I was hoping for something that used the lightening port, as my iphone doesn’t have a headphone jack. i picked up one of these as I wanted the amplifier feature also:

I’ve got a Brand NEW, without box, Creative Sound Blaster E1 Portable Headphone Amplifier for only $30 shipped Link. Condition is a perfect 10/10 with the protective clear plastic still on the rear clip. It’s really small, charges its internal battery via microUSB and sounds great! Also comes with a microUSB and 3.5mm audio cable.

in the case of gaming headset you don’t want a DAC/Amp. those devices are only outputting sound and cannot accept microphone input.

For a gaming headset like the revolver I would not recommend spending more than $50 for an external sound card.

My pick would be the Soundblaster E1

While the software may be a nightmare to install and properly set up the first time, perphaps a Soundblaster E1 could solve your problems? It’s around $40 on amazon.
Just a suggestion for you, it’s what I use with my boom pro mic.

1 point

·

30th Jun 2017

a DAC/Amp never has mic input, the whole point of such a device is to only spit audio out. But never accept mic input. You can just connect the mic to the mobo in while using the K1 though. Alternatively a sub mic is also an easy solution.

What you are looking for is an external soundcard; the best entry level option is the Creative Soundblaster E1

1 point

·

then I’d recommend you say goodbye to onboard sound and get an external device that handles sound processing and mic input. The cheapest you can get away with is the Soundblaster E1

Sure

One uses the fantastic ROG SupremeFX Impact 8-Channel High Definition Audio CODEC….that’s 6 channels more than you have ears, super important for headphones! They don’t provide any other specs, cuz you don’t need those.

The other one is a 230 Euro marketing stunt that outputs a whopping 1Vrms at 32 Ohms. That’s an insane amount of power only matched by true power houses like the Soundblaster E1

On a serious note:

Use the line out of that mobo and buy a decent stereo desktop amp like the Magni 2.

Just looking into a portable amplifier. How would this one work if I want to use them with TX2BK earphones and ATH-M50x headphones? Sorry if this is a silly question but I don’t really understand impedances and things likes that.

A DAC/Amp will never support a mic.

You need an external soundcard. Something like the Soundblaster E1 will do, but you will not find anything gaming related that will have the same quality as the Schiit Stack.

Your best option would be getting a desktop mic instead of a boom mic.

If you are willing to spend some cash go at least for a Soundblaster E1.

But the mic should work from an ALC887 without a problem.

Yes. It will plug in through USB, and you will plug your headphones and mic directly into it. The link is the one I have. However I only paid like $30 for it, so idk why it is more now. But, it will not only solve your problem, but also make your audio/mic sound way better.

This one

https://www.amazon.com/Creative-Headphone-Amplifier-Integrated-Smartphones/dp/B00J2JATL0

It is nothing special, but imo it sounds way better than my onboard audio. Also it can go much louder than my onboard. There are definetly better “bang for your buck” amp/DAC combos out there though, so I would do some research on that.

Okay, so the link is the exact product I have. However, it is just a bit over your budget. But it would solve your problem, and sound better than your onboard audio.

> do they have surround sound?

Virtual surround sound is not “made” by a headphone. Virtual surround is done by a sound processor that digitally applies different equalizers and spatialization to achieve a “virtual” surround feeling.

Virtual surround means that the headphone you are using only has 2 channels (stereo) but the software tries to improve soundstage and imaging. Most of the times this this kind of processing is applied to very bad sounding gaming headphones that would otherwise be absolutely awful. the HM5 / XPT100 is a good stereo headphone that doesn’t really require any DSP programs to achieve imaging and stage.

If you want to add a virtual surround effect to the stereo signal you’ll have to either use a soundcard or an external DAC/Amp like the Soundblaster E1 to apply digital sound processing.

An audio interface is absolute overkill for the ModMic and not really compatible. Get a Sound Blaster E1 instead: if you want to spend money, get the G5 or X7.

How else would I use them other than stereo? There is only two ears on my body. I have an amplifier when I need it. But that doesn’t matter, they are powered headphones that have a built in amp.

Creative Sound Blaster E1 is similar to the K1. Now, I’m not going to say it’s better or worst, but it’s USB powered, has headphone out and mic in, and a physical volume control (the worse volume control I’ve ever used, btw). It has a fairly high noise floor when the physical volume is at max, so it’s not what I would call high fidelity, exactly, but it really just depends on what features you need and your willingness to trade off hi-fi for them.

It’s also cheaper.

Good luck in your search for a solution!

The way i have done it, is with a Antlion Mod Mic

and this thing for a clean sounding mic input

http://www.amazon.com/Creative-Headphone-Amplifier-Integrated-Smartphones/dp/B00J2JATL0

you can even use it as a portable headphone amp, drives my dt990 250ohms at reasonable levels.

I would doubt it. But the nice thing is that the Vive also has a USB port so you have more options than just using a long cable. So you can have either the option of an inexpensive usb powered amp like this amazon.com/Creative-Headphone-Amplifier-Integrated-Smartphones/dp/B00J2JATL0 or a more expensive high quality DAC.

Figure that’d be better, or the Creative one since I can raise the volume beyond just the PC settings.

I’m seeking a pair of headphones to outperform my ATH M50x’s. Outperforming such a great piece of hardware is pretty tough, so I started looking into the $300-$400 range and consulted other guides. I read the Oppo PM3’s[1] were an amazing buy, but didn’t see them on the spreadsheet anywhere. I know more expensive headphones are less numerous and so less opinions can be given about them. Is there someone who can give their opinion on headphones in this higher tier?

Per formatting edit: I prefer to spend under $600 as I don’t think I should be spending a month’s rent on headphones, $400 is a comfortable soft cap for me.

I would be using these with my computer or phone, and I believe I have what counts as an amp .

A high degree of noise isolation is not required, but I would greatly enjoy if I feel like listening to softer music when flying.

Must be over ear.
I prefer a balanced midrange , but it must have rich and crisp bass. I am more fond of bass heavy genres but don’t want a bass emphasis to interfere with by instrumental music tastes.

I’m am mostly looking to improve upon my M50x’s that I love. The improvements I want are headphones that feel more solid and rugged (more metal components perhaps) and have a warmer feel to them. I want to close my eyes and feel as if I am inside a helmet made specifically for music listening.

The way to do that is to take the rca connectors off one end of a stereo pair of male to male rca cables. Plug in to speaker jacks on back of amp, + to +, – to -.

Another solution would be Creative Sound Blaster E1 Portable Headphone Amplifier with Integrated Mic and Dual Headphone Jacks for PC and Smartphones https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00J2JATL0/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_sGA-vbVM177XW

You’d use headphone to headphone out cable from PC to the headphone amp. Headphone amp has two dedicated headphone outs. Use each with 3.5 – > rca splitter cables. One for hifi one for sub. Emf noise added is trivial. Volume control is less awesome however – sub volume won’t increase with hifi volume unless both are set matched at listening volume and listening volume control is at the headphone amp, not the hifi.

Amp advice
I have Audiotechnica M40x’s and I’m looking at getting an amp for them. I’m not an audiophile by any means so I’m thinking the product I’m looking at will be good enough for me, but I figured I’d listen to suggestions first.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00J2JATL0/ref=s9_simh_gw_p267_d0_i1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=desktop-1&pf_rd_r=1E8YM2GHBXWV7Y64RWCH&pf_rd_t=36701&pf_rd_p=2079475242&pf_rd_i=desktop

I’m looking at buying that amp. What I like about it is that it has an in line mic as well as a volume slider. I don’t really have a budget, but I also don’t really want to spend a lot of money because I probably won’t care enough about the difference between a medium grade and a high grade.

I should probably clarify that it does not have to be portable.

They’re not, but they do a pretty good job of blocking ambient noise.

They’re a dual design; the cirmcumaural pads go over the ear, and an inner cushion goes directly on the ear.

EDIT: Airplanes are too much for them to handle; I bought a Creative SoundBaster E1 headphone amp and that was enough to overcome the noise.

So I’m not really sure how to word this – here I go.

I have narrowed down my choices to either:

Sennheiser HD 598($150) OR Audio-Technica ATH-M50x($144)

Budget: <=$150

Source: PC

Usage: Gaming + Music

Question : Will using an amp like so make either of these headphones sound better?

Looking for a DAC/AMP (combo possible?) for my ATH-M50x. I’d use it on my PC and on my cellphone, so a portable one is ideal.

So far, the most commonly bought alongside the M50x is this, the Creative Sound Blaster E1 Portable. I have no idea if this is good/will work well alongside my headphones.

Thanks for any advice/feedback.

How much do you care about sound bleed? If you want a “wider” sound stage and to be better able to tell directional audio you may want an open backed headphone?

They are kinda hard to get these days due to their popularity but something like the Philips SHP9500 might work well for you. Just don’t pay more than $75, if you are lucky and patient you can get them ~$60 on NewEgg.

Otherwise the V-MODA Crossfade LP2s you mentioned should be passible, other options in that price range include K240 MK II and the ATH-M40x (with an adapter mod).

If you want to further give yourself an advantage you can edit the EQ settings on your sound card to increase the sound of footsteps or whatever. Creative have an automatic setting on their sound cards called “Scout Mode” that does this automatically with a hotkey macro. The Sound Blaster E1, BlasterX G1, or any of Creative’s other “Blaster” or “BlasterX” gaming branded products should support this.

Hello, I’m relatively new to high-end headphones so I’m hoping I can get some input here. I’m looking at the BeyerDynamic DT 880 Editions because I don’t love closed headphones but open ones can be bothersome to those around me. I wanted the 600 ohm version to get the most out of my purchase, but I don’t know much about headphone amps.
I was looking at the Creative Sound Blaster E1 as a headphone amp I can use away from my desk.
Are those products a good match for a total budget of about $250? Or, do you have any recommendations for something different that would be better? I listen to a lot of classical, rock, and jazz music.
Thank you!

Location – United States

Budget – $130 – $300 [USD]

Source – Future Built Desktop / Google Pixel / 2017 Dell Latitude 7000 2-in-1 13.3″

Requirements for Isolation – Not really a requirement, I don’t think its possible for headphones to leak loud enough for neighbors to hear in an apartment complex. The majority of use, if not all to begin with, will be at my apartment.

Will you be using these Headphones in Public? No, not looking for a portable AMP/DAC

Preferred Type of Headphone – Over Ear / Open Back (would consider closed)

Preferred tonal balance – I definitely like bass, but feel I can get my fill of it in my car. I’m not an experienced audiophile so i’m not sure what I like, see below.

Past headphones – Had ATH-M50X coupled with this used off of a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and a Desktop PC primarily. Currently have Jaybird X3’s.

Preferred Music – I listen to every genre, but if I had to quantify: 30% Hip Hop, 15% Rock, 20% EDM/Dubstep/Chillstep, 15% Country, 15% Metal/Screamo, 5% Jazz. I’m open to experiencing all that a high end pair of headphones can offer and will likely listen to stuff off /r/audiophilemusic a lot.
These will also be mainly used for gaming so I would like to think a wide and accurate sound stage is the most critical aspect?

What would you like to improve on from your set-up – To experience the next level or at least very close to the ATH-M50X. That’s why my budget has a lower end, it’d be nice to save money and spend under $200 if there was something that could blow the M50X out of the water.

I plan to pair with the Schiit Magni 3 and Schiit Modi 2. Open to something else that may pair better with whatever you may suggest, but that indicates my AMP/DAC budget.
Would this be all I needed for a decent setup to start or do I have to buy additional cables or upgraded cables??

As for current ideas, I was looking to stretch for the Sennheiser HD600’s, but the 20 yr age of the design is off-putting to me for some reason.
In addition to those:
* AKG 6XX – 7XX
* Sennheiser HD598/599
* Beyerdynamic DT990
* Bang & Olufsen BeoPlay H6
* Any comparable Audio Technica

You would still need an amp to get the most out of it. Your PC can only push headphones up to a certain ohm rating, otherwise it would sound quite flat or not be very loud.

For a comparison, my HyperX Clouds are 60 ohm headphones. My phone can drive them better than my PC out of the headphone jack can ever do*. So something like this can help somewhat.

EDIT: *When plugged into the side blue plug. The main green plug cna push headphones decently. I would still recommend getting an external DAC/Sound card though if you want nice sound.

I want to preface this by saying that I am not remotely an expert on any of this. You’d be better off getting another person’s opinion on amps. But, I found this one that has good reviews and is pretty inexpensive:

I have compiled a small list of pocket headphone amplifiers within my price range that I am considering buying. A little info first: I am not super picky on how things sound. I have a pair of superlux hd681 evos. I use the headphones for music and video games. They sound great, but I wish they were louder sometimes (and maybe a little more bass). That being said, are these amps a good choice for a newbie? Or could you recommend one in the same price range? Thanks for your input!
