I Am pretty particular with sound in my PC’s. I have gone through more than a few different ones over the years. For large screen entertainment or surround sound speaker setup, I ultimately settled for Bitstreaming Audio directly through the HDMI output. Basically negates the need of a sound card and is great for surround sound (currently Dolby Atmos, TruHD, DTS-HD-MA or even uncompressed audio streaming.
However..I do enjoy using headphones and my Sony MDR-1’s. They sound amazing, but only if the sound can push audio through properly. Ultimately, I found that a USB interface removed all background noise that I was able to hear with every PCIe sound card I’ve used. I picked up a Creative Soundblaster E5 as my solution. The price is about right and the unit has incredible sound having a separate amp for each audio channel. You can’t hear the difference on cheap headsets, but with any quality headset, the difference is mind blowing.

My mind is about made up on the soundblaster e5, but here’s the thing. My dad has a P.O. Box that he recently got working again. So I did some looking on the US amazon site and found it cheaper than the one on the Canadian site. So just wondering again, is this the exact same?

the soundblaster e5 is a good dac amp for 100 on amazon

the e5 powers my dt990 600ohm without issue. It has the same power as the G6 which I own as well.

Tl;dr Good DAC+Amp for Sennheiser HD600 in Canada?

Hey there /r/headphones!

A friend just sold me his HD600s last night. I’m now looking for a DAC and an amp (or a DAC-amp combo) to use them with. I’d like to pay below 200 CAD.

The previous owner recommended the Creative Sound Blaster E5, slightly above my budget at 230 CAD. A Schiit stack would be nice, but it’s over my budget too (USD to CAD + shipping makes it close to 300). Same thing for the JDS Labs Objective2+ODAC…

Should I wait to save more money and increase my budget to ~300, or is there a DAC+amp available under 200 CAD that could still help me take full advantage of the HD600’s sound? Thanks!

of course, but then it is not a DAC/Amp anymore.

If you are looking to buy an external soundcard that can also work as portable DAC/Amp check out the Soundblaster E5 which can be used as External 7.1 virtual surround soundcard (ADC/DAC/Amp) when connected to your PC and functions as Stereo portable DAC/Amp with your phone.

I have the E5 which I actually enjoy a lot. I think it sounds better than my FiiO e10k with most cans. There’s noticeable degradation of sound quality switching from USB data mode to Bluetooth but that’s the sacrifice you make for portability. It drives most headphones well, with the except of some of the more power hungry pairs. The monolith M1060s in particular don’t sound very good with this DAC.

No worries! Like Foghat: I’m on the slow ride.
I’m in Salt Lake City. (Google has led me to this site for local headphones: https://www.performanceaudio.com )
I’m seeing that they have a handful of various brands I’ve started to learn about. (I have a pair of AKG earbuds that came w/ a Samsung work phone that have a surprisingly great sound…but I still dislike earbuds.)

I’ve heard that a lot of the audiophile community likes to ignore PC based equipment\manufacturers, but it seems like something along the lines of this DAC+amp would be a logical deeper dive into the hobby?

Just to make some heads explode: I’d make sure to tell everyone I’m pairing it with my Bose QC25s. Haha!

I’m getting the DT 770, but i don’t know if i’ll go with the 80 or 250 ohm since they’re at the same price on amazon, i don’t know what is the difference between them, is it that the one with most ohm (250) is louder even with less volume?

So apart from that, i’m also getting a DAC, but i don’t know which one should i get Creative Sound Blaster E5 i don’t know if this is actualy an DAC or an AMP, or Micca OriGen+ DAC, the mothergoad that i have is the Gigabyte GA-Z170X-Gaming 7 and it does have Creative® Sound Core 3D chip.

Cheapest option I know off the top of my head is this: https://www.amazon.com/Creative-Portable-Headphone-Amplifier-Bluetooth/dp/B00MXJYDUO

I’d probably go with a Schiit Magni Uber and find some DAC that does all you want.
