>In terms of streaming audio v playing audio from native storage, how many hoops of compression does the audio have to jump through?
Unfortunately, I don’t know what kind of compression each streaming service is using, if any. Most claim they stream MP3 320s to you if you have the HQ option enabled, but I’m unsure if they’re compressing it further. Personally, I have my music stored locally and only stream at work while using lesser, closed back headphones for music discovery (I’m awful at keeping track of new releases and finding new artists). My priority at work is comfort for 6-8 hours of listening and price in case they disappear overnight. So I have the NVX XPT100s with the enormous, angled pads. Wearing them is like being caressed by a cloud, but the sound is just mediocre.
For the Bose QC35 II, they don’t support advanced codecs, only SBC and AAC. If you’re using an iPhone AAC can be fine if your music is stored as AAC. For Androids, I’d recommend the ATH DSR7BT if you like the ATH brand sound, since they support AptX HD and are cheaper. I believe the QC35s are better for noise canceling through, and have the Assistant integration. For me, I value audio quality more, so I’d go with the DSR7BTs but your priorities may be different.
