I think the AKG K702 might be a very good fit for you. It is an open headphone with a large sound stage. It has some treble emphasis. And the bass rolls off below 100hz. No boosted subbass like K371.

For FPS gaming I use the AKG K702 because in Italy these headphones are very cheap on amazon and they have a great soundstage and accurate imaging (bass frequencies are quite recessed). I feel I can recommend these headphones and, if I lived in USA, I probably would have taken the AKG K7XX.

As a mic, I suggest you a not very expensive lavalier microphone or desktop microphone.

You in the UK seem to get good prices on AKG headphones, so look at the AKG K702.

The Beyerdynamic DT 990 also seems to be in your price range.

Don’t know the quality of your current audio equipment, so you might need an amp with these.

For no amp, which would you recommend to be the best?

Edit: Looking at these and they seem to have raving reviews. What would be a high quality mixamp? I hadn’t really considered this.

Hello everybody, since my pair of headset broke and i have enough of cheap headset, i want to buy a nice headset (and a microphone but i already which one i’ll buy (a ModMic v4.0)). Here’s my criterias :

  • Budget – from 0 to about 170€ (MAX)
  • Source – a regular PC, a phone…
  • Requirements for Isolation – I’ll be using it at home (since there is no door on my room, you can imagine that i need a bit of isolation), at my friend’s home, at my grandma’s home, on the train
  • Preferred Type of Headphone – IEM ? regular ones, a full size then i guess
  • Preferred tonal balance – An overall balanced pair of headphones
  • Past headphones – a bad Triton headset for an xbox (ear were pressed and hurt after a while), a steelseries siberia 100 (they broke), I used a Technics RP-F600 (this one was good but maybe too cheap, over-ear design was design I appreciated it)
  • Preferred Music – I listen to a lot of things, i like metal as i like rap, i like classic (Stravinsky), i like mathematic metal (Meshuggah), i like rap (Alkpote, Columbine), i like prog rock (Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Yes), i like rock (Steven Wilson, The Beatles, Rush, Van Halen), i like electro music (Mr.Oizo, Daft Punk), punk (Bérurier Noir), prog metal (Tool, Porcupine Tree, Opeth), etc etc etc.

What would you like to improve on from your set-up – Just a nice headset, with a nice balance, the nicest reproduction of what i listen to (i listen to .flac, no mp3 64kbp) if it’s games, i want to have the best reproduction for the price.

Location – I live in France

I hope you can help me choose a headset, i have found one, but i’m not sure about the open-design, the headset i might buy is the AKG K-702 (not the K-701 since i heard that the bass are too light on the 701).

Thank you for help me !

How are the AKG K702? They seem to be going for pretty cheap right now and I’m wondering if they would be a good entry level headphones. The main use for me would be gaming and listening to rock and electronic music.

I’m looking for some good headphones which can be used for music producing and screwing around in FL Studios. Maybe some DJ-ing.
I mainly listen to electronic music. I’d like if there could be no to little sound leaking. Or maybe there could? I wouldn’t really mind some, but not too much.

My budget is 200-300 $ and I’m trying to find some good deal this Black Friday, but there’s just so many and any would be an upgrade for me (really, I only used pretty shitty headphones before).

The deal on Sennheiser 598 C is very tempting, but I’m also considering HD 650, Beyerdynamic 990 PRO, Audio-Technica ATH-M50x or even these AKGs. Seems like a good price.

I’ve also been recommended Sennheiser 25 HD II and I’m really lost between all these stuff. Would HD 8 also be worth a check?
I’d like it balanced, but to pull on the side of electronic music.

Im located in Europe so I mainly check amazon.de, it and uk for deals.

Budget – 100GBP +- 30 GBP

Source – Laptop and Nexus 5X

Requirements for Isolation – Some would be nice but not too necessary.

Will you be using these Headphones in Public? Yes, running and just walking to uni, I want to listen to my Spotify playlist on my phone.

Preferred Type of Headphone – I don’t know how it’s called but something like this

Preferred tonal balance – I am fine with balanced type.

Past headphones – Earphones from company called MediaDevil

Preferred Music – Classical, rock, trance etc.

What would you like to improve on from your set-up – The build – I have problems with those flimsy cables and audio connector itself, they seem flimsy and can easily bend in my pocket. That’s how old earphones got destroyed even with me trying to not put phone in a position that bends the connector.

Thanks for the detailed response. I looked on massdrop and they have the k702 with red. I’m not much of a red person, plus my setup is black, white, and blue.

How often do they drop on massdrop? Why not get the ones on amazon that are $191? Is there a difference in comfort due to it being tumbled leather?

You sold me on the 800s, next big purchase if the 1080ti hybrid doesn’t come out.

The K702 I received was a Chinese one from Amazon and was identical to the one pictured there. The headband was basically a rock hard piece of flat leather that pushed pretty hard into the top of my head when worn. I tried to wrap things around it but there was quite literally no room and it just increased the squeeze at the top as well as moving the cups up and into the bottom of my earlobes. In order to get a comfortable fit around my ears I did have to move the cups slightly down, which is probably what caused the headband to push in so hard and cause soreness, so I guess my head may even be too big for the K702!

I wouldn’t recommend the K7XX for europeans, especially now that the K702 goes for this price: http://www.amazon.co.uk/AKG-K702-Open-Back-Reference-Headphones/dp/B001RCD2DW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1455464538&sr=8-1&keywords=k702
The sound differences in terms of FR between the K702 and the K7XX are small, after all. Spaciousness and instruments’ separation are basically identical.

When you mention bump, is it the metal snap that attaches to the individual ear can as seen in these pictures?

Other than that, I’m not too worried about how punishing they can be. Seems like a rather good thing since you can factor out the headphones from hearing poor audio!

Thinking of buying AKG K702. I already have the HE-500 but cable is broken and I am impatient. Plus I’ve always wanted new headphones. Is the K702 a huge downgrade, about the same, or better than HE-500 in terms of sound quality? I have a Asgard 2 and Uber Bifrost for DAC and AMP btw. Also is $279 decent deal for the K702? I can get it tomorrow

This is far from an exhaustive list. If you have a desktop mic that you’re happy with, your options for headphones are pretty much wide open.

Whatever you choose, try to opt for something with an easily replaceable cable and earpads.

Hi everyone,

Have never spent any real money on headphone, with my current pair dying, I am looking to make a small investment.

Just saw that massdrop has the AKG K7XX up for $200 again and was wondering how solid a deal that is (I highly prefer over-ear).

A few minutes after I saw those, I noticed that amazon has the AKG Pro Audio K702 on sale for $233.

Would either of these be a good buy? How do the two compare? Are there others that you would suggest instead?

Lastly, can anyone point me in the direction of an idiots guide to amps for headphones.

Open back:

AKG K712 – I used to both listen to music and game with these, and they are a good value
Beyerdynamic DT 880 – I use this one for all genres, though it might be too analytical for you

Beyerdynamic Custon One Pro – They have a rather bass heavy sound signature, but the highs are clear and can be useful(depending on the game you play.

Since I went through the same mess recently:

AKG K702 is €110 on amazon.de right now, incredible price for what it is. AKG’s website lists it at $349 but that seems unrealistic, but I couldn’t find it on amazon.com so whatever. It’s really a good starting point in my opinion since it’s so unopinionated. It’s also astonishingly comfortable, it’s super lightweight so you barely feel the headband. In comparison the Fidelio X2 is like a brick on my head. For the genres you listed, in my experience so far, metal can be meh (depends really, right now I have Baying of the Hounds playing and it’s alright), jazz is very enjoyable (but “jazz”?? depends even more)… if I’m understanding what you mean by “acoustic chill” correctly that’s totally fine. EDM I don’t really listen to, but I do listen to techno/tech house/deep house and it’s an interesting experience. It doesn’t move your head like the music sometimes aims to do, but you can actually listen to everything that’s going on, so that’s nice to have if you’re interested. It’s excellent with trance since there’s so much going on all the time and now you can follow it all.

That leaves you enough room to get a JDS Atom for €170 [1] and then €97 for a DAC… I’m quite happy with my FX Audio DAC-X6; but if you already wrote off that budget, Topping D30 is way superior in the audiosciencereview measurements. Then again the consensus seems to be that the difference would not be audible — I haven’t used another DAC myself so I don’t have an opinion on this. And don’t rely on X6’s amp (since you already have the budget), the reduction in background noise was very obvious going from X6 alone to X6+Atom.

[1]: yes it’s twice the price in EU compared to US unfortunately. No it’s not an amazon reseller ripoff, shipping + tax already comes close and then you don’t have to deal with customs etc.

Anyway you right though. I really do appreciate the advice given. I’m going to check out some reviews for some and pick em out, but just based on design alone I’m liking the 702’s. I understand and once again I really appreciate it. When looking at the Beyerdynamics, they have quite a few versions like pro and premium. Hmn wonder what’s the difference between them are.

I’d debate how effective gaming chairs are vs their counterparts (such as this one with a breathable back and proper lumbar adjustments among other features) but that’s for another time.

Gaming headphones are overly priced. They are made for a niche market that assumes there are some sort of special factors going into these headphones for them vs “normal” people. This usually just means it’s USB connected, comes accompanied with useless software, and has some form of lame surround sound.

For example, mostly everything on this list is overshadowed by the main players in the mid range headphone market: AKG, Sennheiser and BeyerDynamic.

Hope that helps.

Budget – <$220

Source – Desktop PC

Requirements for Isolation – None

Preferred Type of Headphone – Over-Ear

Preferred tonal balance – Not sure

Past headphones -Sony Mdr-xb950/b Extra Bass Headphone. Nice and comfortable, good bass.

Preferred Music – I watch a lot of movies and play a lot of video games. I listen to EDM/Rock/Big Band/Orchestral/pretty much all types. I cant pick a genre that I listen to the most

What would you like to improve on from your set-up – Not sure

I want a good pair of headphones where I can close my eyes and listen to nice orchestral pieces or big band pieces and be taken away, hearing all the individual instruments. But I also want it to have some kick when I listen to edm and play video games. I’ve done some research for my price range and i’ve looked at these two pairs of phones: AKG k 702 and HIFIMAN HE-400I

I’m having trouble because I feel like both of these headphones excel in different areas but I don’t know which one i’d prefer.

Here are some examples of music: Haywyre, Dave Brubek, Orchestral, ODESZA

From what you described yeah I’d say the AD700X would be excellent for the budget, clearly better than 558.

BTW if you can order from Amazon UK check out this K702 and this K701 (same headphones, the 702 has removable cable). Those are excellent deals. Keep an eye on both, the price fluctuates, but it’s currently at a historical low point. They need an amp to achieve another 10-15% quality, but you can use them without it for the time being. They’re about 2 levels above 558 and AD700X.

Another very good choice is K612 Pro.

A Game One only has impedance of 50 Ohm so you’d probably get away with just plugging it into your soundcard. You might get better results from an external amp/dac though.

With £200 though you could get a decent pair of headphones (I like the AKG K702s or the DT 990s. A ModMic 5 is around £60. Personally that’s what I’d do, the quality will be noticeably higher than even the Sennheiser Game headsets.

I’ve been looking at quite a few things while I was away from my computer.

I’m leaning towards a Modi 2 Uber (toslink for my PS4 audio) combined with a Magni 2.

My main concern is shitty drivers – I want to bypass any Creative/Asus drivers where possible. The Schiit drivers are relatively simple and well-maintained hopefully.

Secondly it appears that I may start using headphones more, however I will still want speakers as an option as well.

So I’m turned on by the Schiit stack idea, however I have some questions.

1) The Magni 2 Uber comes with ‘pre-amp outputs’ whatever they are. Does this allow me to link the Magni to speakers? I would almost certainly be buying pretty decent self-powered ones. I saw the JBL LSR305s being recommended in another thread. Do I need another unit to link the Magni to powered speakers? Or can I just hook them up? If so, does the Magni possess some kind of switching to allow me to switch between headphones and speakers?

2) Gaming on the Modi/Magni stack doesn’t have any surround sound that would be created by a comparable sound card (Sound Blaster ZX for example), so does this make it a lot worse for gaming? I’m not a Counter-Strike professional or anything so I’m not terribly concerned about lack of surround audio, but I do want a good aural experience in FPS games like the recent Prey for example. I just don’t particularly want a ‘gaming-only’ setup, and as I’ve explained before I detest the driver issues that come with Creative/Asus sound cards.

3) What headphones? I was looking at the AKG K702 and the AKG K712 Pro they look pretty good and Mad Lust Envy rated them quite well but I wonder if it’s not worth spending a bit more cash to get Sennheisers… he rates them better than Sennheisers if anything though? The HD 650 is about 150 dollars more than the K12 Pro sooo….

After 6 years, my SHURE SRH440’s died. I’m looking for a new pair that will last me another 5+ years. I wear these 8-14 hours a day, working from home, doing the following:

  • Music (anything and everything, 50’s doo wop to EDM to punk)
  • Podcasts
  • Meetings

Priorities:

  • Comfort
  • Sound
  • Quality
  • Removable cable

I’ve been very happy with the SRH440’s, I’m not an audiophile but I have certainly seen a huge drop in quality since I’ve had to change to cheap headphones.

Money isn’t a huge issue, I’m looking for anything sub $500 if it’s worth the cost.

The AKG K702 seem to fit the bill, are these worth the $100 difference vs a new pair of SRH440s, anything else I should consider?

You’re saying this wrong with this game and if using surround headphones with a DAC Amp, the audio should actually be Headphones—Surround?

So I’d like some advice on choosing a DAC/Amp. I just ordered a pair of AKG K702’s and they’re arriving next week. I’m pretty stoked, as this is my first serious headphone purchase. Up til now I’ve just been using Beats. Anyway, I’m wondering if the FiiO E10K USB DAC/Amp is suitable for these headphones. If not, I’d appreciate any recommendations for a good DAC/Amp. I’d like to buy a combined DAC/Amp so that I don’t have to deal with two standalone units, and I’d like to spend less than $150, absolutely no more than $200. Portability isn’t a concern; I’ll be listening primarily in my bedroom.

Also, I’ll be hooking the unit up to my MacBook. Do I have to install anything on my computer to make it work, or can I just plug it in and start listening?

Thanks!

I mean… I can’t say I would really recommend turtle beach headphones for listening to music. I guess my idea of decent headphones/speakers differs a bit. I personally use AKG 702’s, which I would consider to be pretty good quality cans, but they are by no means the top of the line. There are definitely a lot of headphones that you can buy for much cheaper that are better for music though!

Honestly, I understand if you aren’t as big into music as I am (most people aren’t), and I know a lot of people don’t really know or care about the quality of their music. I certainly can tell a big difference when I hear low quality mp3’s, but then I pay very close attention to detail with music.

Hi everyone,

Accidentally posted in the general thread, oops. I have never spent any real money on headphone, with my current pair dying, I am looking to make a small investment.

Budget: £100 – 170 ($150-250)

Source: MSI z170a gaming m7, iPhone

Preferred Tonal Balance: Warm and slightly bass boosted

Preferred Music: A wide variety but recently;

Isolation: Will primarily use at home but might take into office where isolations is more important but not crucial.

Past: Terrible pair of Hyper X cloud 2’s

Note Will be used for gaming/mumble/skype so a mod mic suggestion would be nice too

Headphones I have checked out: Audio Technica M50x, AKG K702

Thanks!

EDIT: Links and spelling

Ok I made my decision and I’ll get the AKG k702 Pro. I am impatient so I’ll just pay $279+tax for them which will come to my house tomorrow

Q702 and a ModMic if you got the cash. Otherwise I’ suggest the 598 and if you are on a budget these Audio Technica or Superlux.

Splurge, go crazy, and go AKG. Those are open headphones.

Closed headphones to splurge on: these. Sorry I pointed you to two different sites.

Oh wait, these are prettier. Sorry, I don’t know much about headphones but I’ve been drooling over these for the last two years. I wish I had the dough to spend on these.
