I wouldn’t bother with car speakers or a big sub unless you already have it. I suggest getting a 2.1 PC speaker system, something similar to this: https://www.amazon.com/Cyber-Acoustics-Subwoofer-Speaker-System/dp/B00006B9W1/

The rest of your plan looks good, although light guns are not great. I’m hearing good things about the new Sinden light guns, I have a pair on order but you may want to browse arcadecontrols forums and post a similar post over there.

Highly recommend Launchbox/Bigbox, I use it and it’s fantastic.

For this environment, I’d imagine that a couple desktop computer speakers would work perfectly fine. Or if you can spare the money, maybe a 3-piece stereo system from Amazon.

For reference, I haven’t used this one in a DJ setup, but these were cheap and sound great even if they are somewhat quiet. They could probably be good enough for some light background level music at a pool. Not sure how much you might be able to boost them through your controller. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00006B9W1/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I have been using the Cyber Acoustics CA-3090 for the last 3 years, and they are sufficient IMO. In all honesty, I didn’t do much research at the time and just picked one of the best sellers on Amazon with decent reviews.

The $200 is basically my limit, but with my current set up I don’t really have the space for the larger sized speakers such as that.

This is what I current use, and the main selling point was that they fit underneath my main computer monitor since I have no space on the sides and no option to wall mount. But I do greatly appreciate your help with this and I will save this for future reference when I am able to have something like this.

Everyone: These are my 2 cents. Follow them or don’t but it’s how I keep up my cabinet. 🙂

After reading through a few of your comments u/MassiR77 would like to offer a few thoughts:

– I do not keep MAME updated. Hear me out… unless you really want that obscure Japanese spinner title to work that doesn’t work now what is the point? I stopped at .232 and, to be honest, I originally stopped at .139! That was what I was running previously. I play 80’s and 90’s arcade games. That’s all I need it for. For the last 7-8 years I have said “Once you get it running how you want with what you want leave it alone unless it breaks”. I updated because I actually started having issues with my front end launching titles on MAME that was years behind.

– I use external emulators like Stella, Nostalgia, Mednafen, PCSX2, etc and they all work great in my setup so I never started using MAME for console emulation. It’s covered.

– I agree with other comments here … DO NOT trim your romset. If you want people to be able to jump in with a selection then set up a Favorites listing in LaunchBox. I personally use GameEx and it’s as easy as scrolling to the title and clicking “Add to Favorites”. Saves people from scrolling through thousands of games … many of which have the same names because they’re the same game!

– Remember that MAME can do it all! So if you’re inclined you could have a trackball, spinner and light guns along with that joystick and button panel! Want quarter slots for credits instead of assigned buttons? It’s out there! Lit up buttons? Cycling color buttons? LED strip lighting? If you want it!

– Don’t skimp on that sound system either. I use Cyber Acoustics 18W 2.1 speakers. The mains fire down from the marquee and the sub is in the base. The real selling point is the control pod can be put anywhere within reach. It has the power switch as well as input and headphone jacks.

– I cheated on the actual cabinet I admit. I have an X-Arcade Tankstick and RecRoomMasters cabinet. Some buy dead cabinets or shells and gut them. Others build them from scratch. Do what makes you happy. This is a monetary sinkhole no matter what you do but you’re going to be spending a lot of time on it and playing with it. Make it how you want it. 🙂

– Lastly… decide what you want out of this. If this is going to be strictly a MAME cabinet then you don’t need much to run it and once it’s up it doesn’t even need to be connected to the internet. Mine morphed over the years and has kind of become a centerpiece in the living room that I use to play games as well as stream, browse the web, do the budget, play the radio… all that.

Enjoy!!

I installed these in my full size cabinet and they sound phenomenal. The sub gives the bass needed. No amp required. Plug n play includes lit volume control. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00006B9W1/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_hN6sFb86J5R0J

I bought these 3 years ago. Nice sound, nothing fancy, and it comes with a little subwoofer
