I couldn’t be happier with the Coway 1512. Now when I wake up I can breathe with both nostrils! The lowest speed is basically silent unless your head is 1 foot from the device. I leave it on auto which is cool because it senses particles in the air and temporarily goes to higher speeds until the air is clear again. Funnily enough, if you fart near it, it will detect that and spin up. It also pretty thoroughly eliminates odor in general.
My only complaints are:
The only 3rd party filter I’ve found for it has been reviews so you’re generally stuck with the first party filters which can seem expensive but they last a long time so it’s not terrible
When I moved across the country, the fan became unbalanced which made the device loud. Personally I blame the movers since they broke/lost a bunch of my stuff but that still does indicate a failure mode of the device.
The light on the top is a fucking flood light that will blind people up to 5 miles away. I taped over it.
If I had a magic wand and could make one change to this device I’d want washable hepa filters but from what I’ve read, washable hepa filters don’t exist at all so its not a shortcoming of this specific device.
Finally, I’m not affiliated with them and benefit in no way from this post. The Amazon link above is not an affiliate link. I’m just a happy customer who was surprised by the improvement in my life when I got a hepa filter.
·
I’d second the air purifier, although my personal rec. is this one, which is a little cheaper than the one you linked. We have a dog, and the rooms with air purifiers in them only need vacuuming like once a month for dog hair because the purifier picks all that stuff up in the pre-filter. Obviously you have to clean out the pre-filter, but that’s easy and well worth it.
·
We have this Coway one from Amazon and are very happy with it. We have it running constantly anyway but have been using the higher setting since the forest fires.
·
But I have one of these and it’s maybe the best weed accessory I have. It has an auto-mode that kicks into higher gear whenever it smells stink.
It will not remove the smell during the smoking process but cleans it up VERY quickly afterwards.

The Mrs. has asthma and this bad boy has changed her life in our apartment.

I keep trying to link my link but Reddit dosnt like it so here you go Coway Airmega AP-1512HH True HEPA Air Purifier with Air Quality Monitoring, Auto Mode, Timer, Filter Indicator, Eco Mode https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BTKAPUU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_MAYK3SGBP9VQ4PR8PFEN
·
Yeah this is the one I have. I just have to clean the prefilter every once in a while, but I haven’t had to replace the HEPA one yet. I’m debating getting a second one for my living room since I live with a cat+right next to a freeway
·
The other half of the convo is a hepa air filter. I like the Coway AP-1512HH ($200 right now on Amazon) but shop around.
For your poor kitty, you can keep them in a closed up part of the home while you open up and air out the rest, then close up and switch on your air filter for a bit before letting them out. It’s a hassle, but with a good fan and air filter (maybe two of each if you live in a big space) it shouldn’t take too long.
·
I have a Coway Mighty and live in an old apartment that has a lot of areas smoke can leak in; very fresh and clean inside. Also have two cats that shed and you’d never notice. Parents honestly currently love hanging at my place even though they have cat allergies. It makes that much of a difference.
If you invest even $150 in something decent it’s worth it. Mine was pricey but has a 4 stage filtration system, only change filters once a year for around $60. Make’s a hell of a difference whether it’s smoker, pets, chemicals, etc.
·
Hello BIFL! I am moving into an apartment with 2 windows facing railroad tracks and will be needing an air purifier or 2. I came across the Coway AP-1512HH Mighty Air Purifier which seemed like a great option! What does BIFL think and do you guys have any other suggestions?
·
If you are so inclined, buy an air purifier. I have one of these at home for cat allergies, because of course my girlfriend has 3 of the furry little razor claws.. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BTKAPUU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
This thing is great. I have a huge living room, not sure if its quite shop sized but it might be close – and this thing will suck a cloud from above my head straight into the corner where it sits. I’ve chain vaped on purpose just to mess with it and it went from hotbox territory to next to nothing in just a few mins.
·
Seems like staying inside, trying to keep the dust off the floors, and using an air purifier is a good idea at this point. If you have a car, you can get a cheapish place on Hotwire.com and spend a night in Monterrey – where the air is much, much cleaner. If not for my family (who can’t leave), I would be getting out of here myself.
FYI – this is a top rated air purifier for $205 + tax on Amazon, with prime 2 day delivery.

I swear by this one – it’s been running 24/7 for over 3 years now. Just don’t use the ozone setting because it’s not good to breathe (look it up). https://www.amazon.com/Coway-AP-1512HH-Mighty-Purifier-True/dp/B00BTKAPUU

What does those numbers mean? It seems different than the AQI.
Do you have a mask? I was wearing one inside the house today and it was helping me feel better (less coughing).
I am waiting for this to arrive from Amazon:

I would highly recommend Coway systems. I have pretty bad allergies purchased a Coway Airmega 300 for my 850sq ft studio. I’ve been incredibly happy with it so far. It is extremely well designed and the pre-filters are super easy to clean.
Considering the size of your room you may want to take a look at the Coway Mighty, which is smaller but made by the same company. It currently sits at the top of The Wirecutter’s air purifier recommendations.
The Black Coway Mighty is discounted down to $206 on Amazon. Looking at it’s price history on CamelCamelCamel, it seems that is a reasonable discount. If you can wait a bit, it looks like it drops below $175 pretty regularly.

I have this one which I bought after reading this review from Wirecutter.
I first got one when I lived in a 600 sq ft apartment with 3 kittens, and it was a workhorse. Now I have a house and I’ve gotten 3 more of the same model because I think it’s so efficient. I especially like that you can take it apart and vacuum out the hair and dust instead of replacing the filters. I clean it about once per month or every other month, which definitely improves performance. I got a new HEPA filter after 2 years of non-stop use.
I think the combination of baking soda in the litter plus an air filter for the dust is key. I also splurged for a Modkat box with a lid and one with top entry, and those configurations plus their liners make it easier to replace all the litter and clean the box itself every few weeks. Our old boxes got scratched up, making them smellier and harder to keep clean.
·
I like this one: https://www.amazon.com/Coway-AP-1512HH-Mighty-Purifier-True/dp/B00BTKAPUU
If youre poor just slap a hepa filter on the back of a box fan – thats all it is anyway

I have one of these. Seems to work well, I mostly use it for weed smoke and it really takes care of it.

We have 2 of these and they work well: https://smile.amazon.com/Coway-AP-1512HH-Mighty-Purifier-True/dp/B00BTKAPUU/

From one of the links in my first post, this Conway seems well-rated and with decently-priced replacement filters. I’m afraid I don’t know anything about German import costs though. The Conway allows the ionizer function to be turned off. The reviews appear to be legitimate as well.

It looks like they’ve rebranded it as another airmega, this is the correct one though

Thank you for being so informative.
I’m looking at Coway Airmega’s, especially for places like the family room. How often are you replacing filters would you say?

Is it this one?
Would something like this be good for a small room?

Can anyone link to some more air filtering information resources? I have never dealt with wildfire smoke before.
- what is the difference between MERV 13 and HEPA? (seems like HEPA filters are 99.97 vs MERV is 90% of particles under 0.03um? but I’m not exactly sure, here are a few articles: one and two but every site i can find is trying to sell me something, so take with a grain of salt)
- guides for building DIY box fan filters? (I found this one and this one but have no idea how effective it is – any user experiences here?)
- recommended air purifiers? is true HEPA needed for smoke or can you get by with a 90% filter? I read that for in-room purifiers you don’t really need true HEPA 99.97% filtration because the purifier recirculates the same air multiple times. the use case is not like that of a mask where the air must be completely filtered after one pass. But again, who trusts random affiliate blogspam websites anymore? A few air purifiers I saw recommended in a few such articles are: this one and this one but I’m sure there are many more

I have two, one for my bedroom and one for my living room. And recently since I am working from home so often, I bought a third one for my office.
The two main ones I have are:
Coway AP-1512HH Mighty Air Purifier with True HEPA and Eco Mode
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BTKAPUU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_kXOpFbJFBMEAM
Coway Airmega 300 Smart Air Purifier with 1,256 sq. ft. Coverage
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01C9RI96S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_qYOpFbD06EFSM
There is a 400 version of the air mega if you need larger coverage. I think either is fine, but I think I like the 1512 Mighty better, you can independently replace the carbon and pre filters and it seems to have stronger airflow, the annoying thing about it is a really bright LED at night, but just get a quarter coin to cover it up. Both are solid buys though and I don’t regret either.
I bought the purifiers for dog smells, bad local air pollution, and indoor VOCs. I strongly recommend them.

Went with the wire cutter pick: Coway AP-1512HH Mighty Air Purifier with True HEPA and Eco Mode https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BTKAPUU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_tDykFbR25JWNF

That’s a shame, it would really help with the smoke/ash and air quality there- I live in California and can confirm that air-purifiers help a ton during wildfires, maybe you could buy one send it to a relative or someone you trust in North America and then have them ship it over to you in australia personally… I don’t know there might be a company that can do that for you too but I wouldn’t be able to give you advice on that.
You could always go to amazon or some other large online retailer for electronics that sells purifiers, look for “True HEPA 99.97%” and “Activated Carbon” those are the two most important parts of the purifier, I recommend the Coway Mighty-Air and the Winix 5500-2/5300
They are nearly identical, I think youtuber third parties testing them both found them to almost work exactly the same, with the Winix one winning out due to miscellaneous features the mightyair didn’t have. The differences between the 5500-2 and the 5300-2 are also very small, one has a remote and that’s the only difference I believe, so if you don’t care about the small price hike thats it.
The P150-450 line is Winix’s newest updated line, they use the same physical filters (in-fact I believe the 300’s filter can be utilized in the 5500) and they both use “plasmawave” though since the P series is newer, that might be improved or at the very least have newer components and bulbs, According to winix and CADR/AHAM testing the P-450, it has about 50~100 higher score in each category dust/pollen/smoke but if you look at the P-300, it’s nearly identical by a difference of + or – 10 points.
So for around the same price from amazon you are ‘almost’ getting the same product.

I live in Atlanta where we get a giant amount of pollen in the spring. Getting an air purifier has worked wonders for me.
After doing a bunch of research I purchased a Coway Airmega 300. It has been excellent, but is probably overkill for your space. There’s a smaller one from the same company called the Mighty, which has been a top Wirecutter pick in the past.
I don’t have direct experience with it, but Amazon has it discounted down to about $130 right now. According to CamelCamelCamel, that’s the lowest it’s ever been.
·
Probably good. https://www.missionallergy.com/ is the most commonly-recommended. I also have their comforter.
I use Coway https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BTKAPUU/ref=oh_aui_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 – it’s won some awards, seems good. You can get aftermarket filters which are pretty affordable. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076JJ42V7/ref=sspa_dk_detail_0?psc=1
Make sure to clean your prefilter routinely. It’ll tell you when to replace your other filters.
I have a small studio (around 350 sq ft); I run https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07MXDRTKJ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 continuously and it’ll cost me about $20/month – I’m able to get to the upper 30% relative humidity. After I’ve done this for a few months I might relax it a bit and target 45% or something since 35-40% is pretty dry.
Sorry for the delay, LMK if you have any other questions.

I was not expecting this. Is the answer in affirmative?
I will just tell you the product that I have settled upon – Coway AP-1512HH
This seems to be the best choice as per this website and the price is too good to be true.
If you have the opportunity and it doesn’t cause you issues in luggage limit (it’s almost 16kgs) or any other botheration in your travel plans then I will be pleased as punch if you get this 🙂
I don’t have a CC to pay outright and my purchasing power is down because I have just booked tickets for my friend from Dubai. I can pay on 23rd Oct any costs associated in getting this to any part of India.
And I will find a way to get this from Kolkata to Jaipur/Delhi (my city). Also are you a native of West Bengal? I am asking because they don’t normally miss the Pujo at home.
looking to hear from you!
