Well this is awkward, I’m now the person who has opinions about handheld vacuums. I wanted to say to not buy the $29 vacuum linked below. I’ve had that exact model and it’s made of such cheap plastic that the parts holding it together just broke with very light use. It also has terrible suction compared to slightly more expensive models. I’ve replaced it with this https://www.amazon.com/BLACK-DECKER-Dustbuster-Cordless-CHV1410L/dp/B006LXOJC0/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=mini+vacuum&qid=1625819801&sprefix=mini+va&sr=8-4 and while it’s not super powerful it’s still loads better than the original one.

A dog would be helpful, for sure. We bought this dust buster and it lasted roughly 6 years of constant use, even after some of the messiest meals. Just make sure you clean the filter. We just replaced it about 6 months ago. Our girls are now 7.

If you need to cover a larger section of floor, Amazon also sells gym style floor tiles. They’re basically the same as the kid ones but a little thicker and without any pattern. They’re usually cheaper too.

I also recommend that people add a small hand vac to their registries. I have this one and with a toddler it gets used several times a day (by both of us!).

Here’s the vacuum I use! I like it because it comes apart easily and it’s meant for bigger objects (like poop). You can also wash the filter and attachments in the sink. Good price too!

If your current vacuum works, I wouldn’t get rid of it but I would supplement it with something. I have super long hair and we have 3 dogs so I ended up getting a handheld cordless (this one) for quick jobs. We do have hardwood through most of the house, but it works great for all the random hair that piles against walls and getting cobwebs out of corners. It’s small and light weight with an extension so you don’t need to bend too much and you can just do quick touchups then do a heavier cleaning with the old vacuum when needed.

Also remember that the postpartum shedding will end, it would be silly to get something specifically for that.

I’m not completely sure because my SO bought it and I can’t recall the brand but I know he got it on Amazon.

It looks exactly like this so it’s probably this one:

https://www.amazon.com/BLACK-DECKER-CHV1410L-Cordless-Lithium/dp/B006LXOJC0/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1534967383&sr=8-4&keywords=hand+held+vacuum&dpID=41kVO1HjrgL&preST=_SY300_QL70_&dpSrc=srch

I don’t like to vacuum up the poo though (even though it can), I usually just sweep the poop and vacuum the hay bits.

My mother bought my wife and I one of these from Black and Decker. I’ve been vacuuming grinds with it for a year, no problems. I’ve only gone as fine as a Bodum Bistro grinder can go though, so if you have something that goes much finer, perhaps it would jam this thing up.

I use a long-handled Swiffer duster thingie (it traps dust instead of just moving it around and has an extendable handle so I can reach up high or down low (without bending over).

That being said, air filters will make a big difference at least with circulating dust if not pet hair. If you have central air/forced air heat (ducts) make sure there are good filters on the main unit and they are changed regularly. We have electric heat so this isn’t an option for us, but since I have dust mite and pet dander allergies, I have a powerful HEPA air filter for the bedroom. For general cleaning, floors are vacuumed with a Dyson (which has lifetime HEPA filters) – including hardwood and tile, we never sweep just vacuum, since it seems faster and better gets all the cat fur (we have 3 cats). We have the Dyson Animal upright, which we got refurbished to save money. I also recently got a DustBuster with an extendable nozzle, which is great for getting dust/debris on surfaces and in between fully vacuuming the rooms. It doesn’t have HEPA filters, but does have filters that seem to trap dust well. This is what I have: http://www.amazon.com/DECKER-CHV1410L-Lithium-Cordless-Buster/dp/B006LXOJC0/

Thanks for the response.

Can you elaborate on how exactly cat litter damages a vacuum? We just bought a new Sebo vacuum that we’re happy with, but since it was quite expensive, we’re trying to find a separate machine to use for the litter.

The Whoosh looks nice, but event that’s big. We’re really looking for something like this: http://www.amazon.com/DECKER-CHV1410L-Lithium-Cordless-Buster/dp/B006LXOJC0

Should we just assume that anything we buy would break down quickly due to the litter and just go with the cheapest option that would be powerful enough to suck up the litter?

Weird, I use the Black & Decker and it works wonderfully for me for litter and cat hair. I didn’t pick up the model you linked though, I got the lithium ion model precisely because I read reviews on the original model of battery/power issues or lack of power and battery time…

I empty it less than once every two weeks and I use it to pick up cat kibble, litter, and hairs on the floor every morning. Perhaps the battery makes a difference, I felt it had good suction power and haven’t experienced it running out of power mid-vacuuming yet.

On the litter tracking issue, I went through about 5 different covered litter boxes before I finally settled on the top-entry type. That reduced almost 99% of litter tracked around my house, have used it for 6 years now.

I charge the vacuum cleaner fully and it runs only for 5 mins. I am guessing battery is the problem. What else could be the issue? This is the link to the vaccum cleaner: https://www.amazon.com/BLACK-DECKER-Dustbuster-Cordless-CHV1410L/dp/B006LXOJC0/

Also, Is it possible to test if battery is still working using regular battery tester?

I have this portable vacuum and it works amazing! I use it for the same exact reasons, my messy toddler. 😅 I also use it in my car. It charges fast and is easy to empty. I like how the nozzle extends to get into tough hard to reach corners in the car or sofa.

As for activities for my active almost two year old, we’ve been doing a lot of coloring, bubbles, trips to the park, dancing and singing to YouTube videos. We got her some foam play mats to climb all over or slide down while she’s playing in the living room too. They fold up and can be put away when we need the space again which I like. There are a ton of options online but the exact ones we purchased are these ones!

Right now she’s really into Lego Duplo, toy trains and tracks, all ‘Green Toys’ branded toys, hats and other age-safe dress up things, Fisher Price Little People sets and stickers. We also got her a toy desk that she loves sitting at and doing her own thing when she wants some quiet alone time to play. She’ll take a book there, play with her legos, eat a snack, color or play with the desk itself which plays music or teaches letters and words. ☺️

This is the most powerful handheld cordless I have. Don’t get anything smaller. Wash the filter often and get a spare to swap so you don’t have downtime.

https://smile.amazon.com/Hoover-Cordless-Lithium-Lightweight-BH52210PC/dp/B01KKCI9GE/ref=sr_1_7?crid=2KN8I7JI6EM4D&keywords=stick+vacuum+hoover&qid=1584002202&s=home-garden&sprefix=stick+vacuum+hoover%2Cgarden%2C248&sr=1-7

Of course, if you have money, get a Dyson. This is a cordless Dyson clone but works. Not as powerful as the B&D but there is a narrow tube attachment that can reach difficult areas in the car. It can also do the floor at home obviously.

But I hose the floormats or brush them so there is only the floor to work on. I hate the hose at the self carwash. I don’t even want to touch them and it’s a lot of work.

If you want a wet vac, it’s worthwhile to be separate and need to use the main for enough power.

https://smile.amazon.com/Armor-Gallon-Utility-Vacuum-AA255/dp/B003M2F7NI/ref=sr_1_4?keywords=vacuum+wet&qid=1584003014&s=home-garden&sr=1-4

I don’t have this one but similar. You need the claw tool for the car but they can clog and difficult to clean.

Also, read Amazon recommendations is better.

This is probably the best for that price range. Plus, you can use it for your home. It’s handy to have around.
