Speakers around $250…. hmm…
Your best option is probably the Audioengine A2 powered speakers. https://www.amazon.com/Audioengine-A2-Powered-Speaker-System/dp/B00DQMJE7E/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1497648870&sr=8-3&keywords=Audioengine+A

I’d like to find a full 2.1 shelf system with all digital inputs. USB input for connecting to a Raspberry Pi (like this), and optical for my TV.
Do these exist on the market?
·
If you want to keep it simple and don’t want to bother with surround speakers or a subwoofer, I would recommend a simple pair of powered bookshelf speakers. These do not require a receiver and would plug directly into your Apple TV.
Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Audioengine-A2-Powered-Speaker-System/dp/B00DQMJE7E

Under $150 is a hard area to recommend. Most people will tell you here that you’d be much better off saving a bit more. These speakers are a very good value for money. You can even use a usb input in case your computer is noisy. They also have 3.5mm input so no adapter needed. If you can save a bit more, the bigger brothers to these speakers, the A5+ offer a very big step up in performance. Overall though I don’t think I personally would recommend anything less than these speakers.
·
That’s not a terrible system but usually the problem with 2.1 setups under $200 is the sub is really not very good. I’m not too knowledgeable on what active speakers are out there but I would get a pair of nice powered monitors for $120 or more and then get a sub later once you could afford it, rather than buying it all at once.
I do know the Audioengine A2+ is a very popular choice though it’s usually in the $230-$250 range. Maybe could catch it on sale if you’re willing to wait.
·
budget? I have A2+, no amp needed. They sound decent clarity at low volume to my ear. Suffer at high volume
·
Interesting, that’s two recommendations for the Micca PB42x’s =). That might be how I’m going.
In terms of the input, I guess I’ll use the normal 3.5mm audio jack.
Does it matter that I’m not using the TOS-Link/Optical out on the Chromecast Audio? As in, is there any noticeable difference, versus using an analogue out?
Also, I saw some good reviews for the AudioEngine A2+:
http://www.amazon.com/Audioengine-A2-Premium-Powered-Speakers/dp/B00DQMJE7E
(It is a bit above budget though, at $249)
Any thoughts on how you think that compares to the PB42x, or the JBL305?
·
If your just looking for a small setup simular to the MICCA’s you may want to check out AudioEngine A2 or A5’s They are powered and sound great. Again it all depends on budget and how much room you want to take up.
·
Honestly, I’ve got the Klipsch ProMedia, they’re cheap, they’re decent looking, and they sound pretty good.
I was bouncing around for awhile and was eyeing the Audioengine A2+ but opted for the cheap side.
I picked them up at Best Buy for like $100
·
Audioengine a2 its in your price range, sounds amazing for their size and includes a built in amplifier. This is really good if you don’t want a bunch of large audio gear under your TV.
Audioengine A2+ Premium Powered Desktop Speakers – Pair (Black) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DQMJE7E/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_Lnplwb36TAZS4
·
Audioengine A2, they’re pretty great, and very small. I have them on the rubber stands that Audioengine makes and the total height is just under 7.5 inches, which is fairly easy to work around. Bass reproduction is amazing for the size, and they get fairly loud. Actually louder than they need to be, since you’ll be sitting right there.
Edit: oops, forgot to link them http://www.amazon.com/Audioengine-A2-Premium-Powered-Speakers/dp/B00DQMJE7E/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1442882392&sr=8-1&keywords=audioengine+a2
·
Take a look at the Audioengine A2+. A little over your price range at $250, but I have had mine for 4 years and have always been happy with my purchase.
Edit: Link!
·
To save people from looking… 230 euros = $250 USD
IMO, if your only sources are your PC and iPod, your best bet would be the Audioengine A2s. Right at the top of your price range, but you really can’t do better for the price.

So, my old Logitech Z623 (which I liked, mostly) has a broken cable (proprietary), and I’m looking to buy something new and preferably similar. I’m not a big audiophile, and I don’t plan on becoming one (already have too many expensive hobbies..).
The thing I liked a lot about these is the bass. I like having lots of bass in the music I listen to.
My budget is about 100€, and I would prefer if it was available on amazon.co.uk.
I would love if someone could also explain the differences between a 2.1 setup (like the one I have), and having something like this. How would it compare? What’s the bass like?
I know I sound like just any typical non-audiophile person but I simply can’t afford getting addicted to quality sound. So yes, you might not share my opinion of loud bass, but I hope you can understand that.
Thanks.

You’re making it complicated. What’s your reason for wanting to use USB rather than just the normal 3.5 stereo jack/RCA audio out of your PC?
The interface you’ve linked is designed for recording from a mic or instrument into some recording software like Ableton, it’s not for using the USB out of your PC to hook up a pair of speakers.
Why do you specifically want studio monitors? Again these are designed to be used in a recording environment and from what I can tell you just want to use them to play music. You’d be better served with a decent pair of PC speakers. I’ll link some suggestions that I think will work well for you for around $200.
The Bose Companion 20 speakers are excellent for the price and you will not be disappointed, I’ve used a pair for a long time.
I didn’t know this but the Audioengine A2+ can actually be used via USB and comes with the relevant USB A to USB B cable, I haven’t heard a pair but they get excellent reviews. This might be the pair to go for if you absolutely want to use USB.
Another system that gets excellent reviews is the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 and has the added benefit of including bluetooth so you could play music from your phone etc. as well if you wanted.
The other way to do it would be with a small stereo amplifier and a pair of bookshelf speakers, this will definitely cost quite a bit more than $200 for a decent set up though and I think using a pair of powered PC speakers will just be easier for you so I won’t bother with any suggestions of amps and bookshelf speakers.
Hope this helps!

May I suggest the Audio Enging A2+?

For just listening to music This would be my pick for under $300:
Audioengine A2+ Black (Pr.) 2-way Powered Speaker System https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DQMJE7E/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_Mu1XybWQR35WH

Get a pair of AudioEngines https://www.amazon.com/Audioengine-A2-Powered-Speaker-System/dp/B00DQMJE7E/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1480995913&sr=8-1&keywords=audioengine and throw a CCA on the back of it.
·
I am new to buying decent speakers, in the past I have only had logitech systems. I am looking at purchasing the Audioengine A2+ speakers and wanted to know if the yamaha YST-SW012 sub can connected to them and if so how, or if not what connections I would need to make the setup work with an external sub. Also if anyone has alternative suggestions for a sub I am open to hearing them.
·
I would also like the answer to this question…. I’ve been looking at these three if it helps, if anyone could advise that would be great 🙂
·
Ideally no more than £200 so your recommendation falls into that.
Presuming you mean these? https://www.amazon.co.uk/Audioengine-A2-Powered-Desktop-Speakers/dp/B00DQMJE7E/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1470243757&sr=8-2&keywords=Audioengine
I also had these heavily recommended to me by the guys at RicherSound however I can’t really find anywhere else selling them and can’t find reviews elsewhere so not really trusting them on that..

What would get me a better sound, regardless of the option to upgrade the speakers if I got the receiver?
or
Yamaha R-S201BL and Pioneer SP-BS22-LR
And with the Audioengines would I be able to plug my headphones into the RCA output with the necessary cable?
·
^That’s ^why ^I’m ^here, ^I ^don’t ^judge ^you. ^PM ^/u/xl0 ^if ^I’m ^causing ^any ^trouble. ^WUT?

So I’ve decided on this turntable . This has a phono preamp so is it true that I can connect them directly to the speakers, as they now have the same voltage as line level? If so, how do I control volume without a receiver?
I’m looking for a set of speakers (max £200) that are small enough to fit on my desk as I’m moving away for uni. I’ve seen the Audioengine A2+ which seem kind of good, and the Q Acoustics 2020i . I listen to music that has an emphasis on sub bass if that helps. What else could I get at this budget?

Audioengine A2+ Premium Powered Desktop Speakers (http://www.amazon.com/Audioengine-A2-Premium-Powered-Speakers/dp/B00DQMJE7E)
·
All good mate, here to help.
Ok, so if you get the LP120 turntable then all you will need is something like this, which is highly regarded: http://www.amazon.com/Audioengine-A2-Premium-Powered-Speakers/dp/B00DQMJE7E
Now for a little trick, most powered speakers have the volume adjustment on the back, so you can buy something like this cheap little controller, put it between the turntable and the speaker, and be able to control it, this one is $7 http://www.amazon.com/Axxess-AALC-Controller-Discontinued-Manufacturer/dp/B003FPD3IS
·
Also if you do decide to go with the powered speakers route which I would recommend in this scenario, something like the Audioengine A2+ Speakers would work.
·
If I were you, I would pick up a pair of Audioengine A2+. They are a fantastic powered 2.0 that puts out excellent sound for movies and music. https://www.amazon.com/Audioengine-A2-Powered-Speaker-System/dp/B00DQMJE7E
Down the road, you could always add the S8 subwoofer to make a proper 2.1 system for those lowest notes. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0013J1DI0/
Enjoy!

Audioengine A2+
It’s right on budget and they’re desktop / manager friendly.
As an alternative, you can do what I did. T-class amp connected to a couple old surround satellites (Total cost $40). They sound decent enough but lack low-end. That’s not a problem in my office though since I still need to hear my surroundings.
