Save up a bit more and grab the Bayer 990’s
They’re just over 100 dollars and they will sound significantly better than any headphones in your original price range.
There is no reason to spend money on cheap headphones because it will only guarantee that you will need to upgrade later which will cost you even more in the long run.

https://www.amazon.com/beyerdynamic-Over-Ear-Studio-Headphones-construction/dp/B0011UB9CQ

They’re 150 usd (I’m assuming you’re in the states)

These are widely used and great quality entry level headphones. I would not only recommend that you save up and spend the extra cash but I would actually advise against purchasing anything that is cheaper. Cheap headphones can actually make your mixes worse as you will make mixing decisions in order to compensate for the sound of the headphones. This will cause issues when you play your music through other sound systems as the song will only sound good on your headphones.

Of course, this is all to be taken with a grain of salt. Professional mixing engineers will be able to mix on lesser quality headphones because they know what proper levelling looks like and sounds like. But if you’re not experienced, then it is easy to be tricked by headphones that aren’t giving you a proper flat response.

My buddy just sent me a link to 250 ohm 990 PROs that are on sale for $157 at the moment if that’s your thing. I’m looking at getting a pair for my wife. I’m rockin the HD6XX Senns and I just picked up a couple of 4th gen iPod monos to fix up and enjoy.

I’d recommend one. Truthfully, anything from the DT line will be better because of comfort and focus on sound. For instance, the 990 and JDS Labs atom would be roughly the same. Or you can go for the 80 ohm version and skip the amp.

I’d also recommend the Beyer Dynamic dt 990 pro.
https://www.amazon.com/beyerdynamic-Over-Ear-Studio-Headphones-construction/dp/B0011UB9CQ?th=1

I own a pair of these and love them. You aren’t going to get the bass that the audio technica’s deliver, which I do miss sometimes, but the big positive is comfort. These things are so soft. It’s like wearing two musical pillows on my head. I can wear them all day without any fatigue or headaches.
I also like that they’re open back and allow in some exterior sound, but that’s personal preference.

You can’t go wrong with Audio Technica’s though. Great products all around.

Bro, high-impedance headphones are like $700 ballpark. Most range $1.5k easy. Cheapest is probably still around $350 and you make sacrifices.

If you just want any pair of headphones then impedance doesn’t really matter to you and at a $100 point that’s what you’re going to get. All will be relatively the same really: drowned in bass, muffled mids, and without any kind of sound separation. Doesn’t really matter which you pick up.

If you’re looking for budget but very respectable sound, check out beyerdynamic’s line-up. The 990 is past your price point, but worth it. TBH, I would save up a little longer rather than throw away $100.

Bought a pair of Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro at the start of the pandemic for use at my home computer. I’m running them through a Scarlet Solo and they’ve been excellent. Trouble is, the cable is showing signs of wearing out.

I’m looking to replace them with something similar (~250 ohms, open-backed, 3.5mm or 6.35mm jack) that has a replaceable cable. My budget is $400. Anyone have any recommendations?

I never owned these, but my friend swears by them: https://www.amazon.com/beyerdynamic-Over-Ear-Studio-Headphones-construction/dp/B0011UB9CQ?th=1

Apparently they’re great for large soundstages for games like CSGO when you need map awareness. Bass also slaps nicely.

If you’re actually looking for an upgrade, go for some headphones around the $200 range. If you get 3+ years out of them, thats a cheap price to pay.

Something like Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO

Yes, the mix gets a lot clearer after 0:40 or so. I listened to the whole song, and it’s actually pretty cool, you’ve got a nice little riff going that’s pretty catchy. Sorry about my first comment.

I’m using these headphones:
https://www.amazon.com/beyerdynamic-Over-Ear-Studio-Headphones-construction/dp/B0011UB9CQ

They’re kinda boomy and I got them recently, so I’m also probably still getting used to that. Even so, I tried my closed back Pioneer headphones and I still got a similar feeling.

What frequency is your HPF set to? Although really, what I hear more is a “lack of presence” (which, as I understand, can come from lack of high freqs), so that’s why I thought you had a LPF below 12k or something like that.

> I tried using the soundcloud auto-masterimg tool for the first time

I would love to listen to the unmastered track if possible. I don’t have any idea how those tools work, so I’m just curious.

Another thing to consider is that maybe the lead guitar is not loud enough in the beginning. I feel like it gets lost in the mix, but the other leads later in the song are much more present.

Sorry if I’m not explaining things very well, I’m obviously not a pro.

My respect to you for having an open mind and accepting criticism so well, we should all be a little more like that.

The JDS Atom + OL DAC is a pretty solid setup. Personally I would simply use your motherboard’s stock audio input, add a quality open-backed headphone (if practical in your situation) and call it a day. From where I’m sitting the DT 990 (250 ohm) would be your best value option:

 • Affordable ($130 at Amazon)
 • Built like a tank. All parts available. Should last a lifetime
 • Über comfortable
 • Excellent sound quality, if a bit hot on the treble side. Easily fixed with EQ.
 • Wide sound stage and emphasized treble is what you want for competitive gaming.

that sounds what like what I’m looking for. I’m aiming to get a wide soundstage with controlled but not overpowering low end. If I was to get this version of the 990s, would I need an amp? Of course you like DT990, they’re better for both music and gaming. 🙂

What is your budget? The DT990 250 Ohm is on Amazon UK for £105. The UCA202 is £24. That takes care of headphones and DAC/amp for £129. The cheapest I’ve seen the DT770 80 Ohm is £119, so for +£10 you can have the best of the three models.

I have some £4 bluetooth earclip ones that I use at the gym and some £20 bludio for everything else (including gaming).

Previously had some £130 beyerdynamic wired headphones so really, I don’t ‘know it’ https://www.amazon.co.uk/Beyerdynamic-DT990-PRO-Headphones-250/dp/B0011UB9CQ .

The cable broke on them after about a 6 years ofc. I could maybe repair it, probably just sell them on ebay as spares or repairs. Maybe I could maybe retrofit bluetooth 5.0 to them.

I’ll use the 990 as an example as to how cheap you can buy them(new):

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0011UB9CQ/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE

After import fee refund(which they do), it’s $167 CAD or $124 USD.

That’s just new, I’ve seen used 880s/990s for 130-140 here.

Very good headphones, if you scroll down, you’ll see 3 items including the headphones. An amplifier (Fiio E10K) and a microphone (Mod Mic). That’s everything you need and it comes out to $269.78.

Hi,

What do you all think of the Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro 250 ohm headphones? I have really wanted to try some open back headphones for the soundstage and these appealed to me because I would not have to fully give up on bass. Are there better alternatives based on my needs at a similar price? Sidenote: a removable cable would be a plus. https://www.amazon.ca/Beyerdynamic-DT-990-Pro-250-Professional-Acoustically-Applications/dp/B0011UB9CQ

If you’re capable of fixing them I have a pair of Beyerdynamic DT990 PRO 250 OHM with a dodgy cable near the 3.5mm audio jack. Essentially in order to hear anything I need to straighten the cable around two inches from the jack. The issue doesn’t seem to be the Jack itself but the cable two – three inches from it.

Would sell for around £20 + postage.

I currently have a budget of about $250 Canadian, so far I am looking at these: http://www.amazon.ca/Beyerdynamic-DT-990-Pro-250-Professional-Acoustically-Applications/dp/B0011UB9CQ

I currently have ATH M50x’s, so will this upgrade be a noticable improvement? Or is it better to save for a bit longer and get an even better pair of cans? Or are there an even better pair of headphones that I missed that are within my budget?

Amazon UK have been doing a few decent deals, you have to be quick though because they sell out. I managed to pick up a pair of brand-new Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro 250 OHMS for £79.99, which isn’t bad to say you can never find them for under £98. I’ve seen a few AKGs on there as well. ~~They’re currently doing Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro 250 OHMS for £74.99:~~

Beyerdynamic DT-990 Pros. I’m not a audiophile so I can’t really describe how they perform, but they’re very comfortable and don’t lose their forms and are durable^fell ^off ^my ^desk ^dozens ^of ^times. Apparently the treble can be overwhelming and can end in fatigue when combined with heavy bass, so lowering the 8hkz sliders are recommended.

A crappy mic will suffice, sure you wont be able to do any streaming but as long as you can convey your point in multiplayer games then who really cares. I’ve thought about buying a blue snowball but backed out as it is effectively paying for other peoples convenience.

How are these headphones for what I will use them for.

Budget– well I wouldn’t consider these if they broke budget

Source– PC and maybe phone

Isolation– not bothered either way but some isolation would be nice

Preferred Type– again if I didn’t want this type I wouldn’t consider them

Preferred tonal balance– just an all around pair of headphones

Past headphones– beats solo’s which I regret purchasing

Preferred music– mostly metal and electronic

Also I guess this place is appropriate as ever to ask about the mod mic that people usually buy with these headphones. Is it any good or should I shop around?

250ohms. I think it’s a very fair trade. In fact, doing some research, it seems that my headphones are actually priced a bit higher. Your Mobo+CPU would sell for about $150-$160. These headphones new sealed (as mine are) are $180-$190

What about trying the other german option: Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro.

It only costs $150 on Amazon and is used by some of the top gamers and streamers. It is pretty much the polar opposite of your HD6XX headphones, with a crystal clear (verging on sibilant) sound VS the warm and laid-back (some say “veiled”) efforts of your current Sennheiser.

The good news is that details (like footsteps) will be heard clear as day on a wide soundstage. Bad news is that treble sensitive listeners should not apply (at least not without EQ). Bass reproduction is amazing: textured and visceral, down to sub-bass levels. And the midrange is relatively neutral.

Beyerdynamic are more comfortable than most. Personally I found the “Pro” version more comfy than the “Edition” version, but YMMV. The latter also comes in the 600 ohm version (Pro = 250 ohm) which should offer the best sound (higher impedance = lower noise floor) given your setup.

And if you feel like $150 is too cheap, check out the DT 1990 Pro ($600 on Amazon).

So seeing you have a headset, the A40s. They aren’t very good compared to price equivalent Of DT 990’s and as well as DT 770s now I would highly suggest upgrading to a headphone and a modmic or blue yeti.

Comparisons

Headsets are generally really bad, the A40s/A50s are ok, they aren’t great but not bad. What I would do is move to headphones and a modmic. People have made this switch and love it. The DT 990s are stupid comfy, same for the DT 880s and DT 770s and any Bererdynamic headphones. They are so comfy, huge pads, deep cuffs, comfy, so much.

Open vs closed back

Headsets are generally closed back, however they have some issues with that. They tend to have bad audio positioning in the headset. They don’t give spacial awareness and such.

Open headphones leak sound, so people around you can hear. The drivers are directly exposed or slightly covered. However they offer a lot better experience, much larger sound stage, much better audio positioning, and everything better overall.

Mics

Now for headphones, they don’t come with mics so you have a few options. You can get a Blue Yeti mic, a modmic, Audio Technica AT2020, or similar. I’ll list a few

Headphones closed and open

AMPs/DACs

Finals words

I would visit /r/headphones for a 2nd opinion too. Also feel free to ask any questions regarding this or the build. I included a 1440p monitor if you wanted to upgrade instead of the headphones.

Ah, alright. I was once in your shoes. This might end up a rather long response but if you have time to read it I think it might help.

The thing to realize is that every component in your system (there are exceptions) is a cap that is going to limit the maximum potential of your sound quality. There is no point in putting Rolls-Royce super noise proof wheels on a Toyota corolla. So in that sense I would say, don’t think about having to buy a DAC as an EXTRA cost, rather a component that you need to balance.

Lets say you want to keep your $400 maximum. If you spend $350 on a DAC/Amp combo and $50 on headphones, your headphones are your limiting factor. IF you spend it all on headphones and plug it straight to your PC, your onboard dac/motherboard is the limiting factor. So you want to balance it all out so that your system makes sense within itself. And that scales up (and down) also. No point in running $5k headphones with a $600 amp. And if you’re running $20 headphones you don’t need anything other than your onboard sound. You get my point.

Now, I’m sure there are some motherboards out there that have shockingly good onboard sound now days. Also, forget buying a soundcard. When I was first trying to figure all this out I thought that a soundcard was what I needed. It’s not. There are use cases but, meh, trust me on that one. With all that said, I think that you will be most happy with the results if you split your budget into headphones, DAC, and headphone amp. I could keep going on and on about this point but again, depending on your particular motherboard, once you’re over that $150-200ish range on headphones your new limiting factor is the PC.

Okay detour for a few points I should mention.

 • 1, cables. There are a lots of people that will flip their shit and tell you to buy the absolute cheapest cables you can find because the super overpriced cables are a complete ripoff and won’t make your system sound better. They’re not wrong about the later but I’d say don’t actually buy the cheapest cables you can. Shit cables are shit and will break.

 • Point 2, if you are going to consider a DAC/amp combo, make sure you have a power strip or somewhere to plug them in by your pc. They’re just regular wall plugs.

 • 3, everyone’s preferred sound is different. In a minute I’ll get into recommending specifics but different people will have different suggestions on specific gear. I think, and this is just my opinion, at the lower price points (say, sub $1k), you’re really looking for a great sound over specific flavors.

 • 4, there are a ton of things that confused me when I was getting into audio equipment. A lot of it won’t matter at all right now. If you want I can try to clarify anything now or in the future. Just let me know, I don’t mind! But a few things to totally ignore right now: USB-3.5mm cables. USB is a digital signal. 3.5mm is analog. Your guess is as good as mine on what these are for, don’t buy them they won’t help you. Sound cards, again. Pre-amp vs amp confusion, don’t worry about it. Balanced vs unbalanced, don’t worry about it. Anything “super duper good gold plated blah blah blah” yeah skip that. There is a lot of snake oil in audio equipment for some reason and the ones peddling it want to make things seem more complicated than they are. Setting up a DAC and a headphone amp is super easy. Takes less than 5 minutes.

 • 5 You don’t HAVE to spend $400. I’m sure you are aware of this, but again everyone’s idea of good or good enough is different and if you’re happy plugging $100 headphones into your PC than by all means go for that. The audiophile world gets a little crazy sometimes and you will eventually reach a point of diminishing returns for big money.

Okay so what would I recommend you buy?

TL;DR Beyerdynamic 990s OR Sennheiser HD560s

Why? Both are relatively cheap, industry standard headphones. Very well made, very good sound. Good bass response should suit your music tastes well. Even if you ignore everything else I said, which is fine, I still recommend you get one of these. 250ohm version with the amp, 80ohm version if you want to plug it into your PC directly for the Beyers.

In addition, this headphone amp and this DAC. Why? Both of these have become cliché in the audiophile world, but it is for a good reason. I think you’d be well challenged to find a better setup for that price point. Add up all that and you’re right at $400. Realistically, add taxes, a usb A to usb B cable, and a set of RCA cables and you’ll be around $450. I think this is your best option if you’re okay with that.

I’ve already typed up half a book so I’ll leave it at that but there is so much that I feel like I left out. Feel free to ask anything you want. I hope this helps.

This seems like a good option If you need a good pair of headphones from a reputable brand, but if you already have a usb mic I would personally recommend the Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO which are open back headphones but give you a lot better sound stage and imaging.Paired up with a usb amp and dac combo like the
FiiO E10K and you have a excellent gaming setup for about the same price is a amazing deal.

Hello! Sorry, the post is too long but you can read the TL;DR!

TL;DR Stuck between getting an amazing deal on a Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro(170$) vs ATH m40x(140$ LOCAL/CHEAPEST) or an ATH m50x(210$ LOCAL/CHEAPEST). It doesn’t have to be any of these particular headsets I’m open to recommendations but some might not be available locally(importing would add a lot of fees too). The Beyerdynamic are at an amazing price compared to local pricing. I don’t own an amp or a DAC.

I’ve been using terrible, broken headsets/earbuds for the past year, but now I finally have the money to buy a decent pair of headsets. I’ve done a lot of research during the past 3 weeks but that only raised more questions in my head so I’m here to ask for shopping advice! I spent my time gaming 40%(70% fps 30% casual) of the time and spend the rest 60% watching youtube videos, shows listening to music, and podcasts.

What I got my eyes on: I found a very reasonable price for a Beyerdynamic DT990 pro on amazon that ships to Turkey with very low import fees (150+20$ vs 270$ or 2300 Turkish Liras local price). But I’ve heard that they have very sharp treble, The bass is not a problem though. I’ve also looked into ath m50x and ath m40x which also seem pretty good especially since the m40x is very affordable at 140$ local price vs the 170$ Beyerdynamic and 210 USD ath m50x.

Budget – 150$-200$ or around 1750 Turkish Liras

Source – Asrock z370 onboard audio (apparently supports up to 600 ohms but probably marketing fuss) but plugged into front IO with HD Audio. I don’t plug them into the back because the audio starts to produce crackling noises(I’d love to hear any solutions you might have about this too). I won’t be getting an amp for at least 1,5 years.

Requirements for Isolation – Doesn’t really matter. I’ve been using a broken Sennheiser cx3.00 with only the left earbud working and after 2.5 months I’ve gotten used to external noises. I will only use them at home

Preferred Type of Headphone – Everything except on-ears

Preferred tonal balance – I’m not sure. I do like some kicking bass but I like Sennheiser’s smooth tone too. I’m not too worried about treble being high.

Past headphones – G332:Good; I’m used to them, big earcups Bad; Always slides down from my head and had a very long cable which caused it to break from me tripping over it.

Sennheiser cx.3.00:Good; I like the sound quality. A little bit easier on my head. Bad; short cable since it is an earbud, Very little to nonexistent bass.

Preferred Music – Classical music and video game OST’s

Location – Turkey. You can use cimri.com to compare the prices of headsets because they vary a lot even to they cost the same MSRP. Sadly it doesn’t have an English language option but all you need is the search bar and the prices are listed very clearly. I do think this is a little overkill though any headset under 150 MSRP is fine.

Sorry if my English and wording are bad in some paragraphs and sorry for the length essay.
Also sorry if I didn’t follow any of the subreddit rules by accident.

Yeah my first pair of studio headphones, Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO extremely comfy and I’ve got a relatively large head 😂 accompanied by a FiiO K3. My plans are to upgrade the amp in the future, but its doing great job for now!

Higher the ohm, the lower the noise floor, and the more power needed for volume. This is the one I am referring to:

with a DAC Fulla2 Schiit

These headphone are completly open, but is good for earing the other.

if you want a semi open or full close, there are the 880 or 770

for noise cancelation, i’m using a Parrot Zik (pretty great but not for an entire day)

Hi all, I’ve not really owned any headphones and only purchased “gaming” Headsets when I was younger. I’m looking to upgrade my sound setup and experience better sound!

I’ve considered a few headphones but never know which one to go for as there are always pro’s and con’s for each headphone.
Initially I was going to go for the HD650/HD600 as the more i read on them the more tempted I am in buying one of these. Would these work with gaming also as I’ve read they don’t have the largest sound stage?

Currently, I’m considering – DT990 PRO – https://www.amazon.co.uk/Beyerdynamic-DT990-PRO-Headphones-250/dp/B0011UB9CQ/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8
I could also consider the 990 Premium (possibly the 600Ohm one however unsure if my Soundblaster Omni is good enough for it) – Also looked into the DT880’s but read that DT990’s provide a bit more bass but that the 880s are more clear with vocals.

Also looked into these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/AKG-Reference-Open-Back-Over-Ear-Headphones/dp/B00DCXZY1W however, read that they are light on bass. I like my bass to be quite stronger than neutral but nothing overkill, for movies/music so maybe these might not be for me.

Finally this was last on my list as I’m able to go both open and closed – https://www.amazon.co.uk/HiFiMan-Open-Closed-Back-Headphones/dp/B01EJZHCQQ/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics-accessories&ie=UTF8&qid=1503143202&sr=1-1&keywords=Hifiman+Edition+S however, read how the build quality is not that great.

Mainly will be using the headphones for 85% gaming, 5% music, 10% movies.

Budget – Preferably under £200 but flexible

Source – Creative Soundblaster Omni – USB Sound with 600 Ohm Headphone Amp –https://us.creative.com/p/sound-blaster/sound-blaster-omni-surround-5-1 – I’m hoping this is powerful enough to power most headphones without any problems?

Requirements for Isolation – Will only be using headphones at home, I don’t mind less isolation but I plan on attaching a mic (ModMic) and don’t want my microphone picking up the sound, even at reasonbly loud volumes.

Will you be using these Headphones in Public? Nope 🙂

Preferred Type of Headphone – Do you want IEMs, full-sized, or on-ear? Full-sized/Over the ear

Preferred tonal balance – Are you a basshead, particularly fond of a smooth midrange, strong highs, or do you want an overall balanced pair of headphones? – This part I’m not really sure on, I like a decent amount of bass but nothing overkill. I’m looking for something with possibily a good sound stage that works well mainly for gaming/movies and movies, tough to balance all i suppose but in order, Gaming>Music>Movies. Main reason I want decent/good bass as it feels as if it adds to my immersion when gaming/watching movies.

Past headphones – What have you used in the past, what did you like about them and what didn’t you like aboutSteelseries Siberia Elite – For me, has a great level of base and overall sound and the best sounding headphones I’ve ever owned, but it’s time to step up my sound game now and looking for something a lot better :]

Preferred Music – What do you listen to? If your music tastes are very esoteric, providing some examples (Youtube links work well) may be of some assistance to your helpers. – Music taste varies from time to time, but often listen to house music, electronic dance music, any new music popular music (Global Top 50 etc.)

What would you like to improve on from your set-up – What are you looking for going into your next headphone? More bass? More detail? More treble? – Hopefully, an upgrade in my listening experience in gaming/music/movies, sound in general. Prefer that the bass feels slightly stronger than neutral to help with immersion in games such as Battlefield titles. A good sound stage and clear sound.

Location – UK

Thanks guys.

Hi there Im new to the whole audiophile scene and I have to say I LOVE IT! I just got my first pair of cans the Phillips shp 9500S and Ive got to say even though there a pair of budget cans they’re so much better than anything ive listen to! I love to sound stage the separation in the instruments they present and the mids only the lows are what seem kinda recessed for my linking hence is why i opened this post. Im currently on the fence with a pair of Berdynamics DT990 PRO 250 OHMS

https://www.amazon.com/Beyerdynamic-DT-990-Pro-250-Professional-Acoustically-Headphones/dp/B0011UB9CQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1492977756&sr=8-1&keywords=beyerdynamics+dt990

Ive seen some reviews on youtube and on RTINGS.com and it seems like they have good bass and really high highs but some say they’re too high 🙁 . I listen to music off my laptop using Spotify Premium or TIDAL HiFi and I also use them to play on console. I dont have any dacs or amps yet because im still deciding if i should go with a DAC and AMP combo(MODI 2 UBER and MAGNI 2 UBER) from SCHIIT or get the gamer oriented Soundblaster x7. Anythoughts on which would be the best solution for using on consoles and PC ?

Please help! I have both PS4 and xbox one S as well as a pair of Logitech z506 speakers that i would connect to the dac/amps either through RCA or RCA center/sub/rear on the soundblaster.

Cloud I are competitive in their price range. What I was referring to is more about particular preferences. For example, Cloud I are closed-back headphones. That has its advantages – if you game in a noisy environment, or if you don’t want to disturb the people near you, also the closed-back will have higher percieved volume per equal amplifier output power, since less sound-waves escape the earcup – especially important when using on-board audio. The digital audio processing quality of on-board audio certainly made progress, but the on-board amplifiers are still underpowered shit (barring few expensive motherboard that actually began using proper single-chip amplifiers from Texas Instruments, but those are rare and expensive).

However, if you want a more natural sound, and wider sound-stage – you really want an open-air headphones. Especially you want open-air headphones for positional audio.

In fact – most of the sound quality issues people attribute to Virtual Surround are not due to the deficiencies of the technique, but rather due to simply using the wrong headphones – when you use Virtual Surround with closed-back headphones – you will feel that reverb is too much, that the sound has very unnatural, compressed feel to it. With open-air headphones – assuming of course, you bought good ones – the virtual surround will sound way more real, more natural. That is not to say that you wont be able to tell where the gunshots come from when using Virtual Surround with closed-back headphones – that part works regardless, but with open-air, it just sound better.

To go for specifics – if you want a good open-air headphones under 100$ that will deliver virtual surround experience any closed-back “true 7.1 surround durr hurr durr” headset can only dream of – you can grab Phillips SHP9500. If you wanna get more serious – Beyerdynamic DT 990 250-Pro – those are legendary. Absolute sound clarity. However, those are 250-Ohm headphones, so you will have to have either a good sound card, or external amplification to drive them.

I just ordered a pair of these tonight, but I’m lost on what amp to get. I am completely new to any sort of advanced audio like this and have only owned gaming headsets and meh-tier earbuds all my life. With that in mind, I don’t think I have the most discerning of ears yet and it would probably be a waste to spend 200 on a Schiit stack or 02+ODAC combo, especially considering that’s over double the price of my headphones! I would prefer to keep amp/DAC totals to be in the $100 ballpark.

My first question – is a DAC even necessary for these? I’m still not entirely sure what it does, since all of the explanations I’ve seen have been in audiophile jargon that is gibberish to me. Can I get away with running only an amp or a amp/DAC combo?

A cheap option I’ve seen while shopping around is a amp/DAC combo as mentioned previously. I’ve heard SUPER mixed reviews of pairing these 250-Ohm headphones with a Fiio e10k, some saying it works great, but others saying the complete opposite. I’ve also heard good and bad things about SMSL products like the SMSL SD793-II, one mention highly recommending the iBasso D-Zero Mk2, and another few people recommending the CMOY.

What are my best options here? I would appreciate any help I can get. Sorry for the long post and thank you!

build looks good

for keyboards do you have any options besides razer? like a corsair k70. I personally have the one with brown switches and love it

for headphones you should consider getting open-back headphones and then getting a separate microphone. gaming headsets are usually shitty.

hd 558 ($100) or hd 598 ($150) but go on sale for cheaper often

Wait for Pascal to come out in 2 months for 4k cards. But with saved money get some good audio.

Here is what I’d do for 300 and then 600.

300:

http://www.modmic.com/collections/modmic/products/modmic-4-0-omni-directional Get a mic, one of the best.

Get headphones http://www.amazon.com/Beyerdynamic-DT-990-Pro-250-Professional-Acoustically-Applications/dp/B0011UB9CQ one of the best for 150, great deal.

And a DAC/AMP http://www.amazon.com/FiiO-E10K-Headphone-Amplifier-Black/dp/B00LP3AMC2/ref=pd_sim_267_2?ie=UTF8&dpID=41Taa5DTsKL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=0W24QWRXR6YFHZ0ESB51

 • Budget – Max around $240 – prefer to stick lower but if there are substantial gains from spending the full amount it’s fine.
 • Source – 95% of the time these will be used at my computer.
 • Isolation – won’t be a problem – maybe a fan in the background sometimes.
 • I’ll very rarely use these in public.
 • Preferred Type of Headphones – I prefer full-sized/over ear headphones.
 • Tonal Balance – I like snappy bass but listen to a variety of music and also use headphones to watch movies.
 • Past Headphones – Using my garbage Corsair 1500 gaming headset. Even without the crappy quality of these headphones, they have serious compatibility problems with Windows 10. Comfortable volume level is at like 4%. Sucks. I’ve heard some old Bose headphones a long time ago and loved the punchy bass and felt like I could hear more of the music being played. Without a model I’m not sure how much that will help you.
 • Preferred Music – Like I said before, this really varies. Stuff like Daft Punk, Emancipator, Dire Straights, Rage Against the Machine, Ice Cube, MF Doom, Rx Bandits, Cage the Elephant, Streetlight Manifesto.
 • **I want to get some more bass and hear more of the mids in my music from a new set of headphones.

The two set ups I’ve been looking at are:

 1. Beyerdynamic DT-990-Pro-250 as well as a FiiO E10k. – Since these need more than what my PC can give it I’ll have to spend the extra money on an amp/DAC combo. Since they’re open I’ll occasionally have to switch to my old headphones if my music is bothering others in the room. I’m alone in my office 80% of the time so this wouldn’t be the end of the world.

 2. AKG K550 – I’d be spending a little more on the headphones up front but wouldn’t need to purchase an amp/DAC right away to use these.

Thoughts?

Hi, I have two questions:

What do you all think of the Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro 250 ohm headphones? I have really wanted to try some open back headphones for the soundstage and these appealed to me because I would not have to fully give up on bass. Are there better alternatives based on my needs at a similar price? Sidenote: a removable cable would be a plus.
https://www.amazon.ca/Beyerdynamic-DT-990-Pro-250-Professional-Acoustically-Applications/dp/B0011UB9CQ

I am also planning on powering the next headphones I buy with an amp and DAC, what do you all think of the M audio super DAC? I like this DAC because of it’s many ports, the (1/4 and 1/8 connectors are a big plus for future compatibility). But I have not found many reviews for this device online, which is a bit concerning. I will be connecting this to my laptop via usb.

I’m looking to upgrade to real headphones after my SteelSeries Sibera V2 are slowing breaking down and hurting my ears. I’m using these headphones for just about everything on my computer. I play a lot of FPS’s such as CS GO, watch some movies and tv shows, and listen to music. The two headphones I was interested in were the dt990 pros and the Audio Technica AUD ATHAD500X

 • Budget: Around $170 but would prefer lower unless the headphone is superb and will last and comfort me for years to come
 • Source: Only for Desktop Computer
 • Requirements for Isolation: Don’t need much isolation
 • Preferred Type of Headphone: Full sized
 • Preferred Music: Rap/Hip-hop, synth, 80s synth
 • Preferred tonal balance: not sure what I’d really like most, not really educated about all the different tones
 • What would you like to improve on from your set-up: Just looking to get an overall better quality of headphones, maybe more comfort since I’m on my computer for a lot of hours but must be good for gaming as it is what I mainly do.
 • Location: I live in the US.

Honestly, your motherboard sound plus an amp should be absolutely fine, unless you’re hearing any distortion or hiss. If you can go up to $300, then a combo of the Magni 2 (non Uber) and the Beyerdynamic DT-990s should be fantastic.

Nooope. 250Ohm. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0011UB9CQ?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00. Like, it’s loudish, but it’s at the highest right now and it’s a more than comfortable listening level.

Alright, that makes sense, would it be able to power the Berodynamic Dt 990 pro 250 ohms? (It would only be temporarily running without an amp)

Getting my first pair of good headphones for gaming, I think I’ve narrowed it down to:

Beyerdynamic DT990 250 ohm (Amazon)

Sennheiser HD598 (Amazon)

AKG K612 (Amazon)

Audio Technica AD900X (Amazon)

Vmoda Crossfade LP2 (Amazon)

I’m concerned mostly with impedance. My sound card says it “includes a headphone amplifier that supports headphones all the way up to 150ohm impedance,” without explicitly starting the output impedance. I’m currently leaning towards getting the 250 ohm DT990, so I’m wondering if exceeding the sound card’s stated 150 ohms would be detrimental.

Budget: $200, maybe a little over

Source: sound card, plugged into PC

Isolation: not much needed; I’ll be using these at home

Type: over-ear

Balance: overall balanced

Past headphones: only earbuds: Skull Candy Jib, LG Tone+

Preferences: these will be used primarily for gaming. As for music, I like stuff without lyrics: classical, jazz, techno/dub, soundtracks

Budget: $200

Source: PC using a little dot mk2

Isolation: none

Type: open back, over ear, comfortable

Tone: neutral

Past headphones: shure 550dj, senn hd 558

music: anything mostly rock, I play some games too

I’m looking for headphones that will actually put my amp to good use. Ive been looking at the beyerdynamics on amazon and they seem reasonable, the only problem is that there’s so many in the same price range. There are the dt990 pro, dt 770 pro. The lower impedance versions appear to cost more but it doesn’t matter to me. I might go for a different brand or get another sennheiser. I also need a dac to replace my shitty lexicon alpha im using as one, but it needs to only be a dac and give a line level output. I also need a mic that attaches to my headphones to replace the one attached to my lexicon that barley works with skype.

these are the audiophile headphones I have
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0011UB9CQ?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00
and I also use these for teamspeak http://www.amazon.com/HyperX-Cloud-Gaming-Headset-PS4/dp/B00SAYCVTQ/ref=sr_1_2?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1440025697&sr=1-2&keywords=hyperx+cloud+2

Do you have a site recommendation for case fans? I used tomshardware a lot for this build and they only had spotlights on CPU cooling that I saw.

It’s this headphone right?

Didn’t notice the Samson mic the first time, fellow Reckful fan?

Trying to decide between two headphones:

DT990 http://www.amazon.com/Beyerdynamic-DT-990-Pro-250-Professional-Acoustically-Applications/dp/B0011UB9CQ

HD 558 http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-558-Headphones/dp/B004FEEY9A/ref=pd_cp_e_1

I’m not really going to be doing much listening to music, I primarily will be using these for watching TV shows and movies. I’m upgrading from the Sony MDRV6. Just wanting to know whether the extra $70 for the DT990 is worth it or if I should go for the 558.

Also, what is the difference between DT990 Pro 250 ohm and DT990 premium 250 ohm?

Thank you!

I’ve been DJing for a few years now and I’ve had a pair of Pioneer HDJ-1000s for this. Lately, I’ve starting to produce dance music on ableton 9 (mostly techno and some house) and I’ve become very aware of my need for monitors or studio headphones for the mixdown/mastering process, as my current speakers or headphones probably wouldn’t do the job.

Currently, my living situation dictates that I can’t get monitors so was looking more into studio phones to prevent any complaints from neighbours. I’ve started looking at the Beyerdynamic DT990 PRO and have also been looking into a headphone amplifier in order to achieve better quality from these, though I’m unsure of how “good” the headphone amp would need to be. I’ve looked through guides for “the best headphone amplifiers” and stuff but cannot tell whether something like the Fiio E06 would work or whether I’d need something more? On the flipside, I’ve got an old Kenwood Stereo Integrated Amplifier KA-3020 Special Ediction for running my old speakers through, and wondered whether running my computer through this then plugging the headphones into the unit would work?

I’d only require the amp for use in my home so it wouldn’t need to be portable, however I don’t have a huge budget. I’d like to use the Fiio E06 if it were fit for purpose (due to the attractive price) but I don’t want to buy one if I don’t have to or buy one and not get the best flat sound from the headphones as I can.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Edit: I’m not particularly set on the Beyerdynamics either, if anyone can recommend a better pair for the same price or cheaper then that would be cool too. What about the AKG K240 MkIIs?

If you’re willing to consider an open headphone, Beyerdynamic’s DT990 ($180 for 250Ω variant, which would generally benefit from at least a cheap amp, review) has a very respectable soundstage, and a profoundly v-shaped sound. Lots of bass, lots of treble, very fun all around.

On the spectrum of closed cans, the best option for soundstage and a v (albeit a more mild v than the DT990’s canyon) would be Audio-Technica’s A900x ($150, review), though Beyer’s DT770 (available in 250Ω, 80Ω, and 32Ω variants for $200, $220, and $230 respectively, review) offer pretty solid sound quality, if not nearly the same degree of soundstage. The A900x is likely the best option for you, but I reckoned better to mention the Dt770s than omit them.

No worries about being an audio newbie, we were all new once. I will note, for the wide range of genres you list in the OP, some people, myself included, would favour a more neutral headphone. That’s a matter of personal preference, however, and it varies from person to person.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I’ve found the 250 OHM 990s for £111
here. This seems like a ridiculously good deal going by what you’ve said. Am I missing something?

The K702s are around £40 more, as per here.
As far as I can tell, there’s not a a huge difference between these and the Q701s.

Am I right in thinking that they have less of a pronounced bass response than the DT990s? Would you say the better positional is worth the extra? As it is, I’m leaning towards the DT990s.

Any headset $150+ that’s made for listening to music, not for gaming, and not made by Dre.

Something made by Audio-Technica, Hifiman, Beyerdynamic, hell even something made by Philips or Sony (and I don’t mean Sony Playstation) would be better than a gaming headset.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0011UB9CQ/?coliid=I2MOYDLFK8VZYV

If I were looking for gaming and streaming and serious about streaming, I’d probably get started with those. Now it’s worth mentioning, that you’ll need a dac/amp to use them. But again, if you’re serious about streaming, a dac/amp or even a mixer/amp is in your future.

If you ask me, you shouldn’t buy any ‘headset’ at all, if you really want one then buy the HyperX Cloud 1 or 2 from Kingston (The steelseries/Qpad Headsets are also okay). But if you have the money, buy some good headphones like these http://www.amazon.de/Beyerdynamic-DT-990-PRO-250-DT-990-Pro-Kopfh%C3%B6rer/dp/B0011UB9CQ/ref=pd_rhf_gw_s_cp_1_3MA2?ie=UTF8&refRID=101YBKY1ZJFTJCR8XY8Z with a 5.1/7.1 Soundcard and a seperate microphone. For keyboards I’d recommend a custom one, but that`s just preference, just make sure it has no ghosting issues (Iam currently using the Qpad MK-50, it has a reasonable price without those shiny lighting everywhere and is still very effective and precise). For the mice I suggests the Zowie FK 1 and if you have big hands, like me, go for some old Logitech mice (I have the old G400, but the deathadder is one exception of Razer products). If you play Counter Strike, or something similiar, you can absolutely trust me. My point about your gear is, Razer is the Apple of “gaming gear” you could say, their products are very expensive, they dont last very long, and are not as good as products from companies who are specialized in one thing (This especially goes for every Razer Headsets, I used several and they were all shitty and expensive). And of course I want to apologize for my bad english, and this long roman of answer. For more info about these stuff, just watch some Tek Syndikate on YT, imo their videos are quiet helpful.

DT990s are like $50 more. These Philips are 30ohms, the 990s are 80ohms and sound amazing. If you want quality audio, this isn’t it. However if you are cheap and uninformed, these might be for you.
