I have oily/combo skin, acne, sensitive/rosacea prone (getting the picture?) and I love using Cerave’s hydrating cleanser. It’s 8.38 on Amazon (great way to get it if you have prime). I don’t like spending lots of money on a cleanser especially since you wash it right off. This cleans my skin, leaves it feeling hydrated (doesn’t strip the moisture barrier) without making me more oily. Let me know if you have more questions, I love talking about skin care.

Also you can usually print off a $2 coupon from cerave’s website. The cerave cleanser has last me over 3 months and I don’t think I’m half way through yet.

Its the Hydrating Cleaner, instead of the Foaming Facial Cleanser.

I personally use the foaming one, since I have oily skin, so I need the stronger cleanser. But it seems you may have dryer skin and might benefit from the gentler hydrating cleanser.

Congrats on starting! I wouldn’t worry too much about trying to kickstart it now – Accutane (as you suggest) takes awhile to start working. It has to build up the dosage in your system. You will start noticing the effects of dryness and your skin producing oil less and less soon if you haven’t already. What dosage are you on and for how long?

EDIT: I just thought of something else too, you could try using a Hydrating Cleanser as well. Just be sure you continue to monitor your skins dryness.

if you’re trying to maximize bang for buck washing off your actives is probably not the way to go. I’d switch to a gentle cleanser like cerave or an oil cleanser and follow with an exfoliant that I leave on– maybe Corsrx AHA/BHA?

>I checked the FAQ, but I think the link is broken (on mobile).

Yeah, there’s a shitty mobile bug right now – check out this post for some workarounds! If you want, you could also add your information to the bug reports on /r/redditmobile – this one is the most recent thread I believe

If you can get it to work, the ScA routine is a great resources, but I’ll include the important bits in this comment

> I’m 29 (nearly 30) and I have zero skin care routine. I have a face wash (Simple brand foaming cleanser), but that’s it.

I mean, that’s a skincare routine! More than I had before I got into skincare tbh

Does your cleanser leave your skin feeling dry, tight, or squeaky clean? If so, I’d start by trying out a gentler cleanser.

Cleanser recs:

If your cleanser leaves your skin feeling soft and kinda moisturized, good! Don’t change things up if there’s no need.

Next step would be moisturizer – what kind of moisturizer you prefer is totally personal preference, so feel free to play around with it till you find something you love! Use a moisturizer that leaves your skin feeling moisturized for a while afterwards, doesn’t sting or cause other irritation, and doesn’t break you out.

Moisturizer recs:

The last part of a basic routine is sunscreen. Sunscreen is important, you know why sunscreen is important, but it’s even more important if you’re planning on adding any acne treatments – many increase photosensitivity, so it’s a good idea to find one you like to use.

Add new products one at a time and try them out for a week or two before introducing the next. That way you have time to properly evaluate whether a product is working for you (i.e. not causing acne, irritation, whatever.) Take it slow! Find products you love! You may hate all those recs, and that’s totally okay – use stuff you like to use 🙂

After you’ve had your routine goin for a while, you may find that your acne clears up! Sometimes a good cleanse & moisturize routine helps your skin be the healthiest it can be. But sometimes you need an acne treatment like BHAs, benzoyl peroxide, azelaic acid, retinoids, etc. I think the two first stops on the acne treatment train are BHAs and benzoyl peroxide – both are drying, so it’s important to have a good moisturizer; BP increases photosensitivity, so it’s important to use sunscreen. Pick whichever one sounds more interesting to you, introduce it slowly (2x a week, slowly increasing in frequency based on how your skin feels – you may end up using it once daily, once every other day, or less frequently); and in the case of BP, you may prefer to use it as a wash-off mask (this method reduces irritation but studies show it can be as effective as leaving it on.)

BHA recs:

BP recs:

Your routine may end up looking something like:

AM:

  • Cleanse – rinse with water or use your Cleanser

  • Moisturize – if needed

  • Sunscreen

PM:

  • Cleanse

  • Active – BHA or BP (daily, every other day, or less frequently) (if using BP as a rinse off mask, it could come before cleansing if you prefer)

  • Moisturize

I hope this was a sufficient tl;dr of the various wiki pages! I know it’s a lot but I wanted to cover all your bases. Remember to go slow with everything – skincare is a marathon, not a race! One product at a time, and if something doesn’t work for you, drop it! Your routine may end up looking different from that sample routine, and that’s totally ok – just wanted to give you an idea of what it could look like 🙂

Help! Nicotinamide Oral vs Serum?

Skin Type: Oily,Had acne to years but never seriously educated myself on skincare. Decided on Nicotinamide but is there a difference to taking it orally vs using a serum? Heard there are better options for directly treating acne but I have some scars and open pores I want to treat as well.

Completely new to skincare game, I have a bunch of small pimples/white heads and red areas across face but usually not giant pimples (probably terms for this I don’t know). Should I take something else? Anything with Nicotinamide other than cleanser? ANYY suggestions, recommendations are Hugely appreciated thanks.

I have combination skin so I can relate!

I would suggest getting a simple skin care routine example: 1. Gently cleanse 2. Tone 3. Moisturizer/spf/acne treatments.

Some cleansers that are good are cetaphil (I’ve tried this and hated it, it made my face so oily) and the one I like a lot and use personally is Cerave Hydrating cleanser it has ceramides and hyaluronic acid to help repair skins natural barrier.

A toner I’d recommend would be Thayers Witch Hazel it’s alcohol free. A toner is a topical astringent that helps cleanse, moisturize and restore skins ph balance.

Now I would recommend you try a gel moisturizer for the day or try and find a light weight spf you like. I use to use Clean and Clear Morning Burst Hydrating Gel Moisturizer, it does have fragrance which can be irritating to skin.

A spf you could try would be the Olay Complete All Day UV Moisturizer spf 15 sensitive skin it’s light weight and doesn’t make my face super greasy. Spf is essential for preventing any acne scars from getting worse and obviously help prevent sun damage.

At night you may need a better moisturizer, I use some things from Andalou naturals and like them a lot but they’re about 20 dollars from Amazon so that may be out of your budget. You can try the gel at first (for night time use and if you don’t like it, you can try and find something else).

For acne treatments I recommend you try salicylic acid daily. So I recommend you try 1% daily at night and before you apply your moisturizer. If that’s not strong enough you can try 2%. Yes to tomatoes has a good skin repair treatment I use to use a lot. Salicylic acid will help with blackheads and redness.

For cystic acne you can try adding a Benzoyl peroxide cream 5% and use that all over the face once or twice a week if that doesn’t work you can try a sulfur mask. That helped with my cystic acne. Acne free has one. I would only use the sulfur masks once or twice a week.

I don’t really use this anymore, I’ve started using differin gel for my only acne treatment. Differin gel is the only thing that’s worked for my cystic acne. I’ve tried OCM, salicylic acid, BP, antibiotics nothing worked.

Remember to treat skin gently and don’t overkill it with various strengths of acne medication. You may have purging when you start a new routine this is normal and can last a few weeks. Everyone’s skin is different so these may or may not work for you.

Stick with the CeraVe HYDRATING cleanser; it’s NON-foaming and has a creamy milk consistency (green label).

I think the Bioderma Sensibio H2O micellar water could be great product for you! You could also try a double cleanse: face oil cleanser + face wash. Don’t be scared of all oils! I know it sounds scary putting oil on your face but think of it this way: your skin is already producing oil, sebum. It’s just producing too much of it. But using oils is beneficial, even on acne prone skin: 1. oil attracts oil which is why it breaks down makeup so well (makeup is pretty much made of oil); 2. many contain nutrients that your skin is missing or have antioxidants that protect your skin; and 3. they add a layer of protection to your moisture barrier, particularly if you use any “actives” which are chemically exfoliating skin off your face (tretinoin turns skin cell over, BHA dissolves oil on skin surface and within pore, etc.).

Here’s a list of acne-safe face cleanser oils – the Koreans and Japanese prob make the best ones since they’re the folks that started the double cleanse. Here’s why rosehip seed oil is good for acne-prone skin (Acne-prone skin tends to have a low % of linoleic acid and high % of oleic acid in the sebum. It’s thought that these low levels could be one of the things causing acne.) and here’s info on beneficial oils for acne prone skin.

And if you can eat whatever you want and still have clear skin, you’re one lucky person!!

Hi guys I have very dehydrated and flaky skin that does get oily through the day. I browsed the sidebar and looked through a bunch of popular posts and I’ve selected some products that I thought would probably work.

Anyways I have CC’s on my forehead and chin which are really difficult to get rid of.

My routine now is:

AM

  • The Body Shop Vitamin E Hydrating Toner
  • The Body Shop Vitamin E Moisture Protect Emulsion SPF 30
  • (I don’t use cleanser in the morning anymore because my skin is already so dry)

PM

  • L’Occitane Immortelle Precious Cleansing Foam
  • Stridex Maximum Pads with Salicylic Acid
  • The Body Shop Vitamin E Hydrating Toner
  • The Body Shop Tea Tree Oil
  • The Body Shop Vitamin E Moisture Cream

But I understand that Redditors aren’t very big fans of the bodyshop and I plan on changing out these products for these instead:

CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser

Paula’s Choice 2% BHA (SALICYLIC ACID) GEL

The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution

The Ordinary Buffet

Pixi Glow Peel Pads

and ConvaTec DuoDERM Extra Thin CGF Dressings if I pop a CC.

What do you think guys? any other recommendations?

Well i took the leap and ordered these products:

Cleanser

Moisturizer AM

Moisturizer PM

Exfoliation

I figure thats probably a good starting point right? I figure my routine would be

AM

  1. Wash with water / cleanser

  2. Moisutrizer and since it already has sunscreen I’m ready to rock and roll

PM (after shower)

  1. cleanser

  2. Moisturize with the PM

  3. Exfoliate before bed

What do you think?

I’ve been using clindamyacin in the AM (and differin in the PM) for the past few months, and haven’t experienced any burning. I think it’s supposed to be used before moisturizer, but maybe you can double check with your derm.

My derm recommended using the clindamyacin in the morning after using a mild cleanser to wash my face, and also advised that I start with only using it a couple times the first week, every other day for a couple weeks after that, and then and every day. (I use this in the morning and this before bed).

She also recommended that I stop using any other harsh products (no AHAs, BP, etc.) I only supplement with a gentle exfoliating scrub a couple times a week, and a clay mask once a week.

I wait about 5-10 minutes before applying a moisturizer and makeup (if I’m wearing any that day).

Hum I see what you mean. I’m checking out what are my options on CeraVe on amazonUK and there are a few with same/similar name. The main difference is, like, one is 12oz and the other is 8oz. What’s oz? can’t seem to find any info on that and what would you recommend?

There’s this 12oz one that got an award or something and there’s this 8oz one with a lot of good reviews.

I think you need to revamp your entire skin routine to resolve this. Rule #1, be gentle, not only in exfoliation methods whether those be physical or chemical, but also you should pay attention to the chemicals you are putting on your face (ie products that are conflicting each other and if anything you’re putting on your face is even what you need).
I would suggest washing with CeraVe for dry skin (it’s inexpensive, super gentle, feels great!). Use a Konjac sponge if you don’t have a Clarisonic (if you do use a Clarisonic only use the softest level of brush head and maybe only do it once a day properly meaning use a lot of water and plenty of cleanser to get the proper slip going on to not over aggravate your skin).
Only use mildly warm water, never hot, do not ever scrub your skin. Just gently exfoliate if doing physical exfoliation. You will need to do some form of gentle exfolation to remove the dead skin regularly.
If you wear make up start doing double oil cleansing. If you do not wear make up just ignore this sentence lol.
When you’re done washing your face if you’re going to bed: get an antioxidant serum to help support your skin, then layer a very good moisturizer, and then a “sealer” so a face cream that works that’s heavier on top of that, maybe even add a few drops of oil to your final cream layer.

Go to bed: wake up, wash gently, pat dry, anti oxidant serum, daytime SPF at least 20 or more. If you find your SPF is too drying then you need to search for one that has some oil in it probably. I suggest using Supergoop Mineral for that.

I know it sounds like a lot but it really isn’t. The main thing is just getting your products lined up and then wash/dry/apply. It just takes a few minutes, I promise, and your skin will look amazing.

If your skin can tolerate it- I’d try adding some AHA’s to your routine also like a glycolic acid treatment a few times a week.

Routine Help:

I’m speaking for my 20 year old brother who has normal-dry skin, with constant breakouts of large blackheads and some (seemingly) cystic spots as well (chin area).

I set him up with:

CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser – AM / PM Washing

CeraVe SA lotion – AM / PM Post washing

and lotions for day / night:

Day

Night

It’s been three days, and he is already saying his skin is feelings more hydrated and “refreshed”.

Is there anything else I can add to this or take away, to set him up with? I also plan on putting in a micellar water in there as well.

Our goal is to get him as cleared up as possible for a trip to France in December. I’d post a pic of his skin but he won’t like that.

What suggestions can I pass along to him about shaving, in conjunction with a routine?

We’ve covered washing pillow cases, towels, wash cloths, too.

How is my routine looking though? I know I have mostly western products I apologize.

Hmm, that one doesn’t seem too bad. Although seems like it could be a little harsh. A lot of people I’ve spoken with on Accutane have had good success with the CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser [CosDNA] [Amazon] (including me) and I swear by this stuff. Maybe switch it out for a month and see how it works for you? My skin is very sensitive and it’s pretty gentle for me.

Theres also a FAQ that has some pretty good moistuizers that have been gathered by users here, you could also try some of those if you’d rather.

I’m on 0.04% and am a very fair skinned female (Celtic and Nordic descent) living in California. Even though I’m not typically outside for more than 20% of my day, I still wear a higher SPF/PA++++ because with the tretinoin the risk of sun damage is significantly increased. Any time you leave the house during the day or sit next to a window, you’re being exposed to UV of some sort. Do you drive to work? Walk to the store? It may not seem like it, but all those little instances add up. Plus, if you’re wearing a chemical sunscreen and not reapplying, it could be entirely broken down by the time you take your lunch break or leave work.

When I started on tretinoin, I had to go very slowly. Even every other night could get to be too much. I’d notice that with specific products (LaRoche Posay Helios sunscreen) my face felt like it was burning on contact, but there was no additional redness. I would also break out far worse when my skin was in that state. I’d damaged my moisture barrier by over-doing the tretinoin, not moisturizing enough, and not staying hydrated.

I also noticed that with the 0.04%, and recent hormonal changes, my skin didn’t like oils anymore. A little Argan or Jojoba here and there is ok for me now, but I had to stop them entirely for at least a month before my skin cleared everything.

You’re on 0.08%, which is twice the strength of my script. I think you may have dehydrated your skin and damaged your moisture barrier. The CeraVe PM may not be enough right now. From looking at your routine, it seems as though you’re over-cleansing with the foaming wash and Clairsonic. Maybe try the CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser in the AM or just rinse with water in the AM and use the CeraVe Hydrating at night.

Try stopping the Retin-A for two nights, then do every third night for a week or two, then every other night. I would also back off of the manual exfoliation (Clairsonic) and clay/charcoal masks until the breakouts clear up. With a higher concentration tretinoin in combination with the azelaic acid in the AM, your skin is probably really sensitive now.

I know I recommended the Biore Aqua Riche earlier, but after reading your routine I recommend a more hydrating sunscreen like Elta MD or my new favorite Korean Jelly Sunscreen.

I also highly recommend taking a D3 supplement with some fish oil supplements in the morning and a calcium supplement with dinner. These seem to have helped me a lot, along with taking a much more gentle approach to my skin.

Hi everyone! I started a routine two weeks ago using the info in the beginner routine. Earlier this week, I noticed that my face gets really oily, particularly on my forehead and cheeks, after the following routine:

Today, I tried to troubleshoot by skipping the exfoliation step (thinking that it was drying out my skin and causing over-production of oil) and noticed the same oiliness. I think it’s the lotion. Thoughts?

Edit: should add that my face is quite fine without the routine at all. I just have to wash my face and the oiliness goes away with the lotion.

I can imagine you are getting a lot of recommendations, but I would really say it is a good idea to not to incorporate too many new things at once. That way just in case you have a bad reaction to something, you will be able to figure out what is causing the issue right away and you can stop using it immediately. Unless you feel like it is not moisturizing enough and you want something that works better, I would stick with your current moisturizer until you establish the other items into your routine.

My brothers really like using cerave products because they are inexpensive and don’t have crazy scents. This cleanser and this moisturizer has worked really well for my brothers dry skin.

it was for moisturizer. I haven’t tried OCM. I do oil pulling for my teeth but that’s as far as I’ve gotten for any kind of oil ‘treatment’.

Current routine is in the morning I just wash with warm water in the shower, use Go 360 Deep Clean cleanser. Twice a week I use a microderm scrub. I finish with tea tree oil (which makes my skin feel insanely smooth and clean for about 5 minutes).

After my face dries I use Aquaphor moisturizer then let that dry before applying makeup. I have to reapply powder about 2 times a day because my face gets so oily.

At night I wash with soap and water and then use a Neutragina make-up remover wipe and then moisturize with a pore minimizing cream.

I wake up in the morning and everything looks exactly the same as the day before. I’m currently looking up some rosacea-specific creams to possibly invest in. The redness and huge pores have become the real issue. I get an occasional zit here and there, but it’s nothing crazy anymore.

EDIT: I’ve been looking up some products to maybe look into and have come across these: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5

It sounds like you either have combination skin (when you have an oily forehead/nose and the rest is dry) or your skin is dehydrated (when your skin is dry but can overproduce oil to compensate).

To be on the safe side, I’d try a very gentle cleanser first, like Cerave Hydrating Cleanser or Neutrogena Ultra Gentle Hydrating Cleanser; they’re both very affordable. Be sure to patch test first.

A chemical exfoliant can help with clogged pores and acne, but I’d make sure you’ve got the basics down first: cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen.

What moisturizer are you currently using?

Basic skin care’s original recommendations (CerVe cleanser, Neutrogena toner, Cerve moisturizing cream) and still waiting on sunscreen. That’s about all for now 🙂
