Don’t give up. I’ve totally been in that spot, it’s soo tiring and frustrating and when you’re in it it’s really hard to believe, let alone see any light at the end of the tunnel to that next rung up the ladder. But you can do it. I believe in you.

I think one of the most important things I always tried to do for myself along the way that helped me better cope with all that stress was putting extra effort into making whatever space I was living in at that moment as nice as I could using whatever I had. When you’re broke you spend a LOT of time in your room or at least I did. Work-home-work-home. And it can get depressing af, especially if the room your coming home to every day just further amplifies that feeling. I used to love looking through fancy home magazines imagining my dream rooms to the point that finding super cheap and/or free ways to brighten up my room, or whatever space I was living in at the time basically became my hobby and I found it had a surprisingly significant, positive impact on my psyche.

But just don’t give up or stop dreaming about all the big amazing things you want for yourself. Deciding you want something is the first step you have to take to get something. You’re worthy of good things. It won’t always be like this.

And if you want to give my coping mechanism a try here are a few practical hacks/highest impact > lowest cost recommendations I’ve discovered along the way you might find helpful:

  1. All White, Basic Bed Sheets — I’ve found nothing that can instantly brighten a room more for so little money than a basic set of all white sheets and pillowcases. A lot of people shy away from them because they think they’re too high maintenance, but they’re actually way easier to take care of than other colors because you can just bleach the shit out of them and boom they look brand new again. Also they’re inexpensive and almost always on sale. I personal recommend these AmazonBasic Fiber Sheet Set ($15-$17/Full): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0154ASDSQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_QMWbDb393Y594

  2. Fake or Real Plant — you can find good options for either under $5-7 and it instantly brightens things.

  3. These $3.99 cut and fit blinds from IKEA – they look shocking awesome. We just put them up in a different room.

  4. Craigslist free/curbside listening — you would be shocked at what you can find here.

  5. $1.00 Roll of Black Electric Tape – sounds odd at first, but I’ve used a pair of scissors, a measuring tape and a roll of this stuff to totally transform my walls multiple times, here’s one example (the whole wall literally cost me 90 cents):

  6. The Dollar Store – so many amazing finds to be had here (obviously): https://www.dollartree.com/floral-home-decor/picture-frames

  7. Extra Pillows — whenever you can afford to buy an extra pillow or two for your bed, or sofa, chair whatever. They’re always a low cost high impact addition to any room.
