The one thing I can pinpoint that has helped me lose weight and keep it off has been using a smart scale. It records multiple metrics such as weight, subcutaneous fat, water intake, muscle mass, etc and provides charts of how i’m progressing over time as well as what range the number falls into for context. I use it each morning before I drink anything to get an accurate measurement. I don’t focus as much on the weight number but on the fat numbers and it’s been so fascinating to see how it fluctuates based on what I ate the night before or what lifestyle choices I made. As a result, its forced me to be more conscious of my decisions and helped me identify foods that have a negative effect on me. I definitely still indulge but seeing the actual data has been the missing piece!

It might be easier for him to download myfitnesspal or fitbit and use a Bluetooth scale that is compatible with those apps and updates weight automatically. You can connect with him on those apps and he can give you permissions to see his weight.

I use this one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BJY6GTJ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_q4d6Fb01F3Q6V?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Its compatible with fitbit and you can be “friends” on fitbit app and see his stats (he has to change them from private to public or friends only)

I have this one and love it. It connects automatically to my fitbit which is neat. It has a whole bunch of neat stats like water and muscle weight that are probably not 100% accurate so don’t use them religiously, but it’s for sure fun to see. The scale looks nice in my bathroom too and was relatively inexpensive.

Look at buying this scale. It works well, and helps you track other items besides just the weight. For instance, it will track your water %, and if you have a “bad day” and you are 1lb heavier, it might be due to water weight.

Congratulations on your decision to start IF!

Although, I’m more than twice your age (46), we have similar starting heights, builds, weights, and goals. I’m also a dad… our daughter turns 3 next month. I also put on some “baby weight” with my wife’s pregnancy and since the baby arrived, 15 lbs. in the nearly 3.75 years.

I started IF ~6 weeks ago doing 16:8. Since then I have gone from ~209 lbs. to 197 lbs. My clothes are fitting better, I have more energy than ever, and I feel great. My schedule now, varies from 16:8, 18:6, 20:4 depending upon my social calendar and family meals.

Those first few (4) weeks of 16:8 were super hard for me… I was super addicted to late night snacking and eating whenever/whatever I wanted. But, I stuck with it and now it’s easy and rewarding.

Things that helped me…

  • Staying busy/active during fasting to help not thinking about food
  • Drinking lots of coffee, tea, water, zero calorie seltzer.
  • A pinch of salt (lite salt or otherwise) as needed to negate any lightheaded/shakiness.
  • Embracing the hungry – Understanding that it is okay to be hungry, you will survive. In fact, your counting calories, so you know you won’t starve. I now welcome the hungry feelings I get (yes I still get hungry) because I know it is my body switching from burning carbs to fat… If you’re hungry, it’s working!
  • Also, I’d recommend a smart scale to track/graph your progress…. weight, bodyfat, etc. I just started this last week and wish I had done it sooner. There are some really good/inexpensive (~$30) ones on Amazon right now that connect to your smartphone or tablet. I use the following, but there are others: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07BJY6GTJ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Anyway, good luck on your journey. It may be hard at first, but it is totally worth the effort.

Cheers!

I wish I had gotten my scale sooner… for the whole IF journey.

The data is from the Feelfit app (ios) that came with my Abyon scale… link to scale: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07BJY6GTJ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

There are a lot of sub $30 scales on Amazon right now.

Here is a better rated model that I have seen recommend on this sub.

Link to Renpho scale:

https://www.amazon.com/RENPHO-Bluetooth-Body-Fat-Scale/dp/B01N1UX8RW/ref=sr_1_3?crid=3SZXYAHOZ5XGC&keywords=renpho+bluetooth+smart+scale&qid=1552506618&s=hpc&sprefix=ren%2Chpc%2C128&sr=1-3

Disclaimer… I’m not sure if I would trust the measurements coming from these scales implicitly, but as a point of reference the information is good to have.

I love having the data at hand for future reference, sharing and motivation.

Cheers!

Try an Abyon scale.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BJY6GTJ/ref=cm_sw_r_em_apa_fab_RP5HFbFT6N43M
It’s accurate and tells you a bunch of information like your BMI, Body Fat %, Bone Mass, Muscle Mass, etc;

This is the scale you want

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BJY6GTJ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_pmQ3CbFTM5KX3

I have one of these and it works great. My trainer has an $11,000 version that it closely matches. His does a lot more, but for this price it’ll tell you fat content.
