It’s not so much about “carrying” and SSD but about having all important files within the computer itself, doing time machine, etc. If the extra files are not that important then an external SSD would be fine. Ok, so I have been having issues with the charging, and headphone jack, hdmi for when I need to mirror to a tv screen for some meetings I have had to run, has a thumb drive port and ACTUALLY FITS in my bag (not the same size as a fishing tackle box, lol).

To be fair it is a little expensive ($80-100 depending on the deal of the day), but it has all those ports AND built-in SSD memory, AND AND is about the same size as a “magic mouse 2” or the “microsoft arc mouse” (for reference), while having the connection cord with a builtin storage slot, all on top of allowing up to 100watt fast charging through the power port!

Might be a little more “umph” than you are looking for, but if you forsee a need for these various aspects: look into it at least.
