I’ve done this many times alone with my toddler since she was born. (Moved cross country from PHL to PHX, so many 5 hour flights have been had for visits home and whatnot while my husband has had to work.)

Put the screen in front of them. It’s not like you do it everyday, it won’t hurt your kid for a few hours. You won’t regret it. You can download shows and movies off of Netflix for offline viewing. (My daughter is 16 months now and her favorites on our last plane ride were Shrek, Word Party, Super Why, and Sesame Street.)

Grab a few small toys and make sure your toddler doesn’t play with them until you’re on the plane. Something new and exciting to keep them entertained for awhile! Little fidget toys, matchbox cars, triangle crayons (so they don’t roll) and paper, dolls, books, and LOTS of snacks.

I found an awesome pair of headphones for my daughter on Amazon. Not the best quality, but they work and were perfect for our flight.

I haven’t done long flights, but I do 5 hour flights regularly with my toddler. Download movies and shows for them to watch offline. (Amazon Prime Video and Netflix allows you to do this.) bring small toys that they haven’t played with before. Matchbox cars, dolls, triangle crayons (so they don’t roll) and paper, tablet with games they can play offline. Walk the aisles every so often with them. My daughter also loves these headphones. Not the best sound quality or anything (not like they care lol) but it’s perfect size for their heads and super comfortable. My daughter loved them for watching her shows and listening to music.

And LOTS of snacks. Snacks will be your saving grace. The plane ride is not a time to be picky about what your kid eats. Goldfish, crackers, muffins, cookies, whatever. When you’re stuck on a plane for a long time with an ornery toddler, snacks will be there for you. A godsend.
