There aren’t that many closed back headphones with a balanced sound signature in your price range. One is the ATH M40x, but you won’t like the fit or the pads. Changing pads is possible, but velour pads don’t seem to work well with them.

Perhaps the Brainwavz HM-5 with their velour replacement pads would suit you. The combination is shown in the “Frequently bought together” section of this page. The Lindy HF100 is the same headphone and may be less expensive. Both are based on the Takstar Pro 80, which is no longer available.

Try to find yourself a pair of ‘closed’ headphones. They’re great at blocking out sound. When I have music on and my closed headphones on then I can’t hear my sister talking in front of my face.

You want a pair of closed headphones where the earpads completely cover your ears. Maybe something like the Brainwavz HM5.

This was the first thing that came to my mind. You could always ask over in /r/headphones. 🙂

According to user reviews the m40x is terribly fragile, so i’m holding off for a bit on that until i have zero other options.

I found this one on amazon and it ships to NL: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Brainwavz-HM5-Studio-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B006MA9XXM

It’s one of those Yoga rebrands mentioned in the guide. Is the m40x so much better than these for the increased price (95 euros vs ~75 including shipping for the HM5)? Because that HM5 looks a lot sturdier (and better, to me at least 🙂 ).

EDIT: The HM5 doesn’t seem to fare much better, and seems to have a less reachable support. Give and take a i guess.

Hmm, Brainwavz HM5 comes to my mind, you won’t break the bank, it will be very comfy, closed-back so you won’t bother anyone around you, detachable cables and decent, neutral-ish sound…

also rule 1, rip your post

> Are these good headphones for pc gaming?

No

> Or are there better ones for around the same price?

Yes

> I’m able to use the 5.1 virtual surround sound my driver comes with using these headphones, will I also be able to do the same with the new headphones?

please use stereo…you have two ears, no need for more channels if you are using a headphone with two full range drivers.

Thanks for your reply Ofenlicht. Two questions for you,

1 – With the DT770’s there are three OHM options. I have no idea which one?
2 – I can’t seem to find the NVX XPT100 here in the UK doh! These come up on Amazon though BRAINWAVZ HM5 Studio Monitor Headphones

Need some new over-ear closes headphones for streaming. Budget is $100-$150. Used to own these http://www.amazon.com/Brainwavz-HM5-Studio-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B006MA9XXM and liked them A LOT. Would buy them again but wanted to see what you guys recommend first.

I would use these headphones for streaming/audio recording, music and basically everything you would use headphones for!

These Headphones
and an Audio-technica AT2020 or a Blue Yeti is my personal favorite setup for the price and quality. I have had alot of headphones, this was the best for the price I got it at. I would take this setup over Astros any day and the headphones can be used for music aswell.

Edit: Sennheiser Headsets such as the G4ME ONES are superior to the Astros imo. The MixAmp is probably the best thing with the Astros and is really handy for gaming.

These are just the best headsets, in my opinion, for their price. If you can spend more than $200, you can get awesome headphones.

Dont get a 7.1 headset. The reason surround sound is good with speakers is because of the space, with a headset it’s going to be little to no difference, and you can get software which give you virtual surround sound which is the same effect (if you really wanted it) “Gaming” headsets are also a waste of money, the mic quality is usually terrible and the sound is average.

That being said, the sennheiser range is amazing but a little pricey.

I use these for headphones, (there are cheaper unbranded ones here, which are the same thing) and I honestly think they are better than the gaming headsets I’ve owned in the past (Logitech g35, Siberia V2).

You can buy a cheap clip on mic, or use a webcam for a mic and you should be set. Trust me, as soon as I bought a 7.1 “gaming” headset, I never used the surround sound after a week, and regretted my purchase since. The headphones I’ve linked are AMAZING and a lot of my friends have bought one after demoing mine!

If you are set on a gaming one though, I’d have to recommend Logitech G35, or the wireless version which is the G930. Sound/Mic quality is good and if you take care of your things it should last a while.

Hope this helps!

It’s not really a closed back equivalent of the HD 600 afaik but the HM5 is a pretty solid neutral closed back headphone. Between my other pairs (and the broken HM5 headband which was entirely my fault) I don’t use it as much because I heavily prefer open headphones but I still like them and they seem to be pretty well regarded in general. They’re also on sale right now, no idea for how long.

There’s also the HD 380 Pro though I don’t have any personal experience with them so I can’t say much about them. There also doens’t seem to be a lot of talk about them here but they have pretty solid reviews everywhere that sells them and, worst case scenario, a lot of vendors have a 30 day refund system.

Brainwavz HM5

AudioTechnica M40x

Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro 32 ohm

Beyerdynamic Custom One

The aforementioned Status CB-1 ‘s can also be an option. They are very comfortable and sound excellent for the money, but it should be noted that their build quality is… delicate.

Also, it’s highly advised a better pair of earpads be purchased along with the M40x ‘s, if you choose those.

The brainwavz HM5 come with much more comfortable earpads.

FYI: the Kingston HyperX Cloud was essentially a rebranded Takstar Pro 80 with a mic. This should help you find more info if you want to compare.

I would not recommend the Fostex without a separate amp, and it isolates quite a bit less than other closed headphones.

In terms of the NVX XPT100 – this thing goes under a lot of names (all essentially the same headphone from Chinese brand “Yoga” with different pads). For instance, the Brainwavz HM5 at 180 CAD. These still have a somewhat rough sound, but the treble isn’t quite as crazy as the HyperX Cloud.

My choice in that range for closed headphones would probably be the ATH M50x at 200 CAD. This would be a bit warmer sound, with a less severely distorted bass than the HyperX Cloud.

> I have LSR 305

I hope you do not expect a headphone in the $150 price category to perform on the same level.

I’d recommend the Brainwavz HM5 or Sennheiser HD598 for comfy use with glasses.

I’m not sure if you’d be able to acquire them locally, but a good set of neutral headphones with great isolation are the Fischer Audio FA-003. This pair of headphones have been rebranded by both Brainwavz and NVX (sorry, Amazon US links):

I, personally, have the NVX versions. With a direct signal, these headphones have a neutral sound signature. But listening to the tracks you’ve provided and using an equalizer via my Creative Sound Blaster E5, I’m able to really emphasize the bass response in these headphones and make them more fun (try Porter Robinson’s song "Language").

These headphones require a pretty simple amplifier to give them good volume. Your MacBook Pro will have no problem driving these headphones, as I’ve used mine with them and had no issues.

As for isolation, these have the best isolation of the headphones I own. As a result, you’ll hear more, and the people around you will hear less. I don’t have to turn the volume up much to enjoy these, and even at those low volumes, I can’t hear anybody around me talking or making noise. I’ve used these at the office at work, and they’re great.

As for the issue regarding warmth, I really don’t experience that with these. And I’ve not had any Bose headphones (although that will change next week) to support or counter your claims of them making your ears warm.

Let me know if you have any questions!

  • The Kings of comfort: Brainwavz HM5, fairly neutral with a slight warm tilt.

  • The portable "Wunderwaffe". At this price point really a solid choice. Bass and treble are boosted though, may not be great for classical. Soundstage and comfort are average.

  • And this would be my pick. Highly analytical with a gently boosted low end. Amazing soundstage for classical music.

that’s about it 😀 all headphones are fairly sensitive and have a low impedance, hence they can be used directly from the smartphone and don’t require a headphone amplifier.

*edit: warning about the K553 PRO! They are not a small headphone and the price used to be lower than this ;D

THe NVXPT100 is from the same OEM manufacturer as the brainwavz HM5 and the Fischer FA003. They are supposed to sound quite good, and be extremely comfortable. I haven’t heard them.

The COP sounds reasonably good, with slightly muffled highs, but a good midrange and bass section, but a bit lacking in impact. The sound isn’t as musical and lush as some higher end headphones, but is still good for the price.

  • Bass 1: Slightly less than neutral bass- Very low sub-bass and almost no rumble.
  • Bass 2: More than neutral bass, very good for some genres like classical or jazz. Feels more open than setting 3.
  • Bass 3: Decent impact and volume, vocals are more upfront. Sub-bass picks up. My favourite setting.
  • Bass 4: Kind of head-rumbling, and bleeds into the mids a bit. Muffles female vocals. If you’re a basshead then great!

The solo 2 is a decent headphone that is over priced. I would maybe pay ~$90 for them. They are a dark headphone, lots of bass and they sound a bit congested so for classical its a no, unless you can sell them or something. Around $100 I would recommend the Brainwavz HM5 or their clone the NVX XPT100. Zeos has done a comparison video here. Physically they are different but audibly they are not. This is semi rule 1 but I think i’ve answered most of your questions.

I did not see those. That may be a better choice than the Audio Technica I found. Especially given their price in comparison to the ATH.

The Brainwaz HM5s are super comfortalbe and have a great nautral sound signature, that doesn’t slack in the bass: http://www.amazon.co.uk/BRAINWAVZ-HM5-Studio-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B006MA9XXM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1436186879&sr=8-1 Also look at the newer model, the HM9, which rests in your ear, but is so comfortable it kind of molds its self around your ear leaving a nice fit: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Brainwavz-HM9-Hi-Fi-Isolating-Headphones/dp/B00ENZRS76/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1436187057&sr=8-1&keywords=HM9 But if you want a more subdued look, the NVX XPT100s fit your preferred tonal balance and are also super comfortable, probably the most comfortable out of these three, not to mention they have amazing sound stage for a pair of closed back headphones: http://www.amazon.com/NVX-Over-Ear-Headphones-ComfortMax-Cushions/dp/B0093PVTPS I think these are your best bet.
