Depends on the trimmer but look for ones with this kind of head https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0115I2DRI/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_MWD97MV8DZT8AM458QNM
For me at least even a close shave gives me razor bumps so I like using trimmers with a guard to leave almost a stubble to prevent it

Not at all! This is the one I use and I love it.

I use an older/cheaper version of this. There are other models from this same line on Amazon, I just clicked the top one. Basically any mens foil razor, and they work better dry. Works like a charm, and I take terrible care of mine! I think I’ve cut myself (super mild) maybe once or twice in the last decade. Pretty good odds.

As a fellow college student, I might recommend staying with an electric razor for now, at least until you get a better feel for your college routine. It’s a lot more time-effective to shave with an electric razor, and time will often come at a premium when you’re busy studying for midterms and meeting new people.
Prior to joining this sub, I shaved consistently with this Braun razor, which has a trimmer that I used to knock down longer hair before finishing up with the foil razor. From my past experience, I find that for electric razors, foil razors tend to be a lot more friendly on my skin than rotary razors (the ones with three circles, like this). You can try to find electric razors that work in the shower, which might help with skin irritation since your hair will soften up and be easier to shave.
