So the Daughter took her beloved cat (she LOVES this cat) to the Roswell Cat Clinic and saw God.

This is her first solo pet, not one of the family pets (it’s actually kinda cute)

She was so enamored with the Vet there and is taking his every word as if it were one of the 10 Commandments. He was really good. He spent almost 2 hours with her talking about cats and their behavior

Apparently, her cat is a “Barn Cat” because the Vet kept calling him a Barn Cat. He also said that it was a “proven fact that Red (orange) cats have the best personalities.

Because our 2 male cats are overweight lazy slobs, we now have to switch our feeding style.

They now have to “hunt for their food” and we have 6 of these little mouse feeders and the cats have to actively work to get the food to come out. Once they figure this out, we are supposed to hide the mouse in the house so the cats have to hunt for their food.

Lucy, our Mico Cat, doesn’t need to do this as she is an indoor/outdoor cat and is svelt so we can still bowl feed her but we have to move her food bowl out into the garage to the boys don’t take all her food.

ETA: I think they’re on sale right now! Actually, when I pulled that link, I saw the price is lower than it was when I bought one… and I just bought a second one.

I just got my tiny tyrant these toy mice since he has been misbehaving. He seems to enjoy them!

This is what I use for my kitties. You can fill them with food or treats and hide them around the house so that the cats have to hunt for them.

These feeding mice are definitely worth a try. They make the cats happier on all kinds of levels because it is fufilling their natural urge to hunt catch kill then eat. You would be putting six out every night so you would need to order two sets, your big guy couldn’t possibly eat all six before the smaller one could get to at least a couple of them if not half of them. Most cats eat one mouse and are satisfied for a while and then they will later go hunt another mouse, and then the third. It is natural for a cat to eat six mice a day. If you have concerns your smaller cat is not getting enough food then in the daytime you can still offer the ball and stand over them, but I think you’re likely to find that will not be necessary.

My girl gets three mice in the morning time and three mice at bedtime. When I get up in the morning sometimes I find two dead mice and sometimes I find three dead mice and I always praise her for killing the mice. She’s real good about dragging them out where I can see them also because she knows I will spot them quicker and refill them right away even though she won’t eat them right away. She is definitely a happier cat since I started using these and I was not noticing any particular issues with her I just got them because I thought they were really cool and I like for as much to be natural for her as possible.

Look for Doc & Phoebe’s, available from multiple places. I Purchased mine from Amazon…Doc & Phoebe’s Indoor Hunting Cat Feeder https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07HFKDJF8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_8-EzCbDW1BSZD

Sorry you got scratched 🙁 It really seems like she’s trying to communicate something frustrating to you. If more play time/toys don’t help, I’d try food puzzles or feeders that she can “hunt” like these cat feeders

I’m sharing one of my favorite things for my cat it makes them happy in many ways and can solve a lot of behavioral problems. In nature cats eat 6 mice a day, these little feeders give them the feeling of the hunt catch kill eat cycle that is so ingrained into them. The amount they hold is about the same as if they were eating a mouse so they get small meals throughout the day as they hunt for it and throughout the night. It comes with three mice and I fill them up in the morning and hide them and then again before I go to bed. Even though my girl generally knows where they are during the day because I have a very small apartment when it comes time for her to hunt catch kill eat I have seen her actually get so engrossed that she does the butt wiggle before leaping towards the mouse.

Cats love to drink from moving water because in nature that is the cleanest water and the safest water. Get a pet fountain if at all possible because your cat will drink more and that will greatly decrease chances of urinary tract problems that can be common in cats.

For the feeding issue…

Get Doc & Phoebe’s mice to feed kitty with. You put out all three in the morning and fill them up again for three at night. Cats naturally eat six mice a day and these fufill that urge/need for hunt, catch, kill, eat, (followed by groom and then sleep) that all cats have.

Your kitty will be hunting for it’s food at night and will be more satisfied and more likely to leave you alone. You may also consider getting some toys the kitty can play with by itself such as balls on tracks, things to bat at, etc. remember to rotate the toys so kitty does not get bored.

Even people get pissed off when they’re hungry. Because she is expending more energy now maybe she needs a little bit more food. Sounds like my cat except for she doesn’t like the chicken or the turkey. I fostered my girls litter and she was the one that knocked everybody down to get to the food to gobble it down. As soon as the others went to their new home, she was very happy to have the place to herself but also figured out she could eat at her leisure. Suddenly she quit eating any wet food and will only eat dry kibble. She is also on a prescription diet that I was about to take back to the vet because she refused to eat it. One day a little bit spilled on the floor and I did not pick it up right away (i’m disabled and some days are worse than others). Later she found the food on the floor and acted like she found the most wonderful treat and she is eating that food since.
I highly recommend treat puzzles for your cat so you don’t have to feed multiple times a day. They are designed for dry food, but they also make dishes designed for wet food that really slows a cat down. Yours is not the only one with that problem.
Like you, I have spent hundreds and hundreds on different wet foods trying to get my girl to eat them. I even did the specialized diets where it’s fresh food chopped up human grade and portioned out -she would not touch any of it. I know the trick is to introduce it slowly and keep giving it to them day after day but after throwing it away week after week I too was exhausted and gave up. My girl will now eat tuna treats (fancy feast little individual foil packets) she ate four of them last night which was quite amazing. It’s nothing but tunafish. She will not touch tuna fish out of human packaging! I finally gave up on getting her to eat moist food because she has a water fountain and she is very good at drinking her water.
Try treating food that you want him to eat like it’s a treat only giving him a little bit at a time each day until he thinks you’re just generous with treats.
Again designed for dry food but my girl will pass up food in her dish or anywhere else to eat it out of these mice… I think it plays more to their natural instincts. My girl absolutely loves these!

Because she eats her dry kibble well now, I use this for treats but you could put bits of food in it also. It’s easy to drop quite a bit in there and it takes them a while to get it out. My girl loves the challenge.

Do you have a scratcher near the couch? What kinda of material is it? Does he scratch when on the seated area (ie he’s scratching horizontally) and if so do you have a horizontal scratcher? Is the cat tree in the same room as the couch?

From your post, it seems he only has one area to scratch (the cat tree) which doesn’t seem like much? I know the tree has multiple but scratching gives cats a sence of home/territory, so honestly try to have one in each room if you can tolerate it, at least the ones that are ‘socially significant’ (ie you spend a lot of time in).

As other already mentioned, more more play. If you work from home, try some interactive cat toys, we also used these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Doc-Phoebe-Interactive-Indoor-Hunting/dp/B07HFKDJF8/ref=sr_1_59?dchild=1&keywords=Automatic+Cat+Toy&qid=1625668740&sr=8-59 which we find keeps them entertained a bit during the day (beware if you have hardwood floors though, they’ll throw them lol).

I know the feeling! I have 2 kittens – one thing I have noticed actually is one usually pounces the calmer one for play when she’s not up for it…then she usually goes for my ankles! So was wondering if you ever noticed he attacks after something ‘stressful’. I think cats do this to let off some steam.

I reread your post and an auto feeder might be a good idea, but only turn it on when you are away? You want to keep as many food providing events to yourself as possible, it helps you bond with the cat. Sure, it’s bribery, but hey! It works 😛 You could also try with the auto feeder, start it quite early in the morning (say 5am) but every other day increase the time by 15 minutes, until he starts moaning? Means you can sleep whilst also trying to train him into a more normal schedule.

I also got this recently: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Doc-Phoebe-Interactive-Indoor-Hunting/dp/B07HFKDJF8 OIne of my cats is great at it and it’s (kinda?) helping him not to wake us up silly early in the morning. The other kitten has no idea how to hunt and just licks them, you’ll know your cat well enough to know if he’ll figure it out (he seems highly food motivated though). If you have hardwood floors beware, they like to bang them lol.

For exploration, I’d try stimulation toys like puzzle feeders. They require her to use her brain, interact with her environment, and often have a dexterity factor to actually get the treat out.

You can even try something like this https://www.amazon.ca/Doc-Phoebes-Indoor-Hunting-Cat/dp/B07HFKDJF8 to have her ‘explore’ around the house in search of food. Even for free, we sometimes scatter kibble on the ground for our cat as it’s more interesting for them.

She can freely graze of her dry food throughout the day in various activity toys that are spread around the house and gets half a tin of easy to digest wet food in a plate that helps against sensitive whiskers. To be honest she rarely finishes the cat food but she doesn’t touch it anymore after it’s been in the fridge for more than a day.

We also gave her a water fountain and helped her coat initially with some dry shampoo and a daily brushing with a brushing glove. We only had to apply the dry shampoo 3 times (a week in between) and after 2 weeks we could gradually reduce the daily brushing to once a week now.
