The problem with most auto-drip machines is that they don’t get the water nearly hot enough for optimal extraction and they don’t wet the grinds evenly. There are a few coffee makers approved by the SCAA that DO heat the water enough and disperse it evenly but yours is not on the list. (http://www.scaa.org/?page=cert2)
It MAY be good enough but I don’t see anything in the product description about water temp or dispersion. If it doesn’t do those well then its no better than a Mr. Coffee from the supermarket.
I wouldn’t trust the people at Consumer Reports to rate a coffee maker, chances are they don’t really know what they’re looking for in terms of taste.
My recommendation would be to try Aeropress, French press, or pour-over (in order of how highly I recommend it for a newbie). The problem with pretty much any standard coffee maker is that they don’t get the water hot enough for full extraction and they don’t wet the grounds evenly. Any of the machines that don’t get hot enough or disperse evenly are all pretty much equally bad. All of the ones on the list do, but you’re gonna spend at least $75 which is why I recommend (in this order for a newbie) Aeropress, French press, or pour-over. But if you don’t want to mess with manual brewing then get a GOOD machine.
