Have never used a mechanical keyboard before and I’m thinking of buying one. After doing a tiny bit of research, I found one I think I’d like a lot. However… As someone who is used to buying a $30 membrane keyboard every few years the $90 price tag (and that’s a sale price!) is just way too much. I could justify $50, mayyyyybe $70, but $90 isn’t gonna happen. So I’m asking for a recommendation.

Features I would like:
Linear switches (or, quiet, easy-to-press switches for my fat, lazy fingers)
Flat design (the most comfortable keyboards I’ve ever typed on were laptop keyboards)
Full layout (I use numpad a lot, and honestly I don’t like the look of a keyboard without it)

Other features are probably not important to me.

The keyboard I found: https://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-Sk-650-Gklr1-US-Mechanical-Keyboard/dp/B07N4DFPNM

RGB also is completely unimportant to me. The above keyboard just happens to have it. I would remove it to save $20 any day.

This is something I have wondered about as well. I use multiple keyboards and have loved the deathstalker since I got it around release. I haven’t used it a ton so my original is still working but I have been wondering what to do when it eventually goes. One of the closest I have found is the Cooler Master SK 650, which has the same low profile non-angled keycaps and low profile switches. The only thing is it does use low profile mechanical switches underneath. I also think Cooler Master is discontinuing it soon so not a permanent solution even if it works for you.

Here’s the link if you need –

I look forward to seeing if anyone else has anything closer.

Depends on what you mean by ‘best’.

Criteria for a good keyboard are:1 – Switch Type (Cherry MX Blue/Brown/RED etc)2 – Material Construction (Aluminum, Steel)3 – Addressable keys4 – Connection Quality (Braided/Detachable Cable)

Almost no keyboard meets all of these options and more often than not companies are selling gimmicks like RGB and gaudy decals as if they were features.

That all being said, a good reference would be something like the Coler Master SK-650. It has RGB for folks that care about it, and it has solid construction, durable switches, a full 10key, and simple branding with no large decals or names. It doesn’t have addressable keys, or a replaceable cable, it is under $100 and it’s about as good as it gets in that price point.

An alternative option would be the HyperX Alloy FPS. You get a braided, removable cable, but lose the RGB, and you get stuck with some tacky looking keys and logos.
