I’m super not the expert, it looks like some of the other commenters are saying to keep a bandage on until it heals. However, I think that is much more advice for an open wound and to prevent scarring. If it’s more like a mega-bruise, blood-blister situation, I’d still switch to a much gentler cleanser (ie: cetaphil is what I’ll use to keep a fresh tattoo clean, or when I was taking care of some poison ivy on my arm this summer) and just make sure to keep it moisturized and protected with sunscreen.

I think the cleansers you’re using are too harsh regardless, for any kind of damaged skin. If it’s not an open wound, it’s probably ok to be washing your whole face, very gently and I’d still avoid massaging the bruised area. If it IS an open wound, or you’re worried about scarring, then the hydrocolloid bandages are the way to go.

Short answer is that there’s no one stop shop type of product for this kind of thing.
It’s great that you want to take care of your skin! Everyone’s skin is a little different, so there may be some trial and error in finding what works best for you. Having never used product before, you may want to start with things labeled for sensitive skin just in case.
I’ll loosely break some steps down for you:
1- you’re going to want to find an every day face wash to, at minimum, wash your face every evening. I recommend this one to start out because it’s gentle, not really a fragrance, etc Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser | 20 Fl Oz | Hydrating Face Wash & Body Wash | Ideal for Sensitive, Dry Skin | Non-Irritating | Won’t Clog Pores | Fragrance-Free | Soap Free | Dermatologist Recommended https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07GC74LL5/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_T2ZF1FG32WF13Z9RHY4N

2- this is news to a lot of men, but after you wash your face, you should definitely moisturize. This will help keep your skin hydrated and also can help minimize the appearance of pores. My husband uses and likes this one, but something light should be a good start CeraVe Moisturizing Cream | Body and Face Moisturizer for Dry Skin | Body Cream with Hyaluronic Acid and Ceramides | 19 Ounce https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00TTD9BRC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_MB1YWK8T6NKP9C29F8YA

3- I’m assuming you work outdoors because construction, so you should also use a sunscreen every day. Sounds obvious, but gets overlooked too often. Sun damage will age your skin and cause your pores to appear larger as well.

4- I would get comfortable in a routine with all of that first, but I personally use this clay mask once a week to help clear out around my nose and chin Cetaphil Pro Dermacontrol Purifying Clay Mask With Bentonite Clay for Oily, Sensitive Skin, 3 Oz Jar https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07SDQDMZ4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_1NRYEJTBFBDHE5TDCN9D?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

I can talk about this stuff all day so please message if you need help ☺️ I know it’s a lot and can be overwhelming, so I wish you luck!

I am pretty prone to breakouts as well and I find that using two products every morning has helped out tremendously. I start off with this skin cleanser to remove the excess oil from my face and lightly clean the skin before using this face scrub to clear out my pores completly. I also have a prescribed acne face cream, but find I don’t need to use it that often since I started this routine. What’s great is you can do it in the shower, so I just keep both bottles there and use them in my morning shower routine.

not a problem! i’m glad my comment helped a bit. i’ve always had a bit of skin picking issue in my life…& it ramps up x 50 when on Adderall so I can totally relate to just not being able to stop. it’s like you go into a trance of skin destruction.

My recommendations:

Cleaners…

Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser (USE AM + PM before bed, especially if have makeup on; sometimes I skip this one in the AM and only rinse with water if I’m super oily; also sometimes skip at night if I don’t have makeup on; this is a cheap basic wash that is very gentle on skin)

https://www.amazon.com/Cetaphil-Gentle-Cleanser-Types-Ounce/dp/B07GC74LL5/ref=sr_1_6?crid=Z7HK073AX16V&dchild=1&keywords=cetaphil+face+wash&qid=1627674564&sprefix=cetaphil+%2Caps%2C229&sr=8-6

Dr. Song Benzoyl Peroxide Wash 10% (Use PM Wash #2; I never skip this one at night; also can use in the shower on body acne)

https://www.amazon.com/Dr-Song-Benzoyl-Peroxide-Treatment/dp/B07GJLMK14/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

Moisturizer..

Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion (Use PM Moisturizer; I never skip this one, even if my skin is oily…lack of moisturizing actually makes most skin more oily) https://www.amazon.com/Moisturizing-Moisturizer-Nourishing-Dermatologist-Recommended/dp/B086LK197J/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?crid=331ETIZ9EQ9FY&dchild=1&keywords=cetaphil+moisturizing+lotion&qid=1627674760&sprefix=cetaphil+mo%2Caps%2C233&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUFTRE1YWEg5UVZOVFYmZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTAzNTk1ODEyNVozSThYMEdVNUhKJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTAxMDI5NjgzNDRHWFQ5R1FRUjAyJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==

Suncreeen (Use AM every day after washing, even when only staying indoors; best I’ve found under makeup for my oily, acne-prone skin)- The Face Shop Natural Sun Eco No Shine Hydrating Sun Cream SPF 50++

https://www.amazon.com/Natural-Shine-Hydrating-Cream-SPF50/dp/B00S4DDHVO/ref=cm\_cr\_arp\_d\_product\_top?ie=UTF8.

All of this stuff works good on my oily, acne-prone skin that is also prone to dry flaky areas, especially in the colder months. My skin is pretty damn clear on this routine & when clean from addies. Good luck!

Sure!

This is my routine in order. Specific products at the end.:

Morning after gym / shower:

 1. cleanser everywhere
 2. AHA exfoliant (once every week on fridays) for 10 minutes
 3. Mask (Mondays and Fridays) for 20 minutes
 4. eye repair cream
 5. Retinol on the lines
 6. moisturizer everywhere
 7. sunscreen

Night before bed / after shower:

 1. cleanser
 2. eye repair cream
 3. moisturizer

Products:

 1. Cleanser: CETAPHIL Gentle Skin Cleanser https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07GC74LL5/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
 2. Exfoliant: Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 25% AHA + 2% BHA Exfoliant Peel https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B089973QWM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
 3. Mask: innisfree Pore Clearing Clay Masks with Volcanic Cluster https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08WZRDXK7/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (get these too: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075K72NRW/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1)
 4. Eye repair cream: Cerave Eye Repair Cream https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JJPMXDO/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
 5. Moisturizer: Body Moisturizer by CETAPHIL https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B099N2SLT9/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
 6. Sunscreen: Neutragena SPF 50 https://www.amazon.com/Neutrogena-Fast-Absorbing-Lightweight-Oxybenzone-Free-Protection/dp/B07YG92FC4/ref=sr_1_8?crid=TX9XLH0FV027&keywords=sunscreen+neutrogena+spf+50&qid=1643415980&s=beauty&sprefix=sunscreen+neutrogena+spf+50%2Cbeauty%2C79&sr=1-8

If I need to look my best on friday nights, I do my AHA / Mask and the rest of my routine the 2nd time of the day before I go out.

A couple of notes:

 • The Exfoliant is very expensive ($40) but you use very little of it, so it should last a while.
 • You go through skin cleanser and moisturizer quickly, but it’s cheap.
 • Some people think the eye repair cream is overkill and just expensive moisturizer, but I like it.
 • Don’t wash your face with the same shower sponge as your ass. Everything face is special.
 • moisturizing shower soap.
 • It all takes time. Doing this means being a guy and banging out a 5 minute shower routine is ever. It takes not insignificant time to cover your body in cleanser and moisturizer
 • Some people like the more natural route with olive oil and stuff, but I prefer just buying stuff on Amazon.
 • Cleanser basically looks and feels exactly like Cum and I giggle every time I use it thinking about the old joke about Cum being good for the skin.

Go find the ordinary. It’s cheap. Online or sephora. You want a few general things, most of these can be found at the Ordinary, but some cant (ill specify the brand)

Gentle cleanser (I prefer cetaphil, found at most pharmacies/grocery stores). Link

Niacinamide Serum (vitamin B3) Link
Ascorbic Acid Serum (vitamin C) Link
A humectant (Hyaluronic Acid or Snail Mucin) Link or Link
A moisturizer (I use Cerave) Link
Retinol serum (Vitamin A) Link

and if your skin is super dry maybe an oil like squalane Link

if you’re in the desert, humectants can have the opposite effect (pulling moisture from skin into the environment, so be advised).

I’m doing everything I’m supposed to and things are only getting worse. Has anyone had this problem before? (HORMONAL ACNE, MALE, 14)

At around the same time every morning and night I use Cetaphil facial cleanser solution after washing my face with warm water. I pat my face dry with a clean soft cloth. Afterwards I put on prescribed clindamycin pads in the morning along with a layer of Neutrogena 55 SPF sunscreen. At night I rub a layer of Differin 0.1 on my face along with Cetaphil lotion. In the middle of the day at school I use Cetaphil cleansing pads (the kind you just rub on and don’t have to wash off) and rub another clindamycin pad on my face. I repeat this routine every day and have been since around mid August up until now. I pretty much never touch my face, maybe 3-5 times a week I’ll scratch a part of it out of habit on accident.

I know that things usually get worse before they get better but in mid August there were 3 deep rooted pimples on my right cheek, a couple shallower pimples on my chin, some pimples on my nose, and that was it. Now there are 4 shallower pimples on my right cheek along with 3 other deeper rooted ones, the shallower pimples on my chin turned into 2 Deep rooted ones with 2 shallower ones, my nose has stayed the same, I now have 3 deep rooted pimples just starting to form on my left cheek as of today, and every now and then I still get new pimples that last a few weeks on my lip and my forehead. I’m doing everything I’m supposed to and now instead of hoping that almost all my pimples will be gone by the end of October, I’m now just hoping that all the new damage is reversed by the end of October.

What do I do??? Should I switch to Differin 0.3 or something like that??? I’ve thought about switching to one of those box sets of skincare products from maybe Exposed or something but idek which one’s are the best to choose from. I’m going to ask my mom to set up an appointment with my dermatologist because this is just ridiculous.

Here are all the products I use that are mentioned in this comment:

Most products break me out. I do not know what those products have in common, despite using a spreadsheet to track ingredients. Alcohol and dairy used to break me out, but I think I have moved past that stage, and I am grateful for it.

Through trial and error I have figured out a handful of products that work for me. When I look for new products now I do two things:

 1. I look for FA-safe products. I do not have FA, but I have better luck with FA-safe products than with other products. Simple Skincare Science has a comprehensive list of FA-safe products.
 2. I look for products with minimal ingredients. Fewer ingredients means less chance of irritation.

Here are products I have tried that do not break me out. Products in bold are those that I currently use.

Cleansers

Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser (I use a Target brand dupe)

Garnier Micellar water (pink top)

Moisturizers

Malezia urea moisturizer

Cveenk Aloe Vera gel with HA (Cveenk is out of stock on Amazon; the product I linked looks like it is an identical product from the same manufacturer under a different brand name.)

Hado Labo Skin Plumping Gel

Sunscreen

YADAH Oh My Sun Slush SPF 50+ PA+++

Neutrogena UltraSheer liquid daily facial sunscreen SPF 70 (waterproof; I use this during the summer or when I am exercising)

Nivea sun protect super water gel spf 50

Cerave AM moisturizing lotion spf 30 (stung my eyes, awful white cast)

DRMTLGY Broad Spectrum SPF 45 (stung my eyes)

Hado Labo UV White Gel (stung my eyes)

Actives

Malezia Acne Treatment Gel (2.5% BP)

Differin Facial cleanser with BP

de la cruz sulfur ointment

Clearasil rapid rescue deep treatment pads (contain salicylic acid)

Cosrx AHA 7 Whitehead Power Liquid

Prescriptions

Tretinoin cream

Clindamycin lotion (this is what got rid of my acne. I used it for 2 months. Now I rely on BP to keep the acne away)

Other

Vaseline

Mineral oil

Product name: Up & Up Gentle Skin Cleanser (Target brand; dupe for Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser)

Price (range): $6.69 for 16 oz/473 ml at Target. Cetaphil brand is $9.59 at Target and $11.48 on Amazon.

Country of purchase: USA

Skin info: Fitzpatrick type III. Non-hormonal acne; my skin breaks out from most products I’ve tried. On tret and BP.

Ingredient list: Water, Cetyl Alcohol, Propylene Glycol, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Stearyl Alcohol, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Butylparaben.

Special info: FA safe, fragrance free, oil free. Very short ingredient list.

Experience & opinion: I love this cleanser. It’s not too drying. It does not break me out, which is a miracle in and of itself. I use micellar water to get my water-based sunscreen off, then I use this cleanser to wash my face. The cleanser alone would probably do the trick to remove my sunscreen if I massaged it in long enough; when my micellar water runs out I plan to rely on this cleanser by itself. One bottle goes a long way: I have been using the same bottle for about a year now, washing every night, and the bottle is getting low but it hasn’t run out.

After being prescribed Accutaine (successfully) to clear up my chronic cystic acne, my facial hair started coming in and I’ve been having issues with razor burn and ingrown hairs ever since.

I’ve tried changing things up a few times (tried safety razors and a few different electric clippers and shavers, different cartridge razors for sensitive skin, different shaving creams, etc) and following basic advice, like never shaving against the grain, but nothing seems to have helped and some things have only made things worse.

Currently I wash my face every day in the shower with Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser. I razor shave my head/hair every other day and don’t have any problems with my skin there, but my neck and jawline is a different story. I normally shave my face about every week, sometimes longer, mostly because I’m pretty much afraid to shave now because I know how bad I get “breakouts” after every shave.

I started using Skin Tight Ingrown Hair and Razor Bump Creme on both my face and head immediately after shaving and then twice a day, morning and night as directed, and it seems to help a little but not nearly enough.

I currently use a cartridge razor, Schick for Sensitive Skin and Barbasol for Sensitive Skin. I used Duke Cannon Aftershave for a while, but I wasn’t terribly impressed. We won’t talk about the fallout that using electric trimmers left.

I’d appreciate any help and suggestions! I’m pretty much at my wit’s end and am ready to go see if a dermatologist can help.

The ones on the lips are the worst 🙁

My recommendation is to exfoliate with a brush 3 days a week, on the days that you dont exfoliate use cetaphil face wash

Dont use benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid anymore. Look at all your products and throw everything away that has any alcohol in it.

Use Thayers toner (or any non alcoholic toner) and cetaphil moisturizer(or any non alcoholic moisturizer)

Most importantly try to use a non alcoholic facial sunscreen (works miracles)

Also you should see a dermatologist eventually they have really good topical that must be prescribed

Since everyone’s skin is different and you mentioned hers is normal to acne-prone, I’m thinking *you might want to stick to basic products and well-tolerated ingredients to get started. *
Every routine starts with 3 basic steps: cleanse, treat, and moisturize. Here are some recommendations for each step:

1. Cleanse
– $11 Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser: all-around gentle cleanser that works with pretty much any skin type

 • $9 Cerave Renewing SA Cleanser: great texture, plus salicylic acid (SA) is one of the most researched treatments for acne

 • $8 Panoxyl: benzoyl peroxide cleanser that’s also great for acne

2. Treat: here’s where routines can get pretty specific depending on the concern we want to address (e.g. hyperpigmentation/acne marks, aging, active acne/inflammation, dull skin). For each concern, there are lots of ingredients and products, each one with their own pros and cons (i.e. acids are great and brightening ans exfoliating the skin but can cause irritate it). For a starter routine, I recommend Niacinamide, as it’s a pretty well-studied ingredient that treats many of the concerns listed above, has pretty much no side effects, AND it’s one of the most well-tolerated skincare ingredients.
The Ordinary’s 10% Niacinamide Serum: helps fade acne marks more quickly, brightens skin, accelerates healing time for active acne, and oh so many great benefits…

3. Moisturize
– $12 Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion

Hopefully, this helps you get started but let me know if you have questions or would like links to further reading.

 • Issue: Need help lightening skin. I am Indian (brown skin) and after my accutane treatment, my skin has gotten a lot darker than before. I have some hyperpigmentation from the acne scars but my entire face seems to have gotten darker.

 • Skin type: I think I have combination skin (dry and oily). However, after accutane, the amount of oil secreted in my face has significantly reduced. I still believe I have combination skin. It is also extremely sensitive and I generally avoid alcohols as they cause my skin to get really dry.

 • How long: 1 Year, no issues so far. Skin stays really clear.

 • Anything new: Accutane? But that was a year and a half ago.

 • Your location: California!
