Best thing I ever got… I use on my bed also and it’s fantastic. With the different attachments, it’s also handy for a quick clean up of kicked out litter from his tray.

I have the Bissell Pet Hair eraser hand vac. Just looked it up and it looks like it might not be available anymore or there’s a new version out. I got it on Amazon for 60$. It has worked great for us, the battery lasts a long time, it recharges fairly quickly and has good suction. My 2yo has even dropped it a couple times while trying to “help” and it has survived intact.

I paid 60$ for it I think.

What are you looking for that you’re not getting with your current one? I use BISSELL Pet Hair Eraser Lithium Ion Cordless Hand Vacuum and love it. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CB6RBSP/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_JN3GKEB7MSGH70KFE11Z?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

You’re not wrong there. I think there’s a strong tendency for users on the sub to assume that everyone needs some type of BIFL vacuum. For a lot of people (especially those looking for a specialty vacuum like a cordless handheld), I don’t see much wrong with taking a Harbor Freight approach and buying a cheaper model today with the intent of replacing it with a higher quality model down the line.
BTW, I’ve had this $70 cordless for about a year now and liked it well enough. It’s got an older Dustbuster style design, but the electric brushroll tool is pretty awesome on stairs and pet hair. While I don’t like the filter/dust cup design, it’s not THAT hard to clean out (no crazy multicyclonic setups like a Dyson).

This one has been fantastic for me. Even gets all my fluffy white dogs fur out!

I would recommend a pet hair version. I got three pets in my rig so it’s essential.

>so what you are saying is buying extra attachments will make it work well on area rugs and carpet? also to clarify, I think my carpet would be classified as soft if it makes any difference to your recommendations.
Yeah, you’ll probably see a good improvement by using a turbo brush here’s a $40 link to the one I mentioned. If you stick with the included combo tool, you’ll probably need to do some repeated “scrubbing” of the carpet to dislodge ground-in stuff. Still, this vacuum isn’t going to do as well on the soft carpet as one with an electrically motorized brushroll, regardless of whether you use the combo or the turbine head. Top-tier hard floor/above-floor performance though.
I’ll link you to a pick-up video of the James that features both the combo and turbine tool that I mentioned.

> is there such a thing as a quality / reliable carpet & rug vacuum for under $150 (while budget is higher, I’d love to save money) and pair it with a wet mop for the hardwood floors
At just over $150 currently, the Hoover T-Series Tempo is seen as a decent machine for the price on /r/VacuumCleaners. This one’s mainly carpet oriented, but it’s got a brushroll shutoff for bare floor cleaning (though it won’t be as effective as the James). It’s not of the same quality as the James though, and I’d expect it to last 4-8 years with regular use.
> last question: any recommendations on a handheld cordless spot cleaning vac that I can use to clean small messes without having to set up the James?
I’ve got this Bissell that I find to be alright, though not stellar. It’s strong enough to pick up leaves that fall from houseplants and comes with a little electric brush for pet hair cleaning, though it still isn’t as effective as one of my canisters with only a (non-turbo) upholstery tool. Battery life is fine for a quick run-though of the furniture on my first-floor, though this one doesn’t have an actual dock and needs to be plugged in to the charging cable once it runs down. The emptying and filter cleaning process is a bit of a pain, though a good canister like the James would make it cleaner and quicker.

I’ve got this Bissell and am decently happy with it. It’s not the best built nor the easiest to clean machine, but it’s alright enough for the price. Bissell lists it as weighing 3 lbs, so hopefully it would be comfortable for you to use. This one’s got a little detachable motorized brush for pet hair too, which works fine in my experience.

Target also carries these, so you might want to buy it there so you can test it at home and return it if it doesn’t work out.
