It didn’t break me out but made my face beat red the next day. The niacinamide is at a high percentage in TO niacinamide. I got into diy and niacinamide was on my list of things to make and read a good study about niacinamide showing great results at 4% when its formulated with 2% NAG. It’s suggested use is between 2-5%. I didn’t use any vitamin C when using it either, because it can turn niacinamide into niacin (I think). My skin handled the serum I made just fine and it actually helped with inflammation.
If you decide to try it from TO, it’s cheap. But there are a lot of other niacinamide products out there with a lower percentage. Cerave has a moisturizer with niacinamide and ceramides, and hyaluronic acid. It’s in my cart, I definitely want to try it. CeraVe Facial Moisturizing Lotion PM | 3 Ounce | Ultra Lightweight, Night Face Moisturizer | Fragrance Free https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00365DABC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_HoWIDb8ZF0QSC
A month ago I was reading about niacinamide and azelaic acid because people seem to have good results with one or the other, or both. I have cystic acne and have been looking for something to help. I have read that niacinamide increases keratinocytes, and azelaic acid decreases the production of keratin. I made a post about it, but nobody ever had an answer. I get nodules and cysts on my jawline and neck, so I don’t put as much niacinamide in that area. But I wish I knew more about this because so many people do use niacinamide and if it makes acne worse, that’s not good.
·
Your best bet would be going to a dermatologist and getting a prescription for retin-a (trentinoin generic) or finding a legit place to buy it online. If you can’t do that then bare minimum use sunscreen and a night moisturizer. Cerave is cheap and does a good job.
·
Jokes aside, I actually don’t use aftershave. I use CeraVe PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion and then apply my acne cream after. For fragrance, I just use cologne. Most of the Aftershave stuff breaks out my face, unfortunately.
·
Cerave PM, in my opinion, is the holy grail of niacinamide moisturizers. You can get it from amazon.
·
No problem! I have combination skin too. Most of my face is normal, the places where I have rosacea is dry, and my T-zone is either normal or oily. I use Cerave PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion if you’re looking for a good moisturizer. I use it in the morning too, not just at night. I find this moisturizer to be very lightweight and it also has niacinamide which can alleviate rosacea symptoms like irritation and inflammation.
Having Crohn’s disease must be tough. I have a cousin whose wife has it too. I honestly don’t know too much about the disease or what it’s like to be immunosuppressed. All I can say is to take any recommendations I make with a grain of salt. Are there any skincare products you have to avoid? I would ask your GP (or a derm if you have one) what’s safe to use.
·
Your routine is practically the same as the routine I started with after I first found SCA. My skin is also combination oily and dry. For me, what helped my face was replacing the mineral oil with sunflower oil, adding an AHA to my evening routine (it did the most to help my breakouts), adding CeraVe PM lotion to my routine before the CeraVe cream, and putting Vaseline on my face before bed. I also only use Stridex once per day because more than that irritates my skin and drys it out too much. Everything I changed or added has helped, but the best addition to my routine is honestly the Vaseline. It makes my skin so plump and soft when I wake up in the morning. It helps my skin look brighter and it’s minimized a deep forehead wrinkle I’ve had since I was a teen.
·
I’ll definitely consider the CeraVe! Now that you mention it, I don’t really know exactly why I was so put off by it… some sort of illogical aversion I guess. Is it this one?
http://www.amazon.com/CeraVe-Moisturizing-Facial-Lotion-Ounce/dp/B00365DABC
Also, is it okay to use on oily skin?
·
My fav recommendation for moisturizer for PIH is Cerave PM because it has niacinamide which helps lgihten and brighten skin.
·
It sounds like you have post-inflammatory hyper pigmentation. Try using CeraVe PM moisturizing lotion. You can find this at Walgreens, Wal-mart, etc. The niacinamide it contains will help speed up the healing process/fade the mark faster. As far as concealing goes, are you comfortable using makeup? a dot of concealer would hide it nicely.
·
Late response to your thread but if you’re looking for well known/rated product that contains niacinamide (http://www.amazon.com/CeraVe-Moisturizing-Facial-Lotion-Ounce/dp/B00365DABC) I changed for the cerave in the tub (same one the other guy in this thread said he’s using) but just for that ingredient. And remember you need to be chill on your skin while on accutane so try to limit it to moisturizers and cleansers. Luckily cerave products (and i hear cetaphil as well) are good for that.
·
Thanks 🙂 I was browsing other products and saw this one http://www.amazon.com/CeraVe-Moisturizing-Facial-Lotion-Ounce/dp/B00365DABC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1428931077&sr=8-1&keywords=CeraVe+PM+lotion+3+fl+oz
Have you ever tried it or heard something about it?
·
Perhaps Amazon? http://www.amazon.com/CeraVe-Moisturizing-Facial-Lotion-Ounce/dp/B00365DABC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1428575651&sr=8-1&keywords=cerave+pm It says it’s available for shipping to select countries outside the U.S, maybe your country is one. 🙂

If you have this one that says “ultra lightweight” you have the new formulation, not the old.

I’ve heard caffeine is great for underneye puffiness and bags. Also people don’t realize but it is caused by fluids and if you massage, you tube facial lymphatic massage, you can literally drain that fluid and massage it down into the rest of your circulatory system.
You will see better results with massage from removing that built up fluid (allergies, poor sleeping positions, etc.) than creams… though creams help. Caffeine creams help with puffiness but can be drying, thus you’d need a good moisturizing undereye cream.
Some recs:
- am & pm facial lymphatic massage 5-15 minutes. Seriously you will see your bags and dark circles instantly decrease. That fluid has to go somewhere… I learned these in school and I give them to my bf when he looks tired or during allergy season. Always massage DOWNWARD TOWARD HEART & CHEST. Put some oil on your face (non-comegenic) for some slip.
- the ordinary caffeine solution cheap
- drunk elephant frambroos to help with resurfacing and making pores smaller/smoother skin. This product is the shit. Ask Sephora for samples bc it’s $90 and you prob are like f$&k no until you wake up the next morning. Then you will find a way to save that 90 I tell ya.
- the ordinary Argenine liquid Botox in a bottle. Good for those forehead wrinkles/cheap/extremely effective and hard to get your paws on. A sleeper product nobody talks about.
- Cera ve pm a good all around moisturizer with a load of niacinamide which just gives your skin some oomph. A lightweight moisturizer. Get it at Walmart and print yourself a $2 off coupon at cera ve website. It will be like $6
- find yourself a good mineral spf. no coconut derivatives
- melazepam one of the best things you can do for your skin. Scientifically proven to be as effective as Retin a when used in conjunction with glycolic acid treatments. It lightens sun spots and just brightens your complexion overall. It’s $12 on amazon and it’s the highest concentration you can possibly get! It blows the ordinary azelic acid 10% out of the water and any cureology formulation 🙂 (its 20%) it reduces inflammation, redness, and decreases keratinization which prevents the build up of skin.
That’s all I’ve got for now, some detox masks and maybe a good basic toner like thayers alcohol free witch hazel (rose, aloe, or cucumber are your only alcohol free options and you find them at target for $10-12).
I wish I could give you a facial and let you see just how big of a difference getting that fluid out of there can make. !!
·
CVS ran a similar 30% deal a week ago. I got excited and stocked up on things, then realized Amazon had the same items for much less than the CVS sale price. Example below.
Cerave PM at CVS (before 30% discount)
same product on Amazon
·
I’ve been using CeraVe PM lotion, and that works well for me. It’s not like, OMG AMAZING, but it keeps me moisturized without being greasy/oily, and it doesn’t break me out. (PSA: this stuff is apparently like 80% off the normal price right now on Amazon if you get it in a Prime Pantry box.)
I tried the Hada Labo gel cream before the CeraVe. I liked it too, but it left me feeling a little bit … stickier? So now I’ve just been using it for my hands and neck.
Also, if you haven’t already, you should definitely check out r/skincareaddiction. There’s tons of great product recommendations and helpful people over there!
·
I really like Cerave Moisturizer PM It was around $8 on Amazon.
·
You’re right, there are lots of options! Here is a guide to the different lotions and moisturizers.
https://www.reddit.com/r/SkincareAddiction/comments/3ir4zg/review_quick_guide_to_different_cerave/?st=J45S5XOE&sh=c33319b0
I personally like the pm lotion. I use it in the am and pm. It has ceramides, niacinamide, and hyaluronic acid. Here’s a link to it on amazon
https://www.amazon.com/CeraVe-Moisturizing-Facial-Lotion-Ounce/dp/B00365DABC
For a cleanser, I personally use the hydrating one because I generally find foaming cleansers too drying. But some people prefer the foaming. You can look at reviews to help make your decision
Also, be sure to pay close attention to your skin when you start using them. Cerave is probably the most popular brand on this sub, but there are still a lot of people whom have skin that don’t agree with it. If your skin does have adverse reactions, it will probably be due to the fatty alcohols or niacinamide. It’s a great product but some people are sensitive to those ingredients
·
Have you ordering it from Amazon?
·
Looks like it’s just out of stock edit: nevermind this is the lightweight version. I’m having a hard time finding it on Amazon too. The one I found was $34, I bet they’re just low on stock right now.
It’s also available from dermstore. I’m sure your friend could find it from a CVS, Walgreens, or Target too.

A good number of ‘scripts lol
Metoprolol, lisinopril, amlodipine, clonidine, duloxetine, escitalopram
Face: tea tree oil face wash, salicylic acid spot treatment on acne, and salicylic based lotion. Been using this routine for a little over a year.
When it popped up about 5 months ago, but wouldn’t go away, I started using cerave around the top of eye lid, under the brow.
I also drink plenty of water and live in a humid climate. I don’t drink very often. Maybe a beer a week or two, tops. My other eyelid area isn’t affected. Thank you for answering!
·
K your gonna want a moisturizer. This one is good for me https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00365DABC/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glc_i_3HANDAR3Y3R3NWFPDRF9

Same situation over here! CeraVe was made really popular by TikTok so they’ve been sold out in many places for awhile. I haven’t really seen them in full stock since the beginning of the year tbh. I really love the CeraVe SA Body Wash but it sucks to not be able to find it anywhere either.
Have you tried looking on Amazon? I’m from the US but I see that the CeraVe PM Moisturizer and CeraVe Baby Cream are on stock on there.
·
From Amazon UK! It’s available with Prime shipping, for example here 🙂

>as far as professional treatments, is that something that is too early to explore as a 20 year old?
I think for something like indented acne scarring, it’s better to get them treated early – the younger you are, the quicker the healing process should be, and they might be easier to treat if they haven’t been around for a while. This is definitely something to discuss with your derm though or research further – I’m not an expert on professional treatments at all
>Last do you have an AHA you would recommend
I wouldn’t use an AHA if you’re still trying the Veltin, but if you aren’t using it:
CosRx AHA 7 Liquid ($14.40 for 100ml) – 7% glycolic acid
Alpha Skin Care 10% Glycolic Lotion ($16.99 for 120ml)
Silk Naturals AHA Toner ($8.95 for 120ml) – 8% lactic acid
Stratia Soft Touch AHA ($14 for 50ml) – 10% mandelic acid
Garden of Wisdom 2% Mandelic Acid Tonic ($12.95 for 30ml)
Garden of Wisdom 5% Mandelic Acid Serum ($18.90 for 30ml)
Keep in mind that in terms of strength, glycolic acid is the strongest (generally), mandelic acid is the gentlest (generally) (also keep in mind %)
>and a gentle moisturizer as fresh aloe is my go to as of now but it isnt always practical
Hah I love fresh aloe but it’s like trying to wrangle snot
·
In the US you can buy it on Amazon. I think this is the PM moisturizing lotion we’re talking about here

Hi AB,
Just posted this in SCA and got amazing advixe there. However, I wanted to get as much advice as possible from as many sources, so I’m posting here as well!
I’m so confused and I have no idea where to start, but I really want to start taking care of my skin cause i really dislike it the way it is right now. I’ve been doing my routine for years but nothing has helped.
Little bit about me and the routine:
I’m 20, and male. I have kinda oily skin by nature but religiously make sure my face is clean. Live in SoCal, if that affects skincare at all.
My current routine for the past 5 years almost:
Morning:
Full shower including hair every morning without variance.
Moisturize with Suave advance therapy lotion
Night:
- Neutrogena deep clean facial cleanser: I use two squirts worth to thoroughly wash my face
2.Clean and Clear Deep Clean Exfoliator: two pea size drops, rub my face with it for 15 secs, the wash off
Up and Up 10% benzoyl peroxide: pea size amount for each cheek, forehead, and nose/around the mouth
CeraVe PM moisturizer: liberal amount on each area of my face
I get flareups for no reason and I have a lot of scarring because I pop pimples a lot. What do I do to stop these flareups and fade my scarring to have something that resembles clear skin? Any product recommendations and advice for my routine and how to achieve this would be immensely appreciated. Thank you so much!

This is the new one and has the ingredients in one of the pictures 🙂

I have oily skin and I generally use the CeraVe PM lotion, sometimes layer it with a Vitamin C serum. It has anti-aging compounds now that I need them.
Before this I used the Cerave Moisturizing Cream nightly for years. Still my favourite. I use Hada Labo light lotion in the daytime.
Looked up the Nivea moisturizer you mentioned, it’s formulated for combination skin and has no SPF. So why not try it?
I also really like the Nivea creme, bit thick for daytime but soothing and moisturizing when used overnight.

Best Budget lotions with tons of good actives in.
you can find it at walmart or any other supermart.

Wow, thank you so much for taking the time to give a detailed response. It’s sort of sad knowing that people here care more and will give details about things more than PAYING a dermatologist who just wants to give you harsh products and send you on your way.
I will definitely be taking a peak at r/AsianBeauty as I think you’re very on track with how my skin is and acts. Heck, I’m with most Asians as well when it comes to alcohol, my face will become even more flushed instantly!
I’m really liking the routine you have suggested and well try this as I look around on the other sub. I think an issue I have to curb is my lack of motivation after so many years to do something. I try things, they fail, I get depressed and give up and just moisturize/clean once a day and that’s it with products probably not helping me or even possibly causing issues with my skin (no doubt my cleanser as non-harsh as it is, still causes my skin to inflame and get little patches of red irritation).
May I ask if:
was the lotion you were talking about? I only could find this one with all 3 important compounds you mentioned and this one which as SPF with zinc (good for red skin I hear?)
Lastly, if you don’t mind answering:
1) Are you familiar with stuff like evening primrose oil, hemp seed oil ect.? High omega 6 fatty acid stuff, supposedly anti-inflammatory? I used primrose oil to no avail besides getting some moisturizing effects from it, and I think my heavy use of it over two months led to some blowback with more redness and odd patchy dry scaling occurring that lasted a few days, but I’m not sure that was the cause. If primrose didn’t work, could hemp work, or most of those types of oils doing basically the same thing and isn’t worth looking at any further if I already used one?
2) In addition to the routine, are you familiar with products like:
It’s categorized as a female product, but it seems like something that can perhaps help mask/tone down the redness a bit while providing some SPF. Seems to have things such as peptides, niacin, vitamins A, C, B, E, hyaluronic acid, and hydrolyzed collagen along with anti-oxidants and exotic natural botanicals. I’ve never worn this type of stuff before, and although it seems to be for girls maybe just a light bit that matches my skin tone and remove a few shades, while not being harsh on skin and giving SPF would be beneficial while helping me not feel so bad when my face flushes when I’m out and about from spicy foods, or heat ect.
Anyways, thank you again, your help means a lot.

There’s no need to apologize! I love getting into a good discussion, especially if it’s about skincare products!
The Rosette Ceramide gel is similar to the Cerave PM lotion. Ok, not really because the texture and smell are completely different but they’re both good basic moisturizers for sensitive skin barriers. I’ll make a comparison table for the two products if that’s ok with you!
Cerave PM Lotion | Rosette Ceramide Gel | |
---|---|---|
Texture | Has a light lotion texture like how its name implies. Smooth, white, sinks in flawlessly with no sticky finish | A gel texture. Smooth, transparent, also sinks in quickly BUT has a sticky finish. Expect to wait a while before it goes away |
Smell | No smell | Maybe it’s just mine but when I first opened it I thought I opened a bottle of Elmer’s Glue. It doesn’t smell as strong if you use a small amount. No one else had noted this. |
Recommendation | You can use it in both your AM and PM routine. It isn’t sticky and is a great moisturizer for its price tag. I had overexfoliated skin one time and this is one of the few products that didn’t burn on application. | Because its very sticky finish, I can’t recommend it for AM. I noticed that if I don’t wait at least 5-10 minutes for the product to dry up, my sunscreen pills. I ended up using it solely in my PM routine as a last step moisturizer/sleeping mask. Other people have done the same thing and found great success. I also like to note that this didn’t break me out and didn’t burn when I had sensitive skin either. It helps repair the skin barrier but after your skin recovers, it becomes very boring to use. |
Price | $7.02 for 89ml | $11.89 for 80g (eBay is more expensive so I purchased mine off Amazon) |
TDLR; It’s not a grail but not exactly a fail either. I would recommend if you accidentally overexfoliated your skin and wanted a gentle moisturizer to speed up the recovery process.
·
I had got Cerave PM from Amazon.co.uk though – it is only £9.99 with Prime.
·
For moisturizer, here are my recommendations:
* Cerave PM
* Hada Labo Gel Cream
Both are oil-free and fragrance-free and have gel-cream consistencies. They also have great ingredients. For sunscreen, I recommend this PC Suncreen. I’d layer the moisturizer underneath if you have dry skin though. Hope this helps!
·
To help with the hyperpigmentation, you should buy products with niacinamide, AHAs and vitamin C. I don’t know any Portuguese brands, but I have 2 AHAs, 1 from Paula’s Choice and 1 from Alpha Hydrox (this one is much cheaper). There are tons of vitamin C serums on amazon, I don’t really know any good brands cause I’m not using a vit C serum atm.
As for niacinamide, it should be pretty easy to find a product containing it. I know Cerave has a moisturizer that contains niacinamide.
·
The sidebar has good moisturizer recommendations if you want to read up on them here. The Cerave Cream is a fan favorite.
I have my mom using Cerave PM due to niacinamide to help her lighten her sun spots, but it is all around a good start moisturizer also. Cerave is available in most major drug stores in the USA.
I know you didn’t ask, but if your mom is getting sunburned a lot she should probably be using a sunscreen in the morning.
Do you say USA/India because you have someone who can ship things to India? If that’s the case Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence SPF 50 PA++++ is a great sunscreen that you can buy off Amazon.
If you can only get things in stores, I know Target carried La Roche-Posay which is a brand that has a wide variety of sunscreens. Like this one.
That’s my two cents!
·
Thank you
What do you think about this one?
·
What has your doctor prescribed please? It’s quite normal to try two or more prescription products before hitting the right one, we are all different. 4% nicotinamide (Nicam) and 15% or 20% azelaic acid are probably the gentlest, nicotinamide AKA niacinamide is more moisturising than drying with regular use.
I don’t think that Clarins cleanser is bad at all, assuming you are not sensitive to it. If you have not used for a week or two without using the scrub you won’t know what effect it is having, positive or negative. In general melting gel cleansers are non drying as you have found and I find them very gentle (mild rosacea/ eczema/ dermatitis). The manufacturer of the emulsifier system that creates the ‘melting gel’ effect claims it is moisturising. IMO stick with it because you should only patch test and change one product at a time.
Never use granular scrubs on delicate or inflamed facial skin, too harsh. That goes double for a body scrub since body skin is thicker and more resilient than face so scrubs tend to be rougher. Use a chemical exfoliant – see the AHA/ BHA mega reviews is in the sidebar. AHAs are more moisturising and water soluble so can only exfoliate clean skin, BHAs are drying but oil soluble so can penetrate down into the pore.
Moisturisers … you have the option of a combined moisturiser/ sunscreen or two separate products worrying about sunscreen only when we hit spring. One option is CeraVe PM lotion which has 4% niacinamide and ceramides which help strengthen the skin barrier. If you prefer a gel style moisturiser see the moisturiser mega reviews in the sidebar. I’m not the sunscreen guru around here but the reason I mentioned it in the middle of winter is that zinc oxide is also anti microbial and soothing/ calming so ideal for those with acne.
Diet need concentrating on consistently, oftentimes the symptoms you can see are ‘the straw that broke the camels back’. A healthy skin barrier keeps water in, bacteria and irritants out. You can’t make healthy skin cells without a balanced and varied diet, and skin grows from the bottom up so the cells you see were made weeks ago.
HTH!
·
I use the ultra lightweight version. Recommended by my derm. CeraVe PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion | Night Cream with Hyaluronic Acid and Niacinamide | Ultra-Lightweight, Oil-Free Moisturizer for Face | 3 Ounce https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00365DABC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_fabc_Ax-.FbCSH55GR?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
It won’t break you out!! Way better than an old school night cream!
And oils! Mix oils into your routine! They hydrate and absorb quickly without breaking you out!
