I have a Beyerdynamic DT 990 Premium 600 OHM Headphones. Does anybody know what they are worth? I’m only asking here because I was looking to trade them for a keyboard!

Heres a link: http://www.amazon.com/Beyerdynamic-990-Premium-600-Headphones/dp/B0024NK34O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1445704538&sr=8-1&keywords=dt+990+600ohm

I have decided on the “Beyerdynamic DT 990 Edition 600Ohm” Headphones. I’m having a hard time picking an AMP and DAC. I’ve done some reading and research and numbers aren’t my strong suit, having a hard time deciding what would be best and I was hoping I could get some help!

Maybe something else to consider, along with the DT990’s I’ll be purchasing a Blue Spark Blackout XL SLR Microphone to help complete my setup. If there is an AMP + DAC or Hybrid that will support both to help save on cost that would be fantastic!

Thanks in advance!

 • Budget – Variable, prefer under $150.00.
 • Source – My PC. (Ryzen7, MPG X570, RTX2070 Super, DDR4 16GB)
 • Requirements for Isolation – At home on my PC, primarily FPS games (Tarkov, Siege)
 • Will you be using these Headphones in Public? No.
 • Preferred Type of Headphone – Over Ear.
 • Preferred tonal balance – The “V” works well, thus why I chose these.
 • Past headphones -I’m switching over from Astro A40 w/ Mixamp.
 • Preferred Music – Any and all, truthfully.
 • What would you like to improve on from your set-up – Audio quality and volume, output currently to way to quiet.

I have the Nike 8063 frames which has some pretty stiff arms and the Beyer Dynamic DT 990 which have pretty soft padding allowing the frames to push into them. You might need to find a headset that just has some super soft padding so your thin frames can squish into them rather than the cans pushing your frames into your head.

 • Budget – $200 flexible, definitely not more than $300

 • Source – Xbox one, possibly a gaming pc in the future, iPad (I am open to using additional amps and/or DAC)

 • Requirements for Isolation – none

 • Will you be using these Headphones in Public? – no

 • Preferred Type of Headphone – full-sized over-ear

 • Preferred tonal balance – I’d like a smooth, audible mid-range, treble that is clear but not shrill, and bass that has a defined thump without overwhelming any other sounds. I wouldn’t call myself a basshead, but I’d like to be able to feel the power of an explosion in a movie.

 • Past headphones – AKG Y50BT. I liked the overall sound, but I want something with a wider soundstage for gaming.

 • Preferred music – I won’t be using these for music as much as for gaming or movies, but when I do listen to music I don’t stick to a particular genre, I listen to anything from Shelter to Gravity to Paradise to Mine.

I’ve considered the Beyerdynamic DT 990 Premium and the Sennheiser HD 598 SR, but I’m not sure if the 598 would have enough bass or if the 990 treble would be too shrill.

Thank you in advance for your advice! It’s greatly appreciated.

Hello!

I’ve picked up an O2+ODAC. I want to get the Beyerdynamic DT990 Premiums 250 or 600 ohms. The 600 ohms version is currently cheaper on amazon than the 250 ohm version. Is there any reason I shouldn’t get the 600 version to use with an O2+ODAC?

EDIT: For what its worth. I grabbed this: https://www.mayflowerelectronics.com/shop/digital-to-analog-converters/desktop-objective2-with-odac/

actually, there is a difference. I believe the 600 ohm version has the cable going into the cup with a different head vs the 32/250 ohm version. See:

So.. You buy a ~$25 pair of headphones and expect something amazing? With an onboard sound card? Onboard ones are usually pretty bad, they tend to pick up noise from other things on the motherboard.

I use an old Auzentech card I simply changed the amps in to OPA2134s cause the NE5532 chips really don’t sound good. Although, I think you can get better cards now.. Anyways, toss in one of these, some headphones, and then you don’t really need an EQ to compensate. You will get spoiled though.

Lots and lots of options. I’d agree that the bulk of $$ should be on the headphones, not the DAC/AMP. I’ve gone straight from the mobo to nice headphones and there was a huge difference even without DAC/AMP. My current amp is the XDuo TA-02, which adds color and fullness but is more of a bonus than a huge difference. Amps are truly necessary for headphones which won’t really work at all unless you pump the signal, and those headphones are usually well beyond your pricerange of $150. Here’s a popular example: Beyerdynamic DT990 600 ohm. For high-quality headphones that don’t really need an amp and sound great straight from a phone or out of the motherboard, take a look at the entry-class headphones from AKG, Sennheiser, Beyerdynamic, Audio Technica, etc. I’ve been enjoying the AKG K7xx, but it barely came out so the price is still high.

tl;dr: Spend the $150 on headphones alone as long as they aren’t high impedance, then get an amp once you’ve saved enough.
