That Red Dragon keyboard is mechanical. The only (maybe) negative about it is that it only comes with red LEDs.

As for tenkeyless… check out the other keyboard I mentioned, CM Quickfire TK, it’s roughly the same size as a tenkeyless (maybe an inch wider) but has a full numpad. How this works is that it combines the keypad with the delete/insert/scroll lock+arrow keys and iuses numlock to toggle between them.

Imo, it’s the best of both worlds.

The Apex+Apex raw are membrane keyboards, they’re seriously overpriced for membrane keyboards, you’re best off getting something like the CM Quickfire Rapid TK (4 switch options, including MX green which is quite rare among ‘mainstream’ keyboards, there’s also the CM QF Rapid-i, a standard TKL layout, which also has a standard bottom row (so at a later point, you can get higher quality keycaps), otherwise, the KBP V80 TKL is on Massdrop quite often for ~$90, shipping may throw it over though, depends where you live.

ducky has gone on sale the past couple of months at around the $100 mark for the tkl version. it seemed they were clearing stock to make way for the shine 5. you could monitor ncixus.com to see if it goes on sale again.

das isn’t backlit.

quickfire rapid-i has led issues – a failure rate higher than normal.

maybe this would work for you? quickfire tk. in place of the normal arrow cluster you have a numpad that you can toggle between the arrows and numpad. http://www.amazon.com/CM-Storm-QuickFire-TK-Mechanical/dp/B00A378L10/ – just note that the bottom row isn’t of a standard layout – harder to get complete keycap sets to fill it up

Yeah, though I did not hear this about other LED keyboards. Some say it was just the first batch and it’s gone now .. but I don’t know.

Anyhow, I wanted to let you know I ordered the Quick Fire TK from amazon. 22 USD Shipping, which is not too bad. It’s not yet in stock, but in a few days. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00A378L10?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=od_aui_detailpages00

Thank you so much for your help.

Oh wow, that was a journey. I took me 2x 4h of research, comparison and tears. I wanted a smaller version (TenKeyLess) with US Layout, but I live in the EU.

Ended up with the Quick Fire TK. I really wanted a Max Keyboard Blackbird, but with shipping from US it would be a total of 205 USD, a bit too much for my first mechanical keyboard.

I seriously recommend you save up another 20-25 bucks and get a real Cherry MX keyboard.

I have a this mech board with red switches. However, my friend was borrowing it when his Ducky was in RMA so I do not have it with me. I also have my old headphones, Sony MDR-XB500s. Not sure if I want to keep them or sell those though.

This is for sure what you want when there back in stock. On another note I got a nixeus TKL with Kailh Brown switches for $50 a while ago, my just have to keep your eye out for stuff like that. I have had no bad experiences with Kailh but others are much less trusting.

Thank you! Definitely a lot more happenin’ than /r/keyboards. Yeah, I have to say, I was utterly confused when I first saw the options for switches (which I didn’t even know there were such options). Luckily there are some guides, and I think for me probably anything will be such an upgrade, I won’t be too worried if I get the “wrong” one. I just looked at what people recommend for gaming etc. I was leaning toward browns also.

I do like having the num pad for homework, but I really appreciate you recommending a brand because I don’t know what’s out there. I’m sure they have other models I could take a look at, like this looks to have everything I’m looking for, and the reviews are very encouraging also. Thank you again!

Quickfire tk is an option but be aware of weird key sizes so the space bar is in replaceable except with the max keyboard black translucent set and the bottom modifiers are harder to find but if u like the look its a great keyboard http://www.amazon.com/CM-Storm-QuickFire-TK-Mechanical/dp/B00A378L10

You should definitely get a mechanical keyboard, the difference between mechanical and standard rubber dome is night and day. Personally prefer the brown switches (tactile bump but no click), the other main ones are red (no bump no click) and blue (both bump and click). What switches you should get is mostly preference, so go to a store and try them out, but for gaming you probably want brown or red, as blue is best for typing(and annoyingly loud imo).

I can strongly recommend the CM Quickfire TK. It is shorter than a normal keyboard, so it gives you more space for your mouse. Which is something I really like and would never go back to a full length keyboard. It’s shorter because it combined the numpad and arrow keys, which you can switch between with numlock. (There is also the CM QuickFire Rapid, which is pretty much the same keyboard but with only arrow keys and no numpad)

CM Storm QuckFire Rapid-i or TK. http://www.amazon.com/CM-Storm-QuickFire-TK-Mechanical/dp/B00A378L10/

If you don’t mind used you can probably find it for a bit cheaper on /r/mechmarket.

You might be interested in a mechanical keyboard since its an entirely different type of experience than a normal rubber dome/chicklet keyboard. If the 750ti is a hefty investment for you, a mechanical keyboard might not look good in your eyes, but you just have to try one in real life to see how it feels. Check out /r/MechanicalKeyboards to see more.

Also copy-pasting from a previous comment I’ve made:
>If you’ve never tried a mechanical keyboard before, its not simply the “click”, but the feel of the entire typing experience. You will have to try it out to know what I mean. There are many different types of key switches with different amounts of force required to register their presses, different ones that have a tactile bump that tell you when you’ve activated the key, ones with no bump at all, different ones that click when pressed down, combinations of these, and a lot more. Its good to be educated about the different types of key switches before finally investing into a mechanical keyboard, based off of your situation and preferences. Head to /r/MechanicalKeyboards if you want to see people with way too many keyboards and good recomendations. Personally, I’d recommend the Cooler Master Storm Quickfire series here and here, or the popular Poker II from Massdrop. A good mechanical keyboard is definitely a worthy investment, as it will last you for a very long time and you can swap out the keycaps if they get damaged or if you want a different look. Also note that Razer’s mech keyboards are lower quality than most other keyboards due to their special key switches manufactured in China, so don’t trust Razer’s keyboards no matter how flashy they look. You’re better off with literally any other mechanical keyboard.

If you are a frequent computer user, a mechanical keyboard. They feel really amazing to type on, and last forever. the Quickfire TK and the Quickfire Rapid are great no-frills keyboards.

~~you could try the shine 3. it has red backlighting though (others are out of stock) http://www.ncix.com/detail/ducky-dk9087-shine-3-mx-b7-90660-1012.htm~~ nvm. read that you want a full sized board

and the nice thing about the ducky boards is that if you want to swap keycaps to match your theme better, it’s easier to find keycap replacements for it as compared to the corsair

edit: or this http://www.amazon.ca/QuickFire-TK-Compact-Mechanical-Keyboard-Switches/dp/B00A378L10/ if you want to try the alternate layout (a bit harder to swap caps completely with this too like the corsair due to the non-standard bottom row)

the one mentioned by /u/jmkiser33 is a good compromise in size giving you a numpad and arrow keys by just toggling the numlock. it’s also below 100

http://www.amazon.com/CM-Storm-QuickFire-TK-Mechanical/dp/B00A378L10/

unfortunately the only other ones i can think of are >$100

edit: here are some others that are full sized and backlit and below 100

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B009C98NPY/ – Logitech G710+

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823201061 – rosewill board that seems to be oem’d by max keyboards

You don’t really appreciate the different between rubber dome and mechanical switches until you actually make the switch.

I would recommend the CM Storm Quickfire TK. It’s $90 on amazon, and seems like it would suit your needs.

Of course, if you want a cheaper keyboard there are a few other options, such as the Rosewill RK-6000, the Noppoo Lolita Spyder 87 with Kaihl switches, or maybe the AULA Demon King with knockoff blues.

Obviously the Quickfire TK is my recommendation. Keep an eye out on /r/mechmarket and also massdrop for good keyboard deals.

If you are looking for a quiet switch I would recommend cherry mx browns. They are tactile and not clicky, meaning there is a “bump” when you press down and they do not make much noise. The wiki has a ton of resources on which keyboard to buy, etc. If you are looking for something simple and cheap perhaps the CM Storm Quickfire Rapid Tenkeyless (no numpad) would work: ~~http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00A378L10/?tag=pcpapi-20 (edit: wrong link) http://www.amazon.com/Storm-QuickFire-Rapid-Tenkeyless-Mechanical/dp/B0068INSUM ($140)~~ finally fixed: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823129005&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID= ($90)

There’s lots of other ones though.

I am in need of a more compact (“tenkeyless?”) keyboard and don’t mind the feeling of the cheapest membrane ones, but all tenkeyless ones tend to come with mechanical switches. I have only really briefly tried cherry mx reds and they feel too mushy for my taste.

I have been eyeing this one with brown switches:
http://www.amazon.com/CM-Storm-QuickFire-TK-Mechanical/dp/B00A378L10

and this razer one with razer green switches:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KeQM1srk-hY

There is a lot of talk about actuation force on different switches, but I don’t know the force required to actuate a membrane key, so I can’t compare it in my head. I wouldn’t probably want any heavier keys than what membranes are.

Which keyboard / switch type would you recommend for me?

Cool. Didn’t realize they made a stealth variant on those. Not aware of any being sold, but the Quickfire TK w/ MX Browns is at a decent price on Amazon considering they’re usually priced at ~$100. It’s out of stock right now but seems they’ll be getting more in. Price might jump back up once they get stock.

Difference between this and the stealh version are just the keycaps it seems. Do note that if you want the stealth look, you can also get the translucent front printed caps from Max Keyboards. When the lights are off on your board, it’ll look exactly like the Quickfire TK Stealth (though I believe the set comes with all the extra keys even for the non-standard layout Quickfire TK, it would be good to reach out to Max to ensure compatibility).

Here’s an image of a board with the caps and with lights off and with them on

i replied to a similar question recently:

>that’s the best low cost option i believe. other than that there’s the lightsaver at a much higher price tier. there’s also one that will be moving to a group buy stage but will have to be assembled https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/comments/3ac1e8/photos_prototype_plates_arrived_for_the_tk78/

the quickfire tk with browns is sold out but will be getting stock soon according to amazon and is at a really low price of $74 http://www.amazon.com/CM-Storm-QuickFire-TK-Mechanical/dp/B00A378L10/

CM Storm has a backlit mech with volume controls as FN keys under $100.

Steelseries 6gv2 no backlight, but has volume control with FN keys and is mechanical. Beware, the key caps are known to fit loosely and come off easily.

There are some Razer Black Widow mechs in that price area.

I don’t know that many cheap ones, but this one is usually recommended.

I’m sure you could find some even cheaper ones if you looked around, but that one is known to be good.

Hey guys! So I’m looking for a mechanical keyboard that’ll be used primarily for gaming on a new blue themed build. I feel like cherry red switches would probably be the best, but every keyboard I find that has cherry reds has a red trim.
I’m looking to:

Spend less than 150

Buy directly from amazon.com, as in ” ships and sold by amazon.com”

Have a backlight feature on the keyboard

I don’t particularly care about the number pad, or anything besides it having a blue backlight feature and being relatively well built. I was thinking of this keyboard: http://www.amazon.com/CM-Storm-QuickFire-TK-Mechanical/dp/B00A378L10/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1398117074&sr=1-2&keywords=backlit+mechanical+keyboard

I’d love to here some opinions. Thanks guys!
