I see what you did there.

I’ve been pretty satisfied with one I found on Amazon for a few years now

I had to order one off of Amazon, because I didn’t want to have to drive back and forth to the doctor’s office! The one I got is pretty good, and it was cheap (plus came with a free self-measuring tape thingie)! I just found the link: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001KXZ808/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It doesn’t do any of that body comp stuff which isn’t really reliable anyway.

You can try changing the batteries, to see if that makes a difference, but a lot of people have the same problem of their scale producing different readings depending on where they put it on the floor. I replaced my scale after 5+ years, and if you want a scale recommendation, I love this one from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/EatSmart-Precision-Digital-Bathroom-Lighted/dp/B001KXZ808/ref=lp_85968011_1_6_s_it?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1516377259&sr=1-6

Most scales have a memory and will report the same reading if it is senses minor differences. This can be annoying too, but it’s a reality. Once you are confident it is calibrated, just weigh once and move on with your day.

If you still have reservations, just order this highly recommend scale on Amazon and trash your current scale. Losing weight is enough trouble without your scale working against you.

A few common scale issues:

 1. Make sure it’s on a flat surface.
 2. Make sure it’s on a hard surface (not carpet).
 3. Make sure it has fresh batteries.
 4. Some scales require you to “zero” them out before giving an accurate reading — try tapping it with your foot or quickly stepping on and off.

If you’ve gone through all those steps and it’s still inaccurate, you can pick up a reliable scale on Amazon for ~$20. I use this one and it works pretty well!

If the battery change doesn’t work, try a new scale.

I had one for about 7 years and changing batteries did the same thing. I just bought this scale off of Amazon and it’s been great so far and fairly inexpensive:

This is the one I use. I love it. My Fitbit Aria seems to always be +/- 2 lbs or so. This scale seems to be spot on, and measures pretty close to the scale at my gym.

This is mine.

It’s highly recommended because of how consistent it is. You can step on and off the thing over and over and it’ll give you the same weight every time.

Scales that do BF% aren’t terribly accurate. Essentially, it runs a current up one leg and down the other, which means it skips your entire upper torso. If that’s where you’re carrying your fat, it’s going to under-report significantly. Hydration also strongly impacts how they read.

I’m a huge fan of the EatSmart brand on Amazon. Their customer service is unparalleled, and their bathroom scale is sleek and modern. Also, it’s quite accurate (and has a light).

It’s about $30, so I don’t know if that’s what you would consider cheap, but I thought it was a great investment. I’ve had mine for about 6 months now.

I have this one.. It is reliable, but it also seems to store your most recent weight and display it again if you’re close (half pound?). Good advice already, that trends are the most important thing to track. I’m trying to get back in the habit of weighing only once a week, same day and time. It’s tempting to keep checking, though, I admit.

I have this one. It’s decently accurate for what I want. No bells or whistles (no Bluetooth upload to my phone, no BF%, no separate profiles). I’ve had it for a few years and paid a bit more than the listing there (it’s an older model now and there have been upgrades), but it’s a good little scale and I’m happy with it.

This is the most accurate and consistent scale I’ve ever used. Even if you move it around the room it provides very similar or exact weights. Although after a year of owning it I still tend to step on twice just in case.

I LOVE my scale! I’ve had it about six years now and it still works great – only replaced the batteries once so far. It comes with a fabric tape measure as well, if you’re interested in tracking inches. It’s simple and basic, but does it well (hence the insane number of reviews on it).

I love this scale. I’ve had it since 2012 and it works great – even comes with a cloth measuring tape for tracking inches. It also has over 27,000 reviews with an average of 4 out of 5 stars, if that matters to you.

I have large tiles in my bathroom, so I just make sure the feet are all set on the same square.

Maybe get a new scale. I swear the one I have has something in it that remembers your weight and will only show that weight for a certain period of time. With other scales, I had been able to change my weight reading by shifting my weight, leaving part of my foot off the scale, going to the bathroom….etc. With the one I have now, none of that changes my weight.

This is the scale I have. $20, and works wonderfully.

Picture this. If you worked out twice a week, you would put 10lbs on your lifts. Amazing progress! But, over the course of a year, which is 52 weeks, that would mean that you added 520 lbs to each of your lifts!

Now, this may happen for deadlift, or squat. I very much doubt it, but you may be one of those .1% of the .1% who can do it. For the rest of the normal humans in the world, that rate of progress just isn’t feasible. If you are struggling to add weight every workout, then it is time to stop adding weight every workout. Try adding weight once a week, and when that gets hard, start adding weight once a month. There are a few programs in the Wiki that have these progression schemes.

Hope that helped, and good luck!

My old one of like 10yrs varied 5lbs, like it would fluctuate within seconds of stepping on and off. Not sure if you have an older scale, but I recently purchased one on Amazon that has been fantastic: https://www.amazon.com/EatSmart-Precision-Digital-Bathroom-Lighted/dp/B001KXZ808/ref=sr_1_1_s_it?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1512594774&sr=1-1&keywords=amazon+scale

Consistent, easy to use, and apparently a lot of other ppl on this subreddit own and love it as well.

My day 1 was last week. Sunday, I received my new digital scale, and that night I went out to play ice hockey like I normally do. I come home and right before bed, I weigh in at 235.8. I have a big cup of water next to my bed for when I wake up thirsty in the night and when I get up in the morning, so I probably drank about 16oz of water between going to bed and my morning weigh in. I urinated once in the middle of the night and once after waking up before my morning weigh in. My morning weigh in reads 230.8.

I’ve heard that you can lose a couple pounds in water weight overnight through sweating and exhalation, but 5lbs seems excessive. Is this just a case of my water weight being extra high from the exercise and drinking a lot of water before/during/after my hockey game that I sweat/breathed/peed out?

This might sound obvious, but make sure you’re using a reliable scale. The scale that I used for many, many years had a good +/- 3 lbs buffer from your actual weight, depending on how you’re standing, how many times you got on and off, etc… Once I got serious about my weight loss, I got this scale off Amazon that takes consistent measurements, no amount of leaning or getting on and off a dozen times changes the measurement it gives you (believe me, I’ve tried!).

Scales show trends, not weights. Only a doctor’s balance beam scale can be really trusted to be accurate. Even so, if your digital scale shows a trend of losing 3lbs, and a doctor’s scale shows 0 change…that is a truly shitty scale. If that is really what happened, buy https://www.amazon.com/EatSmart-Precision-Digital-Bathroom-Lighted/dp/B001KXZ808 <–that, I own one and while it may not be accurate (the doctor’s scale and it may show different numbers) it is precise. Meaning if it shows you as having lost 1lb, the doctor’s scale will too. I’ve tested that scale with calibrated weights. I know it’s precise, if not accurate. When it comes to home scales, precision is more valuable than accuracy.

Part of keeping a healthy weight is having a healthy mindset about food and nutrition. Don’t be scared of food. Just accept that you need to find a balance of these two things:

 1. Foods you want to eat, scheduled and portioned such that you can eat them, in quantities that are under your TDEE.
 2. Patience to stay in the state of 1 until you reach your goal weight.

That balance isn’t easy to find, but if you find it, then you’ll lose and keep the weight off forever.

edit: Note, /u/olligale, 3lbs of weight loss can be entirely due to water. I can go from 169 to 171 in a single day if I eat enough salty foods (which cause water retention in me). So…don’t ever worry about the results of a single day, worry about the trend of a week or more.

I think a digital one is necessary because dials are hard to get accurate counts from, and a decent one is good just because the weighing mechanisms can vary in quality. I’ve got this one and it’s worked faithfully so far.

I’ve had this one for a few years and it’s served me well. Because of how my floors are I have to check and make sure it’s accurate/level every time I use it, and depending on where I stand on it, it can give me a different reading. I just make sure I stand in roughly the same spot every time (although I’m thinking of making a mark on it with nail polish or something to line up with my big toes).

1 point

·

21st Jan 2017

I use this scale from Amazon and it hasn’t failed me yet. I have a feeling that your variances are happening due to the floor, but I’d say if you’re unsure, you could take something with a defined weight and weigh it the same way you weight yourself.

The 4lbs in 6 days is what we call a whoosh, and is very likely your fat loss catching up to water loss. It doesn’t necessarily have to be supported by your previous week’s calorie deficit as the water weight could have been masking the fat loss the whole time. It could also be muscle mass loss, but the point is that it’s not unheard of to have that big of a loss over that time. My whooshes used to range from 1 lb over a night all the way to a 5lb whoosh over three nights.

Daily weighing is not for the faint of heart. The fluctuations due to water weight, waste, and so many other things will cause you to go nuts if you have an obsessive personality. I started using the Happy Scale app a few months into my journey because I’m very data oriented and realized quickly that I don’t really care about the number, but rather the trends. It helped me to visualize the plateaus and adjust my strategy accordingly, but it is critical to realize that if you stick to your plan, the number on the scale is simply a number. In fact, I have always had a goal weight “range” of 5-8 lbs that I plan to stick to instead of a goal weight.

I had a fancy scale ($70) and towards the end of its life it started doing similar things. It would usually weigh me 5 lbs different but we finally threw it out after it weighed my husband 18 lbs different. We bought this one. We love it! It is always within .2 lbs.

I bought one of the most purchased ones on Amazon, purely for the good and bad reviews. Basically, if you get a lemon, the owner is very proactive in replacing it. I didn’t get one, it’s pretty damn accurate but I also make sure to weigh myself in the same location, wearing the same thing every morning and I only record my weight once a week (same day/time).

If you’ve been at it for a month since you last weighed in you’ll probably be right close to dropping below 350.

Here’s the scale I have, which I really like.

When you switch, just weigh back and forth, to see the difference. Then you can add (or subtract) the difference for all the weights before the new scale.

But even with the digital one, you might want to beware of using it on carpet. (Do your tests, like you just did, to make sure it’s the same.)

I’ve had this EatSmart Precision Scale for a few years now, and have been very happy with it. It’s very accurate and reliable. My routine is to step on and get a reading, then step off and get a weight with just one leg resting on the scale, then step back on and get another full weight reading. That way I feel confident it’s not just giving me the same number over and over without really checking, if that makes sense.

1 point

·

4th Mar 2016

This is the scale I use. I find it is accurate. If I step on holding a 1-lb dumbell, it detects that difference. However, it is n’t “easily hidden.” It is a square, glass and silver-colored scale, that works best when kept in one place, on hard, stable, even flooring.

There are travel sizes scales that you can look into, which are “miniature” and easily hidden. Be sure to read the reviews before you invest in one.

If you tend to obsess over scales, as you’ve said, you’ll be better off weighing less often, or using a trend-setting app like “HappyScale” that will calculate your fluctuations into a general trend, so that you don’t go crazy over the day-to-day changes.

If weighing yourself truly stresses you out, sets the mood for your day, or keeps you in a negative mental state, please seek the help of a mental health professional.

That is an absolutely fair statement, and I agree with you. That was my thinking as well, before. I bought a bunch of scales over the years, and I like how the one I have now provides me with one less thing I have to do each morning. (Akin to the pebble in the shoe is more annoying than the boulder on the road type thing). I like my withings because it has a clear readout, it is accurate to .1 lbs, and it’s wifi :). I bought mine off Kijiji. I still recommend the read in my other post on exponential weighted moving averages, if you are so inclined.

I’m a 5’11” male and I eat about 1800 calories a day to lose weight. I’m not talking about extreme weight loss either a few pounds a week at most even when I’m running more. I measure and weigh my food to ensure accuracy. If I want to cut weight rapidly I decrease to 1500 and increase my running.
I also have a kick ass electronic scale that reads consistently, looks decent, and is relatively inexpensive. http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B001KXZ808/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I bought a EatSmart scale from Amazon based on recommendations. The numbers are amazingly reliable. It doesn’t care where you place your feet or if you stand on one foot. It gives you the same reading EVERY TIME down to the tenth. Also, based on others theory of “memory” in these scales I just went to try it. Took my weight, then took a few gulps of water and watched as my weight changed by .3 lbs.

Man, I wanted the same. After doing a bunch of research, none of the affordable ones actually seemed to use electrical measurements, they just used an algorithm. I just ended up buying a decent affordable scale, and am thinking of getting a handheld body fat electrical tester. They’re not very accurate though, but at least if you measure around the same time of day and same hydration level, you can chart progress and make sure the bf % goes down, regardless of what your actual bf is.
Here is what I bought http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001KXZ808?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00

.
And here is a review of a body fat scale, that at first glance might seem good because of good reviews, but this guy took his apart. http://www.amazon.com/EatSmart-Precision-Capacity-Recognition-Technology/product-reviews/B004L6NTHU/ref=cm_cr_dp_text?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=0&sortBy=byRankDescending#RX56G95NSGF4P

Tracking your calories and weight will be the only way to tell you what calories you should be eating. You can do it with an app or go old school and write it down pen and paper. The latter is what i’m doing to figure out my current maintenance calorie amount. Apps usually feel like more effort than it’s worth to me. With pen and paper, I can write down the food and the weight and go back and calculate the calories later (I’ve also made a cheat sheet of common foods I eat and got the calories/gram, so I can just do simple math later).

I’m 5’7(27F as well), 145lbs and i’m currenting maintaining with an average of around 2300 calories a day, that’s working out hard 3x a week, biking 1-3x a week. My mom who is 5’8, 140lbs, seems to be maintaining/slight increase at about 1700 calories a day. She does a beginner, easy workout 3x a week, tries to walk 3-4 miles daily. She’s more inconsistent with her diet, and so she tends to go up 5lbs, drop 5lb (not counting water weight). Being you’re significantly shorter than us, that would drop your calories needed in general. But you’re easily more active/stronger than my mom, so who knows. When I was initially losing weight back when I was 20 (160 to 135lbs), I tried to eat around 1500 calories (was loosely tracking), but I wasn’t working out at all, just walking around campus.

So if you can’t stick to calorie counting, just start looking at your food choices now and try eating a little less. Cut out sweets and processed carbs and that’ll help a lot. When serving a plate of food for yourself, put what you would normally on the plate, and then put a spoonful back. Watch any sauce/dressings that you might use, they’re usually calorie dense. But make sure you’re eating a good amount of protein as thats important for your muscles. Even if you don’t track your calories, maybe just try writing down the food you have just so you can kinda see what you are eating. You can look back and be like “did I really need that snack in the afternoon?” Ultimately, you should be looking to change your diet to be a healthier one that you can keep for life so that you don’t gain the weight back.

Losing weight is going to be from cutting your calories. Lifting and cardio do burn calories, but its hard to outrun a bad diet. If you want to gain muscle (which is what you gotta do if you wanna look ‘toned’) you just need to keep lifting. If your program seems to be working for you and you’re progressing through the weights, great! If you don’t feel like you’re progressing well enough, start researching other programs. There is no right answer. To share what i’m doing, i’m either doing a kettlebell workout circuit, or i’m doing heavy bar work. I’ll do 1×20 of just the bar, 1×10 of half my last heavy weight (not 1 rep max weight), then i’ll do 3-4×5 of my heavy weight. Its sometimes 4 because that first set of 5 feels ‘light’, and so I bump it up. I also try and bump it up by 5lbs each time anyway, but that doesn’t always happen. Roughly 2 mins rest between sets. And if I don’t finish a set of 5, i’ll assess and either try again as is after 2 mins or drop 5lbs off.

Since you have weight to lose, you can absolutely do more of a recomp, so you may not drop in weight as fast, but so long as your body is changing for the better, you’re in a good spot. Women can typically gain up to .5-1lb of muscle a month. For losing weight, 1-2lbs a week is solid. But i’d just focus on overall trends. This isn’t a sprint, it’s a marathon. Slow and steady.

Also, time to get a new scale if yours is broken. I’ve used this one from Amazon for years, its been great https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001KXZ808/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I just searched for “scale”, and the first two’s product descriptions stated they’re good up to 400 lb.

I have this one and it works fine for me! No fancy features, but I think often those aren’t that accurate anyway.

I also find that the Sweethome is a really good resource for stuff like this — their roundup of scales is here: http://thesweethome.com/reviews/the-best-bathroom-scales/

Rapid weight loss can be normal in the beginning, especially if a lot of that is water weight.

If you’re wondering about tips for consistent weighing from there, it’s not too complicated.

A nice scale is a good start. It doesn’t need to be expensive to be good. In fact, some of the more expensive features are considered to have highly questionable accuracy (body fat measurements by the impedance method).

Eatsmart scales are known for being both cheap, accurate, and precise. A zillion people use this one. If you want a slightly more expensive upgrade, this is nice. It’s more accurate and precise (I think). And you can input your gender, height, age, and approximate activity level, and it will throw your TDEE back at you when it weighs you, which is nice.

If you really want something fancy, something like the Fitbit Aria will automatically sync your weight with your phone, but it’s far more expensive. There are other nice scales which upload your data automatically. I don’t consider it worth it, personally.

From there, just use a consistent routine. As in, try to keep as many variables as close to constant as possible, when you’re weighing. A lot of people weigh themselves naked as soon as they get up, before they eat/drink anything, just to get the most consistent measurement.

Uhh…

Anyway, I ended up getting this scale from Amazon. Mid range pricing, but with me being on the heavier side, it definitely supports my weight. That, and I find it was far more accurate than my last one.

I like this one, the EatSmart Precision Digital Bathroom Scale.

No fancy features, but it’s got a simple design, easy to read, and it seems to give the same number when I step on it twice.

I chose it because [wirecutter.com](wirecutter.com) gave it the best review. They seem to review all sorts of things, and they’ve done well by me.
