You’ll probably get a lot of people repeating the conventional wisdom of not getting a set. That’s fine and there’s some value to that idea, but I don’t think it works. Yes, you will eventually find your way to the pieces that work best for you, but how will you do that if you don’t start somewhere. A good set is a good place to start, otherwise you’re either not going to have enough pieces to figure out what you really want or you’re just going to be copying someone else’s unique setup.

When I started cooking for real about 15 or so years ago, I got this set from Cuisinart and I can highly recommend it. The pieces are still just as useful as they were 15 years ago. I’ve replaced almost all of them by now, but still have some and some I’ve given away. This is a fantastic place to start.

Frankly, don’t listen to people telling you not to get a set. You need to figure out what you like to cook with and a set is a great way to figure that out. You can adjust later.

When I started cooking for real in I think 2007, I got this set, which I highly recommend. Over time, I learned what I like and acquired more pieces, many of which replaced that original set. Out of that set, I still use the 8qt stockpot. It’s a great set and I cooked many many meals using it. I cook every day of the week most weeks, so the pans got a ton of use for many years and have held up perfectly.

I bought this set 5 years ago and it still works fantastically. Just make sure to follow the instructions for cleaning it (never use steel wool unless you want it to look like crap).

I opted for this 10-piece Cuisinart set and I think it’s pretty awesome, especially for the price (which is right within your range). It’s all stainless steel and, having used the set almost daily for over a year now, I can’t even notice any wear.

I bought this ss set for ~$120 a couple of months ago and I’m no expert, but they’ve served me well so far:

I also bought this non-stick skillet for eggs and such:

Exactly. Heavy metal poisoning is incorrect, but teflon is a carcinogen:

Now, aluminum, while used extensively in commercial kitckens, can also cause some health issues but not heavy metal poisoning.

FWIW, I would recommend a good set of stainless cookware with an aluminum core. Copper is nice but expensive and cannot go in the dishwasher. Stainless just won’t react with any food and is relatively bomb-proof. All-Clad is fabulous stuff, but for my money, this is almost as good – Cuisinart:

I’ve had this for a number of years and am very happy with it. Yes, it does have a nice mirror polish on the exterior that can scratch with use…but I don’t buy pots and pans to show them off. I like to use them and in that case, they’re gonna get scratched no matter what!
