Also on sale at Amazon for $88.13, an all time low for Amazon.

For general listening, these headphones are quite good but I prefer other cans. For competitive gaming, I think these are the best you can get for under $400. The soundstage on these are enormous.

Your Budget is too low for “good headphones.” My recommendation would be to see if you can find used Sennheiser HD 598’s on ebay or amazon, there might be some in your range. That being said, the sound in CS:GO is complete aids, I have a fairly high end audio setup, analog amps and a nice DAC with hifiman 400’s and it doesn’t sound any better or give me any kind of advantage over my GF’s $40 gaming headset. If you also want to listen to music and or you want generally nice headphones see if you can find those HD 598’s used or maybe some audiotechnica ATH-AD700X’s used or cheap on amazon. If you just want to play, literally any old headset will do.

Edit: https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-AD700X-Audiophile-Headphones/dp/B009S332TQ/ref=sr_1_10?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1480526181&sr=1-10&keywords=audio+technica

didn’t realize how cheap these are right now, try these ^^ Great high end treble that will help make out footsteps.

Honestly I spent the $300 on it and don’t regret it but if I were to do it again, now knowing that I’d make the transition to pc, I’d buy a separate headset and mic. I’d look into maybe Audio Technicas as that’s what I’d look at for my next headset. Operator Drewski on YouTube uses these headphones specifically. I don’t know if you need amp to go with these honestly. But I see some people not recommending these for gaming in reviews and QnAs but if it’s good enough for somebody who plays milsim/shooter games like tarkov and arma they’d prob be good for me 🙂

The 700x’s are almost 50% off on Amazon right now.

https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-AD700X-Audiophile-Headphones/dp/B009S332TQ

Those are objectively the “best” out of those three, but would also be the most expensive. The Cloud 2 is the only headset though, the other two don’t have mics.

Audio-Technica ATH-AD700X… https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009S332TQ?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Have had these for about 2-3 weeks now. These are probably the best or one of the best for hearing footsteps (open back headsets) and they’re about $100 cheaper than the hd 599 or dt 990.

I pretty much bought the 3 suggested items that Amazon recommends, headphones with modmic 5 and the ek10 dac and it’s great. Headband is weird but it’s been fine for me. Mic sounds great, and the dac is good for me since I can really crank up the volume and power headphones to fullest potential (I leave the dac around 5 I think), but, depending on your mobo, you might not need it for these. These do lack in bass some, hence why so good for footsteps, but the dac has a bass boost switch on the front that I use when listening to music and its sounds great.

I was using a logitech 930 and wanted a wired (had a lot of disconnects when gaming) quality headset specifically for r6. Super happy with these. A lot of the reviews specifically mention fps or even r6 as their usage too.

I’ve been VERY happy with my Audio Technica AD700X headphones. It’s budget friendly and a god send for footsteps! Has great audio as well. Only two negatives is that you’ll have to find a mic to go with it and it’s lacking about 90% of bass if that’s your thing. I personally don’t mind the bass because the audio reproduction is excellent anyways.

How heavy are them? because one complaint i had on the g533 was they would hurt the top of my head after a while, its why i bought these https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009S332TQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

but now I miss the wireless part of the g533 and ordered these hyper x

Nearly unmatched soundstage gives you great positional audio. In everthing but quake champions that is, sound in this game is trash.

I like big round ear cups that rest on my head. Otherwise they press on my cartilage rings and make my ears hurt. Narrow ear cups and on-ear cups are hell.

I’m currently using Audio Technica ATH-AD700X at my PC. They’re great, though the split headband thing is kind of weird. I ended up tying the two ends together with a velcro cable strap.

audio technica ATH-AD700X

i have the ath-ad700 and i love these headphones. open back circumaural headphones (over ear). comfortable and light on my head and i can wear them for hours.

soundstage is great though if you use them for music, it’s a little lacking in the bass. but i cannot say enough good things about the soundstage. it’s about $101 on the link from amazon i posted.

i always recommend these versus any “gaming” headset because of the soundstage and comfort. i got these because of a recommended thread off of head-fi.org from mad lust envy.

here’s what he says on the ad700 (the ad700x just being the newer version)

>Spectacular for FPS games. Great detail in the mids and energetic treble. Soundstage is the biggest of any headphone I have heard in Dolby Headphone mode (including the K701). Everything sounds just so crystal clear and sparkly. Directional accuracy is just bloody fantastic (2nd only to the DT770 Pro 80s for me). If you want a headphone that just murders practically everything else for FPS games, the AD700s is that headphone.

he does point out that unless it’s for gaming, these aren’t worth it since it is so bass light. but for a gaming perspective, i think these are one of the best.

The ATH-AD700x is often held up as one of the best gaming headphones. I’ve demoed the AD500x and it was impressive, especially for the price. Obviously not a headset, you’d need to get a modmic or some kind of external solution to go with it.

I am looking to buy some new headphones and I’ve been looking at these Audio Technica ATH-AD500X and ATH-AD700X open back headphones, considering my current ones are falling apart and that I just want some better headphones. These headphones will stay at my computer desk.

I just have several questions about these headphones and headphones in general.

  • How much sound leaks out of open-back headphones? I have a separate microphone which is the Yeti Blue I believe, if important. I often talk with friends on Discord and record so this is very important to me.

  • Is sound quality or “sound stage” really that improved with open-backs?

  • If these open-backs aren’t good or whatever, what are some other choices? I’m talking comfort, sound, etc…

The 700x are on sale for $88. Guys, if you want probably the best soundstage out of any headphone under $400, this is it. I’m not a huge fan of it for general listening compared to my other cans, but my god are these amazing for competitive gaming.

In my opinion, there is not best pair of headphones, at any price range. Ideally you’d find a shop that you could visit and audition several headphone models, from different brands.

Now, for gaming I like to use open headphones, so that’s what I’m going to recommend. I’m going to assume that you’ll connect the headphones directly to your PC. And you mentioned that you want the headphones to be comfortable while wearing glasses.

With that in mind, I’d recommend you try to audition the Audio Technica ATH-AD700X and see how you like them. If that’s not possible, they’re $102 on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-AD700X-Audiophile-Headphones/dp/B009S332TQ/

I can’t speak for you, but I could only go by what see in the pic. Personally, I only own Zeros. Though I did used to own PC360s(closed-back) which the Ones bare the most similarity to.

However, with the latter being open-back, makes them seem odd to me. They don’t look very open at all, at least compared to Audio Techincas for example.

I’m not a headphones guy, but I think open back headphones perform better than closed back. Of course they won’t isolate sound like closed back do. /r/Zeos could help you out.

Open air headphones like these are not “in ear”. Are you looking for earbuds (typically what In-Ear Monitors are called)? If you’ve got a big budget, ask around on /r/headphones.

-Why are you buying the HTC Vive over the Oculus Rift?

Not buying it over the Rift, I have already ordered both

-What is your favourite feature(s) in the HTC Vive that may not be present/as prominent in the Oculus Rift?

included controllers

-What do you think of HTC and Valve as companies? Do you prefer them over Oculus/Facebook, and why?

all are great as far as companies go.

-What (if anything) do you wish that the HTC Vive had that may be missing from the HMD at launch?

Built in headphones. Not having this almost made me not order it. My max went from $999 to $800 when I found out that there were no headphones. I still ended up ordering and bought some decent headphones that are suppose to have a similar audio profile to the included ones on the Rift.

-What game(s) are you most excited to play on the HTC Vive?

Tilt Brush, Hover Junkers, Windlands, Arizona sunshine

Ok so do you think with open headphones, like these, I would be able to hear myself speak at least? My wife keeps on getting angry with me talking loudly when I have a game going with my headsets. So I need something to where I can hear myself at least and not shout.

try these http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-AD700X-Audiophile-Headphones/dp/B009S332TQ
they are very comfortable to the point where you forget that you have them on. i wear glasses and those headphones have a very flexible and soft earpads. does not hurt or irritate. best headphones for directional sound accuracy. cons: little bass if you are into that. no mic. open air design which will cause sound bleed but gives you a more natural sound.

Headsets mostly suck, get headphones + mic instead.

Do you want open or closed?

On-ear or over-ear?

Any preference to sound signature?

AD700x, these will be better than ALL the headsets, but they are open.

1 point

·

20th Jun 2015

Open back headphones give you a much wider sound stage as the sound is free to “fly” and not trapped between the cans and your ears. This gives sound much closer to reference sound (but can be tweaked to a more enjoyable listening experience of course)

I personally own both a pair of the ATH-M50X’s and a pair of ATH-AD700X which I use when I’m enjoying a solo gaming session with my favorite action/adventure open worlder haha.

They’re great for immersion and positional audio as, again, the sound stage is much wider. Though if you’re after a bassy sound signature the M50(x)’s are definitely the way to go, and open back WILL leak sound into the room, and you will be able to hear much more around you in the real world so if you’re not in a room by yourself they’re not the right choice.

/r/headphones and /r/audio can definitely give you a better explaination than me though.

Get a proper 16gb kit of ram, as it’s going to be cheaper. I would suggest that you don’t spend that much on a microphone, as you’d be just fine with a Modmic 4,0 and a nice set of headphones. For about 120 dollars you can get these http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-AD700X-Audiophile-Headphones/dp/B009S332TQ, these are one of the best headphones for gaming.

·

m50s sound nice but there are better value options and due to the closed design will not have a large sound stage. This means that the positional audio will be worse meaning you wont be able to figure out where footsteps etc. are coming from as well as an open set of headphonesIf you just want headphones for gaming at home then these are slightly cheaper and will work better for gaming

If you are looking for a headset you should consider headphones as an alternative. Massdrop got the HiFiMAN HE-350 for 100 bucks right now. Newegg got the Philips SHP9500S for 50 bucks.
Amazon has the Audio Technica AD700X for 103$.

Why would you buy a headset? They have poor quality, are prone to breaking frequently (usually by having either the cup on the microphone side dying or the headband snapping) and offer bad sound quality for the price as the majority of the budget goes towards “gamer” advertising and gimmicky design.

I believe the average PCMR member is very knowledgeable on hardware, gpus, monitors, keyboards etc but overlooks treating his ears appropriately.

I’d wager it’s the headset. A good pair of headphones and a $30 mic will outperform most headsets for the same price. I use these (Got a pair for $80 used on amazon) and this and it all works great.

That pair of headphones are a personal choice. I listen to lots of acoustic music and prefer the open-back sound so probably not the best for gaming but they work for my uses.

Logitech stuff is basically bottom of the bucket. You won’t find anyone recommending those, unless it’s the only headphones they’ve ever tried.

The Arctic 7 is decent, but, you can get significantly better headphones, for less money, if you choose a wired option like the Sennheiser PC37x (which has a mic built in) or Audio Technica AD700x (no mic), and both will work just fine without a DAC/Amp.

Those wings are pretty exclusive to Audio Technica. The closest thing is the ATH-AD700X.

They make a 900X for slightly better sound quality if you’re interested. Of course, neither come with a mic but I have a solution for that too. If you go on the Antlion website https://antlionaudio.com/collections/microphones there are microphones with a variety of connection options; wireless, USB, and the UNI is 3.5 mm. You can use this https://www.amazon.com/Headphone-MillSO-Splitter-Compatible-Smartphone/dp/B0788M8W77 to combine the headphones and 3.5 mic into one TRRS 3.5 mm. (TRX connectors are used for connecting Li-po batteries, not audio).

Also… don’t worry about ohms until you educate yourself about them and db sensitivity… and other things. Ohms are meaningless on their own when it comes to sound quality, they are only make sense when you look at all the specs.

Not OP, but I very much enjoy the sound of the HD600’s. super easy to listen to and not harsh at all. Kind of expensive, since you need an aplifier to get the best sound of them, which just adds to the price. I have a few recommendations for under 150 dollar headphones.

If you’re looking for some great open back headphones, I recommend the AD-700X. Very open, with an airy sound. I enjoy them the most for vocals. not much bass, however. I also really enjoy these for gaming. the design of them is a odd for headphones so they might not be the best fit for your head.

Another option is the SHP9500. also open and similar to the HD600’s in that they handle almost all music well. Can’t really complain on how they handle most things, except for maybe bass heavy music. All around good headphones. Super comfortable to wear too.

If you want some closed headphones, I recommend the DT-770’s 80 Ohm. not as easy to drive as the 32 Ohm version, but still should be fine with almost anything. If you plan on getting an amp, get the 250 Ohm version. I love these because the bass response is absolutely fantastic. If you enjoy EDM, hiphop, or any genre that is bass heavy, these are a no brianer. these have fantastic sub bass that doesn’t muddy up the vocals. Maybe not the best for all genre types, as the higher frequencies can be fatiguing for some people.

If you’re looking for a AMP to start off with, I recommend the FiiO E10K. cheap, and powerful enough to drive most headphones, unless they’re very power demanding like the HD600’s. If you want to go all out, getting a Schiit Stack like OP, or an ODAC combo works too. that’s gonna be like 200+ though, so I recommend starting with something smaller.

Also, be sure to use Amazon’s warehouse deals to get a “used” pair of any of these if you can. save some money on it, and if they’re broken or damaged, amazon will gladly refund you. really is a money saver.

I would split your budget to get two headphones for dedicated use.

  1. a. Gaming Headphone => Since you mainly listed FPS titles that require you to pin point footsteps and shots, I would recommend the Audio Technica ATH AD 700x (AD700x Amazon Link) for $92. These headphones are well respected and loved for FPS titles with the same requirements as yours. They don’t need an amp and can be driven from your motherboard with ease.
    b. Gaming microphone => Get the ModMic 4.0 (ModMic 4.0 Amazon Link) for $50. These are great and can be driven using your motherboard. However I would suggest pairing them with something like this (USB Sound Amazon Link) for best results – add another $15 for this.

  2. Music and movies headphone => Get something like the HD 599 (HD 599 Amazon Link) from Sennheiser if you want good balanced sound without breaking the bank. They are easy to drive using your mobo and if you get an amp down the line they will increase the volume of these headphones. These cans are like $149 now.

So you will be spending $157 for the gaming headphone and mic and $148 for the music/movies headphone. I know this has a huge drawback of switching headphones when you want to do either, but you can also use the HD 599 for gaming as it has good imaging. The sound stage is not as wide as the AD700x but it is still good enough for positioning shots. However this will give you the (relatively) best of both worlds for your budget. 🙂

Hello everyone my current headphones are breaking and it’s ok they were cheap stuff that I bought out of need when I had no money and they were decent enough, but now I could spend a 200 euro budget. I will use them mostly for gaming and hearing music while playing or just in general like watching shows on Netflix and whatnot but no complicated stuff I don’t produce music etc.

Now what I’m afraid of is that last time I bought a pair of headphones from a suggestion they were pretty awful they were 40 euro and the quality was terrible and it made me die inside when I checked some music and I couldn’t hear any bass and everything sounded the same… Imagine a popular song like Evanescence – Bring Me To Life or any metal / rock stuff and you can’t feel the change in the music… Idk how to say it in english but I guess they lacked bass or lows? even my next 15 euro headphones were better.

So I wanted to be specific as possible with my little knowledge:

  • They must have a good audio quality for any type of song, be it rock / metal / jazz / lyrics idk anime music? I listen to anything.
  • I need to hear footsteps sound direction in FPS games, currently in Cs;Go that I play just for fun at the moment I can’t even hear where they come from it’s a mess and in TV shows or other games the sound are meh.
  • I would like them to be on Amazon and I can’t take ships from outside Europe, last time I tried for my Keyboard I spent more on shipping than the Keyboard. But it’s ok just type the name and I’ll search them in my country.
  • If possible I prefer ones that isolate me (?) there’s some noises in my house between random birds chipping really loud and my neighbors who talk really loud in their backyard and I have to keep the windows open cause it’s starting to get hot around here so if they don’t isolate me I won’t be able to play games or watch Shows without really high volume.
  • I don’t need a microphone and no USB I heard without a cable the sound quality is way lower and “gaming” stuff is expensive for no reason

Here some that I found most recommended around my budget: (yes in Italy feel free to search them in Amazon.it query)

Audio-Technica ATH-AD700X

Audio Technica ATH-M50X

(yes in Italy feel free to search them in Amazon.it)

The others were way higher like sennheiser stuff around 500 euro or more, and people were suggesting download some files to improve audio quality? I’m a complete noob so idk if that’s a thing or I got misslead but if there are better cables than the ones the headphones come with or some specific options to improve quality (idk anything about hz if they should be higher or lower) let me know thank you!

These are popular $100-200 open air headphones often cited for gaming and can be powered with normal jacks without need of amps.

  • Audio-Technica ATH-AD700X or AD900X. — Huge soundstage and low bass to help directional sound. Also great for any music that isn’t bassy and want to fell like sitting in a big room. AD700X can be had on sale sometimes under $100. The AD900X is the more expensive upgraded brother.
  • Philips Fidelio X2/X2HR — Large soundstage and decent bass. Great all rounder gaming/movies. Also great for listening to bassy modern/mainstream music. The X2 can be had cheaper sometimes on sale for $100. X2HR is just the newer improved design that fixes some durability issues. They sound the same.
  • Massdrop x Sennheiser HD 58X Jubilee — Narrower soundstage, but super accurate sound imaging aka knowing exact direction of audio. Huge Soundstage isn’t everything. Also great for listening to vocal/classical music where you want super clear sound. These are $300-400 HD600 headphones rebranded by massdrop. Huge bargain at $150.

This isn’t entirely accurate. Headphones can play a huge factor in sound imaging. Some are for sure better than others. Software does come into play, but IMO you would want to look for headphones that have great imaging, as well as sound stage, for accuracy. For a cheaper headphone that has some of the best imaging and sound stage you can get, albeit lacking punchy bass, the Audio Technica ATH-AD700X’s are phenomenal for the price.

I’ve tried a number of different headphones with the Rift S and so far these have the best sound quality I’ve found.https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-AD700X-Audiophile-Open-Air-Headphones/dp/B009S332TQ

The only downsides I’ve experienced is the cord is long (I tie up the extra slack), and I typically need to tilt the headset forward before putting on the headphones to make room before adjusting the fit.

Edit: Here’s an article where these headphones are mentioned as comparing to the open soundstage of the original rift headphones. https://www.digitaltrends.com/virtual-reality/oculus-rift-built-in-headphones/

The Audio-Technica AD700s are pretty great openbacks for gaming. I loved the closedbacks I had long ago. I use a pair of AD900s now.

For open back gaming headphones I suggest the AD700x’s hands down. Extremely crisp sound for a high amount of detail (think hearing footsteps very clearly). Easily my first choice.

If you want something closed back the M40X’s aren’t a bad choice either. They’re pretty neutral sounding with no strong emphasis on bass or treble but will give a good sound in most situations including gaming.

Forgive me I’m a pleb at audio stuff, but I’m here because I need some help.
My old Logitech G430 headset broke a few weeks ago, and I decided that instead of buying a “gaming headset”, I’d go for a pair of headphones, and an attachable microphone.
So far, I’ve chosen the Antlion Modmic 4.0 as the mic, but I’m not sure about the headphones yet. I’m looking for around 100-120$ price range. It would mostly be used for gaming, and a bit of music as well (every genre)
I was thinking about getting these, since they are currently half the price off: https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-AD700X-Audiophile-Headphones/dp/B009S332TQ
Or should I go with these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Audio-Technica-ATH-M40X-Professional-Headphones-Black/dp/B00HVLUR54 ?
Some help would be greatly appreciated, or if you have some other recommendations, please comment them.

Audio-Technica makes audiophile-grade sound equipment. I’ve personally got an ATH-AD700 (original). They’re open back, and they have an amazing sound stage and a fan-fucking-tastic comfort level. The new one, ATH-AD700x, are $100, or $80 used. They don’t have an included microphone, but you can snag a ModMic for like $45-50.

Later down the road, you can pair it with some kind of mixer with equalization and compression if you want.

If you want an all-in-one type thing, you can also spring for the ATH-PG1.

These headphones/headsets will be a hundred times better than the Astros, Turtle Beaches, HyperX, Steelseries, etc. I will say, though, that at $120, you’re limiting yourself a little bit. Most of what you’ll get, even from audiophile-type manufacturers, will be on the lower-end of the hi-fi stuff.

EDIT: I didn’t really mention prices because I’m from the UK and pricing over here is weird, some things are a lot more expensive here than they would be in the US for example.

Good heaphones generally aren’t also affordable. For headsets I’d say the best head*set* as in, also with a mic attached, the Sennheiser PC360s are probably the best I have used. I don’t think I’ve ever heard a headset that is has as clear directional cues and with such a large soundstage. It’s pretty well balanced too so nothing is too overbearing, as an example I used to have Turtle Beach….

I forget which ones exactly, I think X11s? Those had really, really overbearing treble and made every sound like it was in a tin can. That’s great for picking out the higher pitched footsteps in a game like CoD. Bad for movies and music though. I assume the newer versions are better in that regard because it was a pretty common complaint.

Anyway, the Senns also have pretty decent front and back positional cues, which isn’t something you really find too often. It’s definitely the hardest part of directional cues to nail down. They are super clear as well, if I’m listening to something like a live recording of an orchestra, it’s really easy to pick out the location of each instrument (assuming the room acoustics are okay) and tell them apart rather than them kind of blending too much.

The only complaint I have about them is that the bass isn’t really too punchy (which I like) due to the open back nature and their focus on a balanced audio spectrum. Still by far the best headset I have ever used.

If you want something specifically for FPS these are pretty amazing. They don’t come with a mic so you’d have to buy a clip-on mic or something but those are fairly cheap and it’s nice to be able to take it off when you don’t need it.

The highs are nice and pronounced, and mids on these from what I remember (I never owned them, used at a friend’s place for a few days at a LAN) have excellent detail to them. The soundstage is huge too (in Dolby Headphone mode) which is great because obviously a bigger soundstage makes it easier to discern the direction of audio.

I wouldn’t recommend them for anything other than tryhard FPS though, the bass is honestly not good at all, so it isn’t going to be good for movies or music, and because of the focus on the higher end, they sound… Nothing will sound ‘real’ through these. They definitely aren’t good for immersive audio.

Since I’m pretty tired and don’t want to write any more I would say check out this buyer’s guide from /r/headphones. Specifically I can recommend the Audio Technica M50Xs. They are really popular. I’ve never personally used them but I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone have much to say negatively about them. They might require a bit of an amp though so if you don’t already have a headphone amp they might not sound as good as they potentially can. Also, they are apparently a little bassy, so if soundwhoring is what you’re after they might not be perfect for that. Also, closed back, so they will have a tighter soundstage but from everything I’ve heard about them, they still sound great. Some people even prefer the sound of closed back headphones, I don’t personally, but audio is a fairly subjective thing at the end of the day. What I used to do was order headphones from Amazon, try them out for a day or so, then return them and rinse and repeat. Not sure if Amazon would still allow you to return as often as I did these days but it’s possibly an option. If it is possible to try out headphones before committing I’d definitely say you should.

get a nice pair of studio head phones for less and buy a mod mic.

These are my headphones for example ( I did go a little more on the pricey side though but you can find something just as good or better than “gaming headsets” for less):
https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-AD700X-Audiophile-Headphones/dp/B009S332TQ/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1484217515&sr=8-14&keywords=audio+technica

You get more bang for your buck if you do the research. You can find better sounding headphones for less and the mod mic sounds amazing and clear.

I’m new to all this and I want to ditch my headset. That means I’m looking for headphones + a ModMic. Thanks to the resources on this subreddit, I’ve narrowed my headphone choices down to the Audio Technica ATH-AD700X and the AKG K 240.

28th Oct 2016

I’d recommend the Audio Technica AD700x for around $100. It is an open back headset, which means the sound stage is incredible, you can pin point every bullet or granade, just what you’re looking for. BUT, being open back sound will leak A LOT, so if you play mostly at night or you need something that doesn’t disturb people then this is not for you

In that case you can buy Audio Technica M50x with amp for $150. This one is closed back, that means sound will not leak at all, but sound stage (or Surround sound, like you called it) will be non existant. It is an amazin headphone for music, and you can of course game with it, but nowhere near the level of stage you’d get out of an open back.

As you can probably tell by now. Your headphones being mid-range will need an amp, which the M50x already has, if you decide to buy the AD700x then I’d recomend a lower end amp, something cheap but useful, I have a Sound Blaster E1 and it works just fine for around $50

Hope that helps 🙂

Audio Technica ATH-AD700X (https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-AD700X-Audiophile-Headphones/dp/B009S332TQ)

ModMic 4.0 (http://www.modmic.com/products/modmic-4-0)

It will cost you around $150. The mic is amazing and you can remove it when you don’t need it or use it on different headphones in the future if you decide to upgrade.

The headphones are the most comfortable headphones I have ever used, the sound stage ( ability produce sounds that allows you to perceive width and spaciousness) is huge. They are open backed so you will be able to hear other sounds in the room and anyone else will be able to hear your game. The mids and highes are great but there is huge lack of bass. This isn’t great for most music but will be huge for hearing footsteps in games.

  • Budget: ~$150 USD
  • Source: PC (Gaming), if they rock maybe my phone.
  • Isolation: Unsure, usually I use closed headphones. But I hear the ATH-700xs are great for CS:GO and are open. Wouldn’t mind trying open ear.
  • Public: Probably not.
  • Size: Full sized over ear headset.
  • Tonal Balance: I like my bass in music, but these headphones are for CS:GO almost exclusively, was seeing good things about the ATH-700xs being light on the bass and it helping not drown out footsteps. I’d prefer more bass for my music but CS is the priority.
  • Previous Headphones: For gaming I have had SteelSeries Siberia v2, didn’t like the sound quality. Comfort was good. HyperX Cloud 1s sound quality quite a bit better, comfort about the same. Currently using the clouds. I have had Beats in the past, they were alright, on par with my $100 pair of Klipsch headphones. I quite enjoyed the Klipsch over ears, not sure what type specifically.
  • Music Taste: Almost exclusively hiphop, with some 80s rock and a little folk/pop mixed in.
  • What I want to improve: I want a better headset for CS:GO. My Cloud 1s were pretty solid but the quality has deteriorated over time.

My three main considerations now are: ATH AD700x, Sennheiser GAME ONE, Sennheiser PC363D. Although I do not have USB 3 will that matter at all? I do not need 7.1 sound. The AKG K612 Pro seems around my price range and is reviewed quite well. It seems like the ATH-AD700xs are the headphones to go for as they are about half the price as the rest of the options I suggested. Is it worth spending the extra money on any of those headsets? Also do I need to consider an AMP of any sort for these headphones? I was recommended something such as the FiiO E10k earlier. Not sure if I need an amp or not, I would be willing to purchase one if it allows for me to unlock the full potential of my headset. But not just to spend money on another toy and eek out another 1% or 2% of performance.

Thanks a ton for reading! Any insight is more than welcome.

> I really want to get a headset for the Xbox One that supports surround sound.

This is my scolding. Surround sound can only be surround when it is set up to be surround. Multiple speakers one inch away from your ear is not a surround setup and will not create surround, audio-postprocessing softwares does it – by changing the sound patterns from different directions, to simulate it.

Surround headsets seem to go for $160+ on Amazon. With that budget you can get something wayyy better.

Adapter: XBox Stereo Adapter ($25)

Microphone: Antlion Modmic ($50)

Headphones:

  • Audio Technica AD700x ($98) On sale now, I’m buying them right the fuck now myself.

Or

  • Philips SHP9500 ($76) Said to be in the same caliber as Sennheiser HD600 ($400)

Cable connector: 3.5mm Y-Splitter/Headphone-Mic adapter. ($2?)

A total of $175 for a setup that blows. Every. Single. Gaming marketed headset out of the water.

The audio driver is 32.5% larger than those of an Astro A50s. The headphones have zero audio insulation. Isn’t that bad? For those sitting next to you perhaps, but it’ll allow sound from the speakers to flow freely without creating pressure, making it feel like you’re in a big room listening to sounds coming from all places. Surround..? Not really, but a phenomena called soundstage, making it easier to pinpoint where audio is coming from, because it feels like the audio sources are far away, combined with surround-post-processing it’s far better than even true 7.1 Surround Headsets.

USB headsets will not use your sound card, they do their own processing.

Are you looking for a headset with a mic, or just a pair of good headphones?

Well that’s a gaming headset and super cheap at that. Here’s my combination of headphones and attachable mic.

This is about options though and is technically cheaper. You can use any headphones where you’d be able to stick the mics magnet attachment on the side. Someone also mentioned the V-MODA which is a cheaper attachable mic. A much more fault tolerant setup as well. I don’t have to worry about breaking cheaply made plastic and throwing down full price to replace it.

For $150 (depending on the stereo adapter) you can get a Audio Technica Ath-AD700x (Long name, I know), A Modmic, and a Microsoft stereo adapter (http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-One-Stereo-Headset-Adapter/dp/B00IAVDOS6) (I don’t know whether you have this or not)

I have this setup (Plus an Astro Mixamp for realistic surround sound, but that’s another $130). The headset is super high quality, and has such a good sound stage (how far away it can make things sound) that it’s almost surround sound. The Modmic is so you can have a microphone for gaming (You might want a headphone and mic connector Like This if you don’t already)

Okay. Start watching reddit/voat for when the big Amazon sale happens. It’s rumored to start sometime this month. With this type of budget, you’ll definitely want to get the most bang for your buck since it’s kind of tight in the headphone world.

First off, read up on different types of headphones. Specifically open vs closed so you’ll know which type is best suited for you.

Secondly, you can find similar threads on this topic with a quick google search like here. Read up on a couple, if you can, to get some more info to help make your decision.

Lastly, the easiest recommendation I can make (if you can find it on sale) would be a pair of Beyerdynamics or Sennheisers. If you need to keep the budget outside of sales, these Audio Technica’s with a Zalman will do you perfectly. Like I said though, /r/headphones will definitely help you out if you make a post. It’s an amazing sub with a lot of great opinions and knowledge. I hope this helps!

Is this current price a good price for them? (140 dollars)

http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-AD700X-Audiophile-Headphones/dp/B009S332TQ/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1420005082&sr=8-13&keywords=audio+technica

How much worse are the AD 500x’s? They are quite a bit cheaper and I’d like to save some money if the upgrade isn’t worth double the price.

I see these ones on ebay. Would you consider them a safe buy? http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Audio-technica-ATH-AD700X-Audiophile-Dynamic-Open-Air-Model-Headphones-F-S-/181629786949?pt=US_Headphones&hash=item2a49fa9b45

Budget – Less than 150 dollars and really cheaper if possible. I dont have a ton of money and anything should be an upgrade from 12 dollar ear buds.

Source – Either my computer or my galaxy s5. Nothing to fancy. Almost always my computer though.

Requirements for Isolation – None really. I’ll be wearing them pretty much only in my room.

Past headphones – Like I said, I have a 12 dollar pair of earbuds.

Preferred Music – I want my headphones to make pink floyd sound great. Basically tailored around their sound. Not a huge fan of bass.

edit: I also do a fair amount of gaming so I would like a nice sound stage.

AD700X or 900X solely for gaming due to their very open soundstage and good positional audio

HD598s for general everyday usage usage as the 700x/900x have a low amount of bass which is fine in games but most people want more for music etc

Reasonably priced could mean different things to me and you but AT AD700s are always recommended from people in the know although I don’t find the “winged” headband design to be super comfortable. And I can personally say that HD558s are great.

If competitive gaming is your main focus and music is secondary go with AD700X and a modmic or desktop mic. If a competitive edge is not the only goal and you want an all around headphone get the Tecsun Grassroots wood headphones. But they must be pad rolled with the brainwavz round velour pads. The combo is sublime! They are now my go to headphones for music, gaming and movies. I have not been content with any of my headphones for movies until I tried the Tecsuns.

Don’t buy astros they are over rated and you need the mix amp.

These are probably the best head phones for siege. These amplify the treble more the bass and that’s when you start hearing the foot steps a lot better.

I deleted my comment because it came off as pretty dickish. I can tell the difference between above me and below me perfectly fine with my DT990s and audio settings set to Hi-Fi. I don’t know what else to tell you other than suggesting different headphones, because they make a big difference. I’d suggest AD700x, AKG K701, or AKG K702 if you want the best sound localization you can get.

With that said, there is still room for improvement within R6’s sound engine.

I’ve had the G930s and they’re terrible. I’m guessing that since you’re looking at the G930s, you are into gaming. Take a look at the Audio Technica ATH-AD700Xs and add a ModMic…
http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-AD700X-Audiophile-Headphones/dp/B009S332TQ/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1443980223&sr=8-9&keywords=ath-

They’re open so the isolation wouldn’t be great. But for $150 I cannot think of a gaming headset that could touch it.

http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-AD700X-Audiophile-Headphones/dp/B009S332TQ Just save up a little bit, it’s literally the best thing in your price range.

alternatively, you could buy open-back headphones and have ridiculous sound stage.

http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-AD700X-Audiophile-Headphones/dp/B009S332TQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1417596503&sr=8-1&keywords=audio+technica+ad700

There are exceptions… overpriced headsets that do exactly what EXTREMELY cheap headphones do, except less effectively.

If you want to go the headphone route, Audio Technicas and Astro’s Mixamp Pro.

No, don’t buy headsets, they’re cheap mics attached to cheap headphones which have awful soundstage.

Pick up the ad700x which have some of the best soundstage in their price range and then get a modmic to attach to it.
