These speakers get good reviews, especially for the price. Use them without the covers though, because they block the tweeter pretty bad. Sound Appeal 6.5-Inch Bookshelf Speakers https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00O17LP48/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_tfdWAbPA0AHPQ

Rears aren’t as important. You can cheap out and pick up something like these Sound Appeal speakers for $60 and really be fine.

I’d say the cheap Sound Appeal speakers are pretty convenient as surround speakers. Might as well get them from that third party seller for $45.

The reason you can run mismatched speakers as your surround channels without too much issue is because:

  1. Not a whole lot gets sent to the surround channels to begin with. There are exceptions to this but really the mix is normally front-loaded.

  2. You focus on the front soundstage where the screen is. Any time characters are walking across the screen/camera is panning the center should be timbre matched since sound will be blending from one speaker to the next. Again, that’s happening right where your focus is. Not the case with surrounds that are normally relegated to being effects and ambiance channels.

  3. 99% of Music you’ll encounter won’t use the surround channels to any degree at all.

For a long time I ran a mismatched center, left and rights, and surround speakers. Three different brands complete with different tweeter types lol.

Your budget is fairly low for a 5.1 system. Grab a cheap refurbished receiver from accessories4less.com. After shipping and taxes this receiver should run you $170.

The Pioneer BS-22 speakers are $90 a pair on Amazon right now. A BIC F12 subwoofer will run you $200. Add another $10 for speaker wire form Amazon. You’re at $500.

Add the matching center channel when budget allows. For surround speakers, purchase those last. These cheap Sound Appeal speakers work fine for surround duty because surround speakers really aren’t that important at your budget and these being front ported makes placement easier.

Let me know if your room isn’t small and I will give you an alternative to the Pioneer bookshelf speakers.

For the setup I layed out, you would have $90 for surrounds. When wall mounting, you want either front ported or sealed speakers, rear ported speakers usually need at least 1ft to sound their best (more distance if tower speakers). For a front-ported option, the Sound Appeals for $70 will do nicely ($63 “like new” option as well). For the full $90, the sealed Kanto Ben’s are great. I’d say get the Sound Appeals, so you save some money, as surrounds are not that important sound quality wise, they just need to be decent.

Trust me, this will be leagues better than that Onkyo setup. For me, I love bass, and that Onkyo setup just can’t get low or powerful, the opening title sequence to Edge of Tomorrow is crazy, Interstellar has great bass, and this song by Russ is insane for the chorus (it’s only 34Hz, but it’s so good).

Excellent, thanks a ton for your attention to my post, it’s much appreciated. My big concern right now is getting stuck for days in analysis paralysis, which I have a tendency to. I think I’m going to order the NHT speakers you linked to, and put them in the 19″x30″ squares in my photo from above.

From the buying guide in the sidebar I found these speakers for the rear that I think would fill the space nicely. Thoughts on that?

The 16’x14′ room is wired for a sub in one back corner. would the PL-200 be a short sighted choice? Thanks again.

I’ve read good things about this set in that price range http://www.amazon.com/Premium-Bookshelf-Speakers-Sound-Appeal/dp/B00O17LP48
