pile of money, but I see the value, for sure! I’ve had this shitty set of Logitech speakers for well over a decade, knowing they’re garbage, but they still worked for what I needed so I haven’t bothered to upgrade. I’m sure I could get at least that long out of a much better setup.

> Are the Computer and the PS4 located in the same location? That is, are they both on your computer desktop or are they in different locations in the room?

They’re both on the desk

> And how far do you want to take this?

Sky’s the limit! I work in audio, I’ve got no excuse for this shit.

> or are you just using the TV Speakers?

Yeaaaaahhhh

The Edifier S350BD seems like a great main setup system, and lately my “main” spot has been my office. So that might end up a PC/console system, while the TV keeps its internals for now.

> Myself I would rather have a good Stereo system than a so-so 5.1 surround system

Agreed! I got these speakers back when the only in-home surround sound I’d experienced was at my rich uncle’s house, and I was just jazzed for the novelty.

I appreciate the “functional but marginal” solution, but yeah, I’m just gonna work towards replacing what I’ve got. No sense propping up a piece of shit.

> Edifier R1280DBs Active Bluetooth Bookshelf Speakers – Optical Input – $150/pair

Heyyyyy, I’ve got almost these exact same speakers for my turntable! I’ve got the R1280Ts, I think the only difference is no bluetooth. I’d thought about using them in here temporarily (kinda quarantined to my office atm), but I’m not sure I’ve still got the 3.5mm adapter it came with.

> Again, without spending money, I’m not seeing a good solution.

And so, money will be spent! A PVC recording booth is in my more immediate future, but this will be really nice to finally get up to speed with the rest of… everything.

Thanks again!

The Fluance has a built in preamp so technically all you need is a pair of powered speakers to listen to it. https://www.amazon.com/Edifier-R1280T-Powered-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B016P9HJIA These are good bang for the buck.

However if you want to listen to more than a turntable, radio, CD, computer etc or have it be part of a home theatre setup, then things get more complicated and more expensive. What is your end goal here?

Anything Edifier, honestly even the 2 channel setup will be significantly better than cheap soundbars. I have these in several rooms and they sound good. I have one set of the 2.1 for my kitchen and it’s really nice too.

For reference, I’ve spent way too much on audio (Paradigms). If you want to go down that path, CL/marketplace have lots of good used options that are reasonable. You just need an amp and some speakers to get started.

Any powered Edifier speakers will make you very happy compared to what you have now. The R1280T at $100 can’t really be beat. A step up from there is the R1280Ts at $120 which has a subwoofer out port for future upgradability.

Seeing as your turntable has a built-in preamp, regardless of its quality, I would start hitting thrift stores in search of a cheap used amplifier or receiver, preferably a 2-channel unit and not a home theatre receiver.

If you’re only looking for an amplifier to use with the turntable and no other purposes like a CD player or tuner and want to spend a bare minimum of money for new equipment, I would start with something like a cheap D-class amplifier like this: https://www.parts-express.com/Lepai-LP-2020TI-Digital-Hi-Fi-Audio-Mini-Amplifier-with-Power-Supply-310-3000

For speakers, this might be your cheapest new option that isn’t of dubious quality: https://www.parts-express.com/Dayton-Audio-B652-6-1-2-2-Way-Bookshelf-Speaker-Pair-300-652

For a few dollars more and the most compact all-in-one solution, maybe consider a pair of Edifier powered bookshelf speakers: https://www.amazon.com/Edifier-R1280T-Powered-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B016P9HJIA/

Hope this helps in some small way.

Dang I also thought about how sick it would be to have a Chinese or Japanese themed setup. There’s so many pieces that would go with it.

I think if you got a bookshelf speaker in a woodgrain finish like this, it would really tie it together. Other ideas would be a fake bonsai tree or something. Some Japanese scroll art going vertically framing out the two sides. They got stuff like this or this that I think would go perfectly here. Maybe PC with RGB that glows like a lantern lol. But overall, good stuff.

Edifier R1280T
These are self-amplified speakers they’ll plug into your 3.5mm headphone jack and away you go. I’ve got a pair and they’re pretty nice. $100+tax

Edifier R980T
Similar powered speakers, just more budget-oriented at $75+tax. I haven’t heard these myself but I like my 1280s and 1700s enough that I’d look at these if I needed a cheaper set.

R1700BT would be my splurge pick, but maybe not at their regular price of $160. They’re what I’ve got, they’re like the 1280 set but more, with bigger cabinets, slightly bigger sound, and more bass. I got mine for like $130 on sale. Speaking of which, if you watch edifier.com they have decent sales pretty frequently. They might start a labor day sale this weekend, so keep an eye on that.

Whatever you get, if you have issues with it rattling your desk, consider getting some foam pad stands for them. I’ve got these ones and they work nicely under my 1700s.

My local record store often has a combo for newer listeners that come in.

The standard setup includes a turntable with built-in pre-amp and powered speakers. Affordable and doesn’t take much space. Here’s what it includes:

https://www.audio-technica.com/en-us/at-lp60

https://www.amazon.com/Edifier-R1280T-Powered-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B016P9HJIA/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&amp;keywords=powered+speakers&amp;qid=1617555393&amp;sr=8-3

We do not recommend the above turntable as it doesn’t have good tracking force or a counterweight though (but is within your price range and pretty standard). If you want to follow all suggestions by us, the standard turntable most people suggest that is direct drive is and the same reliable company: https://www.audio-technica.com/en-us/at-lp120-usb . This table is often on sale or can be found used.

See our sidebar for more recommendations and things though as it may be helpful to have a more ‘split up’ setup. That would include Turntable, External Pre-amp, Amp or Receiver, and Passive Speakers.

these will do just fine and sound detailed and full for the price

typically what you want to do is put the turntable on a separate piece of furniture away from the speakers – this isolates the turntable and helps prevent skips and resonance if you play loud

one final note, put the speakers where the small drivers (the tweeters) are at eye level with your head – make sure to sit between them in an equilateral triangle for the best stereo imaging (how “3D” and immersive the music sounds relies upon this)

They will give you a bigger sound, and you don’t need portability anyways.

Vinyl enthusiast here, what you need are active speakers designed for your specific set up. Forget using the computer speakers and purchase something like these Edifier R1280T active speakers. They are budget speakers, but they would work well with your budget turntable and still give you that vinyl sound you’re looking for. Sell your computer speakers on FB or CL to help pay for these.

Not to crap on OP, but I would suggest those interested in these to have a listen. In my opinion the R1280T‘s sound much better for just a little more money. You may also opt for the R1280DB for added Bluetooth and sub out capability.

It really comes down to what you want to get out of it, and that really comes down to the individual person.

For my son (who’s about your age), we found a used Technics P-mount for $20, a vintage Radio Shack mini receiver and a pair of pretty decent used bookshelf speakers from Goodwill. Less than $100 it all and he’s very happy with it.

But that takes time and effort to find all that stuff used, and I can’t blame people for not having the time.

So, all that said, here’s what I’d suggest for a new setup:

$100 turntable from Target: https://www.target.com/p/heyday-153-turntable-gray/-/A-53734379

$100 powered speakers from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Edifier-R1280T-Powered-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B016P9HJIA

Now, I don’t think you’ll be blown away by that, but it should work, and give you time to really decide how much you want to commit to this hobby.

Then, when you’re 16 and get a part time job, you can consider upgrading to a better system at that point.

If you’re going to purchase at a local store, is there any way you can go in and listen?

I took a look at your other replies, and it seems like you want a music setup to fill your room. Unfortunately, music is only two channel, meaning it will only come out of the front two speakers. Even if you had the surrounds and the center, no music would play from there.

I think it might be worth a shot to get a pair of edifiers and see if they do what you want. If not, you can return them to Amazon (I think. Not sure how it works there)

If that doesn’t work, what you’ll have to do is get two pairs of speakers and hook them up to the same amplifier.

So, order this twice. That will give you two pairs of speakers.

Get this amplifier. You can hook two of the speakers to the left channel and the other two to the right channel.

Get maybe 100 feet of speaker wire to hook them up and maybe some wire strippers and you’ll be good to go.

Stereo Pair/Sub is an absolute waste of money unless you pretty much only use amazon music.

Can’t use it with Bluetooth, can’t use most 3rd parties, I considered it but meh after all the issues I read on it I decided against it.

Not only will this setup work with everything including bluetooth it will absolutely destroy the sound quality of Echo’s and the Sub for about $250

At the bare minimum include the following things if you want help and/or advice choosing or setting up amplifiers, speakers, DACS, etc

  • Budget: 100 u$s
  • Country: Argentina. If the product cost more than 50$, I have to pay 50% of the excedent as taxes
  • I can buy from: Any amazon, b&h, I think almost everywhere
  • Use: Audioslave, RHCP, Rock in general, series,
  • Where: A desk in a Room
  • Space: 3.67m x 3.88m, NOT really loud, I will be most of the time 1.5m away from the speakers and occasionally on my bed, or taking a bath or cooking in the next room.

Optional but also helpful

  • Powered, passive, or no preference: no preference, I’ve heard you can get a better quality with the same budget with passive speakers.
  • Any size limitations for either speaker or amp: no
  • To upgrade later?: not really
  • Pref certain way of sounding (Bright/forward, smooth/laid back, neutral, etc): that immersive experience (everyone here would call it the commercial one?) but I’m not sure, I don’t have any speaker to listen and compare.., I only have a HyperX Cloud 1 headsets and I won’t be downloading FLAC at least for the moment, I only listen from Spotify (music) or Bluray (series and movies) most part of the time

I’ve made my search but I have no idea about this so… I need speakers for the pc on the desk in my room. Mostly for series, music, games. I will not update the system soon after this purchase and I don’t have anything right now besides my current headphones.

I’m from Argentina so I have 2 disadvantages: I have absolutely no idea what I’m buying because there are no places near me to try any of these speakers. For every purchase, if I spend more than 50$ I will have to pay 50% of the excedent. That means, I can buy an amp of 30$ without paying taxes or if it exists the possibility to buy a pair of headphones by separate (1 and 1 making a pair) I will probably not pay taxes… Are there places willing to do that?

This is my room: https://imgur.com/a6UVKYU

Questions:

– What would you recommend and why?

– My motherboard doesn’t have bluetooth. I want to connect my pc the 99% of the time and maybe my phone 4-5mts away. What is my best option?

– I think I can buy from any amazon. I’ve found better prices for some of the products there. Editing..

Active:

Edifier R1280T 156$ – £89.99

Edifier R980T 115$ – £59.99

Swan Speakers – D1010-IVB (unavailable? the 2nd best option?)

Passive:

Micca PB42 60$

Micca PB42X 110$

Pioneer SP-BS22-LR 93$ (the best ones? 1st best option?)

Dayton Audio B652 28$

Dayton Audio B652-AIR 45$

Amp:

Lepy LP-2020A Class-D 23$ (I want to connect my phone occasionally without disconnecting my pc, should I get a bluetooth or wifi amp?)

&#x200B;

ps: sorry for the long post and thanks in advance

You can get some decent speakers pretty cheap, depending on how you define cheap –

These are cheap enough for good speakers with Bluetooth –

https://www.amazon.com/Edifier-R1280T-Powered-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B016P9HJIA/

If you want the same thing with an Opt/Coax DAC, then $30 more.

But if you are serious about speakers, then we could consider these at about $250 –

If you’re really going to get into vinyl I suggest upgrading to a turntable like this one . Crosley’s can damage records because the stylus they have installed is really bad quality and will not sound very good

But for some small but loud budget friendly speakers that don’t require an amp I’d go with these

1 point

·

27th Aug 2020

Separates are going to be hard to get for good quality under $250, so let’s focus on your good powered speakers that will just work for you.

First things first: what turntable are you getting? If it has a “built in phono preamp” then you’re all set. It will usually say if it does, and often will have a switch somewhere that switches the output between “Line” and “Phono.” If it does not have that, you’ll need a separate “phono preamp” to bring the turntable signal up to normal levels (basically turntable signals are really soft, so they need extra amplification).

If you’re good there, then speakers. Powered speakers just work, and you can just plug in and go. That’s what I would recommend. Here are some options.

The Edifier 1280T ($99): https://www.amazon.com/Edifier-R1280T-Powered-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B016P9HJIA/ (they also make a version with bluetooth for $50 more). Not bad, I’ve got ’em in my kitchen and they’re clear and easy on the ears. You can also add a subwoofer for extra bass pretty easily, they have a line out for it (like this very affordable one: https://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-108248-60-Watt-Powered-Subwoofer/dp/B009GUTJ34 – or this Elac – https://www.amazon.com/Elac-SUB1010-Powered-Subwoofer-SUB1010-BK/dp/B07WHTXFWV – but just search “powered subwoofer” and choose your budget, there are a bunch)

The next step up in powered speakers is going to be $200-300ish. Here’s one that’s on sale that would be very nice: https://www.amazon.com/Kanto-Powered-Speakers-Bluetooth-Preamp/dp/B074R5ZF7K (built in phono preamp on that one if your turntable requires it, could be a good all-in-one option).

These might be a great option as well if you do want more bass—their larger 6.5″ woofer will deliver. https://www.amazon.com/Fluance-Performance-Bookshelf-Amplifier-Turntable/dp/B07MH2X3CP (may want to look at other sellers as they seem short on stock)

1 point

·

24th Aug 2020

You are looking for a “great” setup that has “nice rich bass,” but it needs to fit in a 23″ x 8″ space AND cost less than $100? You can’t have either of those things with either of those restrictions.

You might be able to get some powered bookshelf speakers that meet your restrictions. They’d be a little better than the built-in TV speakers, but that’s about it. Something like this, then put them in that cavity sideways, with the tweeters towards the outside. https://www.amazon.com/Edifier-R1280T-Powered-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B016P9HJIA/ref=sr_1_3?crid=25PK6DHDMAB3Q&amp;dchild=1&amp;keywords=powered+speakers

There’s a lot more options if you’d be willing to compromise on both the placement and the budget restrictions.

>Why do I need a DJPre II?
>
>The basic Orbit has a phono, although you need to pay for the preamp. My understanding is the preamp is only needed for large speaker setups but I could be wrong

What is a Phono Preamp? | Audio Advice

You need a PHONO STAGE somewhere in your setup. In the turntable, an external phono preamp, or in a receiver, integrated amp or stereo preamp, or a few powered speakers have one.

A receiver with a built in phono preamp will have an input labeled PHONO.

You can add an internal Pluto phono preamp to the Orbit for $70 USD or buy an external Pluto for $90 USD or get the DJPre II for less than the cost of the internal Pluto. I recommend external when you have the choice. External is preferred for electronic isolation and most all higher than entry level turntables don’t have internal. Also if you ever upgrade you can sell the external or use it in another setup.

&#x200B;

>My current plan is getting Orbit + QUP + Receiver + speakers
>
>Orbit 230+$40 QUP (amazon) + 150 speaker + $100 receiver = 500-600

Which models receiver and speakers? Consider spending more on the turntable and less on the speakers and amplification. Speakers are easier to upgrade later.

I highly recommend reconsidering the QUP. It is a crutch or band aid solution for someone who already has a turntable and does not want to buy a new turntable just to get auto stop and just needs it once in a while, for example falling asleep to a record. You are buying a new turntable so you have the opportunity to buy a turntable with auto stop built in. Also I highly recommend a cue lever which is standard on almost any other turntable but U-turn charges extra for and it can’t be used with the QUP.

  • U-Turn Basic $235 CAD plus QUP $59 CAD amazon.ca = $295 CAD does not have a cue lever.
  • RT82 = $400 CAD includes built in automatic auto stop and a cue lever.

I still highly recommend the Canadian Fluance RT82. For $110 CAD more you are getting a much better turntable, the cue lever is included, a $50 better cartridge/stylus and a fully automatic auto stop system that you don’t need to reset every time you want to use it. The motor just stops when the tonearm reaches the end of the record. The QUP leaves the motor running on the Orbit.

If you can’t get the RT82, or I can’t help you find a system to go with it to stay in budget, or you can’t add some of your own funds to get it or just buy the speakers yourself, then I recommend getting the Fluance RT80 or RT81 instead of the Orbit. They are a step down in specs from the RT82, however they do have auto stop built in, the cue lever is included standard no charge and works great with the cue lever, and they have a basic built in phono preamp if not getting a receiver with one built in, or using powered speakers that you connect directly to the turntable, no external phono preamp needed.

RT80 is $269 CAD or the RT81 is $335 CAD.

Or if you can ship it to Canada, the Monolith by Monoprice Turntable with Audio-Technica AT100E $199 USD is a clone of the RT81 from the same factory for $50 USD less than the RT81.

&#x200B;

>Are powered speakers worth it? are they less quality than the combo of receiver/speakers

If spending the same price on a setup, passive with receiver or powered are about the same quality. I prefer passive with receiver because you can later upgrade one part at a time, usually for s speaker upgrade and the you can get a receive with a built in phono preamp so you don’t have to buy a separate one. You can always upgrade to a better external one later.

&#x200B;

I am happy to answer any more questions you may have to help you get a good setup.

Which model turntable? You may need a phono stage/preamp too.

For around $100, Edifier R1280T $100 home audio powered bookshelf speakers with a remote and 2 inputs. Edifier 1280BD $130 adds bluetooth and digital optical inputs.

Or go for separate components and you can later upgrade one part at a time, $50 6-1/2&quot; 2-Way Bookshelf Speaker Pair and Hi-Fi Mini Amplifier Bundle.

Or a better SMSL SA36A $52 with Dayton Audio B652-AIR 6-1/2&quot; with AMT Tweeter Pair $50

Or look for a better used stereo or AV receiver and a pair of used bookshelf speakers.

Pick your poison……and those Pioneers arent worth it.

Edifier R1280T – The go to for $100

Presonus Eris 3.5 – Well balanced monitors

Micca ON3 – DSP controlled and small

Edifier E10 – Quirky but cool and very small

Rockville HD5 – Bigger, deeper bass

Grab some cheap powered speakers for $100 if you need, the speakers built into the TV are beyond terrible.

Planning on buying my first turntable setup and wanted to get some feedback on it. Total budget is about $500, but I can probably spend a little more if I need to. I was also wondering if there’s anything else I need to get, like tools to help setting it up? I’d prefer to get everything new, there’s not really a used market where I’m at.

Turntable: U-Turn Custom, with cue lever, Ortofon OM 5E cartridge

Phono Preamp: Art DJPre II

Speakers: Edifier R1280T Active Speakers

Anti Static Record Brush

Accessories:

Mobile Fidelity Inner Sleeves

Also, how much of an upgrade would it be to spend a little more and get an Audio Technica LP120, over the U-Turn? I like the design of it more, but I’m not sure if it would be worth the price bump?

For exactly $75 I’m not sure if you can get any better powered speakers, however I would strongly look at getting passive speakers and an amp. This way, if you decide to upgrade in the future or if you need a subwoofer, it’s a lot easier.

However, if you need powered speakers, these edifiers are extremely popular, and just a bit more money.

Also, if the Micca ON3 comes back in stock, those were $70 if I recall correctly.

>Most people who hate one Bose haven’t even heard them personally.

I’ll do you one better. I owned the Companion 2 Series 2 a while back. Yes, they do sound bad. My Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 set absolutely destroys them. That’s a bit above your price range and a 2.1, so I’d probably go for these Edifiers. At least they’re a two way design, so the highs should be much better.

With $300, I will try and suggest a setup that will be an easy, no frills setup for casual listening.

You could get the Pro-Ject Debut III (a predecessor of the Debut Carbon) for a cool $200 thanks to a BF sale that Music Direct is running.

Next, I highly recommend this pair of bookshelf speakers available on Amazon for $99.

You’ll need to shell out a couple bucks for a preamp to get sound from the turntable to the speakers, but you can get great sound out of an affordable preamp like the Pyle Pro PP999 for less than $15.

Best of luck finding a setup that suits your needs!

Neither the MB42 nor the MB42X have a built in amp, you will need an amp to power them and the PB42X (P for Powered) don’t have a remote so they are best for computer/desktop instead of whole room listening. Hence clipperdouglas29 recommended the Edifier 1280.

If you want something that will sound decent, get the better Edifier powered bookshelf speakers like the R1280T which you can add a subwoofer too later with a Y cable. Or get a mini amp and passive bookshelf speakers.

There is no such thing as “decent” sound bar, unless you’re one of those people who’s blown away by Bose. For the same money you can buy actual good bookshelf speakers that will sound far better and you can take with you for decades. Sound bars are disposable.

Example: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B016P9HJIA/

You need 4 components:

turntable -> phono preamp -> amp/receiver -> speakers

So your turntable covers the first two since it has a preamp built-in. Some powered bookshelf speakers like these $100 Edifiers would cover the last two components.

It doesn’t replace a preamp, in my setup. Most vintage receivers, and some new receivers have a “phono” input, which means that is a preamp. I don’t use the photo input because the Pluto preamp is better IMO.

The receiver allows me to use “passive” speakers, meaning they don’t have any power go to them. When you have the power, and speakers all in the same package for $100 the quality of all the components isn’t great.

So in short, a receiver can tune FM and AM radio, amplifies the signal, has many inputs, many outputs, and the ability to have more than one pair of speakers.

This amp isn’t considered very powerful (20W/C) however on volume 2/10 it’s equal to my Edifier speakers turned up nearly all the way.

I think your best bet is to use Chromecast Audios (CCA), as some others have recommended.

We bought our first CCA right when they came out, and we hooked it up to a pair of speakers in the kitchen. We quickly bought two more, eventually adding two Google Homes (which can also participate in speaker groups with CCAs), bringing us to five speakers spread throughout our apartment. So we’ve been using our Chromecast Audios for well over two years, now, and I can’t make any significant complaints.

The synced multiroom audio works great, and the Google Home app lets you adjust the volume collectively (if there’s a quieter song or album) as well as on each individual speaker. You can create multiple groups of speakers, and each speaker can be in as many groups as you like, so you could have, for example, All Speakers, Upstairs Speakers, and Downstairs Speakers if you wanted. You can cast separate audio to separate speakers, and even cast separate audio to separate speaker groups if you want. We regularly use our setup to put on music in the living room and kitchen when we have company, as well as to play podcasts in the whole apartment when we’re doing chores in separate rooms or while moving room to room.

A big thing that I like about the CCA versus smart speakers is that it’s easy to upgrade my sound quality without having to re-buy a whole speaker. When we got them, we were able to use them with whatever speakers we already had, basically getting a bunch of smart speakers for $35 a pop (or less if there’s a sale on). Then, when one of the inputs on my (ancient, but still good-sounding) Altec Lansing computer speakers started to go bad, I got a nice new set of speakers for my computer and moved the old Altec Lansings to the bedroom, replacing a cheaper, lower-quality speaker set that also had only one input.

As far as quality goes, I’m wouldn’t call myself an “audiophile”, but I enjoy listening to music and I want good sound quality. I’ve been consistently pleased with the Chromecast Audio. Hooked up to a good quality set of speakers like my Edifier R1280T* that I have on my computer, the CCA sounds great. If you have (or acquire in the future) an analog HiFi stereo system, the CCA also offers the option of outputting full dynamic range audio. It also has optical output built into the stereo minijack, so you can hook it up to a newer A/V receiver that takes digital optical input, like equipment you might have as part of a surround sound system.

If you want to start with a sound bar, there are a number of manufacturers who actually ship speakers and soundbars that have Chromecast Audio functionality built-in. They will operate just like a regular speaker with a CCA attached to it. You can cast to them individually, add them to speaker groups or control them with a Google Home. Of course, you could also buy a soundbar without that feature and just hook a CCA into one of its inputs (most have multiple inputs, as far as I know).

Sorry if that got kind of long, but I wanted to answer all your separate questions and be fairly thorough.

* These aren’t super cheap speakers, but I’d give them a very good recommendation for a speaker with excellent sound quality at a non budget-breaking price. I also think they look good in a variety of different rooms and decor styles. There’s another model, basically identical, but with more input options that I’m planning to buy to replace our aging Philips stereo system for our living room TV.

Hi all,

I recently got a Sony PS-T3 turntable from my Aunt’s basement and I got a set of Edifier active speakers ( https://www.amazon.com/Edifier-R1280T-Powered-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B016P9HJIA/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1516128831&amp;sr=8-1-spons&amp;keywords=powered+speakers&amp;psc=1 ). Plugging in the turntable into the speakers, the sound is barely audible. Soooo I bought the cheapest preamp that money can buy (https://www.amazon.com/Pyle-Phono-Turntable-Preamp-Preamplifier/dp/B00025742A/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1516128916&amp;sr=1-3&amp;keywords=phono+preamp) and the audio now has an extremely loud buzzing that makes the music impossible to hear. At home, I have a proper Sony amp with some Bose bookshelf speakers, but I am at Uni and space is very limited, hence the cheap preamp and smallish speakers. Any suggestions are appreciated!

However, I’m a bit daft on receiver compatibility and what a preamp is and if I need one.

Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

I’m too lazy for craigslist and I’m afraid I’ll get something I won’t know how to fix if it’s broken so I just want some new equipment that will work. I think I’m gonna go for these Edifier Speakers. I absolutely love the gift she gave me and already have a few vinyls of some of my fav albums. My question to you guys is this, I did some research and read up that this record player cant support external speakers. One of my buddies told me there might be a way. I just wanted some more advice/opinions before I went about with this set up. I was going to purchase the Edifier R1280T Powered Bookshelf Speakers, a 3.5mm to 2RCA Male to Male Aux Audio Cable Cord 3.5mm Stereo Jack to 2 x RCA Phono Plugs Connector for Speakers, and a Pyle-Pro PP444 Ultra Compact Phono Turntable Preamp. i wanted to know if using these pieces would allow me to actually get the speakers to work with my record player. If this device has audio out, I’d rather get it than more Google Homes. They’re good for where we have them, but I’m not always completely satisfied with the sound quality. I think the speaker and drivers are all pretty good, but the bass levels are much too high for my tastes.

Voices tend to boom a bit too much on podcasts, and when you turn the volume down below 30% on a lot of the music I listen to, such as I might do at night, the treble starts to get lost and the bass is still thumpier than I’d like. A big feature that I’d like for the Home would be the option to adjust the bass and treble levels, like you can on most self-contained speakers.

Regardless, I’d be much happier bringing my own speakers to the game, especially in rooms where I already have good speakers. And even if I we had more rooms than we currently do, and I wanted to add a Home to a new room, I think that I’d rather spend $100 on another pair of these speakers and $50 on a Home mini than to buy another full-sized Home at $130. I think the $20 difference would be worth it, and I think that would be true for me even up to the whole (rumored) $50 cost of the new Home Mini.

Again, I’m not really dissatisfied with the Homes, and I’ve enjoyed them a lot (which is why we have two!), but I’d rather have more control over the speakers.

Vibrating the desk isn’t a good reference, most speakers especially the ones with a subwoofer can do that.

The Micca features a “4-inch carbon fiber woofer to enhance the bass”, it’s the selling point.

Most adapters support 100-240V and can be used worldwide but if for some reason the 18V/2A power adapter is limited to 110V input, here’s an alternative: <strong>Edifier R1280T</strong>. It supports 100-240V directly, the power adapter is integrated inside the speakers.

Alternative 2: Micca MB42X(no integrated amplifier) + SMSL SA50 amplifier or any equivalent that supports 100-240V.

So, yes, you need those. However, for $100, you can consider powered speakers, which are speakers with a built-in amp.

Never heard it before, I’m going off of his recommendation. If you can find a place to listen to them that’d be good, and if you can find a store with a good return policy that would take them back if you don’t like them, that’d be the best.

> I don’t need a very expensive setup.

Which is why I recommended something $50 less than your budget. Small computer speakers sacrifice SQ for the form factor, I’m giving you the best option I know of that would work for you. If you’re cool with going with just two bookshelf speakers, try Edifier Bass / Treble knobs on the side and I’m told their decent for the price.

It’s crazy that it’s a tower that only goes down to 85hz. Almost any modern bookshelf speaker will deliver deeper, more powerful bass.

You’re better off with these:

Or, if you need bluetooth, these:

I’m looking at buying this turntable and these speakers

From looking at the guides on here I think this is all I need for a basic, beginner set-up. Am I right or is there more equipment I will need? I plan on upgrading speakers in the future but just want to get the ball rolling.

I think I’ll be going with the Edifier R1280T then with the JBL’s down the road! Thanks for your input!

Although $15 more, consider the powered Edifier 1280T. These bookshelf sound great for the price point, are housed in a solid wood enclosure, have multiple audio inputs (including the 1/8-inch), remote for input switching and audio control, a 2 year warranty, and arrive with all the cables needed. It’s currently the best selling bookshelf speaker on Amazon. Here’s a YouTube review.

If you wish to save more, I also have another CCA connected to an ONEU Mini Amp that I’ve connected to a pair of used AR tower speakers that I scored buying from Goodwill for $20.

I don’t really have a budget. I just want good quality, good price. I wanted to get these powered speakers and this preamp. Bonus question, would it be better to get that preamp or to get the Basic with built in preamp? If I get an external one, I can upgrade in the future but how is the preamp important enough to do so?

The speakers I have will only work with speaker wire. There is nothing else on the back except for red and black knobs to screw in the wire.

edit: I think I am going to buy THESE. Will that solve my problem?

the Z623 should sound fine but not audiophile grade by any mean, and the z623 better than the z506 they are way more powerful.
if bluetooth not really important for you you can get something like this or this then you can get chromcast audio and use it with them.
sidenote: bookshelf speakers wont really have much bass btw.

Just purchased a Pioneer PL-115d Off of craigslist for a pretty fair price, Now I am looking into my setup. I know I need a Pre-amp, but I was looking into these speakers which appear to have an AMP in them. What do you guys think would this be a good setup and what pre-amps do you suggest.

Also I might get a receiver from a friend, would that mess with things down the road?

Not sure how much you’re looking to spend, but have a look at “powered bookshelf speakers”. The amplifier will be integrated into one of the speakers, you connect this one directly to your computer via RCA or 3.5mm. Some will even have an integrated DAC with USB and/or bluetooth connectivity. The second speaker is connected with regular speaker wire to the amplifier in the first speaker.

Thanks for the answer and suggestion. But I haven’t really the space or desire for a subwoofer. Is there an option you’d recommend more like bookshelf speakers, but self-powered?

Edit: the same company makes these, and I also found these.

I have these, and my high quality reproduction demands were met and exceeded. they look great, too. they are not as big as picture indicates, but you would need to get rid of that tower on your desk first.

If you don’t already have speakers, look at these

Edifier R1280T Powered Bookshelf Speakers – 2.0 Active Near Field Monitors – Studio Monitor Speaker – Wooden Enclosure – 42 Watts RMS https://www.amazon.com/dp/B016P9HJIA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_ssiZCb4SP3BD3

I don’t have them, but plan on getting them for my audiotechna lp120 when I get it. I have heard great things about them on amazon and by people in this subreddit.

This is just wrong.

Buy a pair of MB42X or MK402X, a SMSL SA36 for $100 total, and be blown away by how much better sound quality you get for the same price.

If you just want to buy a single component just buy this for $100.

It’ll be much better than the Klipsch. I promise.

It’s just easy. Plug and play. Please stop trashing people when you don’t know what you are talking about

Edifier R1280T

never personally heard them but based on appearance and specs, as well as reviews, they’ll be significantly better than those Klipsch speakers

personally, if I had $100, I’d get Micca MB42s and a Lepy amp

my current setup I purchased used and have had zero issues, so I’d say check Kijiji if you’re willing to take a ‘risk’

Even bookshelf speakers fall under the same category as monitor speakers, they are compact and fit really well. These speakers tend to be more accurate than regular speakers. I’m not an audiophile but someone over here could give you a better explanation. They tend to cost a little more as well. eg : Edifier R1280T Bookshelf speakers.

For your budget, you are probably better off powered just to get you going. Although you may want to jump to passive speakers + receiver in the future.

Check out the sidebar for suggestions. These might be a good option for you to start with – https://www.amazon.com/dp/B016P9HJIA/

I may be a little jaded when it comes to the studio as I’ve worked in one and it really pisses me off that they call it the studio when no sound engineer in their right mind would use it as a studio monitor.

The biggest reason I recommend the Yamahas etc is because they offer amazing sound and are self powered meaning no amplifiers etc, and most look amazing even the edifiers.

A set of these with a dot running works great, they also have dual active inputs so if you wanted to you could have the dot in one input and your tv in the other and you wouldn’t have to select which one they’d both work at the same time.

nope! Im 14 about to go into HS. Glad i started young with a lot of things, guitar, skateboarding, record collecting. I am upgrading to this: https://www.amazon.com/Edifier-R1280T-Powered-Bookshelf-Speakers/dp/B016P9HJIA/ref=sr_1_3?crid=3VLDAIL3RK61F&amp;keywords=edifier+speakers&amp;qid=1554944966&amp;s=gateway&amp;sprefix=edifier%2Caps%2C133&amp;sr=8-3
and https://www.crutchfield.com/S-uEByeB5lOlt/p_057120XUSS/Audio-Technica-LP-120XUSB-Silver.html?tp=75887
Im really glad i got into this hobby, its fun to collect. Like Im pretty sure if i bought some of those records my cousin gave me, i would’ve spent well over 200 dollars tbh. I bought 3 vintage records and a poster at a local shop for 107 bucks, but two of them were originals (beatles revolver and rubber soul) and a reissue of Led zeppelin 2

For a computer, Klipsch Promedia 2.1 for $130 or with Bluetooth for $30 more.

Edifier speakers are popular here. Edifier-R1850DB have a subwoofer line out if you want to add bass later.

I think you are wrong. Just go listen to the edifies here for $100 and compare it to these 20 year old Klipsch satellite guys.

It’s great that theoretically you think it hasn’t changed, but the proof is in the listening
